Hobbiton, 2001Approaching his 111th birthday,the Hobbit Bilbo Baggins beginswriting down the full story of hisadventure 60 years earlier for thebenefit of his nephew Frodo.Long before Bilbo‘s involvement,the Dwarf king Thrór brought anera of prosperity for his kin underthe Lonely Mountain until the arrivalof the dragon Smaug. Destroyingthe nearby town of Dale,Smaug drove the Dwarves outof their mountain and took theirhoard of gold. Thrór‘s grandson,Thorin, sees King Thranduil andhis Wood-elves on a nearby hillside,and is dismayed when theyleave rather than aid his people,resulting in Thorin‘s everlastinghatred of Elves.In the Shire, 50-year-old Bilbois tricked by the wizard Gandalfthe Grey into hosting a party forThorin and his company of Dwarves:Balin, Dwalin, Fíli, Kíli, Dori,Nori, Ori, Óin, Glóin, Bifur, Bofur,and Bombur. Gandalf‘s aim is torecruit Bilbo as the company‘s„burglar“ to aid them in their questan UnexpectedJourneyto enter the Lonely Mountain. Bilbois unwilling to accept at first,but has a change of heart afterthe company leaves without himthe next day. Bilbo races to jointhe company.FACTSA fi lm adaptation of J. R. R. Tolkien‘snovel The Hobbit (1937)was in development for severalyears after the critical andfi nancial success of The Lordof the Rings fi lm trilogy (2001–2003), co-written, co-produced,and directed by Peter Jackson.Jackson was initially going toproduce a two-fi lm adaptationof The Hobbit, which was to bedirected by Guillermo del Toro.Del Toro left the project in May2010, after about two years ofworking with Jackson and hisproduction team, due to delayscaused in part by fi nancial problemsat Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.Jackson was announced asdirector that October.29
