Support Services Social Committee Newsletter
Issue: 2
WELCOME
Welcome to the support services social committee newsletter. This committee was set up in response to the staff
survey feedback noting that support staff would like more opportunity to meet others working in support services
roles. A number of events have already happened but we hope to use this newsletter to notify you of upcoming
events or activities. You can also follow us at http://www2.imperial.ac.uk/blog/supportservicessocialcommittee.
If you have any suggestions please contact one of the committee members or Amy Cosgrove
a.cosgrove@imperial.ac.uk
We look forward to seeing you at one of our events.
SCIENCE MUSEUM LATES
When I first joined Imperial, I had visions of myself whiling away my lunch hours in the Exhibition Road museums.
Although, as I’m sure most of us are, I’m guilty of making it there very infrequently. The Support Services Social
Committee trip to the Science Museum Lates seemed a perfect excuse not only to take in a bit of South Kensington
culture, but also to socialise and unwind with my Imperial colleagues (a deal made even sweeter when served with
a glass of wine).
At the museum we were let loose among the exhibits with countless buttons to press and levers to pull. The Science
Museum had a lively buzz about the place as grown adults rediscovered their childish urges to prod, poke and
wonder over the many experiments and exhibits on offer.
By the time the evening was through I had seen rockets take off, played the glockenspiel in a rendition of Gustav
Holst’s The Planets and learnt that Sir Isaac Newton invented the cat-flap! Not bad for a mid-week evening. On
Friday 27 th July, the Support Services Social Committee will be running a trip to the V&A Lates.
QUEENS TOWER VISITS
The thing I like best about the Queens Tower (QT) trips is that they open up a
building we see daily. Although it may seem a mystery, the real reason for the lack
of general access is that there is a narrow single staircase. (For this reason it may
be best to avoid if you suffer from vertigo or claustrophobia.) There are also 326
steps, but don’t let this put you off! The views over London and its many famous
landmarks are breathtaking and people should definitely bring their cameras
along. You’ll also learn a little about the QT’s history and be given a handout with
more information to take away if you are interested in finding out more.
It’s also great for meeting new people and giving yourself a break! We’ll be going
up again on 24 August and 14 Sept so do sign up if you’re interested, it’ll be great
to see you there!
Kim Winter, Projects Planning Manager
If you’d like to arrange a trip for your team, there is the possibility of organising an
early evening event. Please contact Amy Cosgrove for more information.
Insights this month to a very
positive response! If you have
any new starters in your
department, why not invite
them to one of our events?
You may remember from our June newsletter that some of our senior managers have volunteered to come and work in
your departments and see how things really happen! Those that have signed up so far are:
Jane Neary, Director of Commercial Services
Richard Martin, Faculty Operating Officer for Engineering
Lynne Cox, Director of the Research Office
Matt Lee, Departmental Manager for Medicine
If you would like to invite one of the above managers to visit your area then please send an email to Louise Lindsey
(l.lindsay@imperial.ac.uk) with your name, the suggested activities you would like to share and, if you have a
preference, which volunteer manager from the above list you would like to visit your department. All the managers have
indicated a willingness to consider any job in any area, both inside and outside of their own departments.
