ANDREW BRUCE | SOUND DESIGN<br />
Andrew Bruce is the chairman and owner of the Autograph Sound group of<br />
companies, which design and supply theatrical productions <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g Les<br />
Misérables, The Wizard of Oz, Love Never Dies, Million Dollar Quartet, Mamma<br />
Mia! and Priscilla. Appo<strong>in</strong>ted sound consultant on the orig<strong>in</strong>al version of Les<br />
Misérables, he went on to design for the 1985 London production. His other<br />
credits <strong>in</strong>clude the orig<strong>in</strong>al West End production of Song and Dance, Chess,<br />
Follies, Into the Woods, City of Angels, Mart<strong>in</strong> Guerre, Witches of Eastwick,<br />
Mamma Mia!, Miss Saigon, 125th Street, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Mary Popp<strong>in</strong>s<br />
(English National Opera), Sweeney Todd (The Royal Opera) and Seven Deadly<br />
S<strong>in</strong>s and Isadora (The Royal Ballet). In 2009, <strong>in</strong> collaboration with Nick<br />
Lidster, Mr. Bruce designed Mother Courage and her Children (National Theatre)<br />
which was nom<strong>in</strong>ated for an Olivier Award. He recently designed The Drowsy<br />
Chaperone (Gatehouse Theatre).<br />
THE NATIONAL BALLET OF CANADA<br />
One of the world’s top <strong>in</strong>ternational ballet companies, The National Ballet<br />
of Canada was founded <strong>in</strong> 1951 by Celia Franca. A company of 70 dancers<br />
with its own orchestra, the National Ballet has been led by Artistic Director<br />
Karen Ka<strong>in</strong>, one of the greatest baller<strong>in</strong>as of her generation, s<strong>in</strong>ce 2005.<br />
Renowned for its diverse repertoire the company performs traditional<br />
full-length classics, embraces contemporary work and encourages the<br />
creation of new ballets and the development of Canadian choreographers.<br />
The company’s repertoire <strong>in</strong>cludes works by Sir Frederick Ashton, George<br />
Balanch<strong>in</strong>e, John Cranko, William Forsythe, James Kudelka, Jirˇí Kylián,<br />
Wayne McGregor, John Neumeier, Rudolf Nureyev, Alexei Ratmansky,<br />
Glen Tetley and Christopher Wheeldon. The National Ballet of Canada<br />
will tour Alice’s Adventures <strong>in</strong> Wonderland to the John F. Kennedy <strong>Center</strong><br />
for the Perform<strong>in</strong>g Arts <strong>in</strong> Wash<strong>in</strong>gton, D.C <strong>in</strong> January 2013 and Alexei<br />
Ratmansky’s Romeo and Juliet, created to celebrate the company’s 60th<br />
anniversary, to Sadler’s Wells Theatre <strong>in</strong> London, England <strong>in</strong> April 2013.<br />

KAREN KAIN | ARTISTIC DIRECTOR, THE NATIONAL BALLET OF CANADA<br />
Long recognized as one of the most gifted classical dancers of her era,<br />
noted for her compell<strong>in</strong>g characterizations and versatility as a performer,<br />
Artistic Director Karen Ka<strong>in</strong> is one of Canada’s most renowned and<br />
committed advocates for the arts. Born <strong>in</strong> Hamilton, Ontario, Ms. Ka<strong>in</strong><br />
received her tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g at Canada’s National Ballet School <strong>in</strong> Toronto,<br />
jo<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g The National Ballet of Canada <strong>in</strong> 1969. She was quickly promoted<br />
to Pr<strong>in</strong>cipal Dancer with the company after her sensational debut as the<br />
Swan Queen <strong>in</strong> Swan Lake. In 1971, Ms. Ka<strong>in</strong> was awarded the Silver<br />
Medal <strong>in</strong> the Women’s Category at the prestigious International Ballet<br />
Competition <strong>in</strong> Moscow and, along with her frequent partner at the<br />
time, Frank Augustyn, received a special prize for Best Pas de Deux.<br />
Subsequently, she embarked on a remarkable <strong>in</strong>ternational career dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />
which she performed many of ballet’s greatest roles with such companies<br />
as Paris Opéra Ballet, Roland Petit’s Le Ballet de Marseilles, the Bolshoi<br />

Ballet, London Festival Ballet and Vienna State Opera Ballet. Throughout<br />
her career she also developed a close creative partnership with Rudolf<br />
Nureyev and often performed with him. A favourite of some of the world’s<br />
most prom<strong>in</strong>ent choreographers, she premiered many new and important<br />
works dur<strong>in</strong>g her time as a dancer. Ms. Ka<strong>in</strong> retired from danc<strong>in</strong>g follow<strong>in</strong>g a<br />
farewell tour <strong>in</strong> 1997 and took up the position of Artist-<strong>in</strong>-Residence with the<br />
National Ballet, a role that was later expanded to that of Artistic Associate. In<br />
2004, she restaged Rudolf Nureyev’s landmark version of The Sleep<strong>in</strong>g Beauty<br />
for the company and the follow<strong>in</strong>g year was named Artistic Director. Ms. Ka<strong>in</strong><br />
has received many Canadian and <strong>in</strong>ternational awards throughout her career,<br />
testify<strong>in</strong>g to her accomplishments both as an artist and an advocate for the<br />
arts. She is a Companion of the Order of Canada, the first Canadian recipient<br />
of the Cartier Lifetime Achievement Award and was named an Officer of the<br />
Order of Arts and Letters by the Government of France. In 1997, Ms. Ka<strong>in</strong> was<br />
honoured with a Governor General’s National Arts Centre Award and received<br />
a Governor General’s Award for Lifetime Artistic Achievement <strong>in</strong> 2002. From<br />
2004 to 2008, she was Chair of the Canada Council for the Arts. In 2007, she<br />
was presented with the Barbara Hamilton Memorial Award for demonstrat<strong>in</strong>g<br />
excellence and professionalism <strong>in</strong> the perform<strong>in</strong>g arts. In 2008, the Karen<br />
Ka<strong>in</strong> School for the Arts officially opened, a tribute to Ms. Ka<strong>in</strong>’s ongo<strong>in</strong>g<br />
contributions to the cultural life of her country, and <strong>in</strong> 2011, Ms. Ka<strong>in</strong> was<br />
honoured by the International Society for the Perform<strong>in</strong>g Arts with the<br />
Dist<strong>in</strong>guished Artist Award.<br />
DAVID BRISKIN | MUSIC DIRECTOR AND PRINCIPAL CONDUCTOR,<br />
THE NATIONAL BALLET OF CANADA<br />
One of the foremost ballet conductors at work today, David Brisk<strong>in</strong> is renowned<br />
for the scope of his repertoire and the depth and beauty of his <strong>in</strong>terpretations.<br />
Whether <strong>in</strong> the classical or contemporary idiom, from works steeped <strong>in</strong><br />
tradition to cutt<strong>in</strong>g edge modern compositions, Mr. Brisk<strong>in</strong> br<strong>in</strong>gs a sure hand<br />
and a sensitive understand<strong>in</strong>g to the dramatic and choreographic life of the<br />
music he conducts. Before jo<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g The National Ballet of Canada <strong>in</strong> 2006, Mr.<br />
Brisk<strong>in</strong> served as conductor with American Ballet Theatre <strong>in</strong> New York City for<br />
seven years, direct<strong>in</strong>g performances at the Metropolitan Opera House, City<br />
<strong>Center</strong> and numerous ballet and opera houses around the world. In demand as<br />
a guest conductor, Mr. Brisk<strong>in</strong> has worked most recently with such companies<br />
as New York City Ballet and San Francisco Ballet. Later this season, he will<br />
make his debut at Covent Garden <strong>in</strong> London conduct<strong>in</strong>g The Royal Ballet. He<br />
has appears with The Joffrey Ballet of Chicago, Houston Ballet, Les Grands<br />
Ballets Canadiens de Montréal and Alberta Ballet, among others. For three<br />
seasons, Mr. Brisk<strong>in</strong> served as <strong>Music</strong> Director of Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre and<br />
was Conductor for The Juilliard School’s Dance Division from 1993 to 2005. In<br />
2008, Mr. Brisk<strong>in</strong> was appo<strong>in</strong>ted Assistant Professor and Director of Orchestral<br />
Studies at the University of Toronto, Faculty of <strong>Music</strong>. Mr. Brisk<strong>in</strong>’s versatility<br />
has also seen him conduct symphony and opera productions throughout the<br />
Americas, Europe and Asia, with such orchestras as the Pittsburgh, Detroit,<br />
Baltimore, Indianapolis and W<strong>in</strong>dsor Symphony Orchestras, the Shanghai<br />
Symphony Orchestra and the National Symphony Orchestra of Costa Rica,<br />
and with such opera companies as Calgary Opera, Manitoba Opera, Opera<br />
Carol<strong>in</strong>a, Lake George Opera and Sarasota Opera. In addition, he served for<br />
six years as <strong>Music</strong> Director of the Masterwork Chorus and Orchestra <strong>in</strong> New<br />
York. Mr. Brisk<strong>in</strong> attended the prestigious Indiana University School of <strong>Music</strong><br />
and received a Bachelor of <strong>Music</strong> Degree <strong>in</strong> Orchestral conduct<strong>in</strong>g from the<br />
University of C<strong>in</strong>c<strong>in</strong>nati College-Conservatory of <strong>Music</strong> and a Master’s Degree<br />
from Queens College, City University of New York.<br />
ERNEST ABUGOV | STAGE MANAGER<br />
Ernest (Ernie) Abugov has served as Stage Manager of The National<br />
Ballet of Canada s<strong>in</strong>ce 1973, work<strong>in</strong>g with every Artistic Director <strong>in</strong> the<br />
company’s history from Celia Franca to Karen Ka<strong>in</strong>. He has traveled with<br />
the company all over the world tour<strong>in</strong>g to Israel, Asia, Europe, Mexico<br />
and throughout North America. Mr. Abugov has worked with many of<br />
the world’s most renowned choreographers who have created orig<strong>in</strong>al<br />
works for the National Ballet <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g Alexei Ratmansky, John Neumeier,<br />
William Forsythe and Glen Tetley. Mr. Abugov was born <strong>in</strong> Montréal,<br />
Québec. Before beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g his long association with the National Ballet,<br />
he worked with Les Feux Follets, The Charlottetown Festival, La<br />
Poudriere Theatre and The Studio Lab Theatre. He worked at Expo ’67<br />
<strong>in</strong> Montréal, stage manag<strong>in</strong>g over 4000 puppet shows. Mr. Abugov also<br />
toured with Harry Belafonte. In what little spare time that he has, Mr.<br />
Abugov guest-lectures to theatre students.<br />
JEFF MORRIS | STAGE MANAGER<br />
Born <strong>in</strong> Toronto, Jeff Morris studied technical theatre production and<br />
adm<strong>in</strong>istration at Ryerson’s Theatre School. After leav<strong>in</strong>g Ryerson, he<br />
became Production Stage Manager for Toronto Dance Theatre (1990<br />
– 1995). With Toronto Dance Theatre he toured extensively, stage<br />
manag<strong>in</strong>g the company’s debuts <strong>in</strong> Berl<strong>in</strong>, Warsaw, Beij<strong>in</strong>g, Tokyo and<br />
at the Joyce Theater, New York City. He was Production Stage Manager<br />
for Dancers For Life (AIDS Committee of Toronto, 1991 – 1997), Stage<br />
Manager for Theatre Passe-Muraille (Never Swim Alone, Metamorphosis<br />
of a Shadow) and for the Fr<strong>in</strong>ge Festival of Independent Dance Artists.<br />
Mr. Morris jo<strong>in</strong>ed The National Ballet of Canada <strong>in</strong> 1995 and has s<strong>in</strong>ce<br />
stage-managed a wide range of the company’s unique classical and<br />
