IN THE CHAIR
with Simon Negus
A warm welcome to Holyport for today's
Cherry Red Records Combined Counties
League Premier Division North fixture.
Good evening and welcome to the Racecourse for
tonight’s Combined Counties league game against our
close neighbours from Holyport.
Our last home game was a fantastic County Cup win
against Thatcham which set up last week’s momentous
win at Didcot Town in the quarter finals and a potential tie
against one of the big boys in the semi finals.
It’s also been great to see some of our youth teams
performing well in the County Cups this season – well
done to Bjorn Dunkley and his U14 team who have reached
the final in that competition and I know several other
teams are at semi-final stages. Success is never
guaranteed of course - hearing of the heartache for the
U12 Girls when they went out on penalties at the semifinal
stage was less welcome!
Our Ladies first team now sit in third place in the league
and are on track for the highest ever finish – great credit
to Darrel, Alix and the whole team and with the Reserves
also performing so well and securing promotion by early
Feb it really is a healthy time for the ladies section. We
also have a very strong under 16 girl section who are now
on the pathway to senior football and that will be
fascinating to see this section develop over the coming
years. The pathway for younger girls at Ascot Utd is as
clear as it is for the boys - 16 year old Tia Johnson was
voted Ladies player of the month for January after making
a huge impact.
One of the best games I’ve seen at the Racecourse this
season happened a few weeks back as Josh Nice's U18
Allied Counties team took on Westfield in a top of the
table clash. Trailing Westfield by one point but with a
game in hand, both teams knew how important this game
was but the Young Yellamen were trailing 3-1 going into
the final quarter. The scenes at the end as we secured an
equaliser with the last kick of the game showed how
much it meant to the players and staff involved. There is
still a job to be done to secure the title but whatever
happens this has been a fantastic campaign for Josh and
his team. Simon
