Teacher Background After the original harmony and unity of the human race was shattered by sin, God immediately sought to save humanity. Rather than leaving mankind to suffer in misery, God proclaimed what is known as the Protoevangelium, or the “first Gospel,” found in Genesis 3:15. In this proclamation, God spoke to the serpent, who represents the Devil, and gave the first revelation of His plan to send His Son to conquer evil and restore the communion between God and His people. The mystery of this plan unfolds through a series of covenants throughout Salvation History. The first covenant God entered into with mankind was the original covenant made with Adam and Eve. But, after the advent of sin, it became necessary for a new covenant to be made, this time, with a man named Noah. The covenant God makes with Noah is very similar to the original covenant between God and Adam; in fact, the Church refers to Noah as “the new Adam,” who sought to align himself to God’s will and work towards restoring humanity’s relationship with God through the baptismal waters of the Great Flood and the dawn of the new creation. Biblical Touchstones But Noah found favor with the LORD. GENESIS 6:8 By faith Noah, warned about what was not yet seen, with reverence built an ark for the salvation of his household.
