Self-guided Snorkel Trails

Snorkel Trail
In mid-2012 two Snorkel Trails in Nelly Bay
and Geoffrey Bay were established by Dr Rick
Braley and TOBMI (Tourism Operators and
Businesses Magnetic Island). These are selfguided
trails use surface floats with handles to
mark out the trails, and sub-surface floats with
large acrylic letters designate points of interest.
The Geoffrey Bay Trail is close to the Moltke
wreck, and a WWII propeller and engine block.
Water resistant Swim Cards which you attach
to your wrist, have specific information related
to each trail. The Cards outline which species of
fish and coral you are likely to see at each location,
and specifically at each float that you pass,
including the 100kg aquacultured giant clams!
The cards also show you how to find the
Moltke wreck, giant clams, fish, and the WWII
aeroplane propeller with some accuracy.
Your $5 donation for the use of these cards
supports the ongoing costs of insurance
and maintenance of the trails. These cards
can be recycled after use by leaving them in
the drop box at the start of each trail.
