SOLAR SECTOR
BOOSTING MANUFACTURING
The economic activities largely depend on the availability of electricity. The
electricity generation based on fossil fuels is not desirable, as it pollutes the
environment and due to this the growth is not sustainable. Many countries
including India are on the lookout for clean energy sources which safeguards the
environment as well as contribute to the economic growth. India has committed
to meeting its 40% of electricity requirement from non-fossil energy sources by
2030 as part of its Nationally Determined Contributions at COP 21. This goal was
met in November 2021 itself. As of 30.11.2021, the country’s installed Renewable
Energy capacity is 150.54 GW (solar: 48.55 GW, wind: 40.03 GW, Small hydro
Power: 4.83, Bio-power: 10.62, Large Hydro: 46.51 GW), whereas its nuclear
energy-based installed capacity is 6.78 GW. This takes the total installed nonfossil
energy capacity to 157.32 GW, accounting for 40.1 percent of total installed
electrical capacity of 392.01 GW. Sandeep Sharma takes a look at the
opportunities available in the solar manufacturing sector.
