Head Coach
Mark Bonner
Firstly, I’d like to welcome Steven Schumacher, his staff and players to
The Abbey for today’s Sky Bet League One tie against Plymouth Argyle.
Saturday was our 10th win in the league, which
is outstanding, and we are into the 40s with our
points tally with 14 games to go.
Recently we got a point at Fleetwood, a point at
Burton, lost at Gillingham - when we might have
taken something from the game - and of course a win
on Saturday. We find ourselves four wins and three
draws from the last nine league fixtures, which is an
excellent return.
To take the maximum against Accrington ahead of the
games we have got was quite important and I thought
we deserved it in the end.
I think what we know is that we can beat anybody. If
we turn up and give our very best, we are capable of
beating everybody in this league. But we also know
that anyone can beat us. That is the nature of this
league. It is highly competitive.
Wins are hard to come by and each one is a really
important one, including Saturday’s off the back of
a really tough week. We always needed it to be an
unload week for the players after so many games
and the lighter training load was crucial. Like many,
the pitches and weather made for a challenging
week in training. We actually didn’t train at all
on Friday and didn’t see the players. We did our
opposition meeting virtually and I was so pleased
with how we worked through the game. Physically,
we delivered some of our best data of the season
and that is testament to the players for their work
ethic and attitude, and the midweek break was so
crucial to that.
We should have got the second goal earlier and we
certainly should have made more of our attacking
play in the second half.
We had to wait too long to get the second goal. We
might have been able to make that more comfortable
against a team that never let you off the hook.
Dimi makes a good save late on from Bishop’s
header and we knew we were going to have to
defend. We spoke at half-time about making sure
we had more control of the game in the second half,
which we did, and then we have to make more of
those attacking situations.
In the first half our attacks ended in their attacks
too often. In the second half, our attacks didn’t end
in a chance often enough. The second goal was an
excellently worked goal, and well deserved. It is an
area of our game to keep improving.
The tests over the coming week will be huge.
Plymouth are flying, as are Oxford and Wycombe.
I hope the players can keep finding the levels to
compete in games, as I am proud of how they have
done so to this point.
At the time of writing we are waiting to see the players
and check on their health as we had some issues post
game which may see some of them missing tonight.
In the build up to the game, I watched our match with
Plymouth earlier in the season.
In that match Greg Taylor, Lloyd Jones, Jack Iredale,
Liam O’Neil, Shilow Tracey and Joe Ironside all
started. Add to that Jensen Weir and that is the
list of regular players we have had missing during
a superb start to 2022. We of course look forward
to welcoming some of these back soon, but in the
meantime keep backing the players as they are giving
everything they have got.
Enjoy the game.
Chief Executive Officer
ian mather
Welcome to all of the dedicated Pilgrims who made the 600-mile round
trip on a Tuesday night to support their team who are currently in a strong
position and in contention for promotion.
After a few games without a win
the 2-0 victory against Accrington
Stanley on Saturday was timely, as
was the goal from Wes Hoolahan
on 90+5.
I know a few Norwich fans who were
in the crowd who really enjoyed
seeing Wes play, and there is another
reason for any Canary to fly back to
the Abbey next Sunday.
Our Women are playing Norwich City
in Division One South East. Currently
we sit four places above Norwich in
the League. Normally matches are
played at St Neots but this is the first
of two of games where we will be at
the Abbey this season.
Manager Darren Marjoram will be in
Mark Bonner’s seat in the dugout and
we are hoping for a decent crowd.
Cheer on our players including; the
perfectly named Amber Cantwell,
stalwart Liz Pamplin, our own Head
of Youth Football Charlotte Crisp,
number 9 Ruth Fox and all of our
talented team. Expect to see a
determined performance, energy,
passion and goals. Season Tickets
are valid for these games, otherwise
entry is £3 for adults and kids come
in for a quid. Kick-off is at 2pm.
The second game at the Abbey is on
27th March. This is perfectly timed
to land on Mother’s Day. Flowers and
cards are ok, but nothing compared
to sharing family time together
watching some live football!
We want to do all we can to
encourage women to feel
comfortable coming to the Abbey.
We support the movement Her Game
Too and we were pleased to see
that U’s fan, CUSP panel member
and Amber Belle, Emma Smith has
been appointed as Ambassador for
our Club. Amongst other projects
we are working with Emma to
encourage girls’ teams to come to the
Shrewsbury game – details to follow.
Back to tonight. We are 32 games
into the season with 41 points on
the board. You know with this team
you will get 100% commitment and
a never give in mentality. Equally
our crowds have been impressive
throughout the campaign, both in
numbers and noise. Get behind the
U’s again tonight and make this a
day to remember for more than just
the date!
Enjoy the game.
Memories Down
Evenin’ all and an
especially warm
welcome to those
hardy pilgrims
making the 550 to
600-mile round trip
from Devon, and no
doubt another day
off work.
We are this evening focusing
on another wet and windy
evening in late February,
this time way back in 1994
in the aftermath of the Beck
halcyon period - the third
tier, Vandanel pin stripes and
scrap metal sponsors.
The Valiants from Burslem
were our visitors that evening,
who were having a great
season under old Aldershot
favourite Martin Foyle.
The U’s form since the turn
of the year had been mixed
with a sprinkling of wins,
draws and defeats. Our
interest in the FA Cup had
ended at Wycombe in early
December so five months of
concentrating on the good ol’
league beckoned. The season
actually exploded into life in
early April when we stuffed
Exeter 5-0 at St James’
Park, which was followed
by another resounding 3-0
win in Devon at tonight’s
opponents.
Huddersfield caught us cold
on a Monday evening on
their way back from Wembley
disappointment in a nine
goal thriller in their favour by
one. We saved the best for
our last outing of the season
at Ninian Park, with a 7-2
hammering of the bluebirds.
Remember Steve Butler?
Scan me to
read the archive
programme...
In true Cambridge Utd
fashion, we lost our last
game that season at the
Abbey against Bristol Rovers
in front of a decent crowd of
4,402. A tenth spot finish.
In case you were wondering,
we beat the Vale 1-0 that
night with the winner from
Gary Rowett, in the 89th
minute! In front of a miserly
2,543.
The defeat didn’t stop Vale
though as they ended up
finishing 2nd in May and
automatic promotion to
the second tier. Again, if
you were wondering, the
programme cover features
Barnet at the Abbey on 5
February – it took me a while
to work out that kit!
Enjoy yourselves.
Today’s Opposition
plymouth argyle
FOUNDED: 1886 | NICKNAME: THE PILGRIMS | STADIUM: HOME PARK | LAST SEASON: 18TH
Having seen the points
shared in Devon 186
days ago, Plymouth
Argyle make the 600-
mile round trip to the
Abbey Stadium this
evening with the aim
of consolidating their
position in the top six of
League One.
Steven Schumacher, undertaking
his first permanent role as Head
Coach following the departure
of Ryan Lowe in December, looks
to be continuing the good work
started by his predecessor, with the
Pilgrims heading to Cambridgeshire
this evening having won three on
the bounce in League One prior to
their clash with Gillingham at the
weekend – with only European and
newly crowned World Champions
Chelsea inflicting defeat on
Schumacher’s side after extra-time
in their previous five outings in
all competitions.
Conor Grant set the Pilgrims
up in good stead heading into
their game with Gillingham on
Saturday after scoring his sixth
goal of the season in Plymouth’s
1-0 win over Steve Cotterill’s
Shrewsbury Town last weekend.
The win, that made it three on
the spin in the third tier, saw the
Greens move back into Play-off
contention following Oxford
United’s defeat against Bolton.
Prior to last weekend’s result,
Ryan Hardie scored his 13th,
14th and 15th goal of the
campaign as the Pilgrims made
light work of a Crewe side staring
relegation directly in the face.
Niall Ennis was also involved
in the goals, scoring after 55
minutes to secure a 4-1 win.
United’s history with Plymouth
dates back to 1974, as a 4-1
Division Three loss saw the U’s
get off to a rough start in the
1974/75 season. A 3-1 win in the
reverse fixture however did help
address the balance and across
all meetings, it is Cambridge who
have the edge with 11 wins, 9
draws and 9 losses.
August’s meeting, a 1-1 draw
at Home Park whereby Joe
Ironside’s penalty cancelled out
Luke Jephcott’s opener, saw both
sides meet in the third tier of
English football for the first time
since 1994/95. Both games that
season ended in a draw, which
didn’t do much to help either
team, as both were relegated
come the end of the season.
The last time the U’s entertained
Plymouth at the Abbey was back
in 2019, with Kyle Knoyle’s goal
proving to be decisive as Colin
Calderwood’s side ran out 1-0
winners on the day. The result
sparked a run in which saw the
Pilgrims pick up 12 wins in 18
before March (and the eventual
end of the season due to
Covid-19) – with Ryan Lowe’s side
eventually being promoted by
virtue of points-per-game.
The Gaffer
Steven Schumacher
D.O.B: 30.04.1984
Place of Birth: Liverpool,
England
The midfielder called time
on a playing career that
spanned across 16 years
and nine clubs just three
and a half years ago before
making the step into
coaching. After spending
time coaching at Southport
and Bury, Schumacher
followed Ryan Lowe as
the pair made the switch
to the South Coast to join
Plymouth in 2019 – a move
that saw the coach handed
his first role as Assistant
Manager. Following an
instant return to League
One and a comfortable
mid table finish in the
third tier a season later
as Lowe’s number two –
December 2021 saw the
Home Park reigns handed
over to Schumacher as his
predecessor returned to
Lancashire to take over
at Preston. Five wins in
ten have followed prior
to the Pilgrims clash with
Gillingham on Saturday.
Safe Hands
Michael Cooper
Position: Goalkeeper
Age: 22
Nationality: English
The stopper is quickly
approaching his 100th game
between the sticks for the Pilgrims
– an impressive feat given the
Home Park academy graduate is
yet to celebrate his 23rd Birthday.
12 clean sheets in 36 appearances
this campaign, including a Man
of the Match display to keep out
39 of Chelsea’s 41 shots over
120 minutes at Stamford Bridge
a fortnight ago, saw the Exeter
born ‘keeper linked with a Premier
League move to Aston Villa.
Standing at 6’2” tall, Cooper will
be aiming to replicate the form of
last season – where he featured
in every minute of Plymouth’s 46
league games.
The Rock
Dan Scarr
Position: Defender
Age: 27
Nationality: English
Having made the switch from
Walsall in the summer, the former
Birmingham City defender has
quickly established himself at the
heart of both Ryan Lowe’s and
Michael Schumacher’s Argyle sides
– featuring in every game in League
One this season before being laid off
by injury prior to the Pilgrims clash
with Shrewsbury Town last weekend.
Scarr didn’t follow the traditional
route into professional football,
having progressed through the
ranks at Worcester City before the
centre back caught the eye of scouts
playing in the Southern Leagues
until 2017 for both Redditch United
and Stourbridge before being
snapped up by Championship side
Birmingham in the summer of 2017.
The Creator
Panutche Camará
Position: Midfidler
Age: 24
Nationality: Guinea-Bissau
Born in the tropical capital city
of Bissau, Guinea-Bissau, the
midfielder made a trade playing
in the lower leagues of Portugal
before being scouted by Primeira
Liga side Vitória de Guimarães
in 2015. A move from the north
coast of Portugal to South
Yorkshire followed just a year
later as Barnsley swooped in. Six
years and three clubs later, the
midfielder became one of only
two players in League One to be
named amongst squads in the
Africa Cup of Nations – with the
midfielder receiving his first call-up
to Guinea-Bissau’s squad – playing
in all three group games as Djurtus
finished bottom of Group D.
The Hitman
Ryan Hardie
Position: Forward
Age: 24
Nationality: Scottish
A duo of successful loan moves
from Blackpool throughout
the 19/20 and 20/21 season
saw the striker complete a
permenant move to the South
Coast in January 2021, as the
Pilgrims secured a comfortable
mid-table finish in their first
season back in the third tier.
Currently enjoying his first full
(permanent) season on the
south coast, the forward has
contributed to 18 goals in 33
appearances this campaign,
most recently marking his
return to Steven Schumacher’s
side by scoring three goals
in the Pilgrim’s 4-1 win over
relegation threatened Crewe
THIS EVENING WE WELCOME THE SUPPORTERS,
OFFICIALS AND PLAYING STAFF OF PLYMOUTH ARGYLE
TO THE ABBEY STADIUM.
Whenever there is
a match against the
Pilgrims my mind will
always go back to a
Saturday afternoon in
August 2014 when Josh
Coulson scored the
only goal of the match
following Cambridge
United’s return from
non-league.
Last year, the CUFC Lottery
paid for the provision of two
new scoreboards at the ground.
During recent games we have
been widening the use of them
on match days. If you would like
a birthday or special occasion
I was recently asked about the
story behind I’ve got a Lovely
been many theories as to why it is
played and whatever the reason
it will be forever associated with
it was a favoured singalong on
supporters› coaches in the 1950s,
others say that the man in charge
of the Tannoy in days gone by was
a Billy Cotton fan.
Several year ago
100yearsofcoconuts - the club’s
heritage group - asked U’s fans for
their memories of Coconuts, and
struck gold at the time with the
memories of long-term supporter
Robin Mansfield.
Robin recalled: “I was first taken
to the United when I was nine
in 1955 by a neighbour called
Jack Morgan. Jack was the public
announcer who had the bright
idea of playing I’ve Got A Lovely
Bunch Of Coconuts, sung by the
Billy Cotton Band. It was he who
first decided to play that record
whenever we had a win.
“I asked Jack why he chose
that particular record. His reply
was: ‘It was purely accidental. I
had a pile of records in front of
me and thought that one would
do!’ He just carried on playing it
and the tradition continues to
the present day.”
Whenever the U’s win at the
Abbey you’ll hear the breezy
strains of Coconuts at the
final whistle.
The song written by Fred
Heatherton in 1944 is now
as strongly connected with
Cambridge United as You’ll Never
Walk Alone is with Liverpool and
I›m Forever Blowing Bubbles is
with West Ham.
Away Travel Coach seats can now
be booked for the remaining
is enough demand we may
on separate days. For more
It was with great sadness that the
club recently received the sad
news about the passing of Gerald
Lowe. He became a director of
Cambridge United in September
1990 when the board was brought
up to its full complement of eight
with his appointment. At the time
Gerald was 49 and ran a coal
merchant and grocery business
with his brother in Thaxted. He
had previously been a member of
the Vice-Presidents’ Club since its
formation in 1970.
In Feb 2002, there was a
reorganisation at board level
as each director was given
responsibility for the different
areas of operation. Gerald became
retail director, responsible for the
club shop, lottery and catering.
Gerald left the board in June
2005, having announced that he
would be standing down as part
of the restructuring that included
the appointments as directors of
Nick Pomery and Justyn Medd.
Pomery said. “Gerald Lowe is
one of life’s true gentlemen.
He has made Justyn and I very
welcome in the boardroom and his
honesty at the AGM in standing
up and accepting collective
responsibility for the club’s difficult
position was humbling.”
Habbin
I HAD NEVER HEARD OF PLYMOUTH
ARGYLE UNTIL I BUMPED INTO A
NORMALLY TACITURN SCOTTISH
AIRMAN IN THE NAAFI AT RAF ANDOVER.
HE STARTED TO EXPLAIN WHY HE
SUPPORTED AN OBSCURE CLUB IN FAR
OFF DEVON AND WHY THEIR FANS WERE
SO PASSIONATE.
He became unexpectedly tearful as he explained
that they were about to be relegated from the
then Second Division, an experience we Cambridge
fans have now endured twice. In subsequent years
I wondered why a Scotsman of all people should
be so enamoured of Plymouth Argyle.
Perhaps it had something to do with the uniquely
named Argyle’s alleged link with the Argyll and
Sutherland Highlanders who were based near
Plymouth when the club were founded. The club were
impressed by their determination and insistence on
teamwork. How true either thing is I will never know.
Certainly there is a lively atmosphere in that city,
particularly when there is a football match in the
offing and where drink is involved. Home Park or
the Theatre of Greens, as the Wurzels prefer to call
it, is intimidating at the best of times. The ferocious
and loud support has certainly helped their teams to
produce commitment and fight. What is it about West
Country teams and green? Perhaps Plymouth and
Yeovil Town just like to be different.
Sir Francis Drake
Great things have small beginnings.
Oddly enough, Plymouth Argyle are the oldest
league club never to have played in the top flight.
They have certainly had their moments though,
not least this season when they gave much-fancied
Chelsea the fright of their lives in the FA Cup. Their
current manager Stephen Schumacher, much like
our own Mark Bonner, is a true leader able to get
the best from his players. Like us, they sometimes
struggle to attract the players they want. In their
case it may be because Plymouth is simply too far
from anywhere. As for Cambridge, only the very rich
can afford to buy a house here. It was not always so.
Many former United players opted to live out their
retirement in the city of King’s College and the Seven
Stars. Given that, the two clubs have attracted some
pretty decent players down the years.
One game against Plymouth that stands out in my
mind is the first game back in the league after an
exile of nine long years. It would have been quite
enough for me simply to be there. The icing on the
cake was Josh Coulson’s winner scored on the hour.
I jumped so high that I fell over the crash barrier
and descended several very hard steps. I didn’t care
though. Club legend Josh is now playing at Southend
United and I can’t jump quite so high, fortunately. No
doubt Josh would love it if we beat them again. It will
be a tough contest but, as a seasoned Habbinite, I
remain optimistic.
Another Tuesday and
another game in what has
been a very busy couple
of months. Tonight the
lads face a high flying
Plymouth team who will
provide a stern challenge.
As always, we wish Mark,
the players and the staff
the very best of luck for
tonight’s game
Unfortunately, the Women’s local
derby against Cambridge City
scheduled for last Wednesday
was postponed due to a
waterlogged pitch, and with no
game scheduled for the Sunday
that meant another gap between
fixtures. However, that gives
us the opportunity to put in
extra training to prepare for the
upcoming game at the Abbey
against Norwich City this coming
Sunday.
The opportunity for the Women’s
team to play at the Abbey shows
the commitment of Cambridge
United to female football. Not
only do we have a First and
Development Women’s team,
but we also have a thriving and
successful girls programme run by
Charlotte Crisp who also plays for
the Women’s side.
The Women’s teams have lots of
talented players playing in a strong
league against the likes of not only
Norwich City, but also Stevenage,
QPR and AFC Wimbledon. This
season in particular we have seen
girls progress from the female
programme to playing regularly for
the Women’s teams, showing the
strength of the system the club has
in place.
The Norwich City game on Sunday
27th February is something
everyone is very much looking
forward to. Myself and many
others involved in the team are
Cambridge United fans and for
us all it’s a huge honour to be
representing the club. We really
hope to have as many people as
possible there.
There is also a second fixture
arranged to be played at the
Abbey on Sunday 27th March
against title chasing Billericay,
so these two games are ones we
have all looked forward to for
some time. The club and the
directors have shown tremendous
support for female football by
playing these two games at the
Abbey and we are very lucky to be
part of a club that truly cares about
football for all.
Both games at the Abbey are
free for Season Ticket Holders and
pay on the day for everyone else
at just £3 for Adults and £1 for
Kids, so it is a fantastic opportunity
to bring the family to Cambridge
United for an afternoon of football.
Let’s make a statement on and
have as many people there as
possible to enjoy what should be a
brilliant afternoon.
Now let’s all get behind Mark and
the team tonight and hopefully
by the end of the evening be
celebrating another three vital
points. Come on you U’s!
CFU STRONGLY BELIEVES THAT FOOTBALL IS FOR
EVERYONE AND CONTINUES TO BE UNDERTAKE A
NUMBER OF PROJECTS AIMED AT CHAMPIONING
DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION WITHIN THE FOOTBALL CLUB.
We were pleased to recently learn
that committee member Emma
Smith has become an ambassador
representing Cambridge United
with #HerGameToo. Her Game
Too is a campaign group ran
by female football fans to raise
awareness of sexist abuse in
football, you can check out the
great work they are doing by
visiting their website.
CFU was also pleased to be able
to welcome a new addition to their
committee in Anouska Wright.
Anouska, a lifelong U’s fan who
stands in the Habbin Stand with
her family on Matchdays, will be a
valuable member of the committee
and will work together with Emma
on the Amber Belles female
supporters group amongst other
projects. If you would like to get
involved and help CFU in some
way then please do get in touch.
Amber Belles recently made
a suggestion about sanitary
provisions for females at matches
and we are delighted to see it has
been taken on board. Thanks go
to Cambridge City Fundraisers,
Newmarket Road Tesco’s and Ian
Darler who have kindly offered to
sponsor this and fans should now
find sanitary products available in
female toilets around the stadium
on a Matchday.
Both CFU & Amber Belles welcome
suggestions from our fanbase on
how we can improve the Matchday
experience, so please do get in
touch. The Amber Belles are a
welcoming bunch of Women and
you can find out details on how
to join them for social events and
chats by searching for Amber
Belles on Social Media.
Finally, Cambridge United Ladies
football team need your support!
They are playing at the Abbey on
27th February against Norwich
City in an important league fixture.
It would be great to see as many
U’s fans come down and support
the fixture and show some support
to the females that represent our
football club.
Cambridge United
Cambridge United bowed
out of the FA Youth Cup
at the Fifth Round stage
with a gut-wrenching 3-5
defeat on penalties after a
resolute stalemate against
Nottingham Forest at the
Abbey Stadium.
The sides could not be separated
throughout a battling 120
minutes of football which
showcased defensive grit and
determination. In a tense penalty
shootout, it was the visitors who
prevailed and forcing an end to
United’s mazy cup campaign – a
feat that saw them equal their
best-ever run.
Jimmy Unwin shuffled his pack by
making two changes to the side
that dominated Premier League
opponents Leeds United in the
previous round – Dan Barton and
Joe Tarpey returned to the fold,
replacing Frank Nzeh and Nathan
Braithwaite respectively.
As they’ve been well accustomed to
in the majority of their encounters
this season, the U’s enjoyed a
rampant start as they applied heavy
pressure towards the visitors. A
menacing cross into the final third
caused havoc as it landed towards
Harvey Beckett who pounced from
close-range which was scooped
towards a Forest defender and
headed away from danger.
On the 12th minute, a clever
tee-up from Dan Barton released
Glenn McConnell down the left
flank – allowing the midfielder to
unleash an attempt from a tricky
angle that lashed the side-netting.
Five minutes later, the restored
Barton twisted and turned in the
corner of the penalty box and
arrowed a powerful shot that
Aaron Bott palmed away.
Warren Joyce’s men forged their
first real opportunity of the match
after 24 minutes when a one-two
between Kyle McAdam and Josh
Powell resulted in the former
pulling the trigger from 15 yards
which was denied by Beckett’s
last-ditch tackle.
More than holding their own,
United kick-started a counter
attack through Kai Yearn on the
31st minute – the England youth
international marauded forwards
from the middle of the park and
went to play in Brandon Njoku
– despite generating too much
power, it almost resulted in a freak
own goal when Bott misplaced his
touch as it trickled past the post
and out for a corner.
After George Hoddle was brought
down on the edge of the box on 37,
Yearn was handed the opportunity
to write more deadlines from a
similar position to his opener last
time out at the Abbey. The free-kick
had venom as it floated towards the
top left corner, but Bott caught it
with assurance.
As the heavens opened on the
slick pitch, the Reds were handed
their fair share of chances. On 41,
Esapa Osong was sent through
down the left channel and drilled
towards the side-netting with only
Tom Finch to beat, who had his
angles correct.
United’s keeper was called into
action seconds after. When Jack
Thompson picked up the ball
from close-range, the home
faithful feared the worst, but
an outstanding save from the
ever-present ensured deadlock
going into the break. Overall, it
concluded an extremely positive
first period for the Category
Three side who had asked serious
questions of the boys in Garibaldi.
Remaining assertive defensively
and posing a threat in the final
third, the U’s delivered some
quick-fire attempts just shy of the
hour mark. First, Njoku shrugged
off his marker before pulling back
for McConnell who poked wide,
before a Yearn free-kick from
25 yards out had an audacious
amount of curl and power which
was matched by Bott’s diving save.
A slight storm had to be
weathered from here. Jack Nadin
performed a defence-splitting
pass to release Osong on the
64th minute but the striker was
denied by Finch’s no-nonsense
save with his feet.
A slight communication mishap
in the six-yard box four minutes later
allowed Osong to capitalise and fire
a header which Finch matched with a
comfortable catch – the U’s number
one had risen to the occasion every
time he was called upon.
With seconds left on the clock, the
hosts almost delivered a dramatic
ending of the highest proportion
when a floating cross fell towards
the path of Reece Hipwell who
executed a volley which was
inches over the crossbar. It proved
the last chance of an evenlymatched
affair with nothing to
separate the well-drilled sides.
Starting as they meant to go on,
United were agonisingly close to
drawing first blood with virtually
the first kick of extra-time. In a
one-on-one position, Njoku raced
towards goal but under immense
pressure couldn’t slot home as it
rolled inches wide.
At the back end of the first 15,
substitute Jack Perkins sent Osong
through on goal with a pinpoint
through ball but Finch was out
well to clear the danger.
On the 107th minute, sublime
linkup play between Njoku and
Yearn resulted in the number
10 performing a jinking run that
beat two Forest defenders before
cannoning a shot that was denied
by the heroics of Bott who got
down low.
Without the net being bulged,
drama was sparked on the
114th minute when dangerman
Osong received a straight red card
for a strong challenge on Hipwell
outside the penalty area.
Unable to capitalise, the boys in
amber were forced to dig deep
with last-ditch defending to ensure
Arron-Jay Korpal and Thompson
couldn’t prod home a goalmouth
scramble on 119.
It was the least the rearguard
deserved after a resolute
performance where they defended
like trojans to ensure a clean sheet
and force penalties for the third
time this cup campaign. Cruelly, it
wasn’t to be from 12 yards as they
fell to a 3-5 defeat, confirming
Forest will travel to Blackburn
Rovers in the next round.
Whilst the circumstances of the
loss is a difficult pill to swallow, the
U18’s will have every right to feel
immense pride for a thoroughly
entertaining cup run where they’ve
proven they’re a match for anyone.
Giving Football Back to
Small Business
At eBay, we know small business and
football clubs used to be like chips and
gravy, two peas in a pod – a match
made in community heaven.
Ironmongers, ship workers, spring
makers and cobblers, all formed clubs
which decades later are still prospering.
But nowadays, you’d think it was all
eyewatering transfers, Super Leagues
and mega sponsors, detached from the
humble origins of our historic clubs.
That’s why eBay are proud to support
300,000 small businesses who help
power EFL clubs nationwide. We’ll be
donating our advertising space to a lot
of these businesses – on match day
hoardings, around grounds and beyond –
throughout the coming season, to ensure
they can continue to thrive in our local
communities. So, join us in giving your
support to Small Business Power, because
today, they need us more than ever.
It’s great to welcome the Plymouth fans to the
Abbey Stadium for this night-time game under the
lights. Just over a week ago though, 79 brave souls
came to the Abbey for a night under the stars!
An incredible £30,000 has been raised from the United
for Cambridge Sleepout which saw over 80 people
spend the night outside in the Abbey Stadium.
U’s fans and teams from local companies slept under
the D&A Main Stand on Friday 11th February to raise
awareness of and fundraise for local homelessness
charity, Wintercomfort, alongside the Community
Trust’s work with our city’s most vulnerable residents.
Thank you to the teams from Biocair, Cambridge
United’s Media Team, Cambridge University Press
& Assessment, Carbon Funding Consultants
Cambridge, Co-op, Costello Medical, D&A (sleeping
under their sponsored stand!), Deloitte, Front
Foot Creative, Hill Group, Kameo Recruitment, PA
Consulting, Purple & Green, Safety Rocks & University
of Cambridge Institute of Continuing Education.
Before heading out to the stands, the sleepers got
to meet their fellow participants by enjoying a quiz
and warm meal in the toasty confines of the Signature
Suite. Strategies of where to sleep were discussed
and varied. Some opted for the top of the Main
Stand, some U’s fans chose to sleep next to their
season ticket seat and others questionably close to
the warmth of the Press Box!
The night itself was a bitterly cold one, dropping
down to just under four degrees centigrade and
certainly wasn’t the most comfortable night’s
sleep. Everyone gathered again in the morning for
breakfast, but as the participants went off to warm
beds and showers, all recognised that the experience
pales in comparison to what rough sleepers go
through every single night.
Since 1991, Wintercomfort has supported men
and women who are homeless or at risk of losing
their home. Open every day of the year, the charity
provides daily welfare support for rough sleepers
with hot meals, showers, laundry services, clothing
and healthcare.
Through a comprehensive range of counselling,
therapy, training and specialist housing advice,
Wintercomfort aim to help people find employment,
rebuild their lives and move towards a more positive
future. Last year, Wintercomfort supported around
500 individuals although sadly, the current economic
climate and rising living costs are currently resulting
in a sharp increase in demand for services.
Melody Brooker, Fundraising and
Communications Manager at Wintercomfort
explained, “The past two years under
the shadow of the pandemic have been a
great challenge to the charity. The funds
raised via this sleepout event will be an
incredible boost to our welfare budget
supporting those at greatest need in
our community. We are so grateful
to all those who participated and
supported and of course, to our
friends and partners Cambridge
United Community Trust.”
SATURDAY’S WIN OVER ACCRINGTON FURTHER
CEMENTED THE U’S COMFORTABLE MID-TABLE
BERTH, WITH VICTORY WRAPPED-UP LATE ON
COURTESY OF WES HOOLAHAN.
At the time, I had perhaps not
appreciated the quality with
which he despatched the ball
into the bottom corner, following
James Brophy’s excellent slalom
run. However, after watching
the highlights, it became clear
that his quick-thinking; a brief
glance up to see where both
the defender and goalkeeper
were placed prior to him sliding
the ball between the legs of the
former and completely wrongfooting
the latter, was a genius
passage of play.
Any fan who has seen United’s
no.14 regularly, though, will know
this is not a moment in isolation.
Wes has now played 58 times in
black and amber, scored eight
times from midfield and provided
21 assists. Not bad for a 39-yearold
and an age at which most
professionals have long since
retired. A huge influence on so
many occasions last season, his
guile sealed countless points en
route to promotion. Remember
the commanding display and
winning goal in the victory over
Forest Green, the assist and then
crucial winner against Harrogate,
or the swirling free kick during
the glorious final day win over
Grimsby? You can also add in some
influential displays from the current
campaign. The home success over
Bolton perhaps, where he expertly,
even nonchalantly, pulled the
strings in midfield?
He has indeed been in good
company over the past couple of
seasons, with the current U’s side
being one of the most cohesive
that supporters have seen in many
years, but the experience Wes
brings compliments that brilliantly.
It is no surprise, though, when
you consider his CV, which details
more than 650 career appearances
– a good number of those in
the Premier League – close to
100 goals, myriad promotions
and 43 caps for the Republic of
Ireland. His international career
was also topped very nicely with a
wonderful strike to defeat Sweden
at the Euro 2016 finals.
This may all seem a little indulgent
but, the question, who is the best
player you have seen in a U’s
shirt, is now an often asked one
amongst the fanbase, given Wes’
impact.
Dion Dublin maybe, who lead the
U’s frontline under John Beck,
scored 73 goals and, played
with an elegance at times, that
almost made the job look too
easy, leading to a £1m move to
Manchester United. Dave Kitson,
whose talent was spotted and then
quickly developed, as he bagged
nearly 50 goals for the club
before switching to Reading and
top flight football in 2003, then
further multi-million-pound deals.
The stylish Steve Fallon, who was
the lion at the heart of United’s
backline during the 70s and 80s,
much of that at Division One level,
will also be the choice of many.
Whoever your pick, you will be
enjoying seeing Wes strut his
stuff in black and amber during
the current era. Another season
perhaps Mr Hoolahan?
A SCHEDULE WHICH SAW NINE GAMES PLAYED OUT WAS
NEVER GOING TO DAMPEN A WEEKEND WHICH SAW
GOALS, GOALS AND EVEN MORE GOALS - 34 OF THEM
BEING PLUNDERED AS THE DIVISION WENT MANIC.
With the solitary point
separating 4th and 8th and
plenty still to play for at the foot
end of the table, you can never
say never in regards to all 24 of
our members’ fate.
The box office tie between the
division’s heavyweights Rotherham
United and Wigan Athletic
resulted in a hard-fought 1-1 draw
on Friday night. After shaking off
Storm Eunice throughout the day,
the Millers had another battle
on their hands when Stephen
Humphrey ended a tense opening
by finishing with aplomb. A
five-month unbeaten run at the
AESSEAL New York Stadium
remained intact, nonetheless,
when Ollie Rathbone’s
barnstormer fifteen minutes from
time ensured the hosts retained
their distance of six points at the
summit - although the Latics do
have two games in hand.
MK Dons stretched their
unbeaten run to six games with
an accomplished 1-2 success
over fellow promotion-chasers
Sunderland at the Stadium of
Light. After initially being kept at
bay, the visitors’ pressure paid off
moments after the break when Mo
Eisa slotted home. Ross Stewart
cancelled out the attempt with his
19th of the season ten minutes
later, but the script was written
for Connor Wickham to haunt
his former club on 76 to hand
Liam Manning’s side a four-point
cushion over 4th. In treacherous
form, the Black Cats are winless in
five and drop out of the play-offs.
Oxford United returned to winning
ways with a resounding 0-4 win
against ten-man Charlton Athletic at
the Valley. Matty Taylor got the ball
rolling with a quickfire brace before
Sam Baldock put the game to bed
with a curling attempt on the 54th
minute. The Addicks’ afternoon got
worse when Sean Clare received
his marching orders and United
capitalised through Cameron
Brannagan in the closing stages.
Three defeats on the bounce puts
Johnnie Jackson’s men 16th going
into a tricky schedule.
Plymouth Argyle cruised to a
comprehensive 0-2 success against
relegation-avoiding Gillingham –
their first at Priestfield in 41 years.
Dominant throughout, second-half
goals from Jordan Garrick and
Luke Jephcott sealed the deal for
tonight’s visitors, who occupy 5th
and are hunting a fifth win on the
trot. As for the Gills, they languish
in 22nd and are five points from
safety – although their recent form
has been vastly superior to the
three currently surviving by the
skin of their teeth.
An eye-popping, rip-roarer
of a spectacle at Adams Park
concluded in a 5-5 draw for
the ages between Wycombe
Wanderers and Cheltenham
Town. Three goals in a sevenminute
spell in the first half was
then remarkably bettered by four
goals in a five-minute salvo in
the second period. For the hosts,
Jordan Obita and Sam Vokes
helped themselves to a brace,
whereas Alfie May bulged the
onion bag four times – topping
his tally to a sizzling eight goals
in four games. Dejected and now
winless in five, Gareth Ainsworth’s
men sink to 6th. Where the Robins
are concerned, they’re steady
in 15th and have only lost once
in 2022 – although this was the
third time this campaign they’ve
shipped five goals.
Sheffield Wednesday remain in
the mix after a 1-3 comeback
victory over Doncaster Rovers.
A Dan Gardner penalty gave the
hosts an invaluable lead, but the
Owls roared back with goals from
Callum Patterson, Saido Berahino
and Barry Bannan to ensure 8th
after a fifth win in six. Yet to
register back-to-back wins, Donny
are 23rd and have played more
games than all of their rivals.
Kieran McKenna’s fruitful start as
Ipswich Town boss continued after
they dispatched Burton Albion 3-0
at Portman Roan thanks to finishes
from Kayden Jackson, Wes Burns
and Bersant Celina. A fourth straight
home win and four consecutive
clean sheets for the first time since
2013, the Tractor Boys are solidified
in 9th whereas the Brewers are 12th
after one win in five.
The form team of the division
Bolton Wanderers retained their
devastating form with a 4-0
thrashing of AFC Wimbledon. Jon
Dadi Bodvarsson opened his goal
account, whereas Dapo Afolayan
opened the floodgates for Dion
Charles and Amadou Bakayoko to
complete the rout. After taking 22
points from their last 27 available,
the Trotters are 10th and real
play-off outsiders. Contrasting, the
Dons are depleted and without
maximum points since early
December – they’re a place and
point afloat.
Cambridge United put in an
assuring shift as they edged out
Accrington Stanley 2-0 at the
Abbey Stadium to kill off a fourgame
winless run. Sam Smith
poked home his 14th of the season
for the side in 14th, before Wes
Hoolahan drilled home an exquisite
shot on the cusp of the whistle
– his first in the third tier since
March 2010. John Coleman’s men
sit a place above with both sides
adamant they can finish the season
in a consistently sound manner.
