Sunset Beach Neighborhood Watch, Safety Improvements,
Ideas and Suggestions
By James Griffin, Co Founder Sunset Beach Business Association
Sunset Beach has been established now for over 119 years with its humble beginning in 1905 and developed as a result of the
discovery of oil in Huntington Beach in 1920. Many things have changed since then. Since becoming a homeowner in Sunset Beach
in 2005 and becoming a resident of Sunset Beach in 2010 I have witnessed the positive changes in Sunset Beach over the past 19
years. I feel there is still much to be done in Sunset Beach for the safety and betterment of our quaint community which was
annexed by the City of Huntington Beach in 2011.
Nothing is possible unless action is taken by the citizens and residents of Sunset Beach for changes I am hoping to see continued
changes take place in Sunset Beach that will result in a better and safer community for all to enjoy .
Here are the Suggestions Ideas a homeowner in Sunset Beach I would like to see considered
1. Establish of a Dog Beach area at the end of the Greenbelt the Southern end of Sunset Beach . Our Pooches love the beach and as
residents of Sunset Beach we should have a designated area in Sunset Beach for all to enjoy the beach with their pooches
2. A modern beach style pedestrian Bridge over PCH or unbderground tunnel starting at Peters Landing and ending on the
Greenbelt to allow safe passage for bike riders, dog walkers and pedestrians to safely cross the busy PCH. I visualize the Bridge as
having a beautiful graphic with Sunset Beach established 1905 across the top on both sides of the Bridge. If undeground tunnel
which may be more feasible 2 lanes each direction for bikers and pedestrians.
3. Posted Speed limits for all cars to see with flashing overhead lights not to exceed 25mph when driving through the Sunset Beach
Section of Huntington Beach. We have witnessed cars flying through Sunset Beach and smashing into Taco Surf and into a Light
Signal pole in front of Turks in 2020 with a fatality resulting. We have also had fatality in front of the Post office and a biker killed
just south of 7/11 due to reckless speeding drivers which needs to be address with speed bumps or flashing lights to prevent these
tragic accidents from continuing.
4. Suggest painting lane lines from the beginning of PCH as you enter Sunset Beach off Warner and the end as you leave Sunset
Beach over the Bridge past Simple Green to allow clear lanes for vehicles to stay in. There are no lane marks going north past Fish
Camp which has caused cars to get sideswiped and hit in the past.
5. Traffic Signals Needed leaving Peters Landing Entry where Starbucks is and also a Traffic Light is needed at the former Don the
Beachcomber. These additional Lights will slow down traffic and will allow for safer crossing for vehicles leaving those areas for
entry on to PCH.
6. Marked Bicycle Lanes on the bridge leading into Surfside and continued all through Sunset Beach on PCH in Both Directions to
keep Bikers safe as they pass through Sunset Beach and over the bridge.
7. Home mail delivery to all residents of Sunset Beach . It is unfair once annexed that the City of Huntington Beach did not incorporate
home mail deliveru the the 1000+ residents of Sunset Beach
8. Alternative upgrade or Removal of all Telephone Poles on Sunset Island for aesthetic reasons
9. Designated Police Patrol in Sunset Beach by the City of Huntington Beach. It appears the City of Huntington Beach lacks a
regular patrol assigned to the Sunset Beach area of Huntington Beach.
10. Pubic Restrooms on the Greenbelt Maintenance and Access. Make sure Public Restrooms on the one mile greenbelt are open
6AM— 9Pm 7 days a week . Not sure of the schedule at this time but many times I have noticed restrooms are locked on weekend
and busy periods.
We would love your comments and suggestions and hope we can present these suggestions to the City Council at
Huntington Beach in 2024 please email jbgriffin@jbgmg.com or call 562.810.8881
