A Publication of
Pascha (Easter), the most glorious and radiant event in all of human history, commemorates
the Resurrection of Christ. Pascha is the Feast of Feasts, the Triumph
of Triumphs, and in the Orthodox Church, Pascha is not listed among the Twelve
Great Feasts, but it stands individually above them all.
This Paschal Joy is the Triumph which is enjoyed by our Lord, the Risen Christ,
as well as by us all. Nearly 20 centuries have gone by since He died and rose
from the dead. And yet, year after year, we follow Him step by step though all
the stages of His suffering and death, in order that on the Festive Day, we call all
people to exclaim in one jubilant voice: “Christ is Risen!” It is the Resurrected
and Highly Exalted Christ who is present among us today. And if Pascha is to be
associated with any single
emotion of the human soul it
is to be that of joy or gladness.
“For this is the Day
which the Lord has made, so
We cannot enter upon the joys of Pascha without
viewing those moments of wonder of the “chosen Disciples
of Christ.” These Disciples though they fled from Him in
the hours of His trial, waited in love and mingled in fear
near His tomb. As with puzzled expressions and doubting
steps they come today ever so slowly face to face with the
Risen Master. The Resurrection of Christ brought to them,
as it brings to us, the gift of Eternal Life!
Jesus Christ, who was so cruelly insulted and tortured,
He upon Whom they spat, mocked, derided and nailed
to the Cross, He, Whom they killed by crucifixion, enters
triumphantly into our midst today. Christ is Risen from the
Dead! As through one man, sin and death had come into the
world, so through another, the Risen Christ today, there
came the Life of God, Eternal Life and immortality to the
souls of humankind that life upon the face of the earth.
Pascha is the Day of the Resurrection. Let us be glorious
in the splendor of the Festival and let us embrace one
another. Let us speak also to those who hate us and in the
spirit of the Resurrection let us forgive all things. And let us
cry out: Christ is risen from the dead, by death He has trampled
down death, and to those in the tombs He has granted
life.
Christ is Risen! Truly He is Risen!
Stewardship update
As I reported in the previous Bulletin, 2021 was a turnaround year and we increased our stewardship numbers
by 1.9% and exceeded the budget for a total pledged amount of $403,219. The table below gives the breakdown
by pledge category. The significant shift in 2021 was in the categories $1001 and above. In 2020 this
amounted to 80 stewards, whereas in 2021 it increased to 92 stewards. This is a meaningful increase. Thank
you all for stepping up to the plate in these uncertain times. I find it inspiring.
As of 12-30-2021
Categories
# of pledged
stewards
Percentage
$5 -
$100 123 16.40%
$101-$500 391 51.13%
$501- $1000 144 19.21%
$1001-$2000 67 8.94%
$2001-$3000 15 2.00%
$3001-$4000 5 0.66%
$4000+ 5 0.66%
Total 750 100%
And now to 2022. As of 3/29/2022 we had 483 stewards pledged for $300,050.
The first reminder letters were distributed in early March. If you have received the letter but have not yet responded,
please do so now. THANK YOU.
Yours in Christ.
Parish Council News
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
John Maihos, President
Our church family is an amazing group of people, and I feel so proud to know so many
of you. To those who I have not met, I look forward to the day we work together on
some project that will fulfill the mission of our church.
To those who are always in the forefront, volunteering their precious time, thank you.
You are all an inspiration. Whether you are preparing meals for those in need, teaching a
class to the future leaders of our parish, cleaning up around the church, fixing a door (or
any of the other things that get repaired), or being a part of the things that keep our church running, I want to
remind you that we need you. You are appreciated.
Of course, some people work silently behind the scenes. Their work is just as visible, but it's not seen. I think
of the people who make our website looks so nice, those who keep our facilities clean, those who prepare
candles at Easter, those who prepare the koliva, the loaves of bread used in our Divine Litury. These tasks are
important too, and your work is appreciated.
Did you attend the Oratorial Competition a few weeks ago? That didn't just happen. Someone arranged for all
the youth members of our church to participate. I'm sure there was coaching, and maybe even a bit of coaxing.
At the end of the event though, each student who stood up and presented an inspirational message made
us all proud. I have to believe that the adults who helped organize the event were extremely pleased with the
effort that every participant displayed.
Did you attend the Greek School presentation for Greek Independence Day? If you missed it, you missed a
heart-warming pageant of Greek Dance, poems, stories, and so much more. This didn't just happen either.
Dedicated teachers, and loving parents made the day come together, and it was a show for all of us to enjoy.
Even the people who came for our meals program stayed to watch the children perform. Maybe they picked
up a few Greek words!
We will soon have our picnic at Winter Island in Salem. Many hands will make that event a success, and if
you can volunteer some time, it will feel good to be a part of it. Those who enjoy the fruits of your labor will
be appreciative.
As the Parish Council selects a Parishioner of the Year, let's all celebrate in the recipient's joy. We can be a
part of his or her contribution to our church, knowing that it's not one person who makes things happen. It's
our congregation that makes things happen. The recipient is a reflection of each of us, and when you talk to
this year's honoree, see yourself as clearly as you see them.
Thank you for helping make St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church a place that nurtures a spirit of faithfulness
in our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.
ST. VASILIOS GREEK SCHOOL ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΟ ΣΧΟΛΕΙΟ ΑΓΙΟΣ ΒΑΣΙΛΕΙΟΣ
Our Greek Independence Day Celebrations felt very much back to normal this year. They were well attended.
The flag raising ceremony took place on March 23rd. Mayor Bettencourt presented Father Chris with a
proclamation and city and state officials joined the Greek School in raising the flag.
Our Independence Day Program was held on March 27th, students did an outstanding job reciting poems, singing
songs and dancing.

Church School News
St. Vasilios is not immune to the decline in attendance of Sunday Church School. Studies show that kids are
spending more time on the field playing sports than in Church. We realize that sports are important to kids
and their parents, but we encourage you to consider Church School attendance a new habit. We welcome your
children to join us for the final 2 months of the school year.
On the Sunday of Orthodoxy, March 13 th , the children of the parish, celebrated the restoration of the icons to
the church, by participating in the Icon Procession during the Divine Liturgy. Children carried icons of their
Patron Saints. Congratulations to the students who participated in the Oratorical Festival.
On March 27 th , the High School and grades 7/8 classes helped prepare and serve our guests at this month’s
luncheon for those less fortunate, displaying their faith through action. We could not be prouder of these
amazing young people.
The Church School has 2 charity missions going on at this time; a ‘Sock Drive’ to collect 1,000 pair of adult
socks that will be donated to homeless shelters and VA organizations in our area (on-going collection) and the
OCMC Coin Box Mission which benefits Orthodox ministries around the world (deadline-May 1 st ). Thank
you for your support!
Graduation is right around the corner, and will be held in Church on Sunday, May 15 th . High School seniors
will receive more information soon. Classes for grades K through 11, will commence on Sunday, May 22 nd .
There are no classes on Sunday, April 17 th . & 24 th (Palm Sunday & Easter)
The Church School staff wishes everyone a beautiful, enriching and blessed month! Happy Easter!

Parish Feedback Survey
St. Vasilios will be conducting a feedback survey to assess our community’s strengths and weaknesses. The
goal is to identify ways that we can improve our practices to create a thriving Orthodox Christian community.
Some of the questions will ask for simple demographic information, while others will inquire about participation
in Church life. Hard copies of the survey will be available in the narthex, and there
will also be an online option. Please take your time and answer honestly, and please
complete just one survey. The Parish Council anticipates this survey
being available in the next couple of weeks.
HEALTHBEAT
Drug Allergy or Side Effect?
Medications can cause negative effects even while working well. But there is a difference between a side
effect, a potentially expected unpleasant reaction to a drug, and a drug allergy, an abnormal reaction of your
immune system.
Incorrectly calling a side effect an allergy might cause a drug or related drugs to be flagged in your medical
record, preventing providers from prescribing an otherwise appropriate medications.

Here are some tips to know the difference.
Check the documentation. While the drug labels include a brief list of side effects, the printed materials
that come with it contain a full list.
Know your risk. People with these factors are at higher risk of Greg allergies: 1. A history of other allergies,
,including food and hay fever. 2. A personal or family history of drug allergy. 3. Increased exposure
to a drug because of high doses, repetitive or prolonged use. 4. Certain illnesses, such as infection with
HIV or the Epstein Barr virus, which are commonly linked to allergic drug reactions. The drug treatments
may cause side effects such as rashes, that mimic allergic reaction.
Document your reaction. A drug can cause side effects in one person and an allergy in another. A prime
example is penicillin. Severe symptoms, such as hives or throat swelling may signal an allergic reaction.
Milder symptoms such as itching or a bloated feeling, are more likely side effects. Document all reactions,
including how long after taking the drug they occur.
Talk to your provider. Call your doctor or pharmacist. He or she is trained and experienced In differentiating
between the two.
BEHAVIORAL HEALTHBEAT Andrea O’Donnell, LMHC
Some of the most prevalent symptoms that mental health counselors are treating these days are increased
symptoms of anxiety and depression. Emerging from a 2-years long pandemic combined with the fast pace of
always being connected via various social media contributes to this increase. I
It is important to recognize the symptoms before they become unmanageable. One thing I recommend to
clients is they take their “emotional temperature.” Think of a thermometer with zero on the bottom and ten at
the top. For each degree heading up the thermometer ask yourself the following questions: How do I feel;
how do I act; what do I need? This will help you to identify some of the early warning signs that your symptoms
may be rising.
The goal is to stay under a 5, preferably at a 3 or 4. If you notice that you are above this, I recommend seeking
out professional advice. Start by contacting your primary care provider to rule out any underlying medical
conditions that could be contributing to your distress. Ask for a referral to a mental health provider or contact
your health insurance company for a list of providers within your network who are currently accepting new
clients.
As always, if you are experiencing a psychiatric emergency, call 911 or go to your local emergency department
immediately
