The book entitled ‘Acounting for Managers-Theory
&Practice’is prepared as per VTU syllabus 2020.
The book is very simple and explained the accounting
concepts precisely which helps the students from different
backgrounds to understand easily. The book is organized into
six modules which are briefed below.Chapter-1 Introduction to
Accounting: The purpose of this module is to introduce the
reader to basics of accounting such as branches and methods
of accounting, single entry and double entry system of book
keeping, objectives of accounting, accounting cycle,
accounting equation, users of accounting, GAAP, different
accounting concepts and conventions, various books of
accounts such as journal, subsidiary books and ledger
accounts. It also explains types of accounts and rules of
accounts used in passing journal entries and finally
preparation of trial balance with its merits and demerits and
different types of errors.Chapter-2 Final Accounts: The second
module discusses about preparation of final accounts such as
income statement and balance sheet. Preparation of income
statement and balance sheet is explained in both horizontal
and vertical format. It also describes other important aspects
related to final accounts such as classification of expenses,
classification of assets and liabilities, provisions and reserves,
adjustment entries and marshalling of balance sheet. It also
discusses about window dressing.Chapter-3 Analysis of
Financial Statements: The third module discusses about
analysis of financial statements using various ratios such as
profitability ratios, liquidity ratios, solvency ratios, market
strength analysis ratios, turnover ratios and du-pont analysis
with their uses. It also explains about comparative, common
size statement and trend analysis and also cash flow
statement. Chapter-4 Management Accounting: The fourth
module discusses about various marginal costing techniques
such as break-even-point, P/V ratio, contribution margin etc.
and its uses. Chapter-5 Functional &Flexible budgeting:
The fifth module discusses about various functional budgets
such as purchase budget, production budget and flexible
budget and also discusses about standard costing and
variance analysis. Chapter-6 Emerging Issues of Accounting:
The sixth module discusses about various emerging issues
related to financial accounting such as HRA, forensic
accounting and various kinds of reporting such as
environmental reporting, sustainability reporting, segmental
reporting, interim financial reporting, Triple bottom line
reporting and integrated reporting. It also covers accounting
standards, IFRS, IFRS converged Indian accounting
standards, value added statement and Economic Value
Addition.The book has grown out of lecture notes and other
materials prepared and updated for the MBA degree of various
universities for the last few years. Hence, the book is sure to
help the students of MBA of VTU particularly 2020 syllabus.
