Dear visitors and friends of Chalki,
you make a difference !
You are spending your holidays on the Island of Chalki
because – among other reasons – it has kept its natural
beauty, the charm of its old houses and the crystal clear
water. Goats, sheep, chicken, pigeons, dogs and cats are
part of the oecolocical balance of the island. But where have
the cats gone ? Only some years ago they assembled on
the harbourfront in wait of incoming fi sher boats and of their
share of the fi sh. This does not exist anymore. Those cats
which survive illnesses and poisoning – even the neutered
ones – need your help.
What can you do ?
• You can help by convincing your Greek friends and
acquaintainces of how important the protection of animals
is for you and your well-being on the Island.
• You can help by offering your yard or garden to the Animal
Help Societies, to ensure the safe feeding of cats in winter.
• You can help by sponsoring our work by transferring
money to our Bank Account and by putting money into the
piggy bank at Zifos` Travel Agency or at the Hotel.
What we do?
Our aims and options
Protection and ethical treatment of the animals and
education of the people Every year, many animals on the
island must die because of illness, malnutrition, injuries or
killing actions in winter. Via a yearly letter to every inhabitant
of Chalki we inform about the fact that all animals contribute
to the ecological balance and perform an important
function, which has great importance for the tourism. With
English books about animals we support English lessons
for the school children, we provide learning material about
cats and dogs for school lessons.
Feeding: Securing suffi cient food for free living cats in
winter and in times of low tourism at protected feeding spots.
Donations for the buying of food are urgently asked for.
Neutering program and medical aid has started in
February 2010 and will be continued in October. By such
we try to prevent uncontrolled procreation and killing actions
resulting thereof. The veterinarians will also take care
of injured animals and of farm animals in poor or critical
conditions.
Who are we ? The „Animal Help Chalki” is a non-profi t
association which works for the welfare of animals,
especially of cats and dogs on the island of Chalki (Halki)/
Dodekanes, founded 2008. Its members engage themselves
in their protection and ethical keeping. We cooperate
with the Animal Welfare Society “Filosoikos Syllogos
Chalkis”, founded in 2007. The members are residents in
Chalki from Greece and various foreign countries, as well
as visitors and friends of the island.
