This tour to France was such a thrill as no one had been able to travel for nearly two years and was as much about allowing the squad to bond as it was about rugby development. On our return, we scraped home in a very tense league semi-final against Pres Bray and it was a similar story in the final where we edged out a very unlucky Kilkenny College to claim our fourth title in five years. This is a record of which we are very proud as the league is increasing in strength and depth year on year as evidenced by the increasing success of the schools like Newbridge, Roscrea and ourselves in the cup in recent years. In early January, we had a notable friendly victory against St Michael’s but it came at a significant cost as our captain Davy Colbert sustained a season-ending injury giving a match-winning pass in the final minute of this intense encounter. TEAM MANAGER: Gareth Pelly Noah Maguire assumed the captaincy role on the pitch and has been phenomenal since. We followed this up with successive friendly victories against Belvedere, Kilkenny and Castleknock which set us up nicely for our cup campaign. We were largely pleased with our performances in the victories against Clongowes, Wesley and St Mary’s and delighted to progress to our second Senior Cup Final in the last four years. We look forward to a great game against Blackrock College and may the best team win! All the players would like to acknowledge the efforts of our coaches and management in helping us to progress to this stage of the tournament and for a memorable season, especially our head coach, Declan Fassbender, whose tactical acumen and motivational skills have been central to the rise in fortunes in Gonzaga rugby in recent years.
