Six Months
From Idea
To Building
OME churches and
S chapels have to work for
years in order to raise sufficient
capital to pay for
alterations, improvements
or additions to their existing
buildings.
But not so Potterhanworth
Methodist Church.
In September of last year
the officials of the chapel
decided that, as the existing
Sunday School was in such
a dilapidated state and
would need such a large
sum of money spending on
it to bring it up to standard,
it would be more
advisable and economical to
build a new one.
Money-raising started in
January; now building has
begun.
MORE COOKING CAPACITY IN
When builders took the
thatch off recently, ready
for rethatching, the. 16th
century church practically
fell down.
Instead of being faced
with comparatively minor
repairs, Dr. E. H. Fletcher,
Vicar of Bilsby and of St.
Peter's, had a ruin on his
hands.
He was so upset by the
gaunt sight of the building
that he asked the Bishop of
Lincoln, Rt. Rev. Kenneth
Riches, to examine it.
TO GO AHEAD
The Bishop did so, and
wrote to Dr. Fletcher asking
him what he thought
was best.
"I called in an architect,
and on his advice, and
because this is the only
thatched church in the diocese,
have decided to go
ahead with the restoration,"
said Dr. Fletcher.
He estimates it will cost
£1,500, but is not worried
about raising this amount.
There is £400 in hand, and
he believes that there will
be generous help from various
Trusts, and friends.
Mr. W. K. Smith, wbo is
carrying out the work, said,
"The place was dangerous.
We had to keep our eye:
open for falling timber."
And to illustrate his
point, he stuck his %ger
deep into a 16th century
oak beam, riddled with
woodworm, which had been
taken from the roof.
Good timber, and the best
Norfolk reeds for the roof
will soon make this unique
church, which was erected
from the remains of an
Augustinian Priory after
1534, once again an attraction
for tourists and photographers.
MONEY in abundance should have rolled into the
Somerton Castle, by permission
of the owners, Mr.
and Mrs. W. E. Battersby.
As well as all the usual
side attractions associated
with garden fetes, a
special sports programme
was arranged for everyone
between the ages of eight
and 21 years.
into a little valley, where
all the races were run.
Sports laid on for the
young people in the different
age groups included athletics
with egg and spoon races,
high jumping, long jumping,
and skipping. Open events
were eight-men teams competing
at tug-o war, and a
one mile race.
Ardent workers from
the various sections of the
circuit were in charge of
other diversions, which
ranged from skittling for a
pig to visits to the famous
"King John's Chamber,"
where King John II of
France was imprisoned in
1359, and Mr. Battersby's
dairies, where up-to-date
demonstrated.
Highlights of the evening
were a pigeon shoot, pig sale
RUSSIAN trawlers lying off the coast of South Uist
in the Western Isles, where Britain has a
rocket launching base, fired the imagination of TV
writer, Robert Barr, writes CATHRYN ROSE.
He saw the trawlers when he was preparing a
TV documentary on the flying doctor service to
these remote Scottish islands.
Now he has written a sixart
spy-thriller serial with
he Western Isles as a setting
Viewers can see the first
visode on BBC-TV on Sum
lay. But though it falls at a
rime on a Sunday usually
associated with children's
programmes this is no chillren's
serial.
Bob, a grey-haired Glasgow
.,)cot, went back to South
and Benbecula in the
spring to work on the serial
with a location team. Many
of the people whom viewers
will see are not actors but
genuine inhabitants of the
-lands, lie tells me.
"The Dark Island" title
of the serial derives from
the sinister articles found—
according to the plot — on
one of the islands.
Barr has never written a
serial before. He is a script
editor of "Z Cars," has
worked on the "Spycatcher"
and "Scotland Yard" series
and an many other documentaries.
His next venture will be as
executive producer of "The
Net," a six-part series of
half-hour programmes featuring
an immigration officer
and his work.
ANOTHER
CHANNEL
Tide is the result of a successful
hour-long documentary
programme dealing with
attempts at illegal entry 3t
London Airport seen last
year.
Give us another channel
and we will put on "Bucknell's
House" at a different
time. This was the BBC's
answer when, in response to
viewers' requests, I asked
w:ly it is transmitted at the
very miss-able tima of 6.20
p.m.
Do-it-yourselfers can - say
what they like. The BBC
knows from scientificallyworked-out
statistics that
most people want to watch
Eric Sykes or Jimmy
Edwards or Sid James—even
in repeat form—between 7
p.m. and 9.30 p.m.
Barry's programme will
catch about 3,000,000 viewers
and this counts as a minority
andi e ce
For after-seven viewing the
BBC want to court the majority—the
10.000 000 touch.
And one way to do this is to
THIS
put on programmes viewers
will not readily switch off.
Once caught they tend to
stay On the same channel
throughout the evening.
Barry himself says he has
heard that many people are
unhappy at the "11LcknelLs
House" goes (Att.
Letters Irvin viewers say so.
He likes the idea of
repeating the series about
10.15 p.m. to give people
who miss it at 6.20 p.m., a
chance to view.
All this apart, the LBC a' 'e
PAROCHIAL
OUTLOOK
London attracts most
people, who live in Cher
cities, even if it is only for
shopping at certain times of
the year.
But the TV companies
which serve the provinces
tend to preserve a parochial
outlook on the capital.
They have, for instance,
declined Associated-Rediffusion's
offer to network their
Festival of London programmes.
These begin on July 9 with
a reception attended by the
Queen and include concerts
in which Yehudi Menuhin,
Artur Rubenstein (making
his first TV appearance arywhere)
and singer Elisabeth
Schwarzkopf appear.
Apart from Londoners,
only viewers in \Vales and
Aberdeen will see the Festival
programmes.
WATCH OUT
FOR THIS
Helen Cherry makes one of
her fairly rare appearances
on TV later this year. She
is in a 17th-century musical
play called "The Brockenstein
Affair," which has just
been recorded.
Watch out for this — the
sets are really sumptuous
and the costumes splendid.
Oddly enough, Helen's husband
Trevor Howard is also
in a period play on TV. He
plays opposite Ingrid Bergman
in lbsen's "Hedda Gabler,"
later in the year.
NOT SO
FLIPPANT
"Men—on W011,011" is the
title of the programme
Granada TV are doing in
reply to "Women on Men,"
winch caused quite a stir.
The men will be talking
about women on July 1S—
with Brian Inglis as chairman
and 'Malcolm Mugge-
ram
I'm told this will not be
quite such a flippant pro-
who is back again on BBC-TV.
gramme as the one in which
women discussed men.
At Granada toey call it
in the new play he is rehearsing
for BBC-TV.
It is called "Up a Gum
satirical comedy featuring
a British and a Russian
colonel.
Others in the .,ast of this
The record. in the senior
boys' section was broken by
P. Jessop, of the Comniercialroad
Methodist Youth Club.
He finished well ahead of runner-up
L. Blewitt, of Morton
Hall, who clocked 5-5-1.
In winning the intermediate
boys' mile, R. Morton,
of 2160 (Sleaford) Squadron
A.T.C., won with a time of
4 mins. 57 secs., but did not
beat the existing record.
FAST RELAY
Two teams broke the intermediate
boys' relay record.
Barnhill Young People's Fellowship
won in 51.2 seconds
and St. Deny's Youth Fellowship
were second in 52.2 secs.
Most outstanding result of
the day was in the senior
girls' discus competition
where Miss .F Vittles, of
Grantham College Students
Association smashed the
smashed the existing record
existing record with a brilliant
throw of 113ft. 4in.
Her closest rival was J.
Ramsden of Grantham Air
Rangers who threw almost
half this distance-54ft. 10in.
Most of the 100 yds races
were very close events.
In the junior boys' 100 yds,
N. Hall and G. Wollerton were
both given the time of 11.2
secs, Hall being the winner.
M. Cozens and R. Key were
also given the same time,
Cozens winning in 14.4 secs
An interesting point is that
Hall's time in the junior race
was nine tenths of a second
faster than that of D. Wade,
