FIRST CHAPTER

VILLA SAVOYE

2

What‛s going on ?!

AAA AAA !

OMG! Is it a portal ?

Where are we? I remember the

last time I saw a green light, then

I think we were teleported.

AAAAA!

It seems we are in a forest,

look, there is a building!

Wait, Archie! This building looks so

familiar to me... I think I know this...

OMG! Archie, this building is...

Yes Jane! This is Villa Savoye !

3

One of the most famous buildings of modern architecture! Look

how it is harmonised with nature. I can‛t believe we will visit this

building! I remember that the building was designed by Le

Corbusier in 1929.

He used mainly reinforced concrete in his buildings, as you know,

new materials were introduced to the architecture in the modern

era, 20th century. Of course, we can not forget glass!

It was very important to bring transparency

and light to the modern interiors!

Oh, look at the facade.

White, purified from

unnecessary

ornamentations!

Speaking of the 20th century,

what date are we in?

What does it matter, Jane? We are in France! We

are next to Villa Savoye! Do you remember the five

points of modern architecture by Corbusier?

4

Look, the first one! The building is

raised from the ground with the

help of pilotis, it means reinforced

concrete columns.

It allows modern buildings to

become free from the ground and

also take the nature underneath.

And the second point, horizontal,

elongated windows...

Look how these horizontal windows frame the nature,

like a painting. They are also providing even lighting

for different interior spaces. As you know, light is

very important for the modern spaces...

I know you are very excited,

Archie, but I think we should

go inside and find the next portal.

The third point Le Corbusier mentiones is free facade.

Look, all facades have different features here! Free facade

are realized when there are no load-bearing walls and pilotis

allows it!

Oh, Archie! We can really sense fluidity here with

the ramps and circular staircases! Look how much

light the interior takes! Also, there is minimal use

of furniture without unnecessary objects. Use

of white plaster... Such a modern interior...

Look at the curvilinear shape of the entrance!

The perpendicular walls are combined with such

organic forms in modern architecture thanks to

reinforced concrete. Very fluid, very modern...

5

C‛mon Jane! We

should check

these spaces

one by one!

Look at the plans of the house, Jane! There are very

few walls, without any load bearing one. The spaces

are very open, fluid. This idea of free plan is, as you

can remember, the fourth point of Le Corbusier.

Yes, Archie. But first,

we should dance and

enjoy this moment!

5 MINUTES LATER...

1

2

Archie, there is a men‛s hat

on the table.

And there is food on the

counter! I think we are not

alone in the house!

I think it is empty, Jane. Look around, there is no any

sound. We should use the ramp and see the roof garden,

which is the last point of Le Corbusier. I think the

garden is great, let‛s go to the upper floor!

You are still talking about modern architecture, lol.

Okey, Archie, let‛s see the roof. But don‛t forget,

we should also find the next portal. It should be

somewhere in the house.

1- Beatriz Colomina, ‘The Split Wall: Domestic Voyeurism‛ (1992), p. 99

2- Beatriz Colomina, ‘The Split Wall: Domestic Voyeurism‛ (1992), p. 101

6

Oh! Just like in the photos... I think we should...

Wait, Archie! There is a woman

here! We should hide, c‛mon!

Apart from the woman, there are old

cameras, I think we went back in time!

Let‛s get close to the roof, there should

be something going on...

3

Hey, kids! What are you doing there?

Archie, after the lady goes, we should

focus on finding the portal before

someone sees us and...

Hi, did you come for the

promotional shoots of the

building?

WHAT !?

3- Beatriz Colomina, ‘The Split Wall: Domestic Voyeurism‛ (1992), p. 103

7

The year? We are in 1935, kid. Did you drink too much?

We are taking some photographs of Villa Savoye to

promote modern architecture‛s modern interiors. I can

give you a tour if you want.

What.. Yes, yes definitely. Could you explain

the shoots in a more detailed way? And also

the year we are in, please?

It would be great... but we

don‛t want to... disturb you.

So, the woman walking is also a model,

right? Where are the shoots exactly?

Yes, she is. The shoots are being held in the

roof garden right now.

And these are some photographs from previous

promotions. The new devices of the new technology,

ha. Great! As you know, media is really important for

modern architecture to be known by the world.

Mister, why the woman is always inside in these photographs? The men are always enjoying the fresh

air, light, nice view but the woman is kept in the house? I think it is not a right attitude to promote

modern life style.

4 5

4,5- Beatriz Colomina, ‘The Split Wall: Domestic Voyeurism‛ (1992), p. 105

8

Ah, young lady. What better job could a modern

woman have than taking care of modern interiors

and raising her children?

Modern women should experience the modern

life as they want instead of following the norms

determined by the society. Oh, I think you have

so much to learn about.

You are a lady with very interesting ideas, but I think you should mention

your ideas to Corbusier, if you see him. Because he is the one who directs

how the photographs should be taken and positions the models. I am going

downstairs to have some food, see you then!

Well, I should we continue

our journey with the roof

garden, Jane.

You are right, Jane. We always see how the interiors

are pure, free, merged with nature, and filled with

light and modern furniture. But there are also social

aspects of the modern era, whatever. Let‛s go to the

roof and find the portal.

Archie, don‛t you hear the guy? How can Le Corbusier be

such a person who acts according to certain stereotypes

about genders? You all talk about how the building is a

masterpiece but as you can see, modern architecture is a

coin with two different faces, and apperantly we don‛t see

the negative face in our history classes...

9

Oh, finally... The roof is accompanied with many horizontal

windows to frame the nature, and ramps also exist here. The

whole building is like a promenade according to Le Corbusier.

As you know, movement and dynamism are important keywords

for modern architecture.

Whatever, let‛s go out, maybe the portal is waiting for us here.

The spaces in the house is really fluid though. It has been a

fun adventure until now. How crazy is that we are in 1930‛s

in Villa Savoye...

Archie, look! There is another

woman on the roof.

She is one of the

models, I guess.

It can be a coincidence, right?

Jane, why does she wear exactly

the same clothes as us!?

No, Archie, it can‛t! These are our

uniforms... But I am sure I have never

seen this girl before! Let‛s meet her,

and ask about it if we have a chance.

10

Hi! We are Jane and Archie.

You must be one of the models

of today‛s promotion, right?

Hello! I am Teresa, and you are right. I'm here to

take some pictures of me in the building. What a

great opportunity, ha? It is a great building and I

will be playing a role in the promotion of this modern

spaces to the society.

Wait, what do you mean?

I think Jane wants to say that in your era, there are some

stereotypes related with the role of genders in society

which restrict the liberation of people, especially women.

We still have this problem in our time, though.

Why are you talking like you're from another era?

Oh, about that, have you ever seen

the previous photographs where

the women are kept inside the

house? What a wrong attitude...

He is... a little sleepy, so never mind,

but don‛t you really think women should

have a much more active role in the

changing modern life?

You are right, actually.

11

It‛s a great idea, right?

Yes, but...

For example, you should be outside in

the photographs and enjoy this roof

garden, as a symbol of modern spaces.

They say I will

be inside in

the photos...

and dealing with the house works. It's a great

house and I'll be taken inside it. Isn‛t it also

nice?

Yes, but you should also be seen in the roof, taking fresh air,

reading a magazine, and just enjoy your life. Trust me, modern

life will bring many opportunities for you, and you should show

society that women also deserve them all. So, I think you should

talk to Corbusier and persuade him.

Yes, I will talk to Corbusier!

I think he will make some

changes.

It made me happy to see

open-minded people like you,

friends.

Thank you so much for the conversation. Are you here

until the end of the shoots? I would like to have a drink

with you later.

Before that, I want to ask about your clothes...

12

...because...

Archie, I think I find the portal!

We are wearing the same clothes, I think it

is Corbusier‛s choice for the shootings.

But we are not here for the...

Archie, I think we do

not have time for that!

What is going on? I don‛t...

We really like you, Teresa,

but we need to go.

Well, okay... Take care of yourselves,

my friends. I will try my best.

Don‛t forget what we have talked,

it was a pleasure to meet you...

13

What a journey, ha? Run, Archie!

We are almost there! I want to go to home, c‛mon!

?!?!?!

JANE, WAIT!

???

What are you doing, Archie?! We

need to pass through the portal.

Jane,wait. Don‛t you see this

man? I think he is...

14

He is Le Corbusier! I can‛t

believe it! Let‛s meet him, Jane!

No, Archie, we can‛t! We need to pass

through the portal because it disappears!

Also, interacting with an architect can result

in severe problems in the time line, Archie!

Well, okay...

Archie, I will count to

three, and we will head

to the portal.

But... Jane...It‛s Le Corbusier... just...

Three! Run,Archie!

Behave yourself,

Archie! We need to

go back to home!

15

AAAAA!

Wait, what?!

Don‛t forget to design

Unité d'Habitation!

SEE YOU, CORBU!

?!?!?!

Anyway, I thought I heard

something... I should go back

to my work.

I better write that

name somewhere...

...Unité d'Habitation...

16

SECOND CHAPTER

SCHRÖDER HOUSE

17

AAAAAA !

AAA AAA !

Let me look around and find

some information.

Wait, this is not our home, now

where are we? Oh, this adventure

looks longer than I thought.

10 MINUTES LATER...

Well, the map says we are in

Utrecht. From Paris to the

Netherlands, ha? Let‛s walk then.

Look, Jane! There is a girl crying there. I know

we should minimize our contact with people, but

I think we need to ask her what is wrong.

Okay, Archie. Let‛s go and ask her. Maybe she

can also help us finding the next portal,ha?

18

6

Wait, don‛t cry...please... We

can really help you, honey.

In the school, one of

the boys said I am

living in that ‘loony

house‛...

Hi, honey. Why are you crying,

is there anything we can help?

What does it mean, honey? Why

would they call where you live? The

houses in that neighbourhood seem

so similar to each other.

Ours is not, the

Schröder House...

Wait, what? Are you the daughter of Truss Schröder,

and you live there? The brilliant house, the house far

ahead of its time... One of the most innovative buildings

of modern architecture... Can we go there?

Yes, I am daughter of Truss Schröder,

and you like my house, ha? Of course

we can go to my house.

Oh, my sweet house...

In the other houses, the use of brick is

really extensive in the neighborhood, but

my home looks very different from its

exterior, my mom says new materials were

used in our house.

My mom and the architect Rietveld

designed it together, do you know, we

have even movable walls. Really cool, ha?

6-Alice T. Friedman, ‘Women and the Making of the Modern House‛ (2000), p. 79

19

Oh, where are you Haneke?

And this is my home! I think

it‛s beautiful, why can‛t other

people see that?

Do you know Schröder House, Archie? It is one of most

successful buildings of the modern era for me. Look at

the exterior, we have some planes, cantilever parts, and

extensive use of glass. Very playful, free facade...

HEY, MOM!

HANEKE ?

Where have you been? I have

been worried so much about you.

Sorry mom, I didn't realize how far I was from home,

but these nice people helped me to find my way!

20

Thank you so much.

I did not expect such a celebration,

thank you so much, again. I would

be very glad if you and your friend

come inside. I cooked delicious

cookies.

You are welcome, Mrs. Schröder. By the way,

I love your house. I think it is just great, and

you are a very brave woman to take part in

designing such a different house compared to

the buildings of its own era.

I am very happy to hear that. Of course we

come to your house. I really want to see the

playful interior. I hear that you have extensive

use of colors and many contemporary furniture.

Just wonderful...

What do you like so much

about this house, Jane?

Truss Schröder is a widow, Archie. After

her husband died, she wanted to change the

design of her house so that she can raise

her children in a modern environment that

she looks after. She is interested in art,

literature, and architecture. She is one of

the pioneers to create more flexible spaces

that modern people need. She is a very

visionary woman!

Hey, kids. Come and see also

the interior, I can‛t find such

excited visitors often...

C‛mon Jane, let‛s go inside. I get really

curious about these movable walls, use

of colors, and furniture. By the way, do

you know which year are we in?

I think the end of the

1920‛s, Archie. Whatever,

look at the facade!

21

As you said in Villa Savoye, this

building has also no unnecessary

ornamentations, but still we can

sense the playful space organization.

Even the facade gives clues about

the interior. Look how different

planes and lines come together.

Rietveld, the architect, was in a successful

coorperation with his client, Mrs. Schröder.

It is not a very common relationship, you know.

The value of this building is coming from this

collaboration of two such visionary people.

Okay, Jane. Please let‛s go

inside now. I really wonder

how it looks like...

I will be in the studio,

kids. If you need

anything, let me know.

Have fun!

Look at the colors, and although the use of

furniture is minimal, they enrich the spaces.

They are the design of the architect, Rietveld.

22

I get very excited, Jane! The

interior is really fun. Colors,

furniture, the intake of light.

You can sense the dynamism.

Wow, even more beautiful

than it looks in the photos...

Let‛s go upstairs, the

movable walls wait for us!

Look, Archie! Very open spaces,

the sliding panel walls are arranged

according to the different needs

of Schröder family. The changing

spaces with the changing modern

life. How functional and dynamic!

It looks really stunning!

She is a mom who cares a lot the education of her children, so she and Rietveld

designed this floor with these movable walls so that the family can have different

interactions here. Sometimes, they are in their bedrooms, but sometimes the rooms

are becoming one large gathering space. And look at the chairs, they are very

modern with their colors and proportions.

23

With all of these planes,

lines, and colors, the

building is like a three

dimensional version of

Mondrian paintings.

There is probably

so much inspiration.

The ground floor includes common,

large areas like a library, a workroom,

and a kitchen. These are seperated

with traditional walls.

And first floor includes

the bedrooms and a large

living and dining area,

they are all flexible due

to the movable walls...

Look how the interiors take sunlight, there is

a glass opening on the roof. Ah, I feel that we

are now looking to a dynamic drawing...

10 SECONDS LATER...

Wait, what?!

???

Look at the back, Jane! After you said we are like in a

drawing, the building actually starts to turn into a drawing!

We should find the portal and leave the place!

24

FASTER !!

Oh, I see it! It is in the Mrs. Schröder‛s

bedroom, we have to go there before

becoming a cartoon character! Run, Jane!

We are so close to the portal,

Archie! Let‛s go to home!!!

How can it be possible? There are many planes,

we need to jump over them to reach the portal.

The house is really becoming a drawing!

AAAAAA !

25

LAST CHAPTER

PRUITT-IGOE

26

AAA AAA !

Ah, again not home. I hope this

will be our last destination. I want

to go to home!

This time, I really don‛t

know where we are.

Hey Archie! The boards says

we are in Pruitt Homes. Does

this mean anything to you?

There are many high-rise buildings

and I can‛t recognize them. Oh, I

should have listened my history

classes more carefully... Anyway,

let‛s take a walk.

Not really... I think we should

find someone and ask them.

27

Look, Archie! There are people

playing football. Let‛s ask them

where we are.

Jane, look! Like Teresa, this boy is

wearing our uniform. Things are

starting to get even stranger.

Hi! It will be a weird question but, can you

say where is this place, exactly? And also...

what year are we in now?

Archie, I know it sounds crazy but, could this

time portal and our school have something to

do with it?

Hello, friends! You are in Pruitt-Igoe, and

the year is definitely 1972.

I don‛t know, Jane. Could there be other time

travelers?! I think we should learn something

from the guy, but first we need to ask where

and when we are...

Pruitt-Igoe, ha, now it sounds familiar

to me. Can you give more information?

Well, this is one of the most known social

housing projects of the last decades. The

project was designed by the architect

Minoru Yamasaki at the request of U.S

goverment, and the main aim was providing

housing for the poor section of the society.

28

Well! Now I remember the project!

The social housing project of the

modern era where the white and black

community was planned to live together.

The construction was finished

between 1951 and 1955, people

here say that there were many

changes in sociopolitical

situation in St. Louise, where

the project is located.

You are right, but as you can see,

there aren't many white people left

living here. Even the number of black

community decreased significantly

among the years.

Well! Why is the vacancy rate is so

high right now? I remember that the

buildings have many architectural

problems.

Yes, the buildings lack open and social areas, we do not have even

gym or playground for children. Although the size of the project is

really large, there are almost no landscape elements. The long and

dark corridors of the floors make the buildings possible places of

crime and vandalism. Unfortunately, during the years, the rate of

crime and vandalism increased. The buildings also lack the quality of

materials, generally they are very cheap and damaged, there are

even some exposed pipes in the corridors and they are really

dangerous. The plan of the houses are problematic, in my home, we

have only one bathroom although we live six friends there. Overall, I

can say these 11-story high-rise buildings with many problems have

played role in the increasing vacancy rate.

29

Yes! People, in these days, blame only the architect and modern

architecture. However, the main problem starts with the

economical problems. In the first place, Yamasaki designed these

high-rise buildings as apartments and houses with gardens. He

imagined many nice interior galleries filled with light, but the

government forced him to provide as maximum housing as possible

within a minimum budget. He then had to make the buildings much

taller without any landscape or amenities for the residents. And

the second crucial issue, is racial segregation.

It is sad, but what about the social and

economic aspects? I think they should

definitely not be ignored.

The planners imagined that the black and white community

would live here together when the black segregation was very

strong, especially still it is a problem, you know. Also, as my

neighbours said, in the 1950‛s white community with higher

income level started to move out and go to suburbian areas.

Then, their houses left empty as the black people did not

have money to buy them. As the number of people living here

decreased, the services could not be supplied, because the

housing authority was providing the maintanance of the

project only by the rents taken from the residents. Then,

physical conditions have gotten worse and worse, and crime

and vandalism increased significantly.

?!?!?!

Definitely! Even the purpose of creating a

mixed class of white and black community in

such a period is very heavy burden for modern

architecture to handle, but people don‛t

understand this. Today, unfortunately three of

the buildings will be exploded. You can stay if

you want to watch ‘the failure of modern

architecture‛, as the media and society say.

We are really sorry... but what

about your uniform, we also have it!

You know a lot about Pruitt-Igoe, well. So we

can say although there are some architectural

problems, economic and sociopolitical aspects of

1950‛s in St. Louise have a much more dominant

and adverse effect on the unfortunate destiny

of Pruitt Igoe.

Uniform? It is just a regular

cloth for me, and I don‛t

remember where I got it

actually. Why did you ask?

30

I am... just a little taken aback because

of the demolition. Thanks for your

answers, see you later.

They actually sacrifice modern architecture and

its buildings instead of having a comprehensive

understanding of existing social and economic

structure of the society. What a shame!

See you my friends...

Yes! We learn through our journey that modern

architecture is not flawless as we see in the history

books, but it has also no power by itself to solve all

of the social problems, and people need to realize it...

Are you okay, Archie?

Where are you going, Jane?

We need to continue, Archie.

Nothing came out of this

uniform thing but there's still

a portal to find.

I did not remember from the history

courses that the buildings of Pruitt-

Igoe would end up with being

exploded, look Jane...

These buildings were once home to many people, but now

they will be destroyed...Well, I see a poster there, let‛s go.

31

Look at the first image of Pruitt-Igoe. We can see

how the architect was forced to increase the floors

of the buildings. Everything could have been different.

Look, Archie! There is a crowd,

I think they are gathered to watch

the explosion. It should be very

soon. Let‛s go there.

Jane, we should do something! These

buildings can be still saved and be

home for many people!

We can‛t do anything, Archie! Haven‛t you watched

the Avengers?! We can not change the history, it is

too risky, we just have to sit and watch.

10 SECONDS LATER...

I‛m also very unhappy, Archie.

But the only thing we can do is

watching the explosion and then

find the portal.

Wait, no way...

32

Archie, look above... Can you also

see what I see?..

Jane... I see and...

IT IS THE TIME PORTAL!!!

OMG, Jane! We should enter the building

before the explosion starts.

When will it start, Archie?

They said the explosion would start at twelve. We

still have some time. I think we can manage it.

33

RUN, ARCHIE, RUN!!!

Okay, Archie, let‛s go and find the

portal. It is the only way for home.

I don‛t want to stuck in 1970‛s. I

want to go back 21th century...

We'll come back home together,

Jane. I promise...

34

7

The physical conditions of the building

is really problematic. There are exposed

steam pipes everywhere, very risky!

These elevators are broken,

we should find one working

properly.

Focus Archie, we need

to find the portal.

Oh, the elevators are so undersized!

We're lucky if we both can fit...

I think, we need to

reach 6th floor.

Look, Archie! This elevator

seems to be working. Let‛s

get on it.

30 SECONDS LATER...

8

Wait! It did stop at 4th floor, not

6th one. Is it also broken ?!

I remembered, Jane!

These are skin-stop

elevators!!!

Because of the economic restrictions, the

architect Yamasaki had to use skip-stop

elevators in Pruitt-Igoe and they stop only

at certain floors! Now, I start to remember

the history classes... Failure of modern

architecture, ha...

7,8- Mary M. Comerio, ‘Pruitt Igoe and Other Stories‛ (1981), p. 26, para. 4

35

Are you sure the stairs are on that side?

I CAN‛T BELIEVE IT! THEN WE

NEED TO USE STAIRCASES, C‛MON

ARCHIE, LET‛S GET OFF IT!

No! But I will find them. Pruitt-Igoe may be

known as the death of modern architecture,

but it won‛t be my death!

This way, Archie! We can manage it!

1 MINUTE LATER...

Yes, architectural problems are one of the

reasons of this explosion, but we can not

disregard the socipolitical and economic aspects

of this society. Whatever, how much time do we

have left?

Let me look.

All of the spaces are very similar here, very

closed, dark, and damaged. The architectural

problems are undeniable, unfortunately, and they

make our job much more difficult!

36

We still have 5 minutes.

Okay, run Archie! I think

the portal is over there!

9

Wait, what... It is impossible...

I feel like we are wandering through a maze of corridors,

no wonder crime and vandalism rates increased in such an

environment. I think we need to get seperated and search

for the portal. It should be in this floor, the one who finds

it informs the other.

3 MINUTES LATER...

OMG! They cut off the lights!

Probably the explosion is about

to start...I can barely see.

HEY, JANE! CAN YOU HEAR

ME? WHERE ARE YOU?!

9- Mary M. Comerio, ‘Pruitt Igoe and Other Stories‛ (1981), p. 26, para. 4

37

Hey Archie, I‛m right behind you!

Come to my voice. I think I find

the portal for this time!

Yessss, I can see it, the

green light... Run, Archie!

You can see it too, right? We must

enter the corridor on the right.

Come on, we don't

have much time left!

Yes, Jane. I think

we can make it!

FASTER, ARCHIE!!!

I‛M TRYING!!!

38

We are so close to go back to

home, Archie! TOGETHER!

Ahh! The building is started to

shake, I think the destruction

began but we are so clo...

AAA AAA !

39

Oh,no! My foot is stuck in something.

What? Is there a

problem, Archie! We

are so close to the

AAA AAA !

I am not in home, but where

am I then? And also when?..

WAIT, WHAT?!

How can it be possible... The

buildings just look like the

structures in the futuristic

drawings of Antonio Sant'Elia!

Am I even in a real world or...

HEY, YOU !

???

Welcome to the

future, new kid.

Wait, which manifesto? Where are

you?! What is happening right now, I

can‛t understand! Will the future look

like this?.. I have so much questions...

Now, I am teleporting to the

ceremony, don‛t be late for

the manifesto!

If Archie was here, he would know

what to do. Archie, please come

back, please survive the

destruction. I need you...

C‛mon Archie, please

come back before the

portal gets closed...
