Although Sikkim is home <strong>of</strong> diverse ethnic groups, the interests <strong>of</strong><br />

the groups are hardly conflicting. It is more so in the North District where<br />

the tribal Lepcha-Bhutia groups have coexisted for centuries in harmony.<br />

Having been brought under the religious fold <strong>of</strong> Buddhism, the Lepchas<br />

<strong>of</strong> Sikkim who by nature were accommodative share common interests<br />

with the Bhutias. The conflict situations that might have developed over<br />

the distribution <strong>of</strong> resources could not surface due to judicious<br />

distribution <strong>of</strong> land by the Sikkim ruler among the Kazis (landlords) <strong>of</strong><br />

both Lepcha and Bhutia origin.
