Head Coach
Mark Bonner
Firstly, I’d like to welcome Johnnie Jackson, his staff and players to
The Abbey for today’s Sky Bet League One tie against Charlton Athletic.
Welcome to tonight’s re-scheduled fixture against
Charlton Athletic, originally due to be played
yesterday afternoon. Having appeared live on Sky
Sports on Saturday, we were required to nudge this
game back by 24 hours to allow for the appropriate
recovery time in-line with all those who played on
Good Friday and Monday.
At the time of writing - due to printing deadlines - we are
yet to play Wigan and therefore I will hold judgement on
whether or not I like TV games and 5:15pm kick-offs!
In all seriousness though, it has been an interesting
process to understand the challenges playing TV
games can bring. It brings a new experience for us and
having little control or say over the option, I thought
you would find the following insight interesting.
Clearly there are some huge benefits to such a game.
League One had a brilliant focus on Saturday with
three live games throughout the day - all involving
promotion chasing sides. As the drama towards the
broadcasted play-offs begins, this is a super platform
and profile for our league, which usually gets very
little live exposure.
We were asked to be live for the MK Dons home
fixture for Monday night football a few weeks back,
but due to a clash with the international window,
MK were unable to move the game. Sky have been
chasing us for a live game it seems, so we must have
good reach for the TV audience - or perhaps that’s
coincidental and it is the promotion chasing teams
they are really interested in!
The next benefit is that it is rare for a club like ours
to play on national TV. It was a shame to miss out on
the domestic FA Cup rights at Newcastle, but having
appeared first on Match of the Day and then been
on BBC Red Button for the Luton Town game, we
have gained some excellent exposure to a national
audience this season. That is good profile for our
club, players and sponsors.
With just a few remaining games left this season and
the away games being so big, it keeps everyone on
their toes and means we have to be at the top of our
game in order to be competitive.
Sky and The Premier League are the most significant
external providers of funding to the EFL and its
clubs and without their income generation and
globalisation of our game, we wouldn’t be blessed
with so much exposure and quality in the leagues.
The pyramid would not be as strong and the
incredible work undertaken in Community Trusts and
Academies would not be possible.
However, it has its flaws as Ian Mather has often
stated. The Tracey Crouch review in essence is
asking for greater fan involvement and to ensure
the sustainability of every club at every level. The
strength of English football and the ingrained culture
in all of our lives is in its depth and reach. That is
what needs protecting.
Moving the fixtures isn’t great for supporters who
were looking forward to a Bank Holiday Monday clash
for this game, and in turn significantly reduces the
attendance and income generated. Moving the fixture
to Saturday at 5:15pm meant that the overnight stay
required a much later check out time from the hotel,
almost doubling the costs of the trip. The share of
broadcast revenue for the game was £10,000. We are
significantly down financially from the game and what
we hoped we could generate from the weekend.
It is of course hard to measure the gains financially
that can arise from such exposure, and of course, Sky
Sports indirectly create huge revenue for teams. But,
as an isolated example, we are financially worse off
for the game being on the TV.
Today, we face a team who have put a good run
of games together. The away game was a belter. We
lost 2-0, but it was one of our best performances of
the season.
It always felt like a good day and had we converted
our chances would have ran out winners. Cheered on
by a huge away following, many of whom arrived on
HMS Ironside, it was a good day, but a disappointing
outcome.
With this being the penultimate home game of the
season, here is hoping we can continue our good
home form and look to have an encouraging end to
the season.
Enjoy the game.
Mark
Chief Executive Officer
ian mather
Welcome to all who have made the trip from London. Although both clubs
have secured their place in League one for next season there is plenty to
play for and we expect a tough and entertaining game.
This is my 70th programme note since I took on
the role of CEO in July 2019. It was intended that I
would do this in an interim capacity for one season
but Covid and promotion meant this has extended
to three. With two programme notes to go I write
in this one with reflections on the last three years
and in my last note, for the Cheltenham game, I will
offer thoughts on the future.
All of the success we have had over the last three
seasons can be traced back to one event. That was the
point in October 2019 when Paul Barry became the sole
owner of the club. This move from 705 shareholders to
one was a struggle for some to accept and thanks go to
the shareholders who agreed to back the move for the
benefit of the Club.
Sole ownership, alongside a strong board with excellent
business skills, made for clear decision making. It
may seem odd but an early sign of this was in the
tarmacking of Cutthroat Lane which had been a dirt
track for ever. Then in January 2020 Colin Calderwood
left and Mark Bonner was appointed as caretaker Head
Coach, followed by a permanent appointment just at
the moment Covid struck.
The risk Covid presented cannot be overstated. From
the moment the first lockdown was announced in March
2020, just ahead of our game v Cheltenham, we faced
a massive loss of income with no idea as to when we
would play again. I took part in the virtual EFL meeting
where clubs voted to end the season early for the first
time since WW2. It was a bleak moment. But there were
reasons to be positive.
Our fans were hugely supportive. There was no clamour
for refunds and, when we put Season Tickets on sale,
1,000 were sold for a season with no start date or
guarantee that fans would be allowed in the Abbey when
it did start. Our Corporate supporters were brilliant and
also stuck by us. It was not the same at all clubs.
We used the furlough scheme and staff took a pay cut.
Paul’s travel business in the US was heavily affected by
Covid but he introduced new investors, Adam Webb
and Mark Green who could not have been more helpful.
We worked with EFL on analysis to manage a socially
distanced crowd and hosted the first competitive
game in the country with a crowd. We were ahead of
the game thanks to work done by Ian Darler and Andy
Beattie.
Through all of this turmoil Mark Bonner and Ben Strang
assembled a team that went on to win us automatic
promotion, just one point from winning the league.
At the start of this season every pundit predicted that
we were certain to go back down to League 2. In the
end, whatever our final results, we won’t be in the
bottom six – and have not been there all season.
It has been an amazing rollercoaster – but one we have
been able to ride with confidence due to our ownership
structure.
I will sign off with thoughts for the future in my end
of season programme note but, for now, enjoy the
game.
Today’s Opposition
charlton athletic
FOUNDED: 1905 | NICKNAME: THE ADDICKS | STADIUM: THE VALLEY | LAST SEASON: 7TH (LEAGUE ONE)
The battle for 12th
place intensifies this
evening as the U’s host
Charlton Athletic in
the penultimate Abbey
showdown of the season.
Conor Washington stole the show
in the return fixture in November,
scoring both goals as the Addicks
ran out 2-0 winners at the Valley,
with the home side that day
enduring their best run of the
season under the stewardship of
Johnnie Jackson.
Prior to November’s clash, the
U’s had not locked horns with
Charlton this millennium, having
been separated by as many as
five divisions throughout the
noughties.
Despite looking destined to be
battling it out amongst the top
six prior to the new season, after
missing out on the play-offs last
season on goal difference, two
wins in their opening 13 games
saw the Addicks mired in the
bottom four midway through
October, a run in which ultimately
cost Nigel Adkins his job.
Renewed optimism later returned
to the Valley after club icon
Johnnie Jackson once again
impressed while in temporary
charge of the club for the second
time, with the Camden born
manager later being handed
the reigns on a full-time basis
following a run of six wins in his
opening nine, setting the Addicks
up in good stead for the second
half of the season.
Perhaps surprisingly, history
favours Mark Bonner’s side
heading into tonight’s game, with
the U’s enjoying eight wins over
the Addicks since 1973, two more
than their counterparts, who have
beaten the U’s on six occasions
over the last 49 years.
Currently enjoying their second
best run of the season, the
Addicks arrive at the Abbey
this evening having won four
of their previews six outings
in League One, prior to the
Easter Weekend, with the
Addicks impressively seeing
off title challengers Rotherham
United ahead of their clash with
Morecambe on Good Friday.
Having dramatically seen off
Sutton United to lift the Papa
John’s Trophy a week prior, the
Millers welcomed the Addicks
in high spirits, with the aim of
moving back into the top two.
However, George Dobson’s strike
from the edge of the area ten
minutes after the restart was
enough for Jackson’s side to leave
South Yorkshire will maximum
points, as the Addicks put a dent
in the Millers’ promotion hopes.
The Gaffer
Johnnie Jackson
D.O.B: 15.08.82
P.O.B: Camden, England
Having made over 275
appearances for the Addicks
and averaged over two and
a quarter points per game
over two temporary stints in
charge of the club, Jackson
seemed a no brainer to
be given the gig and was
handed the permanent
reigns at the Valley in
October, following the
dismissal of Nigel Adkins.
The Camden born manager
has since changed the
fortunes of the South
London club, with the
Addicks looking set for a
relegation battle towards
the end of October, however
now arrive at the Abbey
tonight looking to secure the
final top half spot.
Safe Hands
Craig MacGillivray
Age: 29
Nationality: Scottish
The stopper arrived on a free
from Portsmouth in the summer
having made 135 appearances
on the South Coast, and quickly
made the number one shirt at
the Valley his own, appearing
in all but two of Charlton’s
League One games this season
– keeping 14 clean sheets in the
process, a record only bettered
by three other keepers.
The Scotsman progressed
through the ranks at Harrogate
Railway as a youngster, not
playing in an academy set up
like many other who make a
successful career out of football,
an impressive feat given the
keeper has made over 170
appearances in League One now.
The Rock
Akin Famewo
Age: 23
Nationality: English
After impressing on loan from
Norwich City last season,
Famewo re-joined the Addicks
on loan for a second season
this campaign, with the Addicks
holding the option to sign the
former Luton Town defender on
the permanent deal at the end of
the season, should they wish to.
A product off the ever-impressive
Luton Town academy production
line, Famewo made the switch to
East Anglia in 2019 before going
on to make his Premier League
debut just a few months later
in the Canaries’ final day defeat
against champions Manchester
City. The 6’1” centre half now
finds himself at Charlton, having
made almost 60 appearances for
the Addicks over two loan spells.
The Creator
George Dobson
Age: 24
Nationality: English
Having progressed through
the ranks at both Arsenal and
West Ham before making a brief
switch to Sparta Rotterdam
in Holland, the midfielder was
snapped up by Walsall after
impressing with the Saddlers on
loan in 2017. Again impressing,
despite Walsall’s relegation
to the fourth tier, Dobson
was signed by Sunderland in
before going on to make 47
appearances for the Black Cats.
The tough tackling midfielder
has been a mainstay in Jackson’s
side since being appointed in
October, most recently scoring
his first goal of the season in the
Addicks’ 1-0 win over promotion
chasing Rotherham.
The Hitman
Conor Washington
Age: 29
Nationality: Northern Irish
The 29-year-old joined the Addicks
two years ago, arriving at the
Valley boasting international
pedigree, having made over 30
appearances for Northern Ireland.
Washington will arrive at the Abbey
this evening as no stranger to the
U’s, after scoring both goals in
Charlton’s 2-0 win over United in
November.
Another who didn’t follow the
traditional academy route into
football, Washington made initial
mark just 15 miles away from the
Abbey at St Ives Town, scoring over
50 goals for the Saints as a teen
before joining Newport County. A
move to Peterborough followed,
with the striker eventually making
the move to Queen’s Park Rangers
for a reported £3m fee.
FROM THE SLO
with Dave Matthew-Jones
THIS EVENING WE WELCOME THE SUPPORTERS,
OFFICIALS AND PLAYING STAFF OF CHARLTON
ATHLETIC TO THE ABBEY STADIUM.
Two former Charlton
players Bill Whittaker and
Herbert Johnson played
a large part in Cambridge
United turning
professional and its rise
through the non-leagues
during the 1950’s.
Interestingly, they both
played together in the 1947
FA Cup Final when Charlton
beat Burnley 1-0. This final is
also remembered for the ball
bursting during the match. It
was the second year running
when this happened. At the
time, it was blamed on the poor
standard of leather available
following the war.
During March, Cambridge United
helped sponsors A&R Haulage
(UK) Ltd provide items for the
people of Ukraine. Thank you to
everyone who brought something
to the ground. These have now
been delivered to Romania. A
raffle was also organised at the
Shrewsbury match for a shirt,
which raised £440 and will go
towards buying additional items
to send to Ukraine. Phil Merwiak,
who helped with the raffle and
supplied the flag for the players to
walk out with is organising a fund
raising event at the Hat and Rabbit
in Fulbourn towards the end of
____.
In other news, after losing his
Great Grandad to cancer, 10-yearold
Harry Austen is completing
a 10 mile walk this evening at
the Abbey Stadium. The walk
is in aid of Cancer Research
UK, the charity that helped his
grandfather. The walk will take
about 5 hours to complete and
will start in Cambourne. If you
would like to donate towards
his walk, please visit their Just
Away Travel for the last away
match of the season against
Sunderland is now online for
supporters to book a seat. If you
would like to use the coach, visit
org, ring 07591 111251 or email
Away Travel is a project I have
really enjoyed doing throughout
the season. Working alongside
Gina and Greys Coaches it has
been a sharp learning curve. The
Carlisle Away Travel group were
really helpful at the beginning
of the season and offered some
excellent advice on their scheme.
Their assistance highlighted how
different supporter groups can
work together and help each other.
As we prepare for the final away
trip of the season, where better
to finish than by going to the
Stadium of Light at Sunderland.
I am pleased to report we have
been able to run the scheme
at almost break-even. It is even
more remarkable considering the
number of supporters who had
to cancel coming on trips due to
COVID throughout the year.
We have been able to run the
service to all league matches,
despite some of the mid-week
matches involved long distances,
small numbers and large losses.
The highlight of the season must
be the trip to Newcastle in the FA
Cup. In over 50 years of supporting
Cambridge United I cannot
remember a better away day.
Thank you to our sponsors East
Sussex U’s, Worcester U’s and
CUFC Lottery. I would like to
thank all our regular travellers and
everyone who has used the service
during the season.
Memories Down
Evening again, folks.
Let’s look forward to
next season with the ever
increasing certainty that
we shall be facing our arch
rivals from North Cambs for
the first time, properly, in a
blinking long while. And that
ladies and gentlemen takes
us back to 19 April 1972 and
our second season in division
four and a little scrape
against PUFC.
The second season of
League football had been an
altogether happier affair for
the U’s and we were destined
to end up 10th in the table.
This was our fourth meeting
with Posh since August 1970
and yet you would struggle
to convince people that
Wednesday evening that this
was our big local derby
in the offing. Probably
because Peterborough
was in Northamptonshire
until 1974 before being
promoted to Cambs.
To make the point, our
two fixtures that season
Scan me to
read the archive
programme...
generated crowds of just over
8,000 whilst those at London
Road and the County Ground
were a tad over 16,000. It is
certainly my recall that things
didn’t really catch fire until
the 1977/78 season when
both clubs vied for promotion
to the second division. We
won by the way.
The less said about the
result that balmy evening in
April the better, as we were
walloped 2-5. Superhero
Brian Greenhalgh notched
both goals that night in front
of 4,248. Curiously, 48 hours
later we travelled to Roots
Hall to face the Shrimpers -
who were second - and beat
them 2-1. Mr Greenhalgh
again with a brace. The
crowd? 17,303. By far the
biggest we faced that season.
The next best came at
Blundell Park earlier that year
with nearly 12,500 supporters
in attendance. Anyway,
Southend still got promoted
with Grimsby champions
and Posh finished two points
higher than the mighty U’s.
An interesting programme.
The cover for the whole of
the 1971-72 campaign was
just beautiful, with the best
badge not only of Cambridge
United but the whole wide
world. Who can forget the
likes of City Bargains and
the ABC BBQ in Mill Road?
And indeed who can forget
a certain “Turner” listed in
the opposition line-up that
evening? God rest his soul.
I HAVE BEEN ASSURED BY MY
HAIRDRESSER, NAT, A FORMER
CHARLTON ATHLETIC GOALKEEPER
AND DEVOTED FAN, THAT WE ARE IN
WITH A VERY GOOD CHANCE AGAINST
A TEAM WHICH, IN ALL HONESTY, HAS
UNDERACHIEVED THIS SEASON.
He has taken a particular interest in Dimitar Mitov.
Dimi was a very talented Charlton apprentice
and like us, he has been hugely impressed with
his season. After the performance at Newcastle,
we all realised that we have a very accomplished
performer in our goal. No doubt plenty of scouts
will have reached the same conclusion.
We probably should have won at the Valley where we
spurned any number of good chances. I am sure that
Sam Smith in particular will be desperate to score
against them today. Following our disappointing
home game against a powerful Wycombe team, we
achieved guaranteed League One safety with an
energetic and at times accomplished performance
against Morecambe. They scored one of the best
goals we have seen at the Abbey this season, but
Bennett and Simper showed great promise and Wes
rolled back the years with a 20-minute cameo. His
control and range of vision changed the course of
the game. Surely it would be good to give the wizard
another season to bring on the youngsters?
He has much to offer whatever he does now. If we
succeed in finishing the season in the top half of the
table, it will represent our best league placing since
1993. What an achievement that would be!
Gandhi
The golden way is to be to be friends
with the world and to regard the whole
human family as one.
On top of all that, the work done by the Community
Trust this season and throughout the pandemic has
been heart-warming. I loved the half time Walking
Football display a few weeks ago and the display of
the disability football teams during the Morecambe
game was inspiring. The Newmarket Road End
cheered the players to the rafters and who will ever
forget their response to the little lad who scored right
in front of them?
Not a dry eye in the house. I get tired of the dated
perception of football fans that we are all mindless
hooligans and violent clans of thugs. Real fans are
always passionate and deeply caring people. This
was sport at its very best. Phil Mullen has done more
for disabled and disadvantaged people than anyone
I know.
We are lucky to have him and a Community Trust
which believes in the power of sport to change lives.
It was wonderful to see Dimi Mitov, Harvey Knibbs
and Will Mannion helping out at the Seniors’ Lunch.
I have always been proud to be a U. These things
make me even prouder.
Giving Football Back to
Small Business
At eBay, we know small business and
football clubs used to be like chips and
gravy, two peas in a pod – a match
made in community heaven.
Ironmongers, ship workers, spring
makers and cobblers, all formed clubs
which decades later are still prospering.
But nowadays, you’d think it was all
eyewatering transfers, Super Leagues
and mega sponsors, detached from the
humble origins of our historic clubs.
That’s why eBay are proud to support
300,000 small businesses who help
power EFL clubs nationwide. We’ll be
donating our advertising space to a lot
of these businesses – on match day
hoardings, around grounds and beyond –
throughout the coming season, to ensure
they can continue to thrive in our local
communities. So, join us in giving your
support to Small Business Power, because
today, they need us more than ever.
IN PARTNERSHIP WITH
26 www.cambridge-united.co.uk | CambridgeUtdFC | Cambridge United Football Club | cambridgeunitedfc

Cambridge United
Over the past two
months the club have
arranged a variety of
Under 21 fixtures as
we look to continually
evolve our games
programme and give
our players different
challenges.
The squads for these fixtures
have comprised of a mixture of
this season’s youth team players
and young professionals. It is
always nice to see some of our
‘loan players’ wear the Amber &
Black again.
The Cambridgeshire FA
Invitational Cup offered an
interesting challenge for the group
this year. Normally Academy
games are about development, so
adding the competitive element
against senior opposition was a
big test for the players, which I am
delighted they passed with flying
colours by beating Ely City in the
final and lifting the Cup.
The competition started with
a trip to Soham where a team
that comprised of just three U19
players alongside our U18s won
3-1. Then, a trip to Cambridge
City where despite going 2-1
down, a flurry of late goals saw the
boys run out 4-2 winners after an
excellent second half display. In
a similar fashion to the previous
rounds, the final against Ely City
was won thanks to another brilliant
second half, after Saleem Akambi’s
opener was followed up by an
outstanding team goal which Kai
Yearn finished off.
Away from the Cup, games against
Concord Rangers of the National
League South and a variety of
different Category 2 and 3 Under
21 teams have meant that the
group have had to adapt to
different situations and styles.
After going a man down against
Charlton, the boys managed to
negotiate that situation and find
a way to win. The First Team of
Concord Rangers then posed a
different, more physical challenge
but a goal either side of the break
saw off the National South Side.
The groups only defeat this year
arrived at the hands of Luton Town
with a second half penalty enough
to see off a spirited United
challenge.
Most recently, Millwall travelled to
St Neots in an entertaining game
that ended 4-2 to United.
Most importantly though, these
games have given players such as
Lewis Simper and Liam Bennett
U21S RESULTS SO FAR:
the game experience needed to
be ready to jump into the First
Team fold.
Everybody saw their superb
performances against Morecambe
the other week and without these
competitive fixtures, they wouldn’t
have been ready to play 90
minutes in a League One game.
With fixtures against Watford U21s
(A) on Thursday 21st April and
Southend U21s (H) on Wednesday
27th April still to come, the group
will be working hard to continue
their form and development as
they look to finish the season
strong.
As we reach the final
stages of the season, the
fantastic games keep on
coming with Charlton
the visitors tonight at
the Abbey. On behalf
of everyone connected
to the Women’s team, I
would like to wish Mark,
the staff and the players
all the very best of luck.
The Women’s team are now reaching
the final stages of their season
as well and with just two games
remaining, we can start some
of the planning for next season.
The Development team finished
their season strongly with four
consecutive wins and a particularly
impressive 2-0 win over a strong
Watford side in their final game.
I think we will see more of
these young players making the
transition to the first team next
season, as the likes of the talented
Ella Marsden have this season. We
will also be looking to strengthen
the team over the summer, and so
I am sure the break will still be a
very busy time for all of us in the
management team. The application
for players wishing to join us for
our open trials is now available
on our social media channels, so
please help us spread the word.
Before we look too far ahead
though we still have two very
important games. The first is
a huge local derby against
Cambridge City on Sunday 24th
April at St Neots Town FC - a game
that we all have looked forward to
for some time.
Then, our final fixture is away
against AFC Wimbledon and an
opportunity to avenge the defeat
from a few weeks back when we
had a goal disallowed and control
of the game before being reduced
to 10 players on 30 minutes. Both
games are ones we want to win,
but they are also opportunities to
see a few players with next season
in mind. We hope to see a few of
you there to support.
Let’s get behind the lads again as
we approach the final few games
in what has been a fantastic season
on and off the pitch. Hopefully we
will be celebrating another 3 points
at the end of the evening.
Come on you U’s!
IT’S HARD TO COMPREHEND THAT THE PENULTIMATE
HOME FIXTURE OF THE SEASON IS ALREADY UPON US –
TIME REALLY DOES FLY WHEN YOU’RE HAVING FUN!
Tonight, we’ll dissect the
run-ins of our 24 members as
they approached the Easter
fixtures, picking apart their late
objectives as well as determining
who we may be saying a farewell
and welcome to.
Starting at the top, it’s looking
increasingly likely that Wigan
Athletic could prove runaway
leaders of the division – particularly
if they’ve capitalised on their
games in hand in the three-horse
race. Eight unbeaten, becoming
centurions is still on the cards. In
spite of that, a side in even greater
form, MK Dons, have tasted defeat
once in 2022 and show no signs
of stopping – putting pressure
on fellow automatic promotion
rivals Rotherham United, who have
suffered back-to-back defeats but
remain conscious that 2nd is still in
their hands.
In 4th and boasting a five-point
advantage in their play-off pursuit
are Plymouth Argyle. If anything,
their focus may have diverted to
sabotaging the top two – and
why not with their watertight
defence that has outrageously
conceded once in their previous
nine. Occupying the final positions
are Sheffield Wednesday and
Sunderland, both accumulating 73
points and have generated sheer
momentum of late, going six and
eight unbeaten respectively.
Unfortunately for them, their
passage to the promised land is
far from complete with Wycombe
Wanderers hot on their heels.
Solidified on the same number of
points and goal difference with
an identical undefeated streak to
the Black Cats – nobody wants
to miss out. That looks the case
for Oxford United after three
successive defeats, but their
goalscoring prowess gives them
an outside chance.
Up next are the trio who have
fell just short owing to costly
sticky patches scattered around
the campaign. In Ipswich Town
and Bolton Wanderers, both
with one win in five, are sides
with real potential to kick on as
they plot long-awaited returns to
the Championship. Portsmouth
perhaps require it more, they lack
a goalscoring touch and have only
seemed to regress.
There’s an enticing battle for a tophalf
finish between a pack of four,
with the promoted Cheltenham
Town and Cambridge United
leading the way and enjoying
some season. Under the tutelage
of Michael Duff and Mark Bonner,
32 www.cambridge-united.co.uk | CambridgeUtdFC | Cambridge United Football Club | cambridgeunitedfc

they’re in safe hands. The last of
three lodged on 54 points are
Accrington Stanley, back to winning
ways and continuing to hold their
own. Charlton Athletic are the final
outfit and, with four successes
in six, they will hope to lay the
foundations for a busy summer.
Safe enough to no longer look over
their shoulders are Shrewsbury
Town, whose gritty defensive
resolve has done the trick. Five
more points will match last season’s
points tally to ensure another
consistent showing. The same can
be said about Burton Albion, whose
sizzling start to the season gave
them a cushion they held on to.
As for Lincoln City, they’ve never
really recovered from their Wembley
hangover as they languish in 18th
courtesy of one win in six.
Now here’s where things get
tasty. With five points separating
five teams, every point matters
in the bid to avoid the drop.
Currently remaining afloat via goal
difference, which could ultimately
determine things, are Fleetwood
Town and Morecambe. What’s set
them apart is goals, particularly
for the Shrimps who have the
division’s leading goalscorer
in their ranks. Can they keep
churning out results or will they
succumb to the pressure?
Gillingham know the solitary win
would breathe life into their run-in
– and you wouldn’t bet against that
being around the corner under Neil
Harris, where they’ve remained
competitive in their previous six
games. Maximum points would
be a start for AFC Wimbledon. A
winless run of 24 games is far from
ideal, but they’ve escaped from
these situations before. Doncaster
Rovers realistically need a minimum
of 42 points to survive, but the fact
they’re yet to record a run of three
games unbeaten makes for shallow
reading. Matters are grim for Crewe
Alexandra, whose relegation to
League Two was recently confirmed.
Planning for next season has already
started as the Railwaymen aim to
bounce back.
So, who’s joining us you say? A
certain Peterborough United look
destined to make an immediate
return to the third tier, whereas
Derby County’s brave resistance
has run out of steam alongside
Barnsley who have faltered in the
face of their pre-season optimism.
Forest Green Rovers look head
and shoulders above their pack,
whilst Exeter City and Port Vale
are in admirable form. But in
arguably the most unpredictable
fourth tier in years, the promotion
race remains anyone’s guess.
1
Stockton
Saturday 9th April, 2022 | Sky Bet League One | Abbey Stadium | Attendance: 5,813
Cambridge United made an
instant return to winning ways
in Sky Bet League One with
a clinical 2-1 success against
Morecambe at the Abbey
Stadium.
A Sam Smith strike on the cusp of
half-time gave the U’s a deserved
lead from an encouraging opening.
Whilst weathering a second-half
storm, Cole Stockton levelled
matters with a sublime longdistance
volley to hand the visitors
a crucial equaliser – only to be
shattered immediately when Joe
Ironside dispatched from the
penalty area to ensure the points
and another season in the third tier.
view from the
press box
with Doug Shulman...
THE WIN OVER MORECAMBE IN OUR LAST
GATHERING AT THE ABBEY HAS MATHEMATICALLY
SECURED THE U’S LEAGUE ONE FOOTBALL FOR
ANOTHER SEASON AND WITH FOUR GAMES OF THE
CAMPAIGN STILL TO PLAY.
In truth, they pretty much got
the job done following victory
at Wimbledon towards the
end of last month, then further
cemented that position with the
away success at Ipswich but, to
formally rubber-stamp matters
last Saturday week, was certainly
something to celebrate.
It could perhaps be viewed as
slightly negative, raising a glass to
being 16 points clear of the bottom
four when the U’s are in reality – at
the time of writing – looking a
good bet to clinch a top half finish.
Nevertheless, the quality at this
level cannot be underestimated, as
has been evident from the opening
day fixture against Oxford so, for
the U’s to comfortably hold their
own and provide everyone with
such brilliant memories during
the past nine months, is surely
something to shout about.
In fact, the club are on course to
record what will be their highest
league placing since the 1993/94
season, when they concluded
that particular Endsleigh League
Division Two campaign in 10th
place, sandwiched between Hull
and Huddersfield. The fortunes
of other clubs in the league that
year is a barometer of how quickly
things can change too. A quartet
of teams are now plying their trade
outside the top four divisions
in, Barnet, Wrexham, York and
Stockport; the latter two actually
reaching the play-offs, which were
eventually won by now-Premier
League outfit Burnley.
Going in the opposite direction
courtesy of relegation to the
Football League basement were
the aforementioned Barnet, Exeter,
Hartlepool and remarkably Fulham
– who may have been promoted
back to the top flight by the time
you read this. Five other clubs,
including the U’s, Bristol Rovers
and Leyton Orient, have also had
spells in non-league, but managed
to regain their status.
Moving back to the present day,
the current season will no doubt
continue to throw up plenty of
results defying form and betting
odds, as pressure mounts to clinch
promotion, reach the play-offs
or avoid relegation. Witness
struggling Everton beating
Champions League chasing
Manchester United ten days ago,
or today’s visitors Charlton sealing
a deserved 1-0 away win at title
contenders Rotherham.
The trepidation, the unknown, the
unpredictable nature of football.
That is why we love the game as
we do!
I AM FREQUENTLY ASKED WHAT THE RELEVANCE OF
CFU IS NOW THAT THE CLUB IS WELL RUN, OWNS ITS
GROUND AGAIN AND MAKING ITS WAY UP THE LEAGUES.
We also have CUSP asking the
day-to-day questions and the
promise of a Golden Share or
Shadow Board, although we
have yet to see what that might
look like.
I take great pride in the fact that we
are the first club to employ this way
of protecting the club from future
owners who might be tempted
into asset stripping, changing the
badge, changing our colours, or
selling the ground. As things stand,
none of these potential crises
would seem to be possible and so
the question about what we are and
what we do is a good one.
I like to think that we have made
ourselves useful to the club in a
number of different ways - such as
running Away Travel, helping with
the reintroduction of hard copy
Programmes and even running
the poll to determine Player of the
Season.
The Lottery raises a lot of money for
the club, much of which is used for
maintenance of the pitch and vital
medical equipment. It also funded
the electronic scoreboards which
I was delighted to see advertising
our AGM, as well as celebrating the
birthdays of our fans. We help to
put the icing on the cake.
In addition, we support the work
of the Community Trust and
encourage community links with
places such as the local mosque
and homeless shelter. We promote
real diversity in the community
and most recently have been
supportive of women supporters
and the Amber Belles. We seek to
explore which fans’ needs could be
more fully met and have suggested
ways to support the elderly,
the less mobile and those with
autism, for example. We believe
that by working with the club we
can reach a situation when any
fan, regardless of needs, can feel
welcomed and fully provided for at
the Abbey Stadium. A task made
more straightforward by getting our
venerable ground back.
Finally, we are independent
and democratic. Our FED and
committee members are elected by
and answerable to our membership.
We do our best to represent the
views of all Cambridge fans and
sometimes that has brought us into
opposition with a particular view.
That said, we remain a force for
good and are entirely determined
to help the club we love as much
as we can. We hope that you will
Barack Obama
The single most
powerful word in our
democracy is the word ‘we’.
We, the people. We shall
overcome. Yes we can.
join us at our AGM and give us our
views. If you’re not a member yet,
do join us.
