WELCOME
Another year, another Salon International
It is amazing how quickly it comes
around again and led me to think
about all the things we have achieved
in the last 12 months. From surveys in
African Caribbean hair and spa
therapy, new standards for electric nail
files and a code of practice for waxing,
to meetings with the Welsh
government, a workplace learning DVD
in Scotland and the creation of sector
frameworks for foundation degrees, it
has been a busy but rewarding year –
not to mention finally settling in our
new offices and welcoming many new
faces to Habia.
And on the horizon, we have the
launch of Young Apprenticeships at
Salon International, the continued development of Specialised Diplomas, skills surveys into
hairdressing, barbering and beauty therapy, plus a whole range of new products to help you in
your business and your career.
So it looks as if the next 12 months are going to be as busy as the last. If you want to find out
more about what we are doing, come and visit us at Salon International – stand D140/D145.
Enjoy the show!
achieves
Habia has achieved Investors In People
(IIP) accreditation for the fourth time
running for its commitment to
training and staff development within
the company.
One of the reasons for Habia’s success,
the inspectors noted, was its flexible
working practices, family friendly
policies and the sense of belonging to
a team amongst the staff. Also
highlighted was the organisation’s
development of staff through training,
good working relationships between
different teams and people of
different seniority, and the way in
which problems and issues are
addressed and solved.
Investors in People is a national quality
standard which sets a level of good
practice for improving an
organisation's performance through its
people. For more information, go to
FRAMEWORKS
for apprenticeships
There have been several
developments in Apprenticeships/
Modern Apprenticeships in the
last couple of months.
In Spa Therapy, the framework for
Advanced/Modern Apprenticeship in Spa
Therapy for England and Wales was
submitted for approval with the Skills For
Business Apprenticeship Approval Group in
September. The framework will have some
flexibility in that entry to it can be from
areas other than beauty therapy or nail
services – for example, those that have been
working in a spa environment, such as pool
technicians or fitness instructors, can
progress to the Advanced/Modern
Apprenticeship. If approved, it will be
available from January 2007. This is the first
time that this framework will be available in
England and Wales, though there has been a
framework for Spa Therapy in Scotland since
December 2005. It is hoped that a framework
will also be available in Northern Ireland
following approval for England and Wales.
In Hairdressing, the Skills for Business
Apprenticeship Approval Group approved
the Apprenticeship/Foundation Modern
Apprenticeship for England and Wales that
will be implemented in September. The new
framework will contain the restructured NVQ
in which perming, previously mandatory, will
become optional. Evidence of the delivery of
Employment Rights and Responsibilities (ERR)
is also required for framework completion
certification. The frameworks will also be
adapted by the Department for Education
The Maltese delegates have been learning a
range of skills including assessment practices
and quality assurance, and will return to
Malta able to teach others the HIQ levels.
Justin stated, “The Habia standards will be
introduced to schools, colleges and around
500 registered salons on the Maltese islands.
The main aim of Habia Malta is to raise the
standards of the Maltese hairdressing
industry to be in line with international
regulations.”
The implications for industry are huge. Habia
research has shown that currently around
75% of the hairdressing services in Malta are
being delivered by individuals whose
qualifications are not in line with EU
standards and regulations. Justin continued,
“Our certification means that we can train
individuals to gain a qualification that will
and Learning in Northern Ireland (DELNI) and
the Modern Apprenticeship Implementation
Group (MAIG) in Scotland to include the
restructured NVQ/SVQs.
Finally, in Barbering, the frameworks for the
Apprenticeship/Foundation Modern
Apprenticeship are due for renewal in
England, Wales and Scotland. The take-up for
these frameworks is currently low and Habia
is consulting with the industry through the
Sector Skill Survey to identify if barbers are
aware that they can employ an apprentice
through work-based learning. If you would
like to be involved in the consultation, or
would like more information about
apprenticeships in barbering, please contact
welcomes Malta
allow them to work in other EU countries
which recognise Habia as a leading authority
in the hair and beauty industry”.
Malta sees over 1,170,000 tourists every year,
almost 90% of whom are European. It is
important that salons can provide the same
standard of hairdressing as in the home
countries of the visitors. Many people go on
holiday to be pampered and relax, and for a
significant number that includes hair and
beauty treatments. For Maltese salon owners
and employees, the fact that they have a
qualification which brings them in line with
many other EU countries and will be
recognised can only serve to benefit the
industry.
The official launch of Habia Malta will take
place on 2nd October 2006 in the exclusive
Hilton Malta.

Industry GROWTH
The hair, beauty, nails and spa industries are now collectively worth £4.8 billion a year. Yet we
have to report, serious skills gaps that could threaten future growth and development, still
remain.
Findings from the National Statistics’ Consumer Trends 2005 report reveal that the total turnover
for hair, beauty, nails and spa is now worth £4.8 billion a year (up 10% from the previous year),
with this figure predicted to grow over the next 10 years.
However, Habia’s Skills Foresight report shows that, despite this growth, salon owners are still
reporting difficulties in filling vacancies for most technical roles. Likewise, gaps in selling skills,
client care and business planning are still causing difficulties. Nail salons, African Caribbean
salons and spas in particular also experience high staff turnover, with many staff, especially in
nails, choosing to become self-employed.
Yet despite these issues, which Habia is working to address, hair, beauty, nails and spa continue
to grow. The number of businesses increased 22% to 43,000 from 1999 to 2005, whilst salons
and spas see 500 million clients a year pass through their doors. Likewise, the industries
collectively employ nearly a quarter of a million people.
SKILLS SURVEY
Habia is looking for your views on the state
of the beauty therapy industry with a survey
to establish what skills gaps exist, what
qualifications are needed and the current
level of business performance.
It’s two years since Habia’s last survey into
the beauty therapy industry. On that
occasion, it was revealed that 93% of
businesses were single salons and that there
were high levels of people holding or working
towards a Level 3 qualification. It was also
discovered that use of injectible treatments
was increasing, whilst skills gaps in selling
skills were causing concern. Likewise, there
was growing demand for nail services
qualifications.
Those findings prompted a number of
responses from Habia, including a number of
business guidance books aimed at small
salons and more training materials for Level 3
students. Habia also contributed to a
Department of Health advisory website on
cosmetic treatments such as botox, created a
guide on selling skills and developed new
occupational standards for nail services for
the very first time, which have since led to
specific vocational qualifications for nails.
Now Habia is conducting a new survey to get
an updated picture of the beauty therapy
industry in the UK, look at what has changed
and see how it has developed since 2004. The
results will also allow Habia to target projects
at specific areas and issues of concern, help
raise standards further and support future
growth.
Habia regularly conducts skills surveys to
ensure that standards are updated to meet
industry trends in techniques and equipment
and take into account new legislation.
Similar surveys have recently been completed
into hairdressing and barbering.
The beauty survey is being distributed initially
to 300 salons. However, anyone wishing to
take part can do so by visiting the Habia
website at www.habia.org and completing the
survey online – just follow the links for
Downloads then Surveys. Closing date for
responses is 24 November 2006. The results of
the surveys are expected to be published
early in 2007.
Code of
practice for
WAXING
Acode of practice in waxing that
will provide beauty professionals
with authoritative and industry
endorsed guidance has been
developed by Habia.
The waxing code of practice contains
specific guidance on the use of waxing
systems, usage of products, sensitivity
testing (both thermal and patch testing) and
intimate waxing.
The code also contains clarification on a
range of generic issues such as proper client
consultation, infection control, operational
procedures (including preventing RSI), salon
safety, following manufacturers’ guidance,
insurance, personal protective equipment,
waste disposal and training and education,
as well as a section on health and safety law
and specific guidance for mobile
technicians.
Although compliance with the code will be
voluntary, they will be promoted widely
throughout the beauty industry, as well as
to the consumer press and to Environmental
Health Officers in order to encourage good
practice based on nationally agreed
standards.
The code is available to download from the
Recruitment issues
IN SPA THERAPY
Recruitment and staff turnover are
the biggest issues facing spas in
the UK today, according to a
survey by Habia.
The survey, conducted in early 2006, shows
that staff turnover in spa businesses runs at
71%, whilst 83% of spas have had difficulty
recruiting spa therapists and 70% have had
difficulty recruiting receptionists.
Other issues facing spas include skills gaps in
retail sales (70%), business planning (44%)
and improving client care (44%).
England taking part in the pilot will get to
see Patrick Cameron up close as he
demonstrates the skills that have made him
one the world’s top hairdressers and ask him
questions about his career and his work.
Young Apprenticeships are designed to give
14-16 year olds an understanding of the
hairdressing industry by providing the
opportunity for young people to gain salon
work experience and work towards a Level 2
vocational qualification whilst continuing
with their school studies. Only pupils
predicted to achieve grades A-C in their
GCSEs are eligible and those selected for the
pilot were chosen after interviews with
teachers, training providers and employers.
The launch event, organised by Habia and
Hairdressers Journal, will bring together all
the partners and pupils for the first time on
the Monday of what is the UK’s biggest
celebration of hairdressing.
However, the survey showed a strong
commitment to training across the industry,
with 84% of staff holding a qualification
relevant to their job and 57% of staff
qualified to S/NVQ Level 3 or above. There
was also a high usage of information
technology, with 100% of businesses using
computers and email in their day-to-day
operations.
The survey looked into the skills issues
affecting spa therapy in order to provide an
overview of skills gaps, demand for services
and training matters. Habia will be using the
results of the survey to develop programmes
designed to address the issues identified.
A full copy of the survey report can be found
on the Habia website at www.habia.org by
Habia will also be launching a new
competition – the Young Apprentice of the
Year, open to all those participating in the
pilot.
MASSAGE
consultation
New standards for certain types of
massage could soon be developed after
Habia completed a consultation to gauge
demand amongst the beauty and spa
industry.
Feedback from Habia’s Beauty Therapy
Forum had suggested that there was a
high level of interest from the beauty
and spa industries in various new forms
of massage, particularly stone therapy.
The results of the consultation showed
that over two thirds of respondents
already offer stone therapy, whilst 78%
thought there should be a separate unit
for stone therapy in the standards. 91%
of the respondents stated that
competence in Swedish massage should
be a prerequisite or included in any
qualification for stone therapy, and
nearly one-fifth said they planned to
offer Hawaiian Lomi Lomi massage.
Habia also plans to investigate the
possibility of including a unit dealing
specifically with Repetitive Strain
Industry (RSI), and to look at whether
guidance is necessary covering the
National Insurance implications of using
self-employed therapists whose main or
only source of income is from one
location.
It’s been only two years since Habia East began to offer HIQs in Japan in hairdressing, make-up
and nail services. In that time, we have signed up 44 schools and 107 assessors. At any given
moment, over 1000 learners are working towards their HIQ with Habia East, whilst nearly 1150
have already achieved their HIQ.
Now we are introducing two new HIQs, Aesthetics and Bridal, to expand even further the skills and
knowledge that we are able to offer learners looking to improve their portfolios and prospects.
“The level of support and guidance provided by Habia East in terms of teaching and assessment
Managing success with FOUNDATION DEGREES
Too many managers rely just on their
experience to get them by. In this edition of
Habia News, we look at how foundation
degrees are helping to bring industry-related
management skills into the salon.
There is no doubt that hair and beauty have
been something of a success story over the
past few years. Since 1999, the number of
beauty salons has increased by nearly a third,
whilst the hairdressing industry has an annual
turnover in the billions. Nail services seems to
have appeared out of nowhere, so that there is
now a nail bar on every high street, whilst the
spa industry is beginning to increase its profile
amongst the British public.
In total, hair, beauty, nails and spa earn the UK
economy just under £5 billion a year and
employ over a 250,000 people. Yet despite this,
far too many organisations in our industries
go out of business each year. It is estimated
that over 100 hairdressing salons go out of
business each month, whilst the lifespan of
the average salon is only eight years.
Various skills surveys over the past two years
have shown that there is a lack of people in
management roles who hold any formal
management qualifications (Level 4 or above).
In spa therapy, only 16% of managers have
achieved a qualification at this level, whilst in
nail services, 58% of managers report business
planning as a skills gap. Likewise, in
hairdressing, less than a quarter of managers
have a management qualification, with the
figure being a third of managers in beauty
therapy.
Of course, this does not mean that the
majority of managers without formal
management qualifications in hair, beauty,
nails and spa are bad managers – far from it.
And there are plenty of managers who have
gone on to lead their business to success
without qualifications. However, there are too
many who are missing out and could be taking
their businesses on to even greater success or
making their job that little bit easier.
Why the problem?
So why does this problem exist?
A major problem was that, quite often, the
qualifications simply did not exist. There has
previously been no obvious progression route
from vocational qualifications such as NVQs,
SVQs and Apprenticeships into higher
education and management training that
allows people to specialise in high level
technical skills and business skills.
And where management qualifications do
exist, few have traditionally related directly to
hair, beauty, nails or spa. Of those courses that
are aimed at our industries, many of them are
short courses that only cover a specific aspect
of salon management without looking at the
broader picture and linking all the various
management skills together.
Likewise, many of these qualifications have
not had a commercial or realistic approach to
learning and assessment. As a result, the takeup
in our industries has been very low and
managers in our industries more often than
not learn the hard way – by trial and error.
Whilst learning by experience is undoubtedly
useful and has its part in successfully running
a salon or spa, it works best when combined
with the skills, knowledge and theories that
can be learnt through a formal management
qualification.
Foundation degrees
One of the ways in which the hair, beauty,
nails and spa industries could improve
management skills, and thus improve their
bottom line, customer service and staff
retention, is through foundation degrees.
These are higher education qualifications
available in England that can be studied parttime
while continuing to work in your salon or
spa. Full-time courses are also available.
Teaching management skills and high level
technical skills, foundation degrees provide a
natural progression from Level 3 and
Apprenticeships, with which they offer to
young people a genuine vocational alternative
to traditional A Levels and university.
A number of Foundation degree courses
already exist in management and beauty or
spa therapy. Indeed, the first Foundation
degree, in Hairdressing and Salon
Management, was launched by the University
of Derby in 2003, with the course producing
its first graduates in spring 2006.
Examples of current courses are:
• A distance learning Foundation degree in
Hairdressing and Salon Management at the
University of Derby.
• A Foundation degree in Small Business
Management from the University of
Greenwich that will be contextualised for
hair and beauty salon managers.
• A Foundation degree in Spa and Body
Therapy Management from
Buckinghamshire Chilterns University
College.
• A Foundation degree from Bradford College
in partnership with Leeds Metropolitan
University in Beauty Therapy Salon
Management.
There are also a number of other courses
currently being developed.
The benefits of foundation
degrees
Foundation degrees provide the opportunity
for salon staff to develop the skills and
knowledge required to function at a higher
level in a salon, as well as develop skills such
as independent research, team building, critical
evaluation, analysis and problem solving that
are useful in management roles.
The foundation degrees also have a flexible
approach to delivery through a variety of
learning methods. This means that students do
not have to spend valuable time away from
the salon, and in some cases assessment can
take place in the salon. You can study for a
foundation degree part-time whilst continuing
to work in your salon or spa, developing your
higher level skills that will directly help expand
and grow your businesses and progress your
career into management, franchising or
ownership.
Foundation degrees also allow people in the
hair and beauty industries to receive the same
sort of academic recognition as those in other
professional vocational sectors, such as
engineering. Plus, they provide a clear
progression route from Level 1 up to university
level, and will help attract bright young people
into hair, beauty, nails and spa.
But perhaps the strongest aspect of
foundation degrees is that they haven’t just
been designed with employers in mind – they
have been designed by employers themselves
to ensure that they are relevant to your
business needs.
Employers have been involved at every stage
of the development process to make sure that
foundation degrees bring the higher-level
management skills that are required for
sustained employment within our industries
and to fill the skills gaps identified by the
Habia surveys.
Over the last two years, Habia has worked with
Foundation Degree Forward, higher education
institutions, colleges and employers to develop
sector frameworks for foundation degrees.
These sector frameworks will help ensure that
foundation degrees meet industry agreed
standards, are related to business needs and
are consistent. It is also expected that
universities and higher education institutions
will use the sector frameworks to develop new
foundation degrees and update existing ones.
So the message is clear. If you are serious
about making salon or spa management your
profession, you should consider a foundation
degree. And by increasing the number of salon
and spa staff with management-level
qualifications in our industries, we will
continue to raise standards and profitability.
NAIL SALONS
Health & Safety guidance
Top nails guru Marian
Newman is urging nail salons
to do their bit in helping to
create new health and safety
guidance that will be used
throughout their industry.
Habia is supporting a project by the
Centre for Workplace Health to create
health and safety guidance for nail
technicians. A number of figures from
Habia’s Nail Services Forum, including
Marian and Samuel Sweet, are already
involved and are asking others to do the
same.
Since August, staff from the Centre
have been contacting nail salons in
London, Southampton, Derbyshire and
Yorkshire to learn more about good
working methods and the products nails
professionals work with. As well as
writing to them, Centre staff have
visited a number of salons to speak to
managers, owners and staff.
The information nail salons provide will
form the basis of advice on working
practices that will help benefit and
protect nail services workers and their
customers.
If you have been contacted by the
Centre for Workplace Health but have
not yet responded, please do so as soon
as possible. Findings are confidential
and salons reimbursed for the time
spent taking part.
If you would like to find out more,
Workplace Health on 01298 218803 or
email jade.sumner@hsl.gov.uk
Recent scare stories about nail salons’ use of
MMA, other dangerous chemicals or
practices, have been prominent in the media.
For the vast majority who consistently
exercise high standards and skills, this is
frustrating and damages the reputation of
the industry. With that in mind, Habia has
produced a Code of Practice in nail services
that will provide nail professionals with
authoritative and industry-endorsed
guidance.
The Nail Services Code of Practice contains
guidance on sterilisation, electric nail files
Skills for Nails roadshow in
NORTHERN IRELAND
Nails professionals in Northern Ireland will get the chance this
November to get clued up on the latest techniques and
learn more about qualifications that will help them
improve their career and business.
‘Skills for Nails’, which is open to learners, employers
and suppliers, will focus on the growth of nail services
as an industry, career prospects and training
opportunities, and provide a showcase for teams of
experts to demonstrate the latest nail techniques.
Guests will be able to find out more on City &
Guilds’ new Vocationally Related Qualification
(VRQ), the Diploma in Nail Technology. There will
also be more information on the certificates in
Manicure, Pedicure, Nail Art and Artificial Nail
Structures, which are designed to be short
vocational qualifications, from 100 to 40 guided
learning hours, and are aimed at new learners to
those looking to update existing skills.
The event, which is being hosted by City & Guilds,
Scratch Magazine, Newry Institute and Habia, takes
place on 13 November 2006 at the Newry Institute.
If you would like more information about the qualifications please go to
www.cityandguilds.com.
Tickets for the event will be available from Newry Institute in October.
Changes to Nail Services standards
Habia has made available a new optional unit for the nails professionals using electric files. The new
unit, Level 3 Nail Services BT42 Finish and Maintain Artificial Overlays using Electric Files, was
developed after feedback from the Habia Nail Services Forum that there was a demand for
authoritative guidance on the use of electric files.
The existing unit, BT12 Extend and Maintain Nails, which currently sits in NVQ Level 2 Beauty Therapy
and Nail Services, is to be replaced with new unit BT44 Extend, Maintain and Repair Nails. This will
give learners the option to cover one of three nail systems including wraps, gels and liquid and
powder. Industry feedback had suggested that, commercially, being fully competent in one system
rather than two is what is needed in salons.
A further change is that Unit BT24 Plan, Design and Provide Nail Art Services to Clients, currently a
mandatory unit in NVQ Level 3 Nail Services, will now become an optional unit, reducing the number
of mandatory units from six to five.
All units are available for free download from www.ukstandards.org. For availability, of the units as
qualifications, contact your awarding body or nail services assessment centre.
NAIL SERVICES: A Code of Practice
(including safe use and decontamination of
drills), ventilation and UV light.
Similarly to other Habia codes, these also
have clarification on a range of generic issues
such as proper client consultation, infection
control, operational procedures (including
preventing RSI), salon safety, following
manufacturers’ guidance, insurance, personal
protective equipment, waste disposal and
training and education, as well as a section
on health and safety law and specific
guidance for mobile technicians.
Compliance is voluntary, but Habia has been
Photo:
Nail Artistry by Jefford
Swain & Marsh
working very closely with Environmental
Health Officers to ensure that the codes meet
nationally agreed standards and encourage
good practice. Promotions throughout the
nail industry and consumer press will help to
publicise the initiative and hopefully improve
awareness for clients, employees and salon
owners alike.
Talkboards
You can post comments, questions for
Habia, answers to other people’s questions
or just chat
You can even use the Habia website to talk to
your fellow professionals, stay up to date
with the latest issues and ask Habia the
questions you need answered via the
Talkboards. And we try to answer every
question within three days.
Conversations are known as threads. Check
out the examples below.
From “Just starting off” in general
discussion:
Nicensimple: I am thinking of becoming a
hairdresser. I have the basic skills but still
need to learn a great deal more. Does anyone
know of anywhere else other than the
colleges that offer such training?
Habia MOD: All colleges and training
providers will assess the entry level of
learners and determine a programme that is
most suitable for them – so it doesn't matter
what their level is, beginner or experienced.
Everyone can learn at their required level.
From “Perming” in Hairdressing general
discussion:
fionawhite: Please could anyone advise me
of the status of the perming unit in Levels 1
and 2? I am interested to know what other
colleges are doing now that I believe they are
no longer a mandatory unit.
lillianb: Hi, in order to maintain at least
some skill and knowledge of perming, we are
continuing to teach and train but not assess.
This means that we no longer have to find
an unrealistic number of clients. On the
apprentice programme, if salons wish the
perming unit to be achieved then they have
to supply sufficient clients for practice and
assessment. Hopefully, in this way we can
avoid a skills gap and satisfy the needs of
the employers.
From “Declaration for waxing” in Habia
Scotland general discussion:
Sin: I am a new member and was wondering
if anyone has a declaration suited to waxing
clients only, also to know if there is an age
restriction for performing waxing on
individuals. Many thanks!
Tiffany: Hi Sin, Habia is in the process of
developing a Waxing Code of Practice which
will be available to freely download from the
Habia website in October. It is a good
practice guide covering all aspects of waxing
services including intimate waxing services.
It will cover guidance on age restrictions and
may help you to formulate a declaration to
give clients. Please email me if you would
like to see a draft copy –
tiffany.tarrant@habia.org
So if you are looking for the latest
information from your industry or want to
know about our work, just go to
www.habia.org and browse the website.
Alternatively, you can get actively involved in
discussions, get your questions answered or
help someone else out, by signing up to the
Habia Talkboards. It’s simple and literally
takes a couple of minutes before you can
share your knowledge with hundreds of users
or gain from the vast experience of others.
African Caribbean
CHALLENGE
African type hair businesses are facing a number of
challenges according to the results of a survey conducted by
Habia, with recruitment proving to be the biggest challenge
of all.
Currently, staff turnover runs at 92%, with senior stylists proving
particularly difficult to recruit. Although the survey report described
the industry as buoyant, the report warns that future growth is
dependent upon an adequate supply of trained and qualified staff.
Another factor that may give cause for concern is the usage of
information technology by African-type hair businesses, which is
relatively low compared to other industries such as nail services and
spa therapy. The survey also showed a number of skills gaps, including
beauty therapy treatments (30%), understanding government training
programmes (60%) and marketing and PR (55%).
Despite these concerns, respondents were confident of future business
growth, with 70% expecting to take on more staff in the next 12
months. The survey also showed that 90% of staff had a qualification
relevant to their job role.
Habia has already begun working on some of the issues identified in
the survey with the development of new standards specifically for
African-type hair, which could, in turn, lead to qualifications.
So far, a working group of experts in African-type hair, set up by
Habia, has developed 36 new units for African-type hair over three
levels, as well as new assessment strategies for any qualifications that
will be developed. It is proposed that the term ‘African-type hair’ be
SELLING SKILLS
If you don’t sell to your clients, then someone else
will!
Over 1.5 billion pounds of hair and beauty products
are sold every year in the UK – what
percentage is your business getting?
You can ensure you get your share of
this lucrative market by using the
Selling Skills workbook from Habia as a
training tool in your salon.
The Habia Selling Skills workbook is
made up of six sections giving you the
real tools and techniques that will
revolutionise your business’ sales
performance.
You will be able to develop the skills of
yourself and your team to:
• Recognise sales opportunities
• Sell with confidence and ease
• Create sales orientated
consultations
• Perform effective product
demonstrations
used rather than
‘African Caribbean
hair’, as the
standards refer to a
hair type that is found
amongst all people and is
not just specific to people
from an African Caribbean
background.
Further consultations are
currently being conducted by
Habia into the content of the
units and qualification structures.
The final draft standards will be
submitted to the regulatory
government authorities for final
approval in November 2006. Once
approved, it is likely that vocational
qualifications specifically for Africantype
hair will be developed by awarding
bodies during 2007 with a view to being
launched in 2008.
A full copy of the African Caribbean hair
survey report can be found on the Habia
website at www.habia.org by following
the links for Downloads then Reports.
NEW STARS The Habia Skills Team is embarking on a bright new future
with new appointments and a promotion as it looks forward
to a busy schedule of exhibitions, roadshows and events over
the next 12 months.
Taking the helm will be Erik Lander, who has been promoted to Art
Director. A member of the team since the very beginning, Erik has
demonstrated and taught worldwide, and is a master motivator and
mentor when it comes to hairdressing and barbering skills.
Plus, congratulations to team member MK, who somehow found time in
between helping Habia develop the standards for African-type hair to
win the Battle of the Barbers at this year’s Afro Hair and Beauty Show.
Another new face is Ross Miller. With 15 years’ experience in
hairdressing, Ross has spent the last nine years as artistic director and
training manager at Renella in Falkirk. Having won numerous awards in
his native Scotland and represented names such as Wella on stage, Ross
will be a great asset to the team.
New to the team is Elaine White as team manager. A Senior
Development Manager for Habia since 2001, Elaine brings her 25 years
of hairdressing and teaching experience to the team to make sure all
the work they do on stage relates to salon demands and reflects the
current range of standards and qualifications.
Be inspired:
Last Year’s Salon International was a huge success
The Skills Team will be holding a number of shows throughout 2007
across the UK. You can also book the team to deliver training to your
staff or students, with courses individually tailored to meet your needs
at a location that suits you. Latest training courses include specialised
barbering seminars conducted by Erik, MK and Maurice Lister, author of
Men’s Hairdressing.
For information on the Skills Team, contact Katy Frith at
katy.frith@habia.org. And don’t forget to see them on the Habia stand
TAKING CARE OF
HEALTH & SAFETY
One of the biggest issues affecting
salons and spas today is health and
safety. Inevitably, many only see the
negative side, and salon and spa owners
can perhaps be forgiven for thinking that
health and safety is no more than red tape
imposed from above to trip up the
unsuspecting.
And yet, beyond the legal implications, there
are good business reasons why salon and spa
owners should take a more positive approach.
Getting it wrong can result in legal action or
bad press. But getting it right can show the
kind of dedication and professionalism to
your staff that brings with it a host of real,
measurable business benefits.
Whilst staying within the law and getting it
right is important, there are, of course,
broader issues. How do you look after
yourself? How do you look after your staff?
How do you cut down on ill health and guard
against conditions such as dermatitis and
RSI?
To help raise awareness of all these issues,
Habia will be running a campaign to target
health and safety in salons and spas with
support from organisations such as the
Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and, in the
hairdressing industry, the NHF.
A variety of initiatives are planned for the
next 12 months that will help inform salons
and spas on how to get health and safety
right, how to protect staff and, ultimately,
how health and safety can be made to work
for you.
Health and safety awards
One of the first projects that Habia and the
NHF will be working on together is the Habia
Health and Safety Award. Originally
established in 2000 in partnership with
Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council, the
awards recognise excellence in health and
safety in hair and now beauty salons. Since
then, the awards have grown, and Habia has
formed partnerships with the Health and
Safety Executive and numerous local
authorities to both promote and deliver the
awards.
So how does it work? To receive an award, a
salon must achieve the criteria set out in an
18 point plan. This plan covers health and
safety issues which are legal requirements
and best practice, enforceable by
Environmental Health Officers (EHOs).
Help in meeting the criteria is available, and
those that receive the award are invited to a
presentation that is usually covered by the
local press, generating publicity and increased
business for participating salons. The award is
renewed annually, meaning salons must
achieve the required criteria every year.
Dermatitis
Hairdressing has been identified as the
industry with the highest risk of developing
dermatitis. It has been suggested
that over 70% of
hairdressers have
some form of skin
damage and
that around
half of
all hairdressers will develop dermatitis.
As such, HSE, in partnership with local
authorities across the UK, Habia and NHF, has
developed a project aimed at reducing the
incidence of dermatitis, with a media
campaign in November.
Dermatitis can be caused by repeated or
prolonged exposure to water (wet working)
and by coming into contact with chemicals
present in hairdressing products, such as dyes,
bleaches and shampoos. This can result in
dryness, itching, redness, flaking, swelling and
blistering of the hands, which can be
unsightly, extremely painful and can even
lead to hairdressers having to leave the
industry. It is widely perceived that dermatitis
is an inevitable part of working in this
industry, but this does not have to be the
case.
The campaign, planned for November, will
focus on raising awareness of the problem
and will outline the steps that can be taken
to prevent it. Local authority inspectors will
also play a role, by visiting up to 7,000 salons
across the UK, and by distributing
information packs as part of these visits, as
well as running seminars for local businesses.
It is hoped, following the campaign, that
salon owners can be persuaded to encourage
staff to look after their hands. Hairdressers
should avoid exposure wherever possible and
should routinely wear non-latex gloves when
handling products containing chemicals and
when hands are frequently exposed to water.
Drying hands thoroughly and using
moisturiser regularly is also important, along
with frequent hand checks for early signs of
the condition. By following these simple
steps, the disease can be easily prevented,
which makes good business sense.
Workplace health
Another initiative that Habia and the
NHF are participating in with HSE
initiative is Fit 3, which stands for ‘Fit
for Work, Fit for Life, Fit for Tomorrow’
and aims to reduce accidents and ill
health at work whilst making your
business safer and more profitable.
Habia will be contributing to a number
of presentations across the UK called
Safer Working Communities, with
Habia Health and Safety Manager,
Wendy Nixon, formerly Principal EHO
for Doncaster MBC, speaking on how
businesses and employees can take
responsibility for their own health and
safety to help create a better working
environment, reduce the number of
workplace accidents and reduce the
number of working days lost through
ill health.
Wendy will also be contributing to
another series of HSE presentations,
Your Health: Your Life, to highlight the
seriousness of health and safety in the
workplace and on how to address
issues particular to hair and beauty,
especially dermatitis and musculoskeletal
problems such as Repetitive
Strain Injury (RSI).
Continued from page 16
Lead Authority Status
Another major development is that Habia has
been appointed, along with Doncaster MBC,
as the Lead Authority for the hair and
beauty industries. This means that,
when it comes to inspection of salons
and enforcement of health and safety
law, all local authorities across the UK
will follow the criteria set by Habia and
Doncaster MBC, bringing consistency to a
system that previously differed according
to region. Wendy will be liaising with
Doncaster MBC to develop the
criteria and will be seeking input
from the hair and beauty industries to
create nationally recognised standards in
health and safety – the first time that any
industries in the UK have had the
opportunity to do this.
Health, safety and science
forum
Finally, overseeing everything that
Habia will be doing in terms of
health and safety is the Habia
Health, Safety and Science Forum.
The forum is a focal point for salon
professionals, educators, managers,
manufacturers, as well as health and safety
enforcers and agencies, and makes sure that
any guidance we issue to you and other
businesses is authoritative and accurate.
Our forum is there to evaluate and offer
guidance on legislation, to provide
information on the health and wellbeing of
you and your staff, and to help you reassure
clients who may have concerns. This is
particularly important when you consider the
number of scare stories in the press. If there
are any issues regarding health and safety
that you think need addressing, then you can
submit them to the forum.
Want to know more?
As you can see, Habia, along with partners
such as the NHF, is undertaking a huge
amount of work to help you
deal with health and safety
more effectively, efficiently
and, hopefully, with less
worry. With all these
initiatives, Habia, the NHF
and the HSE hope to
convince salon and spa
owners that health and
safety is not something
that should be feared.
Rather, it is something
that should be
embraced and that
can bring business
benefits.
Habia produces Health and Safety
Implementation Packs for hair, beauty and
nails that can help you successfully
implement good health and safety practice in
a simple, no-nonsense way. We also have a
Health and Safety Club which keeps you up
to date with the latest changes to legislation
and guidance.
Cost of the pack and club is just £99.00.
Be vigilant
Security forces are asking
hairdressing suppliers to be
vigilant when it comes to the
sale of certain chemicals that
can be used in the
manufacture of explosives.
Since the London bombings on 7 July 2005,
concerns have been raised regarding the
availability of a number of chemicals that
can be used as ingredients in home-made
explosives, in particular hydrogen peroxide,
which is commonly found in hairdressing
salons.
The National Counter Terrorism Security
Office (NaCTSO) has launched a campaign,
Know Your Customer, to help suppliers
identify any purchases which they consider
suspicious.
Suppliers are asked to consider the following
things when dealing with a purchase of
hydrogen peroxide:
Is the customer known to you?
Do they fit the usual profile of your
customers? Is there a reluctance to give
contact details? Is the person evasive?
Are they familiar with the product?
Do they know the uses and properties of the
products they are purchasing? Are there
handling conditions? Does this person know
what they are?
Habia is providing salon and spa owners in
Scotland interested in training students inhouse
with inspiration, thanks to a free DVD
offering advice, information and interviews
with those already involved in workplace
learning.
Promoting Workplace Learning is a
collaborative project between Sector Skills
Councils and Standards Setting Bodies such
as Habia to promote cost-effective and
relevant workplace learning. It aims to equip
Is the order for products in unusual
quantities or concentrations?
Either small or excessively large in
comparison to regular orders? Is the strength
of the product suitable for the purpose the
customer has declared? Do they have
legitimate use for the product?
Is this an unusual or odd combination of
chemicals?
Are these chemicals listed as precursors for
home-made explosives and/or drugs use? Are
the chemicals listed in the Chemical
Industries Association, British Chemical
Distributors and Traders Association Code of
Conduct.
Does the customer want to pay in cash?
Regardless of the value of the order? Does
the customer have a credit card?
Delivery
Does the customer wish to collect the
chemicals? Does the customer request the
purchase in small containers, where goods are
said to be for industrial use? Is the customer
collecting the chemicals in a private vehicle?
Is there a known delivery address? Is the
customer requesting delivering via a strange
or dubious route?
If you are suspicious
Consider asking a customer making a
telephone enquiry to support the enquiry
with a fax. If you can, delay the process;
employers with the knowledge and
information to consider workplace learning
for their own businesses, regardless of size or
location.
As part of the DVD’s development, Habia
arranged for salon and spa owners and
managers to be filmed talking about how
workplace learning has worked for them and
improved their businesses, whilst staff
discussed how learning in a work
environment has developed their skills.
offer to ring back after checking stock
availability or asking for credit card details.
If you have any concerns about a purchase,
you should inform the Anti-Terrorist Hotline
on 0800 789 321.
You are also advised to record as much detail
as possible, such as descriptions of the
individuals, details of any vehicles used and
contact details. You should also retain any
CCTV images.
therapy).
2,000 free copies of the DVD are being
distributed to hair, beauty, nails and spa
businesses throughout Scotland this year.
Promoting Workplace Learning was officially
launched to employers and key stakeholders
at Napier University, Craiglockhart Campus,
Edinburgh, at the end of June 2006. Habia
was asked to nominate someone to deliver a
short speech describing the benefits of
workplace learning to employees, and was
delighted that John Akram, from Renella,
Falkirk, was able to talk about the impact of
workplace learning from his perspective as an
employee.
Development of the DVD was conducted by
21 Sector Skills Councils (SSCs) and six Sector
Skills Bodies (SSBs) in partnership with
learndirectScotland, Futureskills Scotland and
Sector Skills Alliance Scotland (SSAScot). Cosponsors
for the project were the Scottish
Executive and the European Structural Fund.
Specialised Diplomas
Every edition of Habia News we will
bring you an update on Specialised
Diplomas, how they are developing
and latest news. We will also answer the
key questions that many of you have been
asking.
Habia asks employers for views
on work experience
Habia is asking employers for their views on
work experience in the specialised Diplomas.
Work experience will be a key feature of all
Diplomas and each will require at least 10
days spent in the workplace for each level of
the programme. This will focus on developing
generic skills, such as self-management and
team working, so could, in principle, be
undertaken with any employer.
Habia has the opportunity to set specific
requirements for work experience as part of
the Diploma and is asking for opinions on
this.
To make your views known, go to talkboards
for Specialised Diplomas at www.habia.org,
following the links for Talkboards.
DfES issues statement on health
and safety concerns over work
experience
The Department for Education and Skills
(DfES) has issued a statement to address
concerns from employers worried about the
health and safety considerations of having
14-16 years olds in their workplaces.
The DfES statement reads: “We believe it is
important that young people have some
exposure to the real workplace in order to
develop an understanding of what is required
of them in that environment.
In order to provide young people with
10 days work experience in the
Diploma programme, we will
build on the current
programmes: we currently
have half a million
work-experience
placements a year for
14-16 year olds, and
350,000 of these are
arranged by
Government-supported
brokers (Education
Business Partnerships and
Trident).
We recognise that health and
safety issues, particularly for the
under-16s, remain a major concern to
employers, despite the guidance that already
exists. We will be working to ensure that
employers providing work experience to
Diploma candidates get the support they
need and that the content of the Diplomas
lends itself to work experience which is
appropriate for the age and experience of
the young people”.
The statement coincides with the
announcement by the Health and Safety
Executive (HSE) that European Week of
Health and Safety 2006 will focus on young
people at work. The event, which will carry
the slogan Safe Start, runs from 23-27
October and will be used to highlight the
health and safety modules and training the
Specialised Diplomas will offer both young
people and training providers.
Specialised Diplomas
your questions answered
Q. What are Specialised Diplomas?
A. Specialised Diplomas are qualifications
that will provide an exciting, stretching and
relevant programme of learning for young
people of all backgrounds and abilities. They
will offer a real alternative to traditional
learning styles through an imaginative, high
quality blend of general education and
applied learning. Each Diploma will contain
pathways to accommodate a wide range of
aspirations so that they will appeal to
students preparing for the most demanding
university courses and to students planning
to enter the workforce directly from their
Diploma studies. They will be suitable for
young people who enjoy the challenge and
stimulation of developing knowledge and
skills in a real world environment.
Q. When will Specialised Diplomas be
available and in what subjects?
A. The first of the new Specialised Diplomas
will be available for teaching across England
in September 2008 in IT, Engineering, Health
and Social Care, Construction and the Built
Environment and Creative and Media.
A further five sets of Diplomas will be
available from September 2009; in Hair and
Beauty, Land-based and Environmental,
Business Administration and Finance,
Manufacturing and Hospitality and Catering;
The final four lines will be available from
September 2010; in Public Services, Sport and
Leisure, Retail and Travel and Tourism.
Q. How are the Diplomas being developed?
A. Employers, through Diploma
Development Partnerships (DDPs), are
leading the design of the Diplomas.
DDPs are led by Standards Setting
Bodies (SSBs) and Sector Skills
Councils (SSCs), bringing
together employers, further
and higher education
institutions, schools
and awarding
bodies. Awarding
Bodies will then
develop the
qualifications in
partnership with
the DDPs. The
Qualifications
and Curriculum
Authority (QCA)
is working on
the design
principles
and standards for the Diplomas and will be
responsible for accrediting the Diplomas prior
to them becoming available to be taught by
schools, colleges and other providers. Habia is
leading development of the hair and beauty
diplomas.
Q. When can we see the content of the
Hair and Beauty Diploma?
A. The consultation on the draft content will
take place in October and November 2006.
To take part, go to the Specialised Diploma
section by clicking on the menu at
www.habia.org.
Q. What will the Diploma contain?
A. The Hair and Beauty Specialised Diploma
will combine a range of generic and specific
theory, knowledge and practice, related to
employment within the hair, beauty and
related industries.
The content is still under development, with
significant input from industry through the
wider consultation events and the Habia
website. The sector coverage within the
Diploma is extensive, allowing learners to
peruse a variety of career pathways, including
Nail Technician, Receptionist, Manager,
Barber, Trichologist, TV and film
Hairdresser/Make-up artist, Manufacturer’s
Technician and so on.
Central to the sector specific learning is the
development of personal learning and
thinking skills, which will form the spine of
the whole
qualification.
‘The Specialised
Diplomas will ensure
learners gain a qualification
that can now lead them directly
into Higher Education via a
vocational route or an elevated
position within industry’.
Margaret Butfield, Curriculum
Manager – Hairdressing,
Cornwall College,
St Austell
‘This is the light
bulb many young
learners will have been
waiting for; it will be
different, diverse and fun’
Also running through the principal learning
will be a common core, identified by industry
as the employability skills recognised as
needed for development of a successful
career in the hair and beauty sector. They
have been grouped under ten key headings.
1. Willingness to Learn
2. Teamwork
3. Flexible Working
4. Customer Care
5. Positive Attitude
6. Personal and Professional Ethics
7. Self Management
8. Creativity
9. Communication Skills
10. Leadership
During the development of the Diplomas, the
content is being linked to the sectors’
National Occupational Standards and Codes
of Practice.
HABIA CYMRU
presents to Welsh government
Hairdressers in Wales were given the chance to put their
case to the Welsh Assembly Government at an event set up
by Habia in Cardiff this July.
The presentation was organised by Habia Cymru at the request of
Christine Chapman, Deputy Education and Lifelong Learning Minister
for Wales, to give hairdressers from the principality the opportunity to
raise awareness of the success of hairdressing, the prospects it gives
young people and its contribution to the Welsh economy.
Researchers and politicians from various groups were in attendance at
the National Assembly for Wales to meet with and hear speeches from
a variety of key figures in Welsh hairdressing.
Delegates included Dodi Constantinou, Lloyd Griffiths and Mark Coray
of the UK World Cup Hairdressing Team, who talked about the team’s
recent success at the World Hairdressing Championships, and Shirley
Davis Fox, managing director of I-SA Training, who presented a report
on a joint project with Habia to create new 14-19 Learning Pathways
for Wales.
There were also presentations from Habia representatives Clive
Howells, consultant for Habia Cymru, and Alan Goldsbro, Habia chief
executive.
Standards available
IN WELSH
Learners in Wales are now one step closer to being able to study for
hair, beauty, nails and barbering qualifications in Welsh after Habia
Cymru completed a project to have the national occupational
standards translated into Welsh.
The translated standards will help training centres and assessors
meet the requirements of the Welsh Language Act and deliver
learning programmes where the first language of the majority of the
students is Welsh. Available so far are hairdressing and beauty
therapy at Levels 1, 2 and 3, nail services at Levels 2 and 3, and
barbering at Level 2.
The Habia Cymru forum brings together representatives from across
the hair and beauty industry in Wales to address key issues and
develop plans to put Welsh hairdressers and beauty therapists at the
forefront of hair and beauty in the UK. The forum allows the hair
and beauty industries in Wales a say in Habia initiatives that directly
affect them, such as the development of new qualifications, and
allow representatives to raise matters of specific concern.
Both the Welsh language and the English language standards can be
Beverley C dvd –
set of four
The Nuovo Collection
With clear and simple
explanations, and a good range
and variety of techniques used,
Beverly C has created a training
guide that will prove invaluable
to stylists looking to update their
skills or those who have just
completed their Level 3 but want
to go one step further.
Programme 1 -
• This long layered cut shows
the use of an asymmetric
frame around the face, giving
a different look to a beautiful
long cut.
• Based on the BI-Level, this
short cut shows the contrast
of a heavy full fringe that is
cut back short.
Programme 2 -
• This sassy jaw-length cut
shows perimeter layering and
short choppy layers at the
crown to
give a great textured effect.
• Undercutting and razored
layering give extra dimension
to this short stylish cut.
Programme 3 -
• Short blunt layers and
perimeter graduation
enhances this mid-length cut.
The rounded outline shape and
full asymmetric fringe gives a
trendy edge to the shape.
• A full razor-cut is a great
alternative to the classic bob
shape. Razored layers give a
soft texture and maintain a
soft outline shape.
Programme 4 -
• This programme demonstrates
two different cuts and the
essential use of colour
techniques to enhance the line
of the cut. Colour Veiling and
Perimeter Colour Placement are
the two key techniques used.
NVQ Level 2 Cutting
programme
A hairstyle involves competent
cutting, setting, dressing or blowdrying,
but with the main
emphasis on the cut, which
requires balance, line and
movement to complement the
head shape and facial features.
The techniques demonstrated in
this cutting programme will
enable you to design workable
and attractive hair shapes and
styles to suit each individual
client. These techniques are
considered to be the basic
foundation of all haircutting.
Patrick Cameron Show
Collection
Patrick Cameron is proud to
present 12 step-by-steps on DVD
taken from his stage show
collection "Provocateur", "Cream"
and "Ladies Who Lunch". These
styles, while being cutting edge
and highly fashionable, are
nevertheless very commercial and
accessible and the techniques
taught will be invaluable to
anyone serious about dressing
long hair. Along with the DVD,
you will receive 3 booklets
containing the step by steps from
each collection.
Saks part 1
Long Addict
Focusing on a centre parting, this
textured cut uses layering
techniques to avoid hard lines
and create volume. The Bling
colour technique takes
colouration to excess with
contrasting panels and the option
for clashing shades.
Short Addict
Random carving and chopping of
the hair is used to create
contrasting lengths. The Burst
colour techniques give a tripletoned
colour effect with
contrasting root to tip colouration.
Texture Addict
Texture is exaggerated using a
combination of short and long
layers. The Blast colour
techniques give shocks of colour
throughout a shape.
Texture Addict (Men’s)
Ideal for the man who invests in
a great cut but doesn’t want to
flaunt his style. The hair is worn
undone, unstructured, loose and
relaxed.
