RDCK recreation facilities working their way back to normal The Regional District of Central Kootenay (RDCK) welcomes the lifting of capacity restrictions and physical distancing requirements announced yesterday by the Provincial Health Officer (PHO), which will allow RDCK recreation facilities to begin to open up services to more people. “The lifting of restrictions is a positive sign for our recreation centres and our staff, because it means we can start working our way back to normal,” said Joe Chirico, General Manager of Community Services at the RDCK. “We look forward to opening up fitness, aquatics and other recreational opportunities to more people in the coming days, in line with what our current staffing levels will allow us to do safely.” While capacity limits have been lifted, RDCK recreation facilities will be reviewing how many people they can safely accommodate, and whether advance reservations for general admission fitness, aquatics and skating will still be required. This will look different at each recreation facility. Guests are encouraged to visit the website at www.rdck.ca/recreation to find out more about changes to each facility’s operating hours and admission process. Proof of vaccination with an official scannable QR code for those 12 and older, along with government-issued proof of identity for those 19 and older, is still required for recreation programs and services. Masks are also still required in all public indoor spaces at RDCK recreation facilities. Masks are not required while exercising, but are encouraged. Time-based memberships (RDCK Active Passes) that were previously on hold will be removed from hold and available for regular use as of Thursday, February 17. Exceptions may be in place for facilities that have reduced general admissions due to staffing levels. Creston and District Community Complex (CDCC) has closed its aquatics centre as of February 16 until further notice due to staffing shortages, and pass-holders can contact the CDCC directly to request a hold. Capacity limits for spectators at sporting events have also been lifted. Attendees of events at RDCK facilities must follow proof of vaccination and masking requirements, and should follow signage and staff direction for checking in to events. RDCK Special Meeting of Kaslo Housing Society called As you know, the Board of the Kaslo Housing Society is working hard, in partnership with New Commons Development and with considerable help from BC Housing, to make our project of a new 10-unit apartment building in lower Kaslo a reality. Construction should start in the spring! BC Housing has recently reviewed the Kaslo Housing Society’s bylaws to make sure that they are suitable to our project, and also that they align with BC Housing’s purposes and mandates. We’ve been advised to make some minor changes to our bylaws as soon as possible. The board of directors is calling for a Special Meeting of the membership so that we can get these changes made. (Bylaw changes must be ratified by the membership. Any motion to change the bylaws is a Special Resolution. It takes two-thirds of the membership present at the Special Meeting to pass a Special Resolution.) The Special Meeting will take place Wednesday, February 23 at 7pm via Zoom. (For Zoom link, please email info@kaslohousing.org) In brief, the bylaw changes are required in order that • The definition of the people who are eligible to live in the building be expanded to include people with modest incomes. (Currently it says that we only “serve” low income individuals and families.) • Kaslo Housing Society Directors can never by paid for their work on the project. • KHS cannot change its purpose without written agreement from BC Housing. • Should KHS decide to stop being a society, all its assets shall go to charitable organizations that have a similar purpose. To achieve our mission, To support the lifelong health and well-being of our community, the 60 members of the Victorian Hospital of Kaslo Auxiliary Society donated 2400 hours last year and gave $20,897 to the hospital and community: residents’ comfort ($9250), defibrillators and other equipment ($2147), community outreach ($2700), and bursaries ($6800). We are proud to be a member of the BC Association of Hospital Auxiliaries. The 70 auxiliaries in BC have 5,066 volunteers, 256 of them youth, and in 2020 they put in 680,175 hours while raising $8.1 million to donate to health care. Our main fundraiser is the one you are familiar with – the Thrift Store. We also garden. We make and sell a variety of crafts, and food items. We hold community events. Our May Days Victorian Tea (sometimes in full Victorian dress), Fashion Shows, Hallowe’en Spoofs, Craft Fairs and jewellery sales have been real hits.
