HeatherPoundsPagánisanover-comerwhohasusedherpasttobuildupherfuture.Heather
wasenslavedtoalifestyleofsexualexploitation,drugs,homelesnes,abandonment,abuse,and
hopelesnesfor18+years.In2008,HeatherwassentencedtotheSouthCarolinaDepartment
ofCorectionswheresheservedtwoyearsandwascompletelytransformed.Whileincarcerated,
Heatherfoundthatthistimecouldbeatimeofhopeforher;atimewhereshecouldbeginto
rebuildherself.Shebegantosubmergeherselfinbiblestudies,volunteerworkatthechapel,and
otherlifegrouprelatedactivities.ThisiswhereHeatherstartedtobuildherhopeinknowingthat
whensheleftthebarsofSCDC,shewouldneverhavetoreturnagain.
In2010whenHeatherwasreleased,shebegantogetinvolvedinhercommunitybydoing
outreachwork,serviceworkinherarea,speakingtoyouthandyoungadultsaboutmakinggood
choicesandempoweringthem toalsomakeadiferenceintheirowncommunities.Heatherhas
apasiontoserveandtoencourageothersbyherownpersonalstoryofbeinghealedand
deliveredthroughtheworkingpowerofJesusChrist.Shehasdedicatedherlifetoimpactthose
whom sheisaround,bringingthem hopethattheytoocanmakeadiference.Overthelastnine
yearsHeatherhasbeenakeynotespeakerformanyorganizations.Inthepastshehasworked

childrenthatpediatricianDr.JacquelineW.Stewartopenedin
1990—ithasbecomealifelineformanyfamilies.
Dr.Stewartsstates,“Iwasseeingparentswhowereconcerned
abouthavingtobalanceworkandparenting,particularlywhentheir
childrenwouldbesick.“Parentswouldsay,‘Ifmychildhasone
moreearinfection,IcouldlosemyjoborIhavetousemyvacation
time.’Herorganizationgivesscholarshipstothosewhocan’taford
thetuition.Afterseeingparentswithspecial-needschildren,she
expandedherservicesandestablishedanotherprogram—Mision
Hugs.MisionHugshelpstomeettheneedsoffamilieswith
limitedfundsandchildrenneedingextraequipmentandmedicine.
Dr.Stewartgraduatedfrom WestfieldHighSchoolinFairfield,Alabama.Shecontinuedher
educationatTuskegeeUniversity,wheresheearnedabachelor’sdegreeinbiologywithachemistry
minor.
Aftergraduatingfrom Tuskegeein1969,shegotmariedandhadherson,Maurice.Dr.Stewartis
mariedtoDr.GeorgeW.Stewart.Herfaithandfamilyhavestrengthenedherthroughseveral
chalenges.Sheisabreastcancersurvivorandcompleted16treatmentswithoutmisingadayof
work.She’salsohadaheartatack.
WhileworkinginalaboratoryasamedicaltechnologistatNolandHospitalinFairfield,Stewart
enroledinmedicalschoolattheUniversityofAlabamaatBirmingham.Shegraduatedwithher
DoctorofMedicinedegreein1973.
Aswitheverythingaroundtheglobe,theCOVID-19pandemichascauseddisruptionsforHugs
andKises.Notmanypeopleneededsickdaycareservicesbecausethepandemicmeantmore
parentscouldworkfrom home.Nevertheles,withthehelpoffundraisersandotherorganizations,
shecontinuestomeettheneedsofchildren.ShealsoservesaspresidentoftheNational
AsociationofSickChildDaycare.
Dr.JacquelineW.Stewart’sfaithhaskepthergoingbecauseshebelievesGodhasapurposefor
