The Art of <strong>Medallion</strong>s<br />
These jewels of the ceiling have been around for a long<br />
time and are the focal point of interior design. In the<br />
early homes of distinction,<br />
they were hand crafted in<br />
plaster then painted or foiled<br />
with gold in only the palaces<br />
of the elite. As an applied<br />
delicate ceiling motif, it took<br />
artisans hundreds of hours to<br />
create and install these gems<br />
by hand.<br />
Finally, a less complicated<br />
idea allowed the medallion<br />
to be cast from plaster as a<br />
whole piece and actually be plastered into place on the<br />
ceiling as one unit. This allowed for the mass production<br />
of this magnificent art form making it available to<br />
the average home at a fraction of the original cost of<br />
the hand crafted masterpieces.<br />
Technical progress and urbanization resulted in more<br />
people having medallions in their own homes. Ceiling<br />
heights were lower than that of the larger palaces<br />
of royalty, thus the chandeliers were hung closer to the<br />
ceiling. This became a problem particularly with the<br />
proximity of the candle flame to the ceiling above. The<br />
whole piece plaster medallion became an excellent,<br />
economical way to create a non-combustible fire barrier<br />
between the ceiling and the open flames. It even<br />
allowed for wall paper to adorn a ceiling with less fear<br />
of fire. The introduction of gas lamps, although safer,<br />
still required a heat and fire barrier just as the candles<br />
did in earlier times.<br />
As the electric age dawned, medallions became less<br />
of a functional entity and more of an anchor for ceiling<br />
decoration. Now available to all, through mass production,<br />
these gems of ceiling decor are economical and<br />
easy to install. Plaster requires professional installation,<br />
so producers have made them from lite weight<br />
ArchPolymerTM. This synthetic wood installs with glue<br />
and looks like detailed plaster<br />
at a fraction of the cost.<br />
Our collection can be made from NeoPlasterTM in order<br />
to provide the necessary ASTM-E84 non combustible<br />
fire rating for commercial applications. You can<br />
also order the ArchPolymerTM medallions treated with<br />
a fire retardant primer that provides 2 hrs of protection.<br />

As a major element of interior design, medallions<br />
have evolved from delicate rococo spider lines, to the<br />
heavier acanthus leaves, to the elegant lines of the<br />
Federal period, to the modern waves of Art Deco.<br />
Today they are the focal point of interest in a room,<br />
create an illusion of height, and are a major element<br />
setting the style of the room.<br />
At Martin RichardsDesignTM we try to incorporate the<br />
various traditional elements in a more modern context.<br />
The medallion above, IPMRD8002, combines the traditional<br />
egg and dart molding with acanthus leaves in<br />
a symmetrical layout. The four baguettes enhance the<br />
three dimensional effect. This wonderful design has<br />
three similar matching sizes. For those that are looking<br />
for the modernism that was<br />
expressed in the Art Deco<br />
period, we created<br />
IPMRD8012 or<br />
IPMRD8014 ovals.<br />
The graduated ovals are<br />
smooth and can appeal to many modern collections.<br />
Our new rectangle medallion has over 30 metal inserts<br />
and holes can be drilled anywhere on the surface area.<br />
The ceiling medallion is a truly brilliant gem that has<br />
evolved from pure decoration, to fire protector, to the<br />
epicenter of a room’s style.

Install Notes<br />
Note: Always use a professional certified electrician to install any electrical device that must be hard wired.<br />
These notes are guidelines only. For your situation, consult a professional and adhere to local building codes.<br />
1) Weights: <strong>Medallion</strong>s are decorative only and do not hold weight. Any fixture must be hung by the<br />
electrical recepticle threaded rod. For heavy fixtures, re-enforce the ceiling rafters to hold the weight.<br />
2) Power: Make sure there is no power to the recepticle box.<br />
Turn off the breaker and confirm with an electric tester.<br />
3) Mark the Spot: Hole the medallion center to the recepticle<br />
box and trace out the outside of the medallion on the ceiling.<br />
4) Preparation: Lightly sand and remove all dust or popcorn<br />
plaster (stucco) from the ceiling prior to install to ensure a flat<br />
surface.<br />
5) Hole: Order your medallion with a precut specified hole or<br />
drill a hole yourself ensuring it is slightly larger than the size<br />
of the recepticle box.<br />
6) Paint the medallion before you install - allow 24 hrs to dry<br />
7) Apply the Adhesive. Use approved adhesive only<br />
that is safe for ArchPolymerTM - put multiple small<br />
blobs on the back side of the medallion. Use this<br />
same adhesive for Neo-Plaster-GRG.<br />
8) Use 4 screws to temporarily hold the medallion or<br />
preferably use a brad nailer to affix the medallion to the<br />
ceiling. Use only a few brad nails as they are just<br />
holding the medallion till the<br />
adhesive dries. In the case of<br />
Neo-Plaster-GRG use screws<br />
only and countersink them to<br />
be filled later.<br />
9) Check to make sure the medallion is level on all sides. If it is not use a small<br />
wedge to pry one side downward until all sides are even. This is the time to correct<br />
any unevenness. Make sure you have pulled the wires through the center hole.<br />
10) Allow to dry for a few hours or overnight.<br />
11) Fixing the gap between the medallion and the ceiling. Apply the Vinyl Spackling<br />
compound with your finger or a small flat trowel to the edges of the medallion. Let<br />
dry and sand lightly or wet sand during application. DO NOT use caulking. Caulking<br />
tends to dry out over time and shrinks. The vinyl splacking is plaster with polymers and<br />
stays flexible but can be sanded unlike caulking. Fill all countersunk screws or brad<br />
nails. Touch up with paint over spackling compound.<br />
12) Electrical hookup - wires go though the threaded rod and should be<br />
installed by a qualified electrician.<br />

SALES TERMS AND CONDITIONS<br />
<strong>Imperial</strong> Productions & Distribution Inc. herein after "<strong>Imperial</strong>". <strong>Imperial</strong> does not manufacture goods only distributes goods.<br />
1) Client Privacy: Client data is never traded, rented or sold. <strong>Imperial</strong> communicates with client or authorized representatives only.<br />
2) Products: Any advise recommended by <strong>Imperial</strong> is without prejudice and is believed to be reliable. <strong>Imperial</strong> does not make any<br />
warranty expressed or implied for the fitness of particular products or their suitability in application or the results obtained; this<br />
must come from your contractor, structural engineer, registered designer or architect. The client or their tradesperson must test<br />
and verify product use and suitability for themselves. <strong>Imperial</strong> does not sell finished goods,-only architectural components.<br />
Integration hardware and installation is supplied by others. Photos and material photos on <strong>Imperial</strong>s' websites or<br />
publications are close representations only and may vary in appearance and color from the actual goods.<br />
Sizes are approximate only and may change without prior notice, due to manufacturing variance tolerances. Availability: Products change<br />
from time to time and can be discontinued or altered due to factors beyond our control or marketing decisions.<br />

I acknowledge that the exclusive intellectual property rights belong and remain with <strong>Imperial</strong>.<br />
Fire Rating & Building Code: All products have various fire ratings and code compliance.<br />
Check with your local building codes for suitability of any product and your own structural engineer for application.<br />
Load Bearing: Capacity is approximate as specified by the manufacturer. Check with your own structural engineer.<br />
3) Quotes: This quote is valid for 5 days. Quotes become orders once payment is authorized and confirmed which denotes<br />
acceptance by <strong>Imperial</strong>. <strong>Imperial</strong> does not accept verbal orders. Payment confirmations are emailed or faxed. <strong>Imperial</strong> is not liable<br />
for time delays caused by the quoting process. Delivery times take effect from the date of confirmed payment, not the quote date.<br />
Ownership of goods is transferred to client once full payment of the quote is received and confirmed by <strong>Imperial</strong>.<br />
Prices: Prices do not include Taxes or Duty. Client is responsible for all tax submissions unless quoted where <strong>Imperial</strong> is<br />
obligated by law to charge taxes in a given jurisdiction. Any retroactive taxes or duties are the client's responsibility.<br />
Any additional charges imposed by credit card holder's issuing bank are not <strong>Imperial</strong>'s responsibility.<br />
Brokerage may apply to exported or imported items for Border Customs clearance. If at any time (even retroactive) duty is imposed, it is<br />
the responsibility of the client (importer). Interest is set at 2% per month, 26% per annum for overdue accounts.<br />
4) Product Orders: All sales are final. All sales occur in Toronto Ontario Canada and are subject to Ontario Canada laws.<br />
It is agreed that all dispute resolutions occur in Toronto ON Canada only. Any disputes resolution will not exceed product value.<br />
Your purchase order does not constitute acceptance of an order by <strong>Imperial</strong>. Any conflicting conditions in your written purchase order are superceded and<br />
nullified by this agreement.<br />
Custom Orders cannot be changed, returned, cancelled or exchanged. Expect longer delivery times for custom orders.<br />
Drawings: Any drawings are theoretical representations only. Actual products may have minor variances from the drawings due to manufacturing tolerances.<br />
For custom quotes drawings will be provided once full payment is received prior to production as a courtesy to confirm product details.<br />
Timeline for shop drawing sign off is 10 business days otherwise manufacturing will proceed.<br />
Materials: Any product made from natural materials may vary in texture, color and naturally occuring features.<br />
There may be minor variances between each piece. There is no guarantee that subsequent orders will be exact to the products<br />
produced in this order. For custom finishes there may be variances between photos and samples.<br />
Order Changes cannot occur once this quote is signed. Manufacturing begins once the order is accepted by <strong>Imperial</strong>.<br />
Any product that is ordered from manufacturing for a client is considered a custom order. No refunds, All sales final, no returns or substitutions.<br />
5) Delivery Times: Quotes provide approximate estimate of delivery time. This estimate is not guaranteed. Delays can occur<br />
by freight carriers, weather, border customs, holidays, strikes, acts of war, act of god or changing manufacturing schedule all out of <strong>Imperial</strong>'s control.<br />
Receipt of templates or plugs & shop drawing sign offs can effect delivery times.<br />
For a guaranteed delivery time a separate delivery agreement can be prepared by our legal department, bonding charges apply.<br />
Do not book your install trades until you have your product in hand and have inspected the goods for freight damage.<br />
6) Freight: Prices are FOB manufacturer’s factory or FOB Canadian Warehouse or FOB US warehouse.<br />
Freight is prepaid on client's behalf and non-refundable. Freight may include freight-in to the warehouse and freight out to the client.<br />
All shipments require a signature upon receipt of goods. Tracking details will be provided once the order has left the dock.<br />
Freight Claims for Goods Damaged or Lost in Transit:<br />
All sales are EXW warehouse. All items are inspected & photographed prior to shipping.<br />
When the carrier accepts product, all risk reverts to the purchaser. <strong>Imperial</strong> is not responsible for any damage<br />
that incurs in transit, concealed or otherwise or delays caused by the carrier. All goods should be unpacked and<br />
inspected immediately upon receipt. Any and all damages should be noted on the Bill of Lading when product is delivered<br />
If the client gives the transportation company a clear receipt for goods received that have been damaged or lost in transit,<br />
the client does so at their own risk and expense. All claims are with the freight carrier not <strong>Imperial</strong>. For most freight carriers,<br />
claims must be made within 8 working days. If an order is refused, all transit & storage fees are the responsibility of the client.<br />
All charges incured will be billed accordingly.<br />
7) Warranty & Guarantees are with the product’s respective manufacturer not <strong>Imperial</strong>. Product specifications are those of manufacturing.<br />
<strong>Imperial</strong> does not manufacture product. All manufacturer warranties are limited and in effect for the original purchaser only from the time<br />
of payment and are non-transferable.<br />
<strong>Imperial</strong> warrants that goods at the time of delivery will correspond to the description given by <strong>Imperial</strong> in <strong>Imperial</strong>'s Warranty Policy stated in<br />
it's website's, which may change from time to time without notice. All other warranties, conditions or terms relating to the condition of the goods,<br />
their quality or the merchantability of the goods, or the fitness of the goods for a particular use or purpose, whether such use or purpose is<br />
made known to <strong>Imperial</strong> or not, whether implied by statute or common law or otherwise, are excluded.<br />
All products manufactured by others but furnished by <strong>Imperial</strong> are the original manufacturer's warranty and <strong>Imperial</strong> shall not be liable under<br />
any circumstances for defects in such products. Because goods furnished hereunder are to client's specifications and are used or combined<br />
by client with other equipment or components not furnished by <strong>Imperial</strong>, client agrees to indemnify <strong>Imperial</strong> for all claims resulting from the use or<br />
incorporation of said goods in the client's product.<br />
It is expressly agreed that this warranty is in lieu of of any and all other warranties and liabilities, expressed or implied, including but not limited<br />
to any warranty of merchantability of fitness for any purpose and any liability for consequential damages arising out of the use of the product<br />
sold hereunder. The forgoing states <strong>Imperial</strong>'s entire and exclusive liability and client's exclusive and sole remedy. <strong>Imperial</strong> will in no event be<br />
liable for any consequential, special or contingent damage or expense arising directly or indirectly from any defect in it's goods or from the use<br />
thereof, nor is any other person authorized to assume for <strong>Imperial</strong> any such liability.<br />
Claims: In order to claim warranty, we recommend taking digital photos of the item in question and emailing them to us with a short note of explanation<br />
Upon receipt, <strong>Imperial</strong> will forward your claim to the respective manufacturer. Before issuing a Return Authorization Number for warranty<br />
we must get approval from the manufacturer that they will honor the claim. Some manufacturers reserve the right to repair the product.<br />
All shipping for warranty claims are the responsibility of the client, not <strong>Imperial</strong>. Any clearance items are sold "as is" and there is no warranty.<br />
Open boxes within 8 days of delivery: Inspect for damages and report any discrepancies. No adjustments will be made for discrepancies not reported<br />
within 8 days of receipt.
