The GreatLeap is directed by Zi Alikhan, ART’s artisticdirecting fellow, and the productionmarks his Portland directorial debut.REVISED DATES:The Great Leap begins preview performanceson January 19, opens on January21, and runs through February 13, on TheArmory’s U.S. Bank Main Stage. Due toproduction delays, the preview performancesoriginally slated for January 15and 16 have been canceled. This also impactsthe dates for the Pay What You Willperformances, which are now scheduledfor January 22 and February 10.“We’re thrilled to partner with Artists Repto launch this fantastic, boisterous play.It has been a joy to collaborate with ARTand support the deeply creative work ofdirector Zi Alikhan. The Great Leap examines facets ofthe U.S./Chinese relationship and how ourpresumptions and lack of understandingdistort and poison it. At a time of risinganti-Asian violence, this conversationabout missteps of the past feels especiallyvital if we are to collectively find a betterway forward,” ART Interim Artistic DirectorLuan Schooler said.The Great Leap brings together basketball,politics, and history to explore personalidentity, cultural ties, and relationsbetween the U.S. and China. The play isloosely inspired by the real-life adventuresof Yee’s father, whose basketball heroicsled him to visit China in the 1980s.
