I could then help them infinding the department they had to visit. I became very familiarwith the location of most of the clinics at the Royal Surrey,Guildford. I was also fairly adept in finding the department atthe other large hospitals. I usually left the patient where theywere in order to have coffee or even lunch, being a regularvisitor to the restaurant at the RSCH. On one occasion apatient had to spend all day at St. Mary's, Portsmouth so Iwalked to Fratton Station and caught a train into centralPortsmouth, spending some time there. It being Winter it wasdark for the journey home.I was interested in the article relating to Bramshott and LiphookVoluntary Care in the 50th Anniversary edition of the “CommunityMagazine” as I was a driver for the group for many years.I started in April 1989, having retired from full time work. I stillworked part-time but could choose which days I worked so thismeant that I was available to take people to various medicalappointments. Most of them did not have cars and some whodid were not allowed to drive them because of the treatmentthey were having.When I volunteered I was visited by Harry Haskell, the chairmanat that time. He was also Parish Council Chairman and involvedwith various groups in the village, mainly involving elderlypeople. His service to the community is, of course, recognisedin the name ‘The Haskell Centre’. He explained to me theduties involved and also, obviously, came to vet my suitability.The work involved driving clients to various destinations, somelocal, others more distant. I preferred the longer journeysbecause it meant setting aside a whole half day of even a fullday. To do a short journey in the middle of the morning orafternoon meant an interruption to a long job at home. Ofcourse, I did the short runs because the demand was there.The places I visited outside the local ones included Guildford,Portsmouth, Basingstoke, Frimley, Haslemere, Alton withoccasional trips to Southampton and Chichester. I ought tomention at this point that the group also serves Milland Parish.Most of the people I transported were friendly and appreciativeof the service available. The most difficult patient I encounteredwas a retired naval officer resident at Ludshott Manor when itwas a care home. He wanted me to take him to the X-raydepartment at RSCH and seemed to think that I could drive himinto it (try that sometime!). I explained that this was not possiblebut I could push him in a wheel chair. He was not very pleasedbut we parted on good terms so, presumably, he had a goodresult from the X-ray.When I completed 20 years of service, Chris Leadbetter and Iwere presented with book tokens by David Lush (the then chair)in recognition of our service for Voluntary Care. A reporttogether with a photo was published in the “Petersfield Post”(the photo is reproduced above).My last journey for Voluntary Care was in March 2019 when,early on a Monday morning, I had to take a patient to the A&Eat RSCH, a department I did not visit very much and, ironically,in the evening found myself a patient in the same department.I had fallen at home and broken a hip.So, after 30 years’ service it was suggested that, although I wasstill driving, the time had come for me to retire from VoluntaryCare work.In a different, but similar context, at the same time I had to giveup delivering the “Community Magazine”.
