The Compassionate
Road to Recovery
ubstance or drug abuse is a more complicated affair
Sthan most individuals would comprehend it to be.
There are several reasons behind why a person starts
using drugs, be it illegal drugs, alcohol, or misuse of
prescription medication.
The spectrum of reasons for substance abuse is as broad as
the sort of people who resort to it. Anyone could be at the
risk of drug addiction, irrespective of the different factors
that contribute to the existence of an individual.
Although the popular belief is that drug addiction mainly
falls under the category of mental illness, homelessness, or
even poor family background, people might start using
drugs because of various physical, emotional, social, and
psychological reasons. Even within these categories, myriad
factors can push someone over the edge of substance abuse
disorder or addiction.
“What is addiction, really? It is a sign, a signal, a symptom
of distress. It is a language that tells us about a plight that
must be understood.” – Alice Miller
As quoted by Alice Miller, a Polish-Swiss psychologist,
psychoanalyst, and philosopher in one of her acclaimed
writings, ‘Breaking Down the Wall of Silence: The
Liberating Experience of Facing Painful Truth,’ the true
meaning of substance addiction is a plight for help that
must be heard.
To genuinely help someone recover from their state of
addiction, one should understand this fact on a deeper
emotional level. Even if a person is willing to quit their
habit of drug abuse, it is an extremely tough task to do on
their own.
The prolonged use of substances has severe effects on the
structure and function of the human brain, and this makes it
difficult for an individual to recuperate from addiction on
their own.
Other than an unwavering will to bounce back from
addiction, one needs strong support from their family, peer
group, and an environment that facilitates their recovery.
The initial process of healing is often tricky to commence at
home because of the intense withdrawal symptoms. It is
crucial that the person in concern moves to a facility with
professionals who understand how to manage these
effectively with appropriate treatment and empathy.
This is where rehabilitation centers come into the picture.
They help the addicted person by creating a customized
care plan, detoxing the body from addictive substances,
building the foundation of long-term treatment efforts, and
even assisting in aftercare. Rehabilitation centers play a
pivotal part in the overall recovery of an individual through
deep understanding and learning about the healing process
of such chronic illnesses.
To acknowledge the noble services that these organizations
provide, we came up with this edition of Insights Care – 10

10 Most Promising Rehabilita on Centers to Watch in 2021
“Each of us has a unique part to play in the healing of the
world.” – Marianne Williamson
In the journey of our life, we stumble and fall – some
things are inevitable that way. But what matters more
is how we heal ourselves. Healing requires courage,
compassion, commitment, and patience. But above all,
healing demands assistance.
Undoubtedly, everyone wants to lead a better life.
Sometimes, physical injuries, mental health, or addiction
issues get in the way of that goal. We are then compelled to
seek the best possible solution to attain that goal. For
problems that require expert and focused care, rehabilitation
is generally the answer.
This edition, 10 Most Promising Rehabilitation Centers to
Watch in 2021, spotlights those rehabilitation centers that
provide patients with comprehensive and quality care. And
one prominent name among such rehab centers is
J. Flowers Health Institute.
Based in Houston, Texas, J. Flowers Health Institute
specializes in providing truly comprehensive health and
wellness evaluations for individuals who want to improve
their quality of life. The Institute stands out from the crowd
because of the high standard it maintains in effective client

Dr. James S. Flowers, Ph.D., LPC-S, Founder
“
Dr. James Flowers has been one of the most respected
names in the chronic pain, pain recovery, and addiction
treatment industries for over 30 years. Dr. Flowers holds a
broad educational background alongside a wide range of

with addiction.
Dr. Flowers is dedicated to progressive healthcare and
human healing. He always demonstrates his commitment to
creating positive changes in the lives of every client he

post-evaluation treatment recommendations. He founded J.
Flowers Health Institute to help fill this void.

As experts from their own professional journey, Dr. Flowers
and Robbin share a piece of advice saying, “It is vital to
have faith in yourself and recognize the moment to take a
chance to get the help you need. Through personal
commitment and professional direction, you can achieve
both a fulfilled and well-balanced life.”
“
Overcoming Adversities
We asked Dr. Flowers for his opinion on the impact of the
current pandemic on the global healthcare sector, and what
challenges the Institute faced during the initial phase of the
pandemic, to which he replied, “We recognize the
increasing number of people struggling with mental health
issues and substance use disorder over the pandemic.
COVID-19, the accompanying social restrictions, and its
impact on people’s careers force a difficult lifestyle change.
It is not easy for anyone to adjust to this significant
alteration.”
“In these uncertain times, however, we always recommend
that people recognize how each one of us is facing this
change in life. It is important to adjust to the change to
“
strive for a healthy and peaceful lifestyle. In instances
where families have been isolated together, it is critical to
establish healthy boundaries and keep up with open
communication,” he added.
Opinions that Matter
Sharing his take on the future of the rehabilitation services
niche post-pandemic, Dr. Flowers says, “Telehealth usage
rates have skyrocketed due to COVID-19, and research has
steadily proven the effectiveness of telepsychology.
Georgetown University focused a study on telehealth’s
growth in the past two decades, and this research showed
that telehealth patients and providers felt positive about this
incorporation of technology into healthcare.”
“Additionally, Harvard Medical School and RAND
Corporation have studied the influence of behavioral health
issues and chronic conditions on the telehealth industry
during the pandemic. Their research showed that these areas
of healthcare greatly increased telehealth utilization during
the COVID-19 pandemic. We have witnessed a steadily
growing number of patients who suffer from severe anxiety
due to the pandemic. Through telehealth and on-demand,
app-based mental health coaching, we help these clients
face and improve their anxiety disorders.”
“Recently, there has been growing number of visits to US
emergency departments (ED). These visits point to an
increasing concern over mental health issues, overdoses,
and violence. The CDC states that strategies which support
“
We identify the root of a
client’s problem and
approach their healing
from every angle.
telehealth and addiction treatment may be useful in
reducing the number of ED visits for these issues.”
“
Dr. Flowers believes that the telehealth sector will continue
to grow as people normalize it as a form of treatment, and
over time, telehealth will continue to be effective for the
many health and mental issues people face throughout life.
The Future is Bright
When asked about how they envision scaling J. Flowers
Health Institute’s operations in 2021, Dr. Flowers and
Robbin stated, “To grow our organization, we are steadily
researching and analyzing various cities throughout both
the US and abroad. We aim to reach a broader space while
also partnering with the best and most advanced medical
systems in the world.”

Your Companion on a Journey Towards Wholesome Healing
Recovering from any illness is often not a linear
road, especially when it comes to mental illnesses.
To go even further and specify it, bouncing back
from addiction is not an easy task. Substance abuse is
something that people turn to when they are unable to cope
with their internal struggles.
Each individual struggles differently in their life, and every
person has a different pace and ways that work for them to
recover. And to understand this, a mental health
professional needs deep knowledge and qualification to
help the patient and a compassionate attitude to do their job
well.
Maryland Addiction Recovery Center is an organization
that has deeply understood the concept of recovery from
addiction. It helps individuals address their issues and lead
a life that is free from addiction and is also fulfilling.
Sam Bierman, the Co-founder and Executive Director,
and Zach Snitzer, the Co-Founder and Corporate
Director of Marketing, are at the helm of MARC’s
operations.
The Origin
Sam Bierman
Execu ve Director
Maryland Addiction Recovery Center is a long-term
community reintegration extended care treatment model for
individuals suffering from substance use disorder, addiction,
and co-occurring disorders. It views addiction as a chronic
illness and, as such, believes that the best recovery
outcomes are supported by a long-term treatment
continuum that includes clinical services, recovery support,
monitoring and accountability, and engagement in a
personal program of health, healing, and recovery.
16|August 2021|www.insightscare.com
The three pillars MARC has been built upon consist of 1)
treating addiction as a chronic illness through long-term
treatment and care; 2) family engagement and involvement
throughout the treatment experience; and 3) inter-agency
collaboration between MARC and other service providers,
which can include other addiction treatment or mental
health treatment providers and recovery service providers,
but also healthcare systems and care providers, community
organizations, businesses, employers, and EAPs, and
generally speaking anyone that is involved in the patient’s
life and can help support them in recovery.
The recovery center’s overall purpose is not only to help a
patient find sobriety but rather healing and quality of life.
“In order to overcome addiction, patients do not need to
learn abstinence from substances, but rather how to identify,
address, and overcome underlying causes and conditions of
addiction, learn healthy coping mechanisms and necessary
life skills development, and create a life of purpose,
meaning, and direction,” the co-founders expressed.
MARC is family-owned and operated. It opened in late
2013 as an intensive outpatient (IOP) treatment program,
over time growing into the current service structure of a 50-
bed long-term comprehensive extended care program, with
IOP programs to serve the local community.
Caring Patients into Recovery
MARC offers a unique long-term community reintegration
care model, where patients stay with the center often for an
average of nine months to a year, slowly step down through
a continuum of clinical services, learn to manage and/or
overcome issues, develop life skills, and create purpose and
direction. This is done through the support of a dynamic
clinical and medical staff of psychiatrists, nurses, doctorate
and master’s level therapists and counselors, and ongoing
recovery support.
The center does not adhere to one evidence-based practice
in how it approaches its patients, but rather through a
combination of many evidence-based clinical approaches
and tailor’s a treatment program personally designed for the
needs of each patient.
MARC also offers a robust vocational program that
supports patients whether they are returning to an
established career or instead need the basic tools to achieve
first-time employment. For patients in need of academic
support, the center offers a College Success program to
appropriately integrate or reintegrate a patient into the life
of a student, whether they need a GED, to reengage in a
community college or university, or are seeking further
schooling such as a master’s degree.

Expertise that Redefines Compassionate Care
Sam Bierman was born and raised in Long Island. He
graduated from Indiana University with a bachelor’s degree
in Business Management. After finding his own recovery
from addiction after relocating to Florida, Sam began
working in the addiction treatment field and went back to
school to become a clinician.
Overtime, he worked at Caron Renaissance in Florida,
holding positions as a Counselor Assistant, Medical Office
Coordinator, and Director of Operations for Caron Ocean
Drive, a treatment program focusing on executive and
affluent clientele.
Sam moved to Maryland to co-found Maryland Addiction
Recovery Center with Zach in order to create a communitybased
long-term treatment program for those suffering from
addiction and co-occurring disorders.
Sam also is a 40 Under 40 honoree of the Baltimore
Business Journal in 2019 and serves on the board of nonprofit
organizations Shalom Tikvah, a mental health
organization for Baltimore’s Jewish population, and The
Phoenix Foundation, an organization that operates
Maryland’s first recovery high school.
17|August 2021|www.insightscare.com
been a terrible impact upon healthcare from COVID-19.
The isolation, disconnection, financial insecurity, and fear
brought on by COVID-19 have created an epidemic of
addiction and mental health within the pandemic. Rates of
mental health crises, substance misuse, rising sales of
alcohol, overdoses (both fatal and non-fatal), and thoughts
of suicide have overwhelmed the healthcare system.”
He further adds, “Over the last 12 months, the rates of
treatment of liver disease due to alcohol has increased
rapidly. Over 93,000 Americans lost their lives to fatal
overdoses. Hospital Emergency Rooms and Emergency
Departments, often ill-equipped to deal with patients who
have substance use disorder or mental health conditions, are
being overrun with patients in need.”
Zach Snitzer was born and raised in Owings Mills,
Maryland. A graduate of the University of Maryland,
College Park, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in
communications and marketing, Zach found his way into
healthcare after overcoming his own decade-long journey
of addiction.
With a background in marketing, public relations,
communications, and business development, Zach
previously worked at a public relations firm, an events and
marketing company focusing on regional amateur sports,
and a media company producing marketing and educational
content.
Being from Maryland, he recognized the value of long-term
treatment and how it best treatment models. Friends with
Sam in the Florida recovery community, he identified the
Maryland-DC-Virginia area (where he grew up) as a perfect
fit for this treatment model. Moving up to Maryland, Zach
spent two years in the planning stages for MARC before
Sam joined in. At which point, Zach and Sam opened
MARC in late 2013.
Zach also sits on the board of the National Conference for
Addiction Disorders (NCAD), the local non-profit treatment
center Valley-Bridge House, and the DMV-PLA, a
professional liaison’s association for individuals working in
behavioral health in the Maryland-DC-Virginia area.
Winning-over Adversities
Sharing his opinion on the impact of the current pandemic
on the global healthcare sector, Sam shared, “There has
Talking about the challenges that MARC faced during the
initial phase of the pandemic, Zach expressed, “The greatest
challenge for MARC in the initial phase of the pandemic
was with the unknown. As information and CDC
recommendations were changing by what seemed like
minute-by-minute, it was difficult to pivot in changing
protocols. The number one priority was keeping patients
and staff safe while still being able to deliver high-quality
treatment services.”
Additionally, he said, “Another challenge was the sourcing
of PPE. What we found was collaborative efforts between
providers and organizations were vital. We were having
weekly and sometimes daily calls with the leadership of
other treatment centers, health systems, and government
health departments.”
“Working together to figure out how to best source PPE, get
tests and results, be flexible with programming, integrate
virtual services, and create health and safety protocols that
could sustain through uncertain times,” Zach concluded.
Opinions that Matter
Elaborating on his opinion about the future of the
rehabilitation services niche, post the pandemic, Sam
added, “Virtual services are certainly going to be a big part
of behavioral healthcare moving forward. The ability to
have people access services that they would normally be
unable to access based on location and convenience. The
important part to understand is how we as a field effectively
integrate virtual health platforms and other technology with
the vital piece of in-person services.”
“There is an important connection that occurs in-person
18|August 2021|www.insightscare.com
when treating someone with addiction or mental health
issues, so we cannot lose that vital person-to-person
connection, but we also need to work towards allowing
greater access to services because there is a great need
being unmet and individuals unable to get life-saving and
life-enriching services.”
He further said, “Additionally, outcome-driven treatment is
going to start guiding the field. For years it has been
difficult to obtain accurate data on success rates or patient
outcomes. As addiction treatment is such a niche within
healthcare, there is often not enough bandwidth in
organizations to acquire this important data and then use it
to create better, more effective treatment or to tailor
treatment to the individual. This is changing, and hopefully,
in the future, the addiction treatment field will be more
aligned with the rest of healthcare in using data-driven
treatment approaches.”
Words of Wisdom
Advising budding entrepreneurs and enthusiasts aspiring to
venture into the rehabilitation services sector, Zach said,
“First, this is not a field to enter in lightly. It would be
essential to get an education and important experience
working at a good, ethical addiction treatment provider.
Learn the field. Learn the good and the bad, and then
understand that you need to be driven by a set of principles
that put patient care first, above all else.”
“Second, find a mentor, or a group of mentors, within the
field outside of your own organization or company.
Someone or a group of people who also demonstrate the
principles you aspire to follow and lean on that guidance.
Finally, make sure that you are filling a need. There is a
host of different treatment providers and services opening,
but rarely does it seem like it is being done to fill a need and
help a group of people incapable of finding those services.”
Sharing his vision on scaling the center’s operations in
2021, Sam added, “Scalability in behavioral healthcare and
addiction treatment is tricky. What people don’t quite
understand is that the direct patient care and those clinicians
and practitioner’s ability to appropriately adapt evidencebased
practices to each individual patient’s needs is not
something that is easily scalable.”
“For example, you can’t simply find a location, hire some
clinicians and administrative staff, and open a program.
Well, you can, but what type of quality program will that
look like? Addiction treatment programs need to operate
from a specific clinical philosophy, and then through
different therapeutic approaches, evidence-based practices,
and patient-centered care, deliver services that will be able
to help each patient that they serve as best as they can. So,
for us at MARC, we’ve seen significant growth over the last
several years by using those guiding principles.”
Explaining further, he said, “We grew from a small
intensive outpatient with six employees to a 50-bed
extended care model with over 50 employees. We’ve scaled
through a partnership with Caron Treatment Centers in
Pennsylvania with the combined ownership of Encore
Outpatient Services in Arlington, Virginia, which is an
outpatient PHP and IOP program. So rather than simply
looking to open more programs, our growth is strategic.”
“We plan on improving our internal clinical, medical, and
psychiatric services and expand on our specific programs
like our Vocational Program or our College Success
program (which is another partnership with Caron.) In
terms of growth, we actively look in other areas where we
might fill a need, and partnerships with like-minded,
quality, and ethical organizations where we might be able to
open or expand additional access to care,” Sam concluded.
“One of the greatest principles we strive towards is that any
decision we make, whether it is expanding within our
clinical program, adding services, or overall growth, is
driven by the question ‘Are we filling a need?’” he added.

INVOLVEMENT in
Addiction
REHABILITATION
As with any health problem, a family plays an
important role in the rehabilitation of an
individual addicted to substance abuse. The
importance of familial involvement in addiction
recovery cannot just be overstated. The love and
support from family members in addiction treatment
can significantly improve the chances of an addicted
person getting successfully treated and can also prevent
relapses.
It is an obvious fact that the ill health of any member of
the family affects every other family member, and the
same is true when someone suffers from substance
addiction. In such cases, it is important that the family
deals with the problem in the right manner that will
support the recovery of the person. The following
extract explores how familial involvement facilitates
addiction recovery –
20|August 2021|www.insightscare.com
21|August 2021|www.insightscare.com
All For One
1. Improve and strengthen family bonds – One of the
worst side effects of addiction is isolation. An individual
battling with addiction often pushes family and friends
away in favor of using alcohol and drugs. They miss
important family events and become distant from
everyone in the family unit. This leads to weakened
family bonds.
The way to improve this situation is by being involved
in your loved one’s recovery from the substance abuse
disorder. Participating in family therapy helps in facing
and discussing important family issues. Joining family
therapy can also help improve communication within the
family unit, improve family relationships and dynamics,
address dysfunctional interactions, and improve the
family’s problem-solving skills.
2. Control enabling behaviors – Addiction often causes
the adoption of enabling or toxic behaviors within the
family. These behaviors can be intentional or
unintentional or just coping mechanisms for the family
members. But this phenomenon only worsens the
addicted person’s situation.
Turning a blind eye to this problem enables the selfdestructive
behavioral patterns of your loved one. To
help stop enabling your loved one, you can take the
assistance of a family therapist. A family therapist will
help you identify these enabling patterns of behavior and
also provide you tips on how to support your family
member instead.
3. Understanding triggers – Almost everyone battling
with addiction have some kind of triggers that pushes
them to substance abuse. You might not realize these
triggers, but certain places, people, thoughts, feelings,
emotions, and circumstances trigger your loved one’s
addiction.
Getting involved in family therapy and participating in
peer support meetings will help you understand these
triggers. Having a precise understanding of your loved
one’s triggers will help them recover and avoid any
chances of relapse.
4. Providing unconditional love and support – Getting
detoxicated from addictive substances, attending
counseling and treatment sessions can be a lonely
experience for a person. The involvement of the family
in this process will make the concerned person feel
loved and cherished, and this will ensure their speedy
recovery. Furthermore, attending group counseling
sessions will help you see the progress that the other
addicts have made and help you keep a positive mindset
about the recovery of your loved one. The period of
recovery from substance addiction is the most crucial
time when your loved one will need your unconditional
love, support, and care. Being there for them in this
pivotal time will help them recover faster and avoid
relapses in the future.
5. Learning how to effectively establish healthy
boundaries – Getting involved in the recovery process
of your loved one will help you understand how to
effectively establish healthy boundaries at home that will
facilitate their rehabilitation. The strongest period of
relapse is within the first 90 days of treatment, so all the
family members have to stay aware of any signs of
relapse that they might notice in the person and
effectively put boundaries in place to avoid them.
Conversing with recovery experts, attending group
counseling sessions, and understanding your loved one’s
triggers will help you establish healthy, effective
boundaries.
Some common examples of boundaries include –
• No alcohol or drugs at home.
• No more connection with party friends.
• No financial assistance will encourage your loved one
to find a job and manage their own money.
Conclusion
The one thing that everyone needs to understand about
addiction recovery is that it’s not a one-size-fits-all process.
Everyone’s triggers, enabling behaviors, and circumstances
are different, and so are their pace and process of
rehabilitation.
The family involved in addiction recovery needs to remain
patient while their loved one battles this tough battle.
Unconditional love, support, care, and a family’s
involvement in the addiction recovery process will help the
person come out of addiction successfully and also make
healthy changes in lifestyle that will keep them steady on
the path of recovery.

10 Most Promising Rehabilita on Centers to Watch in 2021
Where Healing Meets Expert Care and Comfort
In today’s fast-paced world, where everything has
become so all-consuming and complex, most people
struggle with mental and emotional turmoil.
Addictions are becoming more common than before as
people turn to substances as a way out of all their problems.
This scenario was amplified by the COVID-19 pandemic
that struck the whole world and locked people inside their
homes. People who were already battling with mental
illnesses and substance addiction became more vulnerable
to further indulgence.
Sometimes recovery from addiction and other mental
illnesses is a battle that cannot be fought alone and in your
existing habitat. That’s where rehabilitation centres play a
crucial role. They allow an individual who’s battling
addiction or mental illnesses to recover in seclusion and
peace.
THE BALANCE Luxury Rehab is a place where people
can find this seclusion and peace away from their habitat to
heal holistically.
In the following interview, Abdullah Boulard, the CEO
and Dr med. Sarah Boss, the Clinical Director, tell us
how THE BALANCE Luxury Rehab has been enabling
clients to recover from addiction through their services and
helping them lead a life free of addiction.

Overcoming the Obstacles
While conversing with Abdullah, we asked him about his
opinion on the global healthcare sector, to which he replied,
THE BALANCE
combines the luxury and
comfort of a private
villa with the world-class
medical therapy of a
Swiss rehab clinic.
“The pandemic has been an accelerator of many mental
problems. We can see an increase in patients where the
pandemic has influenced their situation significantly. A lot
comes from loneliness.”
“The healthcare sector will think differently in the future.
Supply chains need to be reviewed, and they will have
higher importance. Independence will most probably
increase on a regional level,” concluded Abdullah.
We further asked him about the challenges that the
organisation faced during the initial phase of the pandemic,
to which he replied, “Our major challenge was mainly
through the lock-downs and travel restrictions of our
patients. Clients couldn’t travel to get the needed help or
only with a lot of effort and administration to be done.”
Advice for the Youth
• Individuality before services for the mass
• Business insights and connections are needed to be
successful
Road Ahead
We asked Abdullah about his vision on scaling the
company, to which he replied, “We have just opened a new
facility in Mallorca/Spain and will continue to establish
that.”
Upon asking further about the change in the niche of the
rehabilitation services in the future he said, “Those who can
afford will seek private and bespoke treatment programs.
On the other hand, online services will increase too.”
concluded Abdullah.

Non-Invasive
Technology Enables Early Diagnosis,
Intervention, and Monitoring for Patients
with Liver Disease
- Dominique Legros, CEO, Echosens, and Jon Gingrich, CEO,
Echosens North America, CPR
Liver disease has become a growing epidemic
around the world, raising alarms among providers.
According to one study, the annual direct medical
costs associated with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease
(NAFLD) were estimated to be $103 billion in the United
States and €89 billion in Europe.
Liver disease accounts for approximately 2 million deaths
per year worldwide, 1 million from complications due to
cirrhosis and 1 million from viral hepatitis and
hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Cirrhosis and liver cancer
combined account for 3.5% of all deaths worldwide.
Tied to this epidemic, approximately 2 billion adults are
overweight or obese, with a body mass index (BMI) greater
than or equal to 30, and over 400 million have
diabetes—both of which are risk factors for NAFLD and
hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).
From 1990 to 2017, the number of prevalent cases more
than doubled for compensated cirrhosis due to the more
severe form of NAFLD called non-alcoholic steatohepatitis
(NASH), and more than tripled for decompensated cirrhosis
due to NASH. NASH is a challenging, high-volume, and
chronic condition that lacks a standardized approach to care
and has imposed a substantial health burden on many
countries.
While liver disease statistics are staggering, they underscore
an important opportunity to raise public awareness about
the liver disease epidemic so that more people understand
that most liver disease is preventable and, in many cases,
reversible with the right lifestyle changes.
A growing number of healthcare providers recognize the
positive impact of chronic care disease management
(CCDM) programs that integrate non-invasive tests (NITs)
in the diagnosis and for optimizing ongoing management of
patients with chronic liver disease in a way that can
effectively halt its progression.
Critical Risk Factors
Obesity
Obesity is not simply a matter of over-eating, but rather a
complex disease that involves an excessive amount of body
fat. It’s important to think of this disease as a complex
medical issue that increases the risk of heart disease,
diabetes, high blood pressure and certain cancers.
Obesity can be devastating on vital organs, especially on
the liver, causing insulin resistance that leads to buildup of
blood sugar and increases the amount of free fatty acids
circulating in the blood and inside the liver cells.
Obesity increases the risk of NAFLD. The Unites States has
the most obese adults (109,342,839), followed by China
(97,256,700), while Indonesia has the fewest obese adults.
Most of the world’s population live in countries where more
people die from being overweight or obese than being
underweight. If these trends continue, more children and
adolescents will be obese than moderately or severely
underweight by 2022.

29|August 2021|www.insightscare.com
Type 2 Diabetes
Type 2 diabetes is also an important risk factor for NAFLD
and NASH. While Type 2 diabetes is tied to obesity, its
relevance in NAFLD is two-fold. First, the presence of
NAFLD increases the incidence of Type 2 diabetes and,
second, diabetes aggravates NAFLD to more severe forms
of steatohepatitis, cirrhosis, and HCC. In fact, the
prevalence of NAFLD and NASH in patients with Type 2
diabetes is more than 60%.
Approximately 463 million adults worldwide live with
diabetes and by 2045 that number will rise to 700million.
Fat in the liver can increase the risks of progression of
prediabetes to overt disease. Once a patient has fatty liver
disease, diabetes may become more difficult to control,
making it critical to obtain an early diagnosis and introduce
lifestyle changes to halt or reverse NAFLD.
Holistic Approach Combined with NITs
Because NAFLD and NASH are so tightly intertwined with
obesity, diabetes and lifestyle, a holistic approach to patient
engagement can help support behavioral changes that will
lead to better outcomes across the co-morbid conditions
affecting the individual patient. Recent studies show that
noninvasive exams at the point of care can cost-effectively
identify individuals at risk for liver disease
Chronic Care Disease Management
A CCDM program should be designed to target liver health
to not only address the broader needs of individuals, but
also prevent NASH. In recent years, the fibrosis stage of
liver disease has been identified as the most important
predictor of liver outcomes, making it critical to identify
patients with NAFLD and NASH.
A follow-up visit ensures that the patient is following the
weight loss program, consulting with a dietician or
nutritionist and adhering to the CCDM program. It’s also
helpful to share the patient’s liver exam score with them to
illustrate the change in liver fat and potential need for
adjusting treatment. This is where noninvasive tests play a
key role.
The Value of Noninvasive Liver Exams
for identifying fibrotic NASH tend to be complicated,
expensive, and potentially wasteful.
A recent expert review suggests a streamlined approach that
is cost-effective. Researchers identified vibration controlled
transient elastography (VCTE) as a useful direct biomarker
of liver stiffness and fat in point of care. A CCDM program
helps educate plan members about maintaining liver health,
mitigates the high costs of prescriptions and aids preventive
measures.
Furthermore, a VCTE tool delivers value by quickly
providing a quantitative assessment of liver stiffness and
liver fat at the point of care, making the detection of liver
disease and long-term care for individuals with NAFLD and
NASH more effective.
These non-invasive tools provide a simple, validated, and
reliable exam in less than 10 minutes. It does this by early
identification of patients with liver disease for proactive
intervention and behavior change to slow disease
progression. For those identified with liver fibrosis, this
exam can also reduce the aggregate volume of some current
diagnosis methods, such as liver biopsy.
The most effective non-invasive VCTE exams are highly
mobile, can be operated by a medical assistant and
interpreted by the healthcare professional. They produce
numeric measurements, rather than images, for simplified
interpretation and consistency of measurement. This allows
clinicians to monitor changes in liver tissue over time.
What’s more, VCTE tools combine standardization, clinical
performance, and accessibility for early patient
identification either in a diabetology clinic, liver clinic or
primary care setting. They are used for advanced liver
disease patient management and portal hypertension risk
stratification.
The high prevalence rate of liver disease in overweight and
obese adults calls for attention and dedicated action from
liver specialists, health policy makers, the general public
and primary care physicians alike to help reverse these twin
epidemics and reduce costs associated with liver disease
and obesity. Fortunately, the technology exists to help
reverse this global trend.
A growing number of primary care physicians and
specialists are seeking cost-effective ways to detect and
monitor liver disease, being mindful that current approaches

The evolution of the human
species is quite astonishing.
There were the days when
humans used to make tools from stones.
Time flew, and now humans use tools to
cut those very stones. Humanity has
advanced to the whole next level in the
journey from living in the caves to
building a space station. We are the focal
point of progress, aren’t we?
Mother nature has gifted the most
precious quality to humans -
Intelligence. Since the day we came
into existence, we have been inventing
new things. Artificial intelligence (AI)
and machine learning (ML) are the top
picks from this list. The ever-growing
utilization of AI in various fields
knows no bounds. This technology is
playing a crucial role in the healthcare
field too.
AI replaced humans in a wide range of
medical tasks. In specific procedures,
such as diagnosing diseases, AI
performs better than humans. But for
many, AI is still unclear. This article
will explore the importance of AI and
ML in the healthcare system.
What is Artificial Intelligence in
Healthcare?
Artificial Intelligence in healthcare
includes machine learning algorithms
for the analysis, comprehension, and
presentation of complex medical data.
The technology gathers all the input
data and processes it to give the
desired output. It automates the overall
working structure, saving the time and
efforts of humans.
Different Aspects of AI in Healthcare
• Machine Learning: Many people
think that AI and ML are different
terms, while some people consider
them synonymous terms. Both are
not true. Do you remember the
Venn diagram - circle in the
circle? That’s the correlation
between both these terms.
Machine learning is the branch of
AI. ML is the study of computer
algorithms that automatically use
data and improve results.
• Data Mining: Data mining
incorporates data and analytics for
the best practices in the medical
sector. In other words, data mining
is a subfield of computer science
that extracts patterns from large
data sets. Data mining applications
in healthcare are limited because it
is a new trend in the medical
world.
• Deep Learning: People always
tend to confuse in-between
machine learning and deep
learning. Deep learning is actually
a part of machine learning. Revise
the Venn diagram again (circle in
the circle). Deep learning analyzes
the data at greater speeds without
compromising the accuracy.
• Artificial Neural Networks:
Artificial Neural Networks
(ANNs) are computing systems
based on the animal brain-like
structure. ANN is a network of
simple processors or units called
neurons. It adheres to the
functions of the human brain to
perform the work as a human
does.
Advancement in Healthcare Sector
with Adoption of AI and ML
The evolution in computer science has
assisted researchers in developing new
technologies. It also assists Medicos in
a better understanding of diagnosing
and decision making. Healthcare is a
field that is highly suitable for the
implementation of AI and ML tools.
Let’s go through some of the key
applications of these tools.
• The COVID-19 pandemic
underlined the importance of
telehealth for society. Doctors can
guide the patients remotely with
virtual conversations on
smartphones. It eliminates direct
physical contact and is a costeffective
practice.
• Diagnosing diseases like cancer,
brain tumors is possible because of
the implementation of machine
learning. The process has become
speedy and more accurate, which
helps to detect the seriousness of
the disease.
• CT scan and ultrasonic
sonography are commonly used
technologies for a clear view of
internal body structure. They form
a series of images detecting the
exact defects in the internal parts
of the human body.
• Machine learning helps diagnose
diabetes too. Early diagnosing
diabetes can save many lives.
• ML can record the algorithmic
data of patients for personalized
treatment in the future. New data
sets can help medical practitioners
to lower the mortality rate.
• Robotic surgeries are more precise
and can be carried out with
minimal harm to the human body.
• LASER technology has already
occupied almost all the aspects of
the medical sector and proving to
be the most essential technique in
the field.
Into the Future
Humans are the ever-learning
creatures, aren’t they? We are living in
the digital era where technology is
inching towards new heights every day.
However, there are certain limitations
that restrict this progress. To break
these barriers, technology can play a
pivotal role. AI and ML automate
complex tasks that are beyond human
capabilities. The application of
machine learning in all the medical
sectors will gather the entire data. It
will create a centralized global
platform for doctors. In other words,
artificial intelligence will be the base
for ‘medical intelligence.’

10 Most Promising Rehabilitation Centers to Watch in 2021
Keep Away from the Doctor?
COVID-19 and the Sea Change in Healthcare
- By Stuart Long, CEO, InfoBionic
The COVID-19 pandemic represents one of the
largest fundamental changes to America’s medical
industry in the past one hundred years. As the highly
infectious virus spread like wildfire, governmental
organizations like the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention issued unprecedented social distancing
recommendations to help curb case numbers and keep the
public safe while lessening the burden on the nation’s
healthcare system.
Telehealth and virtual care emerged as crucial
augmentations to the healthcare matrix. Before COVID-19,
telehealth wasn’t widely used as an effective patient care
option. But technological advances—coupled with the
public’s perception of the virus’s
contagiousness—massively accelerated the use of remote
patient monitoring (RPM) as a standard part of most patient
care.
Before the pandemic, an estimated nine out of 10 healthcare
providers were already considering remote patient
monitoring technologies as a supplement to traditional
(1)
healthcare services. By April 2020, the use of telehealth
technologies for outpatient care and office visits had
increased 78-fold. Now, it’s estimated that up to $250
billion in US healthcare spending could be shifted to virtual
(2)
or virtually-enabled care.
Advanced in Medical Technology Driving Virtual Care
Before COVID-19, RPM technologies were only accessible
through a healthcare provider. The field of cardiology was
one of the first to adopt the use of RPM tech, specifically
(3)
with the introduction of connected cardiac implants. Over
the years, technological advances allowed major global
corporations to develop products like smart watches and
fitness trackers, which could provide information about
select aspects of health, such as heart rate, in real-time.
In the beginning of 2020, it was estimated that one-in-five
(4)
Americans used a smart watch or fitness tracker. And
while these products do provide vital information about
some aspects of health, they aren’t a substitute for medicalgrade
RPM devices specifically designed to aid in the
diagnosis and monitoring of many medical conditions.
In cardiology, ECG is commonly used as a diagnostic tool,
providing telemetry data that is analyzed by trained
clinicians and can be useful for detecting a number of
cardiac problems, including arrhythmias like Afib. Now,
specifically built diagnostic RPM technology like
®
InfoBionic’s MoMe Kardia provide more timely, more
accurate data, which can then be verified by cardiologists
and used to help ensure a more accurate diagnosis of any
cardiac conditions.
Beyond diagnostic capabilities, RPM technologies offer
numerous benefits to providers, including:
Ÿ
Ÿ
Ÿ
Ÿ
Ÿ
The ability to collect more than one type of data using a
single device
Easier access to patient data
Improvement in the management of many chronic
conditions
Lower cost
Increased practice efficiency
Healthcare consumers also benefit from RPM tech. Many
realize the advantages to using such technologies,
including:
Ÿ
Ÿ
Ÿ
Ÿ
Ÿ
Continuous monitoring of various health problems
Improved clinical outcomes
Instant transfer of information to clinicians
Lower healthcare costs
Reduced risk of complications and hospitalization
And there are financial benefits too. Some studies estimate
that using RPM saves as much as $1,500 per patient visit
(5)
with a provider. It’s also generally much cheaper to use
telehealth and RPM rather than seeing a doctor in-person;
the median national cost for telehealth virtual visits is about
$50, while in-office visits typically range between $85 and
(6)
$740 depending on the level of care provided.
Virtual Care and “Hospitals Without Walls”
The Hospital Without Walls initiative was designed by the
Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services to empower
hospitals and other healthcare entities to provide services
beyond the brick-and-mortar walls of existing facilities.
Remote patient monitoring tech is essential for this
initiative’s success. Already, healthcare providers see
between 50 and 175 times the number of patients using
(7)
telehealth platforms. The Initiative has already taken root
in 29 states and is expected to continue to expand across the
nation.

Before COVID-19, RPM tech was generally only used in
rural or remote locations, where healthcare providers were
in short supply. At first, patients needed to travel to a
specific medical facility or office to receive telehealth
services—now, RPM allows for the provision of certain
healthcare services within the patient’s own home. And the
government is catching up to this new model of care by
reducing or waiving Medicare costs for telehealth visits
instead of requiring the collection of deductibles or coinsurance
payments.
Many believe that healthcare will evolve into a new hybrid
model of care, where RPMs supplement physician
consultations and traditional physical exams with virtual,
noninvasive continuous monitoring. Beyond protecting
individuals from infectious diseases like COVID-19, it’s
thought that this new healthcare model will help consumers
accept more responsibility for their own health and give
them more autonomy and choice regarding important
healthcare decisions.
According to some estimates, remote patient monitoring is
expected to become as prevalent as in-patient monitoring
(8)
within the next five years. As such, the international
telehealth market is estimated to hit $559.52 billion by
(9)
2027.
The Future of Diagnostic RPM
Beyond cardiology, it’s thought that RPM may help in the
management of other chronic conditions, such as obesity
and diabetes. However, there are still significant challenges
the healthcare system must overcome in order for RPM to
succeed in the long run.
There are still important variations in legal and regulatory
guidelines, rules, and regulations. And due to a lack of
multistate telehealth licensures, physicians may not be able
to provide medical services spanning a wider range of
geographic locations.
The successful adoption of RPM also depends on Internet
bandwidth and security. These two factors may affect data
transmission, and some patients may turn away from
remote patient monitoring, citing privacy and security
concerns.
And we can’t overlook one of the most important facts
about RPM—while these technologies are extremely useful,
at this point, they cannot entirely replace face-to-face
contact and examination by healthcare providers. Remote
patient monitoring devices don’t provide enough
information for physicians to comfortably complete
comprehensive physical examinations.
There is no one RPM device that collects detailed
information beyond measuring blood pressure, temperature,
oxygen levels, heart rate, heart rhythm, and blood glucose
levels. As such, in-office visits will, to some extent, remain
necessary for the complete evaluation of an individual’s
health.
With the widespread adoption of these technologies,
healthcare providers should be able to make more accurate
and timely diagnoses to help improve patient outcomes.
COVID-19 was the catalyst that began the shift toward
virtually-based healthcare, and increased sales of
consumer-based products, such as smartwatches, prove that
the public is ready for a change from traditional healthcare
service delivery. With the continuous improvement of these
technologies, both patients and providers can expect
increased adoption of these devices into many, if not all,
aspects of healthcare.
