Head Coach
Mark Bonner
Firstly, I’d like to welcome Nathan Jones, his staff and players to
The Abbey for today’s Emirates FA Cup tie against Luton Town.
The FA Cup has lost its magic. That’s what some
will have you believe.
Of course many of us remember fondly sitting down
on Cup Final day to watch the all-day television
coverage. In the days before wall-to-wall football on
our TVs, it was the very first fly on the wall type day,
with reporters and cameras following the teams all day.
Of course as things have changed, the competition
doesn’t carry the same interest of the Premier League
and Champions League around the world and even
among the fan bases of top clubs in England. In truth,
the attendances at games appear lower in the early
rounds of many team’s fixtures. I am sure that the
sheer volume of games on TV and the digital age has
changed the way we all view games and in particular
the FA Cup, but for any club, big or small, professional
or part-time, locally, nationally, or internationally
popular; the cup still hooks everyone at some stage.
For teams like ourselves, the cup is about the memories
and the money. Every ounce of income can make
significant contributions to the health, wealth and future
ambitions of a club. But the priceless moments are
those experienced by supporters, players and staff. In
fact, anyone associated with us. It’s the Quarter Finals
in the 90’s with John Beck, It’s Manchester United with
Richard Money. It’s St James’ Park. Those occasions live
forever in the memory of everyone.
Today, we face a strong Luton Town team who are
going great guns in the Championship. The progress of
the club in recent seasons has been outstanding. They
have made incredible developments on and off the
pitch and set the path in many ways for us to learn from.
We understand the difficulty of the fixture and will be
stretched and tested to be competitive. The underdog
tag is tattooed all over us this year. We know that. But
it’s the FA Cup. So who knows? You have to dream.
Nathan Jones is a leader and coach who I have huge
respect for. He has performed brilliantly at Luton.
Chris Cohen is on The UEFA Pro Licence currently
that I am also completing. Kevin Pilkington is also
on the staff - someone we know well having worked
together for a few seasons recently and who made an
excellent contribution to the staff.
Luke Berry returns; a Cambridge boy who helped
keep us in the Conference and then get promoted
from it, not all too long ago. This was in an era where
the two teams competed what seemed like every
month across all competitions. Both have come a
long way since. I look forward to seeing everyone
and welcoming them to a packed, excited and lively
Abbey Stadium under the floodlights and on the tele.
The excitement of the cup is travelling around
the country to stadiums and clubs that aren’t on the
usual schedule.
The joy of the cup is celebrating on the pitch with
5000 travelling fans 45 minutes after the game.
The wonder of the cup is dreaming of the
impossible and unexpected.
The thrill of the cup is the last ditch tackle or
save, and the jubilation of scoring in front of the
national media.
The challenge of the cup is today. Trying to
compete against teams from higher levels and thrive
on top occasions.
The magic of the FA Cup IS alive. Be in no doubt
about that.
Chief Executive Officer
ian mather
Welcome to all supporters from Luton. This fixture has some history
and the last game was at the Abbey nearly four years ago.
Since then both teams have achieved
promotion. Luton are doing very well in
the Championship and the U’s are sitting
in the middle of League 1. A far cry from
days when both teams were outside of the
Football League.
The U’s have had three consecutive away
games with the last two in the league at
Fleetwood and Bolton. At first sight they
seem like these teams are poles apart. Bolton
play in a fantastic stadium which is at Premier
League level with a snooker table surface.
Fleetwood’s Highbury is not so grand and,
as they themselves acknowledged, the pitch
was in need of a fair amount of work. What
they have in common though is far greater
than what divides them. Both teams played
with passion which was matched by equally
passionate supporters. I know that is the same
for the U’s and for Luton. This is what we love
about the game.
The atmosphere fans bring to a game is all
part of the joy of football and it was great to
see our U18’s experience excellent support of
nearly 1,000 fans when they outplayed (bold
but true) their Premier League counterparts
from Leeds United in their recent FA Youth
cup game at the Abbey. The score of 2-0
could have been a lot more emphatic given
our domination of the game. No doubt our
lads had put in the hard work on the training
ground but I am sure they responded well to
a crowd which was much larger than they (and
Leeds) expected.
The 5th round is at the Abbey and we play
Nottingham Forest on Wednesday 9 February.
Tickets are priced at £3 per adult with kids at
£1. Kick off at 7.00PM. Do come along and
let’s see if we can smash the 1,000 crowd
number. The skill on offer from our team
is well worth the time and money and the
players will really appreciate the support.
The fun does not stop there. Our Women take
on Norwich City at the Abbey on Sunday 27
February. Usually they play at St Neots so this
is an opportunity to see them play on your
doorstep. Kick-off is at 2.00PM and prices are
also at £3 and £1.
Common to all games of football – men’s,
women’s, youth and even the park variety
is that it should be fun. Every fan watching
the game today will go through waves of
emotion. That’s all part of the game but, win
or lose, penalty or ridiculous let off, don’t let
passion stray into abuse. We and other clubs
have experienced the odd incident of banter
becoming foul with the odd object thrown on
the pitch.
Keep it fun for all. Enjoy the game.
Today’s Opposition
luton town
FOUNDED: 1885 | NICKNAME: THE HATTERS | STADIUM: KENILWORTH ROAD | LAST SEASON: 12TH
The Hatters have again
defied odds this season in
the Championship, with
Nathan Jones’ men sitting
just six points shy of the
play-offs despite having
been the bookies third
favourites to be relegated
before the start of the
campaign.
With potentially one eye locked
onto a remarkable promotion
push in the final third of the
season, attentions turn to the
FA Cup this afternoon, with
the Hatters faithful making the
84-mile round trip to the Abbey
Stadium looking to secure
progression to the fifth round for
the first time since 2013.
That Hatter’s famous 2012/13 FA
Cup run saw Paul Buckle’s side
knock out Premier League side
Norwich City at Carrow Road in
the fourth round before eventually
being bettered in the round of
16 at home to Millwall – a game
in which proved to be Buckle’s
penultimate game in charge
before being dismissed following
a 1-1 draw with Mansfield three
days later.
A relatively quiet January transfer
window sparked into life on
deadline day for Luton after it
was confirmed that Croatian
international ‘keeper Simon Sluga
had left Kenilworth Road to join
Bulgarian champions Ludogorets
1945 Razgrad for an undisclosed
fee, having made 19 appearances
for the Hatters this season
between the sticks. Despite
James Shea cementing his place
as Luton’s no. one since early
December, former U’s loanee Jed
Steer was drafted into the squad
in the final few hours of deadline
day, joining on a temporary
basis from Aston Villa, and the
stopper could make his Hatters
debut against his former club this
afternoon.
Five wins in their last eight outings
in all competition throughout
December and January, prior to
the Hatters clash with Swansea
City on Tuesday night, had seen
Nathan Jones’ side rise from 14th
to 10th in the Championship,
sitting just six points away from
sixth placed Middlesbrough as
well as in the hat for the FA Cup
fifth round thanks to a routine 4-0
victory over Harrogate Town in the
third round.
Kal Naismith, who signalled a year
at Kenilworth Road with a dramatic
late goal and assist against title
contenders AFC Bournemouth
mid-way through last month,
has been key to Luton’s rise this
season in the Championship,
having played predominantly
on the left of the back three like
Nathan Jones’ prefers to deploy.
The former Wigan man has
contributed to one goal and four
assists in 26 starts this season in
the Championship.
James Collins was the hero, and
then villain for the Hatters the last
time both Luton and Cambridge
met in 2018. The striker latched
onto a parried shot to give the
visitors the lead after half an hour
before receiving his marching
orders following a late challenge
being deemed worthy of a second
yellow card 13 minutes from time.
United’s man advantage paid
dividens just six minutes later
when Jabo Ibehre headed in from
inside the six-yard-box to see the
points shared.
The Gaffer
Nathan Jones
DOB: 28.05.1973
POB: Blaenrhondda, Wales
The former Brighton and
Hove Albion fullback has
picked up where he left off
after re-signing at Kenilworth
in 2020 a year after
controversially leaving the
Hatters for Stoke City. The
Welsh head coach incredibly
guided the Hatters to
successive promotions
into the Championship
before leaving and has
since managed Luton to a
comfortable mid table finish
in the second tier last season
before spending the majority
of this campaign flirting
with the top six, and more
importantly sitting 19 points
above the bottom three
before Luton’s clash with
Swansea on Tuesday night –
an impressive feat given the
Hatters were third favourites
for relegation prior to the
season starting.
Sluga of the number
of December and has
Keeping four clean sheets
in his last eight games
as well as helping Luton
The versatile defender
coming on to replace
twenty minutes to play.
Having only scored one
goal last campaign, the
winger has really come
down both flank, scoring 7
goals in 18 Championship
starts this season.
The Hitman
Elijah Adebayo
Position: Forward
by James Collins leaving
to join Cardiff City in
the summer – scoring 11
FROM THE SLO
with Dave Matthew-Jones
THIS AFTERNOON WE WELCOME THE SUPPORTERS,
OFFICIALS AND PLAYING STAFF OF LUTON TOWN
TO THE ABBEY STADIUM.
Following the excitement
of playing against and
winning at Newcastle in
the last round we have
been rewarded with
a great home tie. For
me, the glamour and
excitement of the FA Cup
still holds a special place
in my football heart.
When I was young the draw was
always held on a Monday dinner
time and broadcasted live on the
radio. There was real excitement
when the numbers were being
drawn and anticipation concerning
who you would be drawn against.
I remember queueing for tickets
along Newmarket and Barnwell
Road to get tickets for a match
against Aston Villa. Now the
draws are on TV and the tickets
are sold online it seems a
bygone time.
It was of interest recently when I
heard the news that Trevor George
had been selected to play for the
England Over 65s. Trevor works
in the control box on Matchdays
nowadays and has been associated
with the club since childhood.
His father Albert played for both
Abbey & Cambridge United up to
the mid-1950s.
On another note, Margaret and
Frank Pearson are volunteers who
help Ian Darler at the club and I
wonder if we can help them with
their campaign to raise money and
awareness concerning MNGIE – a
rare genetic disorder.
The condition has had a huge
and tragic effect on their family,
with their daughter Gail having
passed away and their two other
daughters living with the disorder.
There is currently no treatment
and no cure.
Please help spread the word
or make a donation via their Just
Memories Down
Afternoon everybody
and welcome to
today’s knockout
teatime treat with
our old ‘non-league
rivals’ from down on
the A6. Let’s hope
the Hatters are just
mad at the end of
proceedings this
evening and not
having a tea party.
In a shameless break
with routine today we
are not focusing on the
5th February date for
our trip du nostalgia, but
the previous occasion we
met Luton in an FA Cup
encounter back on 3rd
January 2015. Famous
in itself for the victory
and what followed in the
competition, it is also
our only victory against
the Kenilworth Roaders
since we both returned to
civilisation in 2014. In fact,
in January 2017 we even
hired blowing equipment
Scan me to
read the archive
programme...
at a cost equivalent to
Ukraine’s wheat production
budget to beat the ice and
get the game on, but the
U’s players weren’t feeling it
that day.
Our 2014/15 cup run started
fairly ignominiously against
last weekend’s opponents,
Fleetwood Town. Not exactly
a Cod Army battering but
a late Kwesi Appiah goal
sealed matters and the
prospect of another home
tie - stag instead of fish
this time. Yet again, Kwesi
saved the day with a 90th
minute equaliser after Tom
Champion put the visitors
2-1 up with an own goal nine
minutes earlier.
The replay at Field Mill on
16th December attracted
a hostile crowd of 1,920.
Humble surroundings for
a young lad from South
London with ancestry in
Freetown, but it didn’t
deter Sullay Kalkai from
bagging what proved to be
the tiebreaker in the 10th
minute. And Hatters ahoy!
Two defeats and a draw in
the Christmas run-up didn’t
exactly whet the U’s fans’
appetite, but the magic of
the FA Cup can be piquant
and Ryan Donaldson served
the coup de grace in the
66th minute to double a lead
forged by Robbie Simpson
in the first half. Even a Luton
claw back eight minutes later
couldn’t mar our tea party
that day. Little did we know
back then what the Fourth
Round draw would have instore…
Enjoy yourselves.
Habbin
IT CAME AS NO SURPRISE TO ME THAT
SOME HABBINITES WERE DISAPPOINTED
WITH TODAY’S DRAW.
“It’s only Luton,” they said, “why couldn’t we have
drawn a big club?” Of course, you can’t please
everyone. Each triumph builds the taste for more
and yet the nature of the FA Cup is that you are as
likely to draw Barrow as you are Liverpool. That is
what we love about it. We should also remember
that we are at home, that the tie is winnable and
that we are playing a team in a higher league than
us. The main thing is that, although on paper Luton
should win, we could be in the next round.
It must be said that the Hatters are riding high in
the Championship with a decent chance of making
the playoffs at the end of the season. They have any
number of gifted players, including Luke Berry who
was a firm favourite here during two separate spells
with us. I hope that he enjoys his return to the Abbey
and receives the warm welcome he deserves, even if
he goes home defeated!
Luton, unlike us have played in the top tier and in
the cup final. However, like us, they have a venerable
ground which is no longer entirely fit for purpose and
a guided bus system which hasn’t always delivered
what it was meant to. They also know the frustration
of trying for years to get back into the league but
under Nathan Jones their ambitions go way beyond
that. We might well claim that under our own
Bill Shoemaker
When you’re riding, only the race in
which you’re riding is important.
manager the sky is the limit. Certainly we haven’t
looked out of place in our league and we are getting
better all the time. Ours is a team where everyone
plays for each other and never gives less than their
best. Paul Pogba wouldn’t get into it.
Some pundits have tried to claim that this fixture
qualifies as a local derby but I’m not having that. We
do have an interesting history of matches though,
some of which were shown on Anglia Television
on Match of the Week. More recently, I have vivid
memories of travelling with the Unofficial Travel Club
on the euphemistically named Battlebus with the
“Hooligan Grandads” of yore. This involved taking in
the odd glass of refreshment at the Molly Malone in
Hitchin and the late lamented Bedfordshire Yeoman
in Luton itself. The experience of entering the away
end on Oak Road beneath the bathrooms of local
residents is one of the more colourful aspects of
football as we all know it. The last time we played
each other we went on to play Manchester United
in the next round. If we triumph this time, I hope we
draw someone bigger and more glamorous.
Owen Mizon
FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE 1992,
THE ABBEY STADIUM GETS TO STAGE AN
FA CUP FOURTH ROUND TIE SINCE.
A glorious era for the United
faithful, blessed with a side who
thrived in the David vs Goliath
matchups. 30 years on, they’ve
re-enacted that cup euphoria in
what’s been a momentous cup
campaign to date - here’s to
some more! Before you become
indulged in cup fever, let’s digest
the trials and tribulations of Sky
Bet League One.
A rip-roaring performance saw
Rotherham United increase
their cushion at the summit of
the division to three points with
a devastating 0-5 victory over
troubled Doncaster Rovers. Mikel
Miller and Ben Wiles raced the
Millers into a healthy lead, before a
ruthless conclusion saw Chiedozie
Ogbene, Dan Barlaser and Jamie
Lindsay all convert as the visitors
secured their biggest ever win
against their South Yorkshire rivals.
Boasting the sternest defence - 18
conceded - and bulging the net
53 times, Paul Warne’s quest for
a third promotion from this level
remains fruitful. On the contrary,
seven losses in eight situates
Rovers to rock bottom and 11
points from safety.
Wigan Athletic retained 2nd
position and stretched their
unbeaten run to 20 games in all
competitions with a spirited 1-1
draw against Oxford United at the
DW Stadium. Matty Taylor broke
the deadlock with his 14th league
goal of the campaign before
Callum Lang’s strike just after
the half an hour mark ensured
that the honours remained even
in what was a gritty evening.
With a two-point advantage
and several games in hand over
their automatic promotion rivals,
the Latics are in good stead.
Plundering 11 goals in their last
three, there’s a feel-good factor
around the U’s too – they occupy
the final play-off spot after
reaching the 50-point mark.
Sheffield Wednesday struck at
decisive times to sink Morecambe
2-0 at Hillsborough. A sumptuous
second-half strike from George
Byers put the hosts into the
driving seat, before the Owls,
without Darren Moore due to a
positive Covid-19 test, weathered
a storm and clinched the points
when Nathaniel Mendez-Laing
with a deflected shot that trickled
into the far corner. Lodged in
8th, Wednesday sit four points
from the coveted top six. As for
the Shrimps, satisfactory recent
form means they remain the
frontrunners of the relegation zone
with a healthy six-point cushion
from 22nd.
A professional performance was
rewarded with a 2-0 triumph for
Bolton Wanderers as they did
battle with Cambridge United.
Neat finishes either side of the
interval from Amadou Bakayoko
and the unplayable Dapo Afolayan
handed the Trotters their fourth
win and clean sheet in succession
- they, quite literally, trot to 11th.
The sucker punch consigned Mark
Bonner’s men to their first defeat
of 2022 – but the positioning of
13th is a welcoming consolation.
Charlton Athletic capitalised
on Portsmouth’s tricky start to
the new year with a 1-2 success
at Fratton Park in front of the
Sky Sports cameras. Conor
Washington broke the deadlock
soon after 30 minutes, before an
own goal from Clark Robertson
put Johnnie Jackson’s side in
the ascendency. Michael Jacobs
emerged from the bench to
restore hope, but the Addicks
remained firm as they held out
for a sixth consecutive league
victory over Pompey. Back-to-back
wins climbs the London side to
15th, whereas five games without
maximum points means Danny
Cowley’s men are solidified in
12th.
AFC Wimbledon and Cheltenham
Town played out an entertaining
2-2 draw at Plough Lane. Ayoub
Assal’s early drive home was
cancelled out by Alfie May’s
quickfire brace. Goals are always
guaranteed when these outfits
meet, so it’s to no surprise that
substitute Aaron Cosgrave
rescued a point apiece with a late
equaliser. Both under pressure
and neither without a win in their
last nine, the Dons are 20th and
just two points adrift whereas
the Robins are looking over their
shoulders in 16th.
Neil Harris’ first match in charge
of Gillingham proved to be
an exhilarating one as his side
dispatched Crewe Alexandra 1-0
to banish their 14-game winless
run – their worst form in 33 years.
A pivotal clash at the bottom of
the pile, a first-half penalty from
Danny Lloyd did the damage for
the hosts - perhaps fitting after
conceding four from the spot in
their previous outing. Lifted to
23rd, the Gills are now tied on 22
points with the Railwaymen, who
themselves are winless in four,
with both sides eager to bridge an
eight-point gap.
Another Saturday and
another fantastic game to
look forward to!
After a terrific day in Newcastle
we now have the chance to get
behind the team and get the
Abbey rocking once again in the
FA Cup. On behalf of everyone
connected with the Women’s
team, I want to wish Mark and
all the players and staff the very
best of luck. Hopefully come the
end of the game we can be in
the hat for the next round.
Last weekend we had no game so
instead we had an extra training
session. The previous game vs QPR
saw us defeated despite having
more chances than our opponents,
clearly showing how we need to
be better in both boxes. So the
opportunity to keep working on
that over the weekend was good
timing. This Sunday we are back
in league action and have a trip to
Kent Football United as we look to
turn some of those statistics into
the vital ones that count.
The Development team did
however have a game last
weekend - away to West Ham
Development. Despite the 4-1
defeat, there were positives to
take from the game and especially
from the second half. The return
of Niamh Day to the side was a
particular bright point. Her second
half goal further displayed her
potential in her first season of
senior football. This week the
Development team travel to face
MK Dons as they continue their
league campaign.
Finally, I want to highlight a
couple of dates for your diary.
On Wednesday 16th February we
face Cambridge City at St Neots
Town FC in the big home derby
fixture in a 7.45pm kick off. We
would love your support in what
promises to be a great game.
Then, on Sunday 27th February
the we will be playing the league
fixture against Norwich City
at the Abbey Stadium at 2pm.
Not only is it a chance to see the
Women’s team play at the Abbey,
but also it’s a vital game where
every bit of support will help. We
would love to see you there to get
behind the players.
Now let’s make some noise and
turn the volume up to support the
lads as we try to get to the next
round this afternoon… Come on
you U’s!
Our partners at the Abbey Food Hub
serve an average of 55 households
a week with fresh food and store
cupboard essentials, to help where
families are struggling to afford enough
food. The Food Hub also does its bit for
climate change. In their first year they
saved 25,000 kg of food from going
to waste, which is equivalent to saving
over 62,000 kg of carbon emissions!
The period between January and April are
the hardest months at the Food Hub.
Following the Christmas celebrations,
January and February tend to be tight
months for everyone which means we get
less tinned food donations. The ‘Hungry
Gap’ - a period in Spring when hardly any
fresh veg grows in the UK, means that the
level of fresh food that comes through the
Food Hub’s doors drops significantly.
This means the Food Hub has to rely far
more heavily on tinned food to make sure
that their visitors still have access to food.
This comes at a time when people are
struggling to afford to heat their homes,
so the food that they can pick up at the
Food Hub is crucial, allowing them to
spend as much of their income as possible
on keeping their homes warm.
This is why we are challenging Cambridge
United Fans to bring food donations to
the Accrington Stanley match on Saturday
19th February.
U’s fans can bring along any of the following:
Tinned vegetables
Tinned fruit
Tinned fish
Tinned meat
Jars of pasta and curry sauce
Tinned chopped tomatoes
Baked beans
Tinned soup
Long-life milk
Tea and coffee
We will have collection points set up
around the ground to drop off as you
come in. The donations will go directly to
helping people in our community to have
enough to eat.
If you can’t bring any tins with you, you
can make a donation to support our work
in the community through the Hungry
Gap. Text ABBEY followed by your
donation amount to 70450 to give that
amount.
Texts will cost the donation amount
plus one standard network rate
message, and you’ll be opting into
hearing more from us. If you would
like to donate but don’t wish to
hear more from us, please text
ABBEYNOINFO instead.
ANOTHER TRANSFER WINDOW CLOSED ON MONDAY,
WITH THE USUAL SCRAMBLE FOR PLAYERS UP TO THE
11.00PM DEADLINE, IN ALL FOUR TOP DIVISIONS.
Fans across the land sat, fingers
crossed, in front of their chosen
sports channel, for news that
their club had signed the striker
that was going to keep them up,
the central defender who was
going to plug gaps at the back
or the experienced midfielder
enforcer who would drive them
on to promotion.
A good opportunity to recruit no
doubt but, in some quarters, it
appeared to resemble a gambling
game of player Tetris, with the
revolving door at several clubs
seeing a dozen or so more players
leaving or departing, with an
element of panic, inflated fees
and, perhaps in some cases, the
appeasement of supporters.
It was interesting to note that in
the Premier League, the bottom
five clubs alone spent 50% of the
total collective outlay of £295m.
Newcastle - as expected – invested
heavily, with close to £50m of
their £93m total spend realised in
the final 24 hours alone, Everton
scribbled a cheque for £23m to
bring Lucas Digne to Goodison
Park as the clock ticked, whilst
time will tell if the £16.1m Watford
spent will keep them in the top
flight. I’m not a betting man but,
even I would wager the bottom
five clubs now, may well be the
same five come the end of the
season. In what order, who knows,
but the unlucky two dropping into
the Championship, may well be
saddled with players who do not
want to play at that level, with
weighty salaries proving a millstone
for their employers, whose annual
income will reduce dramatically.
In our own division, the current
bottom four sides engineered
a head-turning 30 transfers in
and out of their respective clubs
during the window. Admittedly,
this may freshen up the squad
to an extent, but how much of it
is knee-jerk short termism that
is not necessarily improving the
squad? Is there pressure to act,
given league positions, or was the
recruitment process carried out
the previous summer, not what it
should have been?
Away from the transfer carousel,
it is good to be back on home
soil today after three lengthy road
trips in eight days and 1,124 miles
travelled. The previous game at
the Abbey saw nearly 5,500 come
through the turnstiles, which
edged the U’s past the 100,000
mark for the season. The average
league gate is 5,800 whilst for all
competition it edges towards 4,600
– a figure that will be improved
thanks to today’s full house!
I HAVE OFTEN BEEN ASKED WHY I JOINED
CFU AND WHY I SPEND SO MANY HOURS
PRODUCING THE AMBER NEWS.
The answers are related and very
much connected to a conversation
I had with John Howard as the U’s
were sliding out of the league and
approaching possible liquidation.
The game was the one which
confirmed our relegation from the
football league and feelings were
running high about the fact that two
of our directors had sold our ground
to themselves. A police officer
warned me about my conduct but,
to be fair, John Howard told her
that I was being both polite and
reasonable. He talked about a new
all-seater stadium, which is yet to
materialise and suggested that
football fans don’t really understand
the important issues. A fellow
director was even more critical of
our fans and used surprisingly foul
language to tell me so. Perhaps he
was unsettled by the fact that the
Unofficial Away Supporters’ Club
had sponsored the game and were
present in large numbers. No matter.
History shows what happened
next. Dave Matthew-Jones and
others effectively formed CFU to
fight for the future of our club.
They desperately tried to raise
funds to buy the ground back
but, alas, it was sold to Grosvenor
for rather more than was paid for
it. One day we will have a new
ground and it is my profound hope
that CFU will have a financial stake
in it as a guarantee that it will
never be owned by people outside
the club.
Why is this relevant? Look at Derby
County’s struggle for survival and
what happened to Bury. The fans
who lose their clubs are the ones
who suffer most but the collapse
of their clubs is clearly not their
fault. This is why the game needs
proper, effective and external
regulation. Regulation that is
meaningful so that football clubs
are safe from irresponsible or
incapable owners. This is why the
club are backing the Fans Led
Review and urging fans to contact
their MPs about it. We need a
fairer distribution of wealth and
more formal arrangements for
the representation of fans in their
clubs. Working together effectively
is surely better than fans groups
having to react after the horse has
bolted and better for clubs too.
Of course there is no crisis at
Cambridge United now so there
will be those who feel that CFU
no longer have a role. Perhaps
it is less clear since I don’t want
to believe that we are always
preparing for the next crisis. I
believe that our current role is a
very productive and supportive
one. The lottery do a brilliant job
of finding extra funding for the
club. Only recently, an emergency
stretcher and robust wheelchair
for medical emergencies were
bought for the club. We have the
electronic scoreboards and much
has been provided to support the
work of expert Groundsman Ian
Darler and his staff.
When the club decided that it
wasn’t economic to run Away
Travel, CFU took on the job. DMJ
and Gina Parkin have done a
fantastic job of running coaches to
away games which fans wouldn’t
have got to otherwise. Again,
the lottery sponsored coaches to
Newcastle for £500 which meant
that more fans could go and that
seats were cheaper. Please support
Away Travel as much as you can in
the future. So many people benefit
from it. We have played a part in
the return of printed programmes
and organised the player of the
season poll last year. Fans can
approach any of us in the ground.
We have distinctive lanyards. We
can be contacted at the caravan
at the front of the ground. This
also features a brilliant programme
exchange.
Finally, we are holding our AGM
on April 25th. This is a chance for
members to help us shape our role
for the future. It is my wish that we
make equality and diversity real
targets and not just soundbites. I
want us to work more closely with
CUSP and other fans’ groups. I
want us to support the work of
the club as much as we can and
establish a much closer relationship
with those who run it. I hope they
feel the same. We will also need
to choose a new Fans Elected
Director who will help us achieve
these things and work closely
with the committee I am proud to
lead. More than anything I want
Cambridge fans to be the best
provided for fans in the country.
Aim high!
