expanded THR research focus
The Texas Health
Resources Board of
Trustees recently
endorsed recommendations to
broaden research and education
efforts within THR following
a yearlong evaluation of THR
research activity.
The recommendations include
new leadership for Texas Health
Research Institute. Grant
Cooper & Associates of St.
Louis, a leader in health care
executive search consulting,
has been engaged to help
recruit a new THRI president.
A name change for THRI, and
formation of a new board, are
also planned in support of the
expanded research focus.
Current research efforts will
continue, including clinical
trials and product evaluation
and testing services. Renewed
emphasis will be placed on
research focused on key clinical
services and populationbased
research. Additionally,
a clearinghouse for research
opportunities will be established
to support investigators in

interactive, module-based CME
resource, which was funded by
a grant from Kimberly-Clark.
The course features high-quality

part of the module.

On Oct. 26, 2004, Leadership Council members assembled at The
Gaylord Texan Resort in Grapevine to hear Richard Beech, M.D.
discuss “Orthopedic Surgery: Then, Now and Tomorrow.” Dr. Beech,
a surgeon trainer for DePuy Orthopedics, Johnson & Johnson,

April 2005: Nasher Sculpture Center
Robert M. Levy, M.D., Ph.D. was the guest speaker at the April 12
Leadership Council meeting at the Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas.
Dr. Levy, a renowned neurosurgeon at Northwestern Memorial Hospital
in Chicago and professor of neurological surgery and physiology at the
Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University, spoke about
some of the innovative work being done in the field of neuromodulation.
A treatment that began with the advent of pacemakers for heart
conditions, implantable neurostimulation devices are now being
considered and tested for the treatment of obesity, mental conditions
and other conditions originating within the brain.

from Emory University in Atlanta.
He served as an executive board member of the Circle
Ten Council, Boy Scouts of America, and he belongs to
Trinity Episcopal Church.
Robert and his wife Toni have three children and live in
Addison. He enjoys golf, hunting and fishing.
Tommy A. Valenta

Tommy was born in Houston,
completed high school in Wichita
Falls and graduated from Midwestern
State University with a bachelor’s
degree in business. He also holds a
master of business administration
degree from Southern Methodist
University. Tommy serves on the board of directors of
the American Institute of Steel Construction and the
Steel Manufacturers Association, and is an associate
board member for the SMU Cox School of Business.
He is active in his church, Episcopal Church of the
Epiphany.
Tommy and his wife Lana live in Dallas and have three
children. He enjoys golf, boating, travel and “spoiling
grandchildren.”
Greg Biggs

a sponsor for the Austin Street Homeless Shelter in
Dallas.
Greg has two children and lives in Plano.
Holland Fleming Walsh

Dallas with his wife Catherine and young son Benjamin.

College of Healthcare Architects, and Diplomate in the
American College of Healthcare Executives.
Craig and his wife Julie have two children and reside in
Dallas. An Elder at Highland Park Presbyterian Church,
he enjoys golf, reading, travel and classic Jaguars.
