Growing up in Byculla, in bustling Mumbai, Melissa Monteiro
was part of a vibrant community that included people from all
walks of life. Surrounded by such diversity, she experienced
firsthand how embracing the differences of others can enrich
our lives. She also saw the struggles of the disadvantaged up
close. The leper and pavement dwellers she passed on her
way to school, who had nothing but what they carried touched
her deeply, as did the selfless activists and religious
nuns/sisters who worked tirelessly to help and effect change
for the poor and abandoned. She decided from a young age
that social work was her calling. She wanted to be part of the
movement and make a difference.When Melissa followed in
the footsteps of her parents and joined the community sector,
her study and social work saw her travel to many places
across India to assist those in need. One journey to the remote
Narmada Valley to deliver aid saw her survival skills and
resolve put to the test when she and her companion became
lost in the jungle for days. Far from discouraging her, this lifechanging
experience only strengthened her resolve to do more
to help those in the community who need it most.In 2000,
Melissa and her husband Prakash, decided to travel to
Australia to start a new life. With their one-year old son, they
immigrated to Sydney, determined to contribute to the
community and embrace the opportunities &#8216don
under&#8217 From her first lucky break in a small community
not-for-profit in Blacktown, to her current role as Chief
Executive Officer of the Community Migrant Resource Centre,
Melissa has continued her work in the community sector here
in Australia, where her dedication and passion have seen her
have a real and meaningful impact in the lives of
