After a long, snowy winter, we are all looking forward to 

spending some peaceful time in at the beautiful lakes,

Creates Modern Kitchen 

with a Scandinavian Style

Fiona and Justin called their previous kitchen a 

“nightmare.” Their house was built in 1964 and 

the kitchen had not changed much since then, 

with a laundry room on one side and a small dining 

area on the other. 

“The former owner tried to renovate it herself, and was 

even using a dresser to store the cutlery,“ says Justin. 

“We knew we had to do something about it.” 

Kitchen Cabinet Solutions had renovated the kitchen in 

the couple’s previous home and had done such a good 

job that they decided to contact them. 

Fiona and Justin took their wish list to Stacey 

Lawrence, designer at Kitchen Cabinet Solutions. 

In consultations, it was decided to take out a wall, 

fill in some windows, and open up the space to 

include the laundry and dining areas. Once extensive 

measurements were taken, Stacey developed a design, 

which, after a few back and forths, was ready to go. 

Justin’s background is Scandinavian and he wanted to 

incorporate that feel into the kitchen, which they have 

done with the natural maple Shaker-style cabinets and 

the hickory hardwood flooring, purchased from Focus 

Flooring, and installed by Against the Grain Renovation 

and Construction who opened up the space and 

renovated the house. 

“I love that Justin and Fiona went with natural wood, 

which adds such a nice warmth,” says Stacey. “The 

kitchen is an attractive mix of traditional elements with 

modern influences. The kitchen has lots of roll-outs 

beside the fridge and pantry, and a sea of drawers on 

another wall. With the microwave tucked under the 

cabinets, there’s so much more counter and storage 

space compared to before.” 

In the couple’s kitchen in their previous home, they 

appreciated their floor-to-ceiling cabinets, so they 

wanted to incorporate those into this one, with 

multiple pull-out drawers for dry goods, pots and

more. In a nod to tradition, crown moulding tops the 

cabinets where they meet the ceiling. 

The extensive white Quartz counter extends 

throughout the kitchen, with a tech hub at one end 

away from the main counter area, with electrical 

outlets and a USB port in which to charge phones and 

other devices. 

The 10 ft. x 4 ft. island has room for four stools on one 

side with a 1 ft. long overhang over five cabinets to 

add more storage space. On the other side are pullouts 

for garbage and recycling. 

“The fresh blue colour of the island is an attractive 

complement to the natural tones of the cabinets,” says 

Stacey. “The island is family-friendly with a spot for 

kids to prep food when they want to help, far away 

from the stove.” 

“Our new kitchen is night and day compared with the 

old one,” says Justin. “Kitchen Cabinet Solutions went

– I love the open concept which still feels cozy, ” 

says Fiona. “Justin can move around easily when he’s

“Lakes” Model Brings the Outside In 


After enjoying spending time at a friend’s 

cottage in Haliburton, Mark was inspired to 

look into a vacation home for his own family, 

feeling that the time was right to experience cottage 

life. 

Friends recommended Mark and his wife, Frannie 

to local real estate agent, Jeff Wilson who was from 

Haliburton. When they were unable to find a “turn-key” 

cottage that they liked, Jeff suggested looking for a lot 

and building new. He introduced them to a 10 acre 

property on Lipsy Lake.

“The lot boasted a southwest exposure and large water 

frontage, on a small, quiet lake - it was perfect,” says 

Mark. 

Mark envisioned a rustic log home on this treed lot 

with a large granite wall on one side of the property. 

Jeff was building his own custom log Discovery Dream 

Home and recommended Kirk Figueira. 

“We appreciated Kirk taking us to visit other finished 

Discovery homes, and along with the walk-through 3D 

visualizations, we had a good sense of what we wanted

radiant heating, with both a gas and wood burning 

fireplace.” 

“Kirk was with us every step of the way during the 

build, and still is long after completion,” says Frannie.

When Nancy and Rene built their open 

concept home on the water 15 years ago, 

there was only enough space for a galley 

kitchen. Over the years, however, it became clear to 

them that the tiny kitchen wasn’t sufficient for their 

needs, especially now that they were thinking of 

retiring there. For years they had rented it out for 

summer vacation getaways as a cottage. 

“We needed a larger kitchen with an island for food 

prep and entertaining, and decided we should remove 

a small bedroom to increase the space,” says Nancy. 

They went with Cabinetree for the project, as they 

were happy with the kitchen renovation that the 

company had done at their home. 

“I knew I wanted a clean, modern, yet warm look, with 

floating shelves, an island and a bar area,” continues 

Nancy. “I knew that Cabinetree could pull it off.” 

Nancy met with designer Laurel Angel at Cabinetree to 

discuss their ideas. Laurel then drew up the plans and 

sent in their crew to take measurements. 

Laurel helped Nancy select high-gloss white Thermofoil 

cabinets with slab-style doors. They chose a wood 

grain melamine as the accent material for the island, 

bar and floating shelves. The stainless steel handles 

complement the appliances. Durable white quartz 

countertops with subtle veining helps pull together the 

clean look that Nancy wanted. 

The same Quartz countertop is used on the island 

and features a waterfall edge on one end. The island 

is large enough to accommodate seating while still 

maximizing storage on the working side of the 

kitchen. It’s constructed of a wood grain melamine 

that is easy to maintain and manufactured right at 

Cabinetree. The island cabinets have lots of space for 

dishes, pots, and pans, along with a recycling 

and garbage pullout. 

The bar area at the end of the room features additional 

counter space with roll-out drawers below so that 

supplies are easily accessible. 

“We love our new kitchen – everything is handy and 

easy to clean up,” says Nancy. “We enjoy sitting around 

the island while food prep is going on – I don’t think 

I’d change anything about it.” 

“The kitchen now has a fresh modern look with clean 

lines, lots of natural light and provides a functional 

layout.” says Laurel. 

Laurel Angel is passionate about helping Cabinetree 

clients with the design of their new spaces. 




“When I meet with new clients, I like to talk through 

how they use a space and what their specific storage 

needs are. This helps me to determine the best layout 

and types of cabinets to incorporate into the design. 

I also ask them what doesn’t work in their current 

space. I’m deliberate about prioritizing function as 

a starting point, from there finishes and decorative 

elements can be selected to meet the individual 

client’s taste or aesthetic goals,” says Laurel. 

Prior to beginning work, Cabinetree takes detailed 

laser measurements, so they can design your layout 

to fit the space. With skilled designers on staff, they 

are able to create designs that appeal to everyone 

and fit any budget.

...clients love basement bathroom renovation 


The basement in Alexandrea and Brodie’s 

45-year old suburban home was about 25 

percent finished. They wanted to have a second 

bathroom to make better use of the unfinished utility 

and laundry rooms. 

“We loved Angela’s vision, which involved enclosing 

the water softener, sump pump and furnace in a 

closet,” he says. “She suggested moving the laundry 

area to the bottom of the stairs, which was also an 

underutilized space. We told her to go ahead.” 

“We were overwhelmed with choices when we went 

into the stores, and didn’t know where to start,” 

says Brodie. “We decided to call in Angela Jones of 

Lakeshore Designs to give us some ideas on how to 

plan the space more efficiently.” 

“When Alexandrea and Brodie requested our design 

services to help convert a basement utility room into 

a new three-piece bathroom, we were excited to 

transform a non-utilized room into a functional bath,” 

says Angela Jones, owner of Lakeshore Designs. 

Angela walked through the area, then came back with 

drawings. The Lakeshore team designed a layout that 

visually hid the utility components while ensuring the 

units remained fully accessible for maintenance, but 

not to compromise the overall look. They accomplished 

this by adding in two sets of double doors. 

Angela and her team chose soft greys and white tiles 

to create a neutral, yet elegant space that reflected the 

clients’ vision, which included a hexagonal pattern 

on the shower floor and in the shampoo niche, and 

subway tile for the shower walls. A glass door and 

heated floors added style and comfort. 

“We wanted lots of light in the bathroom, so that it 

didn’t look like a basement,” he says. 

To brighten the area, Angela selected pot lights for 

above the shower and track lights for above the vanity. 

On the exterior of the bathroom, the design and 

contracting team worked to add large-scale shiplap 

to transition the bathroom space to the laundry room 

beside the stairs. That, along with grey laminate flooring, 

integrates the areas together. The design team chose the 

vanity, towels, and artwork to complete the look.

During the pandemic, we’ve seen that many

Hundreds of Turtle Guardians of all Ages 

The Land Between’s Turtle Guardians Project 

continues to grow every year. They now have 

hundreds of guardians of all ages across the 

region helping to track, monitor and protect turtles and 

their habitats. 

“All of Ontario’s turtle populations are declining 

and here, in The Land Between, we have a hope of 

saving them,” says Leora Berman, Founder and COO. 

“Four years ago, we declared a turtle crisis and since 

then we have developed the Turtle Guardians Project 

to involve everyone, especially kids, to take actions that 

can have a direct impact on the future of turtles.” 

The Land Between is home to Eastern Musk, Spotted, 

Painted, Blanding’s, Northern Map, Snapping and 

Wood turtles. The Land Between is a unique area found 

between the Canadian Shield in the north and the St. 

Lawrence Lowlands in the south. It is what is known as 

“eco-tone” or a transition area containing features from 

both bordering regions, but also containing its own 

geology and plant and animal life. 

The Turtle Guardians Project offers several opportunities 

for individuals and families to help protect turtles and 

their habitats, which are important in that they help 

remove harmful bacteria by eating dead matter at the 

bottom of lakes and wetlands, by spreading seeds which 

in turn grow into plants that filter the water, support 

fish and create new wildlife habitat. Turtles also take 

a very long time to replace themselves in nature - 

between 30 and 60 years. Therefore, every adult turtle is 

important to maintain populations. 

A noteable fact is that turtles cannot be relocated 

or they may perish, as until the age of four they are 

making spatial memories of the routes they travel, and 

habitats they use, but after the age of four, their brain 

plasticity drops dramatically and they cannot remake 

these memories easily to find key hibernation sites or 

food areas. 

Road Researchers adopt a section of a road to monitor 

turtles by walking, cycling, or driving on it regularly 

to monitor and help turtles in high mortality zones. 

Wetland Watchers are individuals or families who adopt 

a wetland, to make lists of the turtles and other wildlife 

they see, monitoring it once a month to record their 

observations. 

Nest Sitters look after nesting turtles to ensure their 

safety. The Land Between provides online training in 

how to protect the nests. Phragmites Fighters help to 

eradicate this aggressive, invasive European grass that 

damages wetland and lake ecosystems and chokes out 

native plants, fish, and wildlife, including turtles. 

The Land Between is a charity dedicated to protecting 

and stewarding this special bioregion of the same 

name which encompasses much of the Kawarthas.

What is Food Security and its Root Causes 

Food is essential for our very existence. It is also 

the topic of many reality television competition 

shows, magazines, the foundation of travel 

experiences, social media hashtags. It is so embedded 

in our daily existence that it might be hard to image not 

having choice of, or connect to, food. 

Community food security “is achieved when all people, 

at all times, have physical and economic access to safe, 

sufficient, and nutritious foods that meets their dietary 

and personal preference for an active and healthy 

lifestyle.” 

Food security is based on the fundamental human 

right to food. Being able to feed oneself either directly 

from natural resources of the land or to buy food that 

has been cultivated by another involves the elements 

of availability, accessibility, and adequacy. Availability 

has to do with food being physically present and 

available. Accessibility describes food being attainable 

by all population groups without discrimination and 

affordable to everyone without having to sacrifice other 

basic needs such as housing. Adequacy speaks to the 

need of food to meet individual dietary demands, to 

be safe for human consumption and to reflect cultural 

preferences. 

While it may seem logical to conclude that the opposite 

to food security is food insecurity, it is not. In our
