SOCIO-ECONOMIC PROFILE OF SIKKIM<br />
The present work is a study on socio-economic resources <strong>of</strong><br />
Sikkim. The report <strong>of</strong> the Phase III is divided into four parts as per<br />
specifications given in the project proposal. These are: Demographic<br />
Pr<strong>of</strong>ile, Amenities, <strong>Cultural</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>ile and Quality <strong>of</strong> Life. The first two<br />
sections i.e. Demographic Pr<strong>of</strong>ile and Amenities are prepared chiefly on<br />
the basis <strong>of</strong> secondary data collected from the Directorate <strong>of</strong> Census<br />
Operations, Gangtok and the Directorate <strong>of</strong> Economics, Statistics,<br />
Monitoring and Evaluation, Gangtok. Preparation <strong>of</strong> the third section, i.e.<br />
<strong>Cultural</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>ile involved both secondary and primary data. The final<br />
section, i.e. Quality <strong>of</strong> Life is entirely based on primary data collected<br />
during fieldwork.<br />
4.1 DEMOGRAPHIC PROFILE OF SIKKIM<br />
4.1.1 Human Population and Trends<br />
The total population <strong>of</strong> Sikkim as per the Census <strong>of</strong> Sikkim (2001)<br />
is 5,40,851 comprising 2,88,484 male and 2,52,367 female (Fig. 4.1).<br />
The sex ratio in Sikkim is quite low. There are only 875 female per 1000<br />
male. About 4,80,981 people <strong>of</strong> Sikkim live in rural areas while only<br />
