1901 a light morning mist enveloped the town, and its streets
and houses and the trees of the avenues where the last
yellowtinted remains of summer verdure still lingered, while the
sun, gradually breaking through the haze and illuminating the
picture with its pallid rays, shone down also upon the members
of the Swedish South Polar Expedition making their way to
their vessel, which lay at the quay gaily dressed in bunting as
though in preparation for a feast.Crowds of people are already
assembled at the water's edge, and many others are hurrying
to the spot, when we go on board attended by our closest
friends and relations, to find everything in order for the voyage.
