E) Service:
The focus of outreach this year has been our Reading Programme. Every week, twice a week, 12 scholars and a
teacher went to Chakaza and Zwelisha Primary Schools in the
KaNyamazane area to improve
literacy amongst the grade 3
learners. Over the approximately
20 sessions, a great deal of
improvement has been noted by
the teachers as well as the
Penreach staff. The scholars
found a talent for teaching and all
without exception found it
rewarding. At the end of the year, each
grade 3 was presented with a painted
T-shirt painted by grade 8’s and 11’s
on their camps, as well as a handmade
book with the poems, in colour, that we
had covered during the year. The
learners were thrilled with their gifts,
and the teachers plan to continue our
work with these books, in grade 4!
On a different note, the scholar
executive committee member for 2012,
Robyn Schorman, issued the scholars
with a number of “challenges” for the
year. The first, a Crayon Rainbow, saw scholars bring pens, pencils
and kokis in good condition and construct a rainbow under the Marula tree.
These were then donated to the Ntataise Trust, that assists under resourced
pre- and primary schools. In addition to this books and posters made during
the Round Square Day were enthusiastically made and
received by the same organization.
The second challenge was the Toilet Roll Tower to
which all had to donate at least one roll. These 700 rolls
were then most gratefully accepted by Child Welfare
Nelspruit, for distribution.
The Coin Toss was lots of fun, and involved all scholars throwing coins, and notes, of any
denomination into a designated square by grade, in the Chapel. The prize, sports clothes
during exams! The grade 12’s won hands down and R3000 in total was collected. Tins were
bought and donated to Nelspruit Community Forum for distribution to the many homes which they support on an ongoing
basis.
thoughtful and GRIP was very grateful.
The Civvies Day in the third term was in aid of GRIP
and all scholars had to bring an item, by grade, to
put into ‘care packs’ for rape survivors. In addition
to this to show solidarity, scholars were encouraged
to wear an item of white. Many were generous and
TOM’S Day Without Shoes was done by both Prep and High School and over 1000 pairs of shoes in good condition
were collected. A couple of churches who support orphans as well as Children in Distress benefitted from the
donations. They were painstakingly sorted into sizes, some packaged per child and sent off; a mammoth but
worthwhile task.
Our CANSA Pink and Blue Day brought in R2500 and many charmingly attired scholars!
We once again visited Mbonisweni Feeding Scheme and played with the children and helped out.
One teacher and 3 scholars did the Amazing Race for Child Welfare Nelspruit. They were the only ‘all girl’ group and
brought in R1500 for this event.
Three computers were donated to Children in Distress for their computer literacy programme. The money to fund this
was collected from book sales, quizzes and civvies days over the past couple of years.
During the Round Square Conference two service projects were
undertaken; the one being Support a Stranger. All delegates
were asked to choose a child of a certain age and gender, and
bring items such as undies, vests and socks, that could be
packaged during the conference. 400 boxes were packaged
after each delegate painted an appropriate t shirt, and allocated
to those less fortunate through Children in Distress and other
agencies. The second project involved all delegates going out to
one of 15
partner schools
and doing an activity, and playing with, the grade 1’s and 2’s. This
went extremely well and gave the delegates an idea of the
challenges that face many South African children on a daily basis.
The end of the year sees Child Welfare supported again in the form
of Christmas stars which are gifts required by that charity for children
less privileged. Stars are taken and the Christmas wish fulfilled by
tutor groups and individuals. We are hoping to fulfil at least 100
Christmas wishes this year.
G) Environmental:
The Foundation Phase sang, “Reduce, re-use,
recycle”. Our primary environmental project this
year has been recycling. Paper bins were
placed in every classroom and emptied by
scholars at a paper station. Sets of 3 blue steel
drums have also been introduced for cans,
plastic and other waste. As an Eco-school we
are introducing projects at school to get
scholars into good ‘green’ habits. These topics
are also covered in the classroom. During
Arbour Week we planted Waterberry (Tree of
the year) and other trees next to the netball
courts, and below the sports pavilion,
remembering that trees are the lungs of the
earth.
We celebrated Weedbuster Day when we cut
Invasive Alien Plants (AIPs) over about a
hectare on the school grounds.
A number of environmental groups exist on
campus, namly: The Falconry group run by
Steve van Rensburg the Wildlife Club run by
Mike Meidlinger and two scholar groups, the
ELFs (challenged the school to collect a ton of
paper) and the Rhino group (participated in
World Rhino Day at Riverside Mall).
This year the environment, as part of our
Mission statement, was featured in a many
chapels (e.g. Grade 4’s Rhino theme), classes
(e.g. Grade 11 Environmental Management
Project) and activities (e.g. the International
Round Square Conference-especially noting the
opening production, scholar field trips, Science
Expos, Prep Hobby Week, Foundation phase
planting of gardens). We planted our Lowveld
Calendar Garden, a project researching Climate
change and Duncan Butchardt led 2 bird walks
on the campus. Lee-ann McClelland got started
with a SHE committee, to ensure health and
safety in our environment.
This year’s recycling theme has been
challenging as it was implemented in all areas
of the school and involved all staff and scholars.
In 2013 we will introduce a new Eco-school
theme.
Round Square International Conference
Sixty Round Square schools from all corners of the globe descended on Penryn College this holiday in what
can only be described as an amazing 6 day conference and an unbelievable African experience. The theme of
the conference “no existence without coexistence” focused on two of the pillars of Round Square, namely
environment and community service. Through engaging key note speakers and visits to surrounding areas,
delegates were given the opportunity to witness the problems which are so evident in Africa as a continent and
to discuss possible solutions for our future generations. All the delegates were privileged to spend a night in
the Kruger National Park and to visit some of our local tourist sites. In the spirit of Ubuntu , the generous
donations received from all delegates will be distributed to the many needy children in the surrounding
community. The success of this conference was a result of the hard work and dedication of our amazing
Baraza leaders, staff and scholars. Africa tends to creep into one’s soul and we have no doubt that the
delegates left with a piece of Africa in their hearts.
