MANAGER’S NOTES
Welcome to Hampden Park for
our final game of 2023. It’s quite
fitting that we conclude our first
ever UEFA Women’s Nations
League campaign at home to our
oldest rivals. It’s been an intense
campaign with lots of encouraging
signs, lots of learning moments and
a few very difficult moments.
This group has shown a lot of
resilience in the last three months,
and we have stepped out of our
comfort zone which has allowed us to
grow and evolve as a squad. Losing
key players to injury has meant the
team has had to adapt and there’s
been significant progress collectively
and individually despite adversity.
The result on Friday night against
Belgium was a tough one to take.
We created lots of opportunities
to win the game against a good
team who gave us a very physical
challenge. Ultimately, we didn’t get
the result, but we want to put that
right tonight and finish on a high.
We hope to put on a performance
against England that is befitting of
the occasion. England are a fantastic
side and we showed in the first game
in Sunderland that we can compete
against them. We showed against
Belgium at Hampden that we will
fight until the last minute. Tonight,
we will give everything we have to
close this campaign positively.
Last year I said that we are on a
journey, and I want to thank you all
for coming on this journey with us.
Every single person in the stadium
tonight is helping to make history
and push the women’s game in
Scotland to the next level – that’s the
journey we are on together. Thank
you for all of your support this year.
HAMPDEN PARK / TUESDAY, 5 DECEMBER 2023 SCOTLAND v ENGLAND / 8
ALL ABOUT...
RACHEL
McLAUCHLAN
Nickname: Rach
Age: 26
Position: Full-back
Footballing idol: I used to play rightmidfield
and I went to every Livingston
game when I was little. Barry Wilson
was a right-winger and a number seven,
and I really looked up to him. I used to
wait behind to meet him after every
game. I also looked up to Julie Fleeting.
My Gran would give me newspaper
cuttings of Julie when I was younger,
and she’d tell me that I
could be like her one
day so that gave
me a lot of belief.

Scotland debut:
It was really special because
I was born in Livingston
and that’s where I made my
debut. I wasn’t expecting it
as I was still quite young at
only 19. My grandparents
were in the crowd and I was
definitely nervous. I didn’t
get long on the pitch, but
I just remember it being a
really special moment.
Favourite Scotland memory:
Going to the Euros in 2017
was massive for me. To be
part of the squad at such a
young age and have those
experiences was amazing. I
do still think that first camp
and debut at Livingston will
be something I hold close to
my heart forever though.
Best mates in camp:
I spend a lot of time with
Kirsty Maclean and Brogan
Hay. We’ve watched a few
films together in this camp.
I’m really close to Sam Kerr,
too, so it’s great that she’s
back in camp and we get to
spend some time together.
Footballing pet peeve:
It really winds me up if
you’re trying to take a
quick free-kick and a player
stands in front of you. I don’t
know why it bothers me so
much, but it really does.
Favourite pre-match meal:
I have got to have beans on
toast at some point in the
day. It can be my breakfast
or pre-match meal, but I just
have to have it. I’ve done
it for such a long time now
and I don’t know if makes
any difference to how I play
but I can’t do without it.
Favourite post-match meal:
I love a fizzy juice after a
game – I definitely crave
that after I’ve played – and
pizza. Pizza is always a
good post-match option.
TV choices: I love a good
crime documentary. I
also watched the David
Beckham one recently and
I want to watch the Robbie
Williams one – any decent
documentary and I’ll watch it.
Music taste: I just got my
Spotify Wrapped and Tom
Grennan was my top choice.
Dermot Kennedy and The
Lumineers were up there too.
My playlists are quite chilled.
Favourite film: Unbroken
- it’s based on a true story
and it’s really inspirational.
I also love Ice Age, though.
We watched it a lot growing
up and it just gives me
lots of happy memories.
Favourite holiday
destination: I love Croatia,
but Slovenia is underrated.
It took me by surprise and
not many people have been
there. It’s really beautiful.
If you weren’t a footballer,
what would you be? I
love dogs so I’d like to
run a dog hotel or a dog
play park. That’s the
dream after football.
SANDY MacIVER
Exclusive first interview with Scotland’s newest goalkeeper -
Sandy MacIver is back for her second camp following a Hampden
debut in October against the Netherlands in the UEFA Women’s
Nations League. Sandy joins shot-stoppers Lee Gibson and Jenna
Fife as the goalkeeping trio for Scotland’s final matches of 2023.
How has camp
Q been so far?
It’s nice seeing all of the
A girls again and getting
back with the team. It’s not
as nerve-wracking as it
was in the last camp so I’m
definitely happy to be back.
It’s only your second
Q camp, how easy has
it been to settle in?
It’s actually been really
A easy. Obviously, I was
nervous last time as I didn’t
know too many of the girls
but credit to the staff and
players because everyone
has been so welcoming.
It makes my life so much
easier when coming into
an environment like this
and I feel more settled with
every day that goes by.
You secured your
Q debut in the last camp
against the Netherlands.
Talk us through those
moments before you
walked out at Hampden?
Honestly, it was quite
A intimidating. I think
because it was my debut and
it was at Hampden, I don’t
think there’s a better place to
play your first game. It was
frustrating that we didn’t
manage to get anything from
the game so there was a lot
of mixed emotions that night.
Reflecting on it now, I really
enjoyed the whole camp and
the build up to that moment
walking out at Hampden,
it was a really proud night
for me and my family.
You also got player of
Q the match that night,
that must have been a
proud moment personally?
Going into the game the
A most important thing I had
in my head was implementing
the plan that we’d gone over
with the coaches, especially
taking the learnings from
the previous game against
the Netherlands. There
was a lot of emphasis on
playing out from the back
and being brave, so I was
just laser-focused on that
for the whole game. Getting
player of the match is great
and I was really proud,
but my focus was making
sure we got the game plan
right and I think we did get
a lot right in that game.
Your family were in the
Q stand at Hampden,
what did they say to
you afterwards?
I think they were glad it
A was over. My Mum and
Dad drove up and I’m not
sure if they spoke during the
four-hour journey because
they were so nervous but to
see them there just made
it all worthwhile. Even in
the first game away to
the Netherlands, seeing
my shirt in the dressing
room gave me a feeling of
belonging. I knew in those
moments that I belong here.
Staying on the theme
Q of your parents, you
have a Scottish Dad and
a French Mum. Describe
what a matchday was
like growing up in the
MacIver household?
It was always an
A interesting one – my Mum
is really proud to be French,
but she’s not lived in France
for so long now that she’s
pretty much an adopted
Scotland fan whether she
likes it or not. Ever since I
started playing football from
about the age of four, I was
a Scotland fan with my Dad
and anyone who’s followed
the men’s team knows it’s
been a bit of a rollercoaster.
Now to see them qualify for
another Euros gives fans so
much pride and now as a
player for the women’s team
the aim is to replicate that.
It’s been welldocumented
that you’ve
Q
made the switch from
England to Scotland.
Talk us through how
that came about?
Pedro contacted me earlier
A this year and the first thing
I did was call my Dad. I had
to play it cool when I first got
the call, but I really wanted
to meet straight away
and get everything going.
I’d always thought about
Scotland throughout my
career, even when I played
with Claire Emslie at Everton
we talked about it, but you
need to be wanted. When
Pedro made that contact it
was an easy decision and I
knew what I wanted to do.
You’ve come into a closeknit
goalkeeping group
Q
here. How has that dynamic
been since you joined?
I’ve really enjoyed it.
A Jenna and Lee have
made me feel very welcome
from the start. I always
enjoy getting to know
different goalkeepers
and learning from them
and their experiences.
Lee is obviously a very
experienced player so for
me to train and learn from
her has been brilliant.
And finally, with one
Q cap under your belt
what are your Scotland
ambitions going forward?
The priority for me is to
A continue to settle in and
get to know the team. This
is only my second camp and
I’m just really happy to be
here. I’m not thinking too far
ahead - I want to absorb
everything the coaches
want us to do on and off
the pitch and we’ll see what
happens beyond that. J
