THURSDAY 10 MARCH 2022 | UNDER-20 SIX NATIONS
Welcome one and all to Parc Eirias.
It’s always a pleasure to welcome
the next generation of players to
Colwyn Bay as they navigate their
way towards senior international
status.
North Wales has proved a
welcoming and friendly host in
recent years where some great
memories have been forged with
Wales U20s making Colwyn Bay
their home.
Since the formation of the U20
age group in 2008, a staggering 71
players have gone on to full senior
representative honours with Wales.
Ospreys hooker Dewi Lake was the
latest to join the congregation when
he earned his first Wales cap as a
second half replacement against
Ireland in the opening round of
Guinness Six Nations.
So there is every likelihood we will
today witness at least one new star
in the making.
Best of luck to both teams and I
hope everyone enjoys a wonderful
game of entertaining rugby.
Enjoy the game.
TRUE GRIT
WALES HEAD COACH BYRON HAYWARD WILL BE LOOKING FOR A REPEAT
PERFORMANCE OF TRUE GRIT AND DETERMINATION WITNESSED IN THE DEFEAT
TO ENGLAND WHEN HIS YOUNG SIDE HOST FRANCE IN THE PENULTIMATE
ROUND OF THE U20 SIX NATIONS THIS EVENING AT PARC EIRIAS.
4THURSDAY 10 MARCH 2022 | UNDER-20 SIX NATIONS
Wales ran themselves into the
ground after seeing talismanic
captain Alex Mann sent off in
the 28th minute in Doncaster.
In the modern age you must be whiter than
white, and Wales found that to their cost against
England. What at the time looked like a perfectly
well timed tackle by Mann in the 28th minute, was
then dissected by the TMO and deemed to be a
shoulder to the head of Emeka Ilione.
A promising opening quarter which saw Wales
take the game to their hosts and visibly unsettled
them, was then turned on its head with Mann
seeing red to leave his side a man down for the
rest of the match.
Welsh heads could so easily have dropped, but
they battled away feverishly and made England
work hard for their tries. The final score-line of 43-
14 belied the herculean effort the young men in
red put in as England cut loose and clinically made
sure the extra man counted.
“The boys gave everything - in terms of work
rate and effort I couldn’t have asked any more of
the boys, they gave everything they could,” said
Hayward.
“The scoreboard doesn't do justice with the
effort the boys put in and I know if you look at the
first 25 minutes of that game, I thought we were
more than competitive and we certainly would
have made a good game of it if we had 15 for the
entire match.”
“Ultimately the extra man obviously did the
damage, and it took its toll in the last 20 minutes.
We just ran out of gas; we were trying to use
the bench and they were doing as much as they
could. I couldn’t ask anymore at the end of day
because at this level it does take its toll.
“The fact is I guess if it's the last 10 to 15 minutes
of a game you can manage at 14 but when it
happens with less than 30 minutes gone and you
lose someone that early it takes its toll in the last
10-15 minutes, which it did.”
Joe Hawkins
Harri Houston
Even in defeat, Hayward said his side would have
learned from the experience and will look forward
to their next challenge against France.
“We started really well and scored a good try
against England. We took the game to them. We
made a lot of individual errors which you have at
this level, but I thought we went out and showed a
lot of positive intent.
“We will take our learnings from it and have
prepared for a very tough game against the
French. We are here to win games of rugby, we're
doing everything we can to take a proud Welsh
team back to Colwyn Bay and show the fans what
we are capable of doing.”
Wales centre Joe Hawkins was also encouraged
with the effort his side put in against England
in demanding circumstances and believes his
side can upset France tonight if they can put an
80-minute display together.
“The first 20 minutes against England really
showed what we are capable of,” he recalled.
“We were more than capable of going to
Doncaster and coming away with a result. We had
a purple patch right at the start where we went
over early, but I think a couple of penalty decisions
we should have possibly gone for the posts and
Thank you for your support | Diolch am eich cefnogaeth
Iestyn Hopkins
kept the scoreboard ticking over but we backed
ourselves to get another try on the board and you
can’t blame us for that.
“Obviously the red card didn’t help but that is
something you have to deal with sometimes in
rugby. Going down to 14 men is always hard to
adapt but the boys stuck at it pretty well.
“There’s nothing better than playing in front of
a home crowd and we witnessed that against
Scotland where we had some great support so it
would be nice to go back up to North Wales and
put in a good performance against France.”
JENKINS DREAMING OF WALES
U20 RETURN THIS SUMMER
DAFYDD JENKINS WAS LOOKING FORWARD TO A SECOND SHOT AT THE U20
SIX NATIONS THIS YEAR BUT WAS FORCED OUT OF THE WALES RECKONING
BECAUSE OF A SECOND ROW SHORTAGE AT HIS CLUB.
Last summer it looked as
though Jenkins and his Exeter
University teammate Chris
Tshiunza would form an even
more formidable boiler room
partnership at the heart of the
Welsh scrum than they had
done before. With another eight
players returning for a second
year it looked as though Wales
would be strong.
But Tshiunza got elevated into
the Wales senior squad last
Autumn, won two caps as a
teenager and then got picked
for the senior Six Nations. That
meant Exeter Chiefs lost him to
Wales, Jonny Hill to England and
Sam Skinner and Jonny Gray to
Scotland.
The next cab off the rank at
Sandy Park for Rob Baxter was
the 19-year-old Jenkins. Having
made his Chiefs debut in the
Premiership Rugby Cup against
Bristol Bears in the first half of
the season, within weeks he
got his first taste of Heineken
Champions Cup and Gallagher
Premiership action.
Last month he started four
successive Premiership matches
against Wasps, Gloucester,
Newcastle Falcons and
Northampton Saints and now
has more than 300 minutes of
senior rugby under his belt this
year after helping his side bag
16 out of a possible 20 points
playing in tandem with Jannes
Kirsten.
It was bitter sweet for Jenkins
as club success came at a
price as he saw his Wales U20
teammates fall to two defeats
in their first three championship
matches.
Thank you for your support | Diolch am eich cefnogaeth
“It was a bit weird getting the
chance to pay in the senior side
at Exeter so early in my career. I
looked across in one of my first
line-outs and saw I was playing
against Joe Launchbury in the
Wasps game,” said Jenkins.
“I had grown up watching him
on TV playing for his club and
England and there he was
lining up against me on my
full Premiership debut. It was a
challenge I was really looking
forward to and every week since
then I’ve learned something
new playing against some
great players.”
Baxter had no qualms about
blooding the 6ft 7in, 17st 11lbs
Jenkins. He’d seen the potential
and output of Tshiunza and has
had the same from his Wales
U20 partner. Perhaps in the not
too distant future they will be
packing down together for both
club and country.
Jenkins, the son of former Wales
A, Swansea, Neath and Llanelli
back row man Hywel Jenkins,
launched his rugby career at
Hartpury College. He missed out
on U18 honours due to COVID,
but revealed his true potential in
last year’s U20 Six Nations.
He is a year behind Tshiunza on
the Sports Science course at
Exeter University and spent most
of the first half of the season
playing in BUCS Super Rugby.
Now his plans have changed, his
sights and ambitions have been
raised to a different level.
“It was a difficult decision to
opt out of the Wales U20 squad
because I’d been so looking
forward to representing my
country again this year. It was
hard watching the lads get
beaten in Ireland in the first
fixture,” said Jenkins.
“Chris and I could have been
playing in that game. He
unfortunately picked up a
hamstring injury that ruled him
out of the senior Six Nations
and I got the chance to play for
the Chiefs.
“We get on very well and he
helps me out with some of my
work at Uni because he’s already
been through the first year. It
would be great for us both to go
on to play together at the Chiefs
and for Wales in the future.
“That is definitely the plan and I
hope I might get the chance to
play for Wales U20 this summer
in whatever tournament is
created to take the place of the
World Junior Championships.”
After losing to the Irish, Alex
Mann’s Welsh side recovered
to beat Scotland at home
before going down to England
in Doncaster. Last night they
met France in Colwyn Bay and
will complete their campaign
against Italy, also at Parc Eirias,
on Sunday, 20 March (2.00pm
kick-off).
TONIGHT'S OPPOSITION
EVERYTHING STILL
TO PLAY FOR
France enter this evening’s round four
clash of the U20 Six Nations against
Wales knowing a win will put them in a
strong position to pick pocket Ireland for
championship glory.
Tonight’s visitors to Parc Eirias lost 16-17 to
Ireland in round two but bounced back with
a convincing victory against Scotland last
time out, having repelled the challenge of
Italy with ease in round one.
France will be hoping England do them a
huge favour by beating the men in green
at Stonex Stadium this evening. Ireland
currently head the table with 14 points but
England and France will still have ambitions
of preventing the Irish side from claiming
the honours, as they share second place just
three points behind. So the championship
isn’t a forgone conclusion by any stretch of
the imagination,
The French haven’t been afraid to tinker
with team selection during the campaign,
having made seven changes to the team
that lost to Ireland in Round 2 for their trip
to Scotland.
Looking to bounce back from their narrow
17-16 defeat at home to Ireland, Les Bleuets
made things difficult for themselves, but
ended up with a comfortable 30-17 at
Dam Health Stadium in Edinburgh despite
finishing the game with just 13 players.
Winger Jefferson Joseph was sent off
for a head on head collision with Robin
McClintock after just 13 minutes, but that
did not halt France, who scored a series
of excellent tries and won in style despite
being down a man for over 65 minutes
before Jules Coulon was also sent off with
10 minutes to go.
Tries from Esteban Capilla, Louis Le Brun,
Emilien Gailleton and Connor Sa saw
France recover from their defeat to Ireland
a fortnight earlier, while Scotland suffered
their third consecutive loss.
