The picture was taken in 2015 in Malawi. I lived there for 3 years and was lucky
enough to dive in community life in rural areas. This picture portraits a father and
his two sons in a stone house built in the early 20th century by first missionaries.

Selection of the publisher:
Travelling around man
with Mauro Vitale.
By Valentina Damato
May be the reason why we enjoy street photography
so much is because when we photograph
other people, we show our delight and
appreciation of interacting with other human
beings. With a humanistic approach and a
dignified glympse of different realities, the
extremly talented Italian photographer Mauro
Vitale, finds the right balance of empathy
and documentation with a significant creative
slant. He connects succesfully with the viewer
in a powerful level, capturing brilliantly the
human emotions, taking us with him in a fascinating
trip of discovery around man.

Interview with
Mauro Vitale by Valentina D‘Amato
How did you get started with street photography?
I worked for nearly 30 years for the Ministry of Culture,
initially dealing with photogrammetry and aerial photogrammetry.
This first phase allowed me to travel a lot and meet
different cultures. Gradually, the interest in etnographic
research became stronger and the Ministry supported me in
carrying out different projects. The center of my photographic
research has always been the man, or rather the human being
always in the foreground in my images, despite the diversity
of approaches, sensibilities, styles. Man is the fundamental
element that is reached when the excavation deepens and
touches strata that go beyond the surface, where the image
is materially formed, reaching the space of what remains of
the gaze after the gaze.
2.How it was to get in touch through photography with such
different cultures?
These photographic researches within the most varied cultures
portray more or less evident mutations apparently dissonant,
but characterized by a strong element of cohesion: each
of these enclaves expresses in a profound way the knowledge
and the world it bears. Rispect is the indispensable element
to bring cultures that are sometimes only apparently different,
this respect, if perceived as authentic, can cancel any
hostility or difference.
3.What do you do to stay motivated and not lose your passion
for photography?
Unfortunately I must admit that the pandemic has slowed
down my research a lot, but as for all things, sooner or later
it will end, and I hope as soon as possible to take up again
photographing with the incentive of being able to find an
inevitably changed world, who knows if for good or bad.

Aurélien Bomy:
Olivier Schram, an experimented and talented travel photographer
shares with us his taste and passion for cultural and
human diversity. His photographic work is a strong testimony
of how encounters with the unknown and the difference
can be a precise way , in photography, to transmit the
preciousness of social link in human lifes .
Hi Olivier, would you tell us something about you and your
photographic work? How did you get into travel photography?
As I was about 14 years old, my grandfather was the very first
person who introduced me to photography. He wasn’t such
a talented photographer himself but very good at explaining
how a camera works, the fundamental concepts of shutter
speed, lens aperture, depth of field, etc. The first pictures
I took were simply about daily life and landscapes in the
lovely little Provence village (south of France) where he lived
with my grandmother and where I used to spend most of my
school holidays. By the past and still nowadays, Provence
lights, luminosity and colors have had a great influence on
many painters. I must admit that the emerging young amateur
photographer I was at that time has been influenced
and forever conditioned by the importance of light quality for
taking good pictures.
Would you say that you’re taking pictures for memory? Or
for testimony?
When I started, for sure, I mainly took pictures for the memory,
as for keeping a remembrance and virtual part of the
treasures, beauties and encounters I was discovering during
my journeys. But year after year, as I got more interested by
the social reality and physical diversity of our world, the trend
to take pictures for testimony became stronger.
Would you say that your work is a curiosity or an interest for
the difference?
Yes, as I have travelled and still travel a lot, in various countries
and continents, the curiosity for what is different is quite
and evidence for me. It is even a kind of fuel. But as a photographer,
you can observe the difference on various fields… As
far as I am concerned, the aspects of social life, observation
of trades that have disappeared in western countries or of

festive and religious customs as well as urban bustle are my
main centers of interest.
Do you have an anecdote or a story that marked you about
one of your photography?
During summer 1988, I went to northern Pakistan for a fabulous
one-month trip. In the stunning valley of Hunza, while hiking
and meeting some local village people, I took the portrait of
Zafarullah, a 2-year-old child, with the Canon AE-1 camera I
possessed at that time. Almost 30 years later, once it had been
scanned, I posted this portrait on my online gallery. A few
months later, I was contacted by Zafarullah himself through
my Facebook page. He had recognized himself through his online
baby portrait… He had no personal photography at all as a
remembrance of his youth and so kindly asked me if he could
download his own portrait. We both have been very moved by
this “reunion” so many years later. Since that day we keep in
touch through FB and each of us is hoping that one day, we’ll
meet together again in his beautiful Hunza valley where he is
still living and working nowadays as a small tourism agency
owner.
Where can we find more of your work?
“Travelling Moods”, my personal website: https://www.olivierschram.photography/
On Instagram: @olivier_schram
On Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/olivier.schram.2/
Also, I have plans to publish a book dedicated to some of my
great travel emotions and encounters captured over the years
through the lens of my camera. Each image in front of its story…
Is there something more you would like to tell us?
Because of the pandemic, like many other photographers, I
have suffered during those last two years not to be able to travel
abroad. I have taken advantage of this period for launching
“Travelling Moods”, my brand-new website dedicated to travel
photography. But I have one main dream in mind now, being on
the road again!
Thank you Olivier for sharing your beautiful work with us!

Albania

A country where
the Mercedes Benz
is a status symbol, but the
people has have no work or future.
In the middle of Europe.
Albania | Selenica is a small town in southern Albania, about 15
kilometres as the crow flies northeast of Vlora. The town has
2235 inhabitants. The local authorities give a much higher figure
of about 7650 inhabitants. Selenica belongs to the Vlora Qark.
It is at the end of a road, a dead end - of life too perhaps? So it
seems to me, also an end without a future for that generation?
The town, the houses are in a terrible state, is there hope for
the children here? Albania is a developing country in the middle
of Europe. The civil war was not long ago, triggered by a lottery.
The lottery took the money out of the Albanians‘ pockets until
there was an uprising. The UN had to ensure peace and quiet.
The government was bogged down.

Havana, Cuba. These painters caught my eye, not only because of how
their blue overalls matched the blue of the Hotel Telegrafo, but also of
how they were precariously, yet confidently, hanging three storeys high
on nothing more than a rope and a short plank of wood!

The Golden Pier
When I remember some episode of my girlhood, it was always summer.
At that time, I used to feel that winter was endless but summer was
gone in a flash. This summer I returned to the pier facing the island,
where I used to go when I was a girl, a place witness from trivial conversations
to amusing and romantic stories.
It is the golden hour and I feel to be walking out onto a golden path.
The girl, also made of gold, is coming with a look full of future, overwhelmed
by the wonderful sunset, while a group of boys are laughing
and jumping into the sea, from the pier. With such scene is impossible
not to feel I am in some enchanted Neverland or timeless Tom Sawyer
story. Even the island from the distance seems almost a mirage. While
I am writing these lines, the lively ambient summer sound is fading
away. My winter is next and I know I will miss the golden pier.
