Global rap superstar, Dave, grew up in Streatham. The track ‘Streatham’ from the hit album
Disco
Every Sunday morning,
Kingsmead Rd hosts a
socially distant street disco,
as featured in The Guardian
last weekend. Like so
many Streatham streets,
Kingsmead has an active
community spirit. Resident
Sonia organised delivering
flyers offering support to
every home and those with
gardens have been leaving
flowers on the doorsteps of
flats.
The DJs behind the event,
Rob Cockburn, a lawyer, and
Barny North, who works in
digital media, have strung
bunting between their
houses, and Rob normally
wears a costume, according
to neighbour, Simon Lycett.
Of the playlist, Barny North
says, “It’s very eclectic. A
bit of pop. Mostly jazz, a
bit of RnB, a bit of reggae.”
Rob, Simon, and families - by Orlando Gilli
His final track was Nina
Simone’s Feeling Good.
Neighbour Andrea Mulligan
says Barny and Rob have
mastered the art of DJing for
a motley lockdown crowd.
“We come to our gates and
give people a wave and just
enjoy the music. It’s a nice
moment of unity.”
Thanks to the Guardian and
At The Rookery Café on Streatham
Common, chefs Frank & Dan have been
working with wonderful local charity Critical
NHS to deliver meals to frontline teams at
St. George’s Hospital in Tooting. Regular
customer and Streatham resident Guy Henry
(AKA Henrik Hanssen of the BBC’s Holby
City, also of Star Wars & Harry Potter) has
also lent a helping hand taking deliveries to
the hospital.
Recipes have been designed to fuel workers
on long shifts and dishes cooking in the
Teams at The Rookery Cafe and sister
Skylark Café on Wandsworth Common,
have also boosted the spirits of residents and
heroes working hard in local care homes.
The group baked and funded delicious boxes
of biscuits and cakes, delivered by Charlie,
Frank, Hannah and Guy Henry. Deliveries so
far have been made to Joybrook Care Home
on Braxted Park, Gibson’s Lodge on Beulah
Hill and Bluebird Care plus three care homes
in Wandsworth. Staff at the homes were able
to enjoy a scrummy selection of carrot cake,
raspberry cupcakes, chocolate chip cookies
and shortbreads and other sweet delights.
If you have links with a local care home and
would like to nominate them to receive a
goody box, drop the team a note at to
deliver a treat.
STREATHAM CELEBRATES
VE DAY 1945
The 8th May marks the 75th anniversary of VE Day in 1945 -
Victory in Europe Day.
KING GEORGE VI VICTORY TOUR OF STREATHAM 10 MAY 1945 AT SUNNYHILL SCHOOL COPYRIGHT LOCAL HISTORY PUBLICATIONS
SUNNYHILL ROAD VE DAY STREET PARTY - COPYRIGHT LOCAL HISTORY PUBLICATIONS
Following the signing of the German surrender
the previous day, Prime Minister Winston
Churchill announced the 8th May would be a
public holiday so the nation could celebrate the
cessation of hostilities on the continent. The War
effort to defeat Japan in the Far East resumed
afterwards, and three months later VJ Day was
observed on the 15th August and the second
world war came to an end.
May 8th saw an outbreak of celebrations
throughout Streatham where numerous street
parties were hurriedly organised to mark the
occasion. Tables and chairs were laid out in the
centre of roads and home-made bunting and flags
were hung from lamp posts and the windows of
neighbouring houses.
While men were preparing the road ladies busied
themselves in their kitchens preparing party food
for the children to enjoy - no simple task, given
the strict rationing that was then in place. Other
residents organised party games, sports and
other amusements to entertain the children.
Typical of such parties was that held in Cunliffe
Street, Streatham, which was organised by
Mrs D Miles. After the children had feasted on
sandwiches, cakes and orange squash a special
treat was brought to the table in the form of a
large quantity of ice cream which was donated by
local resident, Mr Wicherson.
Following this sumptuous feast races were
organised further along the road, with many of
the mothers joining in the fun and participating
in the three-legged and wheelbarrow races. At
the conclusion of the afternoon, prizes donated
by local residents were
distributed among the
children with Ronny Elmer
being given a handsome boat
for winning the most races
and Margaret Williams being
presented with a pair of silver
salt-cellars as the leading girl
racer.
Later that evening the
festivities continued around
hastily erected bonfires,
with particularly large blazes
organised in Westcote and
Strathdale Roads.
Two days later, Streatham's
celebrations were concluded
when King George VI,
Queen Elizabeth and the
two princesses, Elizabeth
(our present Queen) and
Margaret her sister, made
an official visit to the town
to inspect local civil defence
forces at Sunnyhill Road
School. Large crowds lined
the streets to welcome the
Royal party, including a
number of Italian Prisoners of
War who were working in the
neighbourhood.
The King was greeted at the
entrance to the school by
the Mayor of Wandsworth
and was led through the
crowds of cheering children
in the playground to inspect
the various detachments on
parade including members of
Streatham's ARP unit.
It was to be over a year
later, on 8th June 1946,
that Wandsworth council
organised official Victory
celebrations on Streatham
Common when thousands of
local residents and children
gathered there to once again
celebrate the end of the
Second World War.
As part of the Retail,
UK High Streets are on the brink of collapse
as the eight-week countdown to the next
quarterly rent instalment begins today, according
to the #RaiseTheBar campaign.
This is a collective campaign designed to
support the people that work for and run
businesses in the retail, hospitality and leisure
sectors. Across the UK, there are individual,
personal concerns and uncertainties surrounding
the economy and the effect that
COVID-19 will have on them. In amending
the rateable value from £51,000 to £150,000,
we not only save businesses but we also save
jobs.
STREATHAM’S STREETSPACE
CHALLENGE
Lambeth Council has
immediately wrote to Lambeth
helping Streatham bicycle
published plans for reducing
Council and TfL alerting them to
commuters by expediting
road danger and the risk of
pinch points on Streatham High
Cycle Quietway Route 5 from
COVID-19 transmission as
Rd.
Norbury to Waterloo. This would
part of a Transport Strategy
Emergency Response
(TSER). This includes
immediate changes to the
highway to allow physical
distancing to take place at high
priority locations in line with
Government guidance.
None of the locations
mentioned is in Streatham.
Neil says: “Similar issues are
being experienced close to bus
stops on a number of other
high streets across London, so
we shall wait to see whether
temporarily cordoning off a part
of the bus lane close to these
two bus stops for as long as
social distancing measures
need to be in place may be the
involve asking Wandsworth
Council to allow the route to
cross Tooting Common, where
cycling is currently prohibited.
Quietways are continuous cycle
routes on less-busy backstreets
across London. They are
marked with purple signs and
are good for people who want
to cycle on lower-traffic streets.
best answer for sorting out this
Three priority areas are
problem.”
identified in the Council’s
Neil Salt
This is because problematic
areas are on Streatham High
Rd, which is under the control
of Transport for London. We
expect Lambeth recognise that
this is a significant problem in
some places in Streatham. In
places like those pictured –
Almost concurrently, the Mayor
of London and TfL announced
the Streetspace initiative,
giving space to new cycle
lanes and wider pavements
to enable social distancing.
Wider footways on high streets
will facilitate local economic
recovery by allowing space to
queue for shops and for people
to safely pass while socially
distancing.
adopted Low Traffic
Neighbourhood Plan: Oval,
Streatham Hill, and Valley Road
(see our last issue for details).
It proposes
bringing
forward trial
measures
in one or
more of
these areas
as soon as
possible to
outside a general store opposite
Streatham Green, and outside
Boot’s Optician – we urge TfL
to stop shop displays restricting
pavement width, and to extend
pathways into the roads with
temporary infrastructure.
We raised the issue with Neil
Salt, Chair of Streatham Action
Transport after receiving a big
response to posting photos
on @heartstreatham. He
TfL anticipate that cycling could
increase 10-fold and walking
five-fold post-lockdown, and
they aim rapidly to repurpose
London’s streets to serve
demand. Creating new walking
and cycling on the A23 between
Oval and Streatham Hill was
specified – though no details
have been released yet.
The TSER also mentions
reduce road
danger and prevent increased
traffic levels once movement
restrictions are eased. The
‘Oval triangle’ is the one most
likely to be prioritised due to its
link to the full implementation of
Cycleway 5. Unfortunately, the
map of the proposed route is
missing from the TfL website. -
The Food Care Packs Project
We heard about Afsha Mohamed and Rifka
Khan because as soon as the lockdown
started they were posting in our local COVID
Mutual Aid WhatsApp group for volunteers
to collect food packs from them to deliver
around south London .
The friends set up The
Food Care Packs Project
on 23rd March to help
vulnerable people in the
community. “Initially, we
made around 25 food care
packs and shared them on
the Lambeth Mutual Aid
page to encourage others
Nisha to set up similar initiatives
in their areas. This was
early in the lockdown, before Lambeth had
set anything up.” Said Afsha.
With the help of family, friends, mosques,
church groups, Mutual Aid groups, and other
organisations they have now supported many
people.
“Our packs have been going to the elderly,
single mothers, care leavers, those waiting
for Universal Credit or struggling financially,
those with health issues, women living in
refuges and many more.” Recipients live all
over South London and deliveries are made
by local people who have joined Streatham
Mutual Aid Volunteer groups.
“We have been sad to see people on
our doorsteps, who do not have enough
food - some have gone hungry for days
before reaching out. We have been able
to provide them with
practical help and
signpost them towards
long-term support,” said
Afsha, “The Streatham
community has been
amazing and so
supportive.”
The group has been able
to fulfil every request
for food with door to
Afsha
door delivery through
residents’ volunteering. “Everyone has had a
can-do attitude and whenever a request has
been put in for a delivery, someone has come
forward, in most cases within 10 minutes of
posting. I’m really proud to be from SW16”,
commented Afsha.
Recipients of the Food Care Packs have
made some heart-warming comments.
“l salute you ladies for your kind deeds..Stay
blessed and safe”
“I can’t thank you enough…You're all angels.”
“We don’t even know one another and have
never even crossed paths before… and you
cared for me”
“ I tell my family back home that you give
me food box for free and there is a Good
Samaritan. I also tell my friends; I cannot
keep it to myself! A million thanks!”
Afsha and Rifka are now also working closely
with SWAN (Southern Women’s Aid Network)
to offer food packs to those in need in South
West London. - Jane Wroe Wright
