At Mercy High School, these standards rest securely
on the pillars of FAITH, KNOWLEDGE, and
SERVICE. Everything we do at this school is
geared to enhancing these three attributes in all of
our students, so that they will become the graduates
described above. This is a tall order, in anyone’s
estimation.
While I am and remain grateful for the amazing
support of all of our constituencies, it is the
effectiveness of our faculty and staff—their
expertise and dedication—and the response of our
students that sets my heart on fi re!
From July 1, 2007 through June 30, 2008 the story
of support for Mercy High School’s mission as
outlined above is presented here for your enjoyment
and enlightenment.
You will be inspired by the breadth and depth of our
many donors and friends; you will be encouraged
and proud of the accomplishments of outstanding
faculty and our Mercy girls. You will have an
insider’s glance at the Mercy girl’s unique journey on
her way to becoming a Woman of Mercy.
Mother Catherine McAuley is famous for her work
on behalf of women and children, but also for the
many teachings, insights, and quotes she left us for
guidance in our daily ministries. One of these is
most meaningful in relation to this annual report:
“There is very little good can be accomplished or
evil avoided without the aid of money. We must
look after it in small as well as in great matters.”
This annual report is our effort to give you, our
donors and constituents, a sound overview of how
‘money’ relates our ministry.

and consumer science. Mercy is technologically sound with a student

The following was written and
presented at the Donors of Distinction
Dinner by Senior Nicole Mixan
I can not express how delighted I am
to have the opportunity to speak to
you - the people who have helped
change my life and the lives of 350
of my closest friends. Your dedication
to our Mercy community has reaped
benefi ts for many beautiful people, actions and creations. I
am so lucky and so proud to consider myself one of those
beautiful people shaped by the Sisters of Mercy. Actually,
I like to consider myself a Mercy success story - someone
who has been endlessly and positively infl uenced by this
wonderful community you have helped build.
My Mercy success story began the night before the fi rst
day of my freshman year. I spent the evening nervously
wondering what was awaiting me at my new school. I had
no idea that I would be given the
chance to grow as a whole person.
I had no idea that I would transform
from a shy and intimidated girl into
the confi dent young woman I am
today. No, I was not always as selfconfi
dant and outgoing as I am now.
Mercy helped me discover the tools
I was already equipped with to build
God’s kingdom - the shy girl I was my
freshman year had no intentions of becoming Senior class
president and she defi nitely had no idea that she would
be honored to portray Catherine McAuley on September
24 th . It was within these four walls that I was challenged on
a day-to-day basis to exceed the limits I thought existed.
My peers, my teachers and my coaches provided me with
the opportunities to be all I could be. Mercy has changed
me for the better. The change within me is not complete
either - Mercy is still pushing me to better myself spiritually,
intellectually, and physically each and every day.
Catherine McAuley once said that the best way to educate
the world is through the proper education of young women.
I am a testimonial that these words are fully embraced
by this school. And I am not the only confi rmation of this
belief. Everyday I am inspired by my classmates and
the wonderful things they do for their families, churches,
and communities. As a school we raised money to build
schools in foreign countries, we donated cans of food and

diapers for unfortunate families, and we did much, much
more. These acts of justice and charity would not be
possible without your support. I believe the greatest lesson
we receive from a Mercy education is the message and
the call of service. Mercy girls understand that true service
goes beyond what you can count in hours on a little yellow
slip of paper. It is found within the small things - the little
moments - when you are blessed with the opportunity to
be a servant, like Christ, for another person. We have you
to thank for this understanding.
Negotiated tuition enables girls like myself to be blessed
with a Mercy education. I know I would not be here if it
were not for the help my parents received when fi nancing
my education. The Sisters of Mercy were founded to give
young women the chance at an education that they would
never have. Catherine McAuley took young women into
her care, and taught them the skills that they would need
to support themselves. Over 150 years later, the same
thing is happening right here in Omaha, Nebraska. And I
can’t even begin to express my thanks
to all those who have helped to support
this program, not only for me, but for
every girl who could not attend Mercy if
it weren’t for negotiated tuition.
There is a spirit in this building -- it’s
alive and burning with a passion for
life. You are the people who spark
the fl ames within each Mercy girl’s
soul --- you have given them a gift that continues to keep
giving: an education. You have, to quote Charles Dickens,
“recalled them to life” and enabled them to lead a positive,
Christian life. I would like to give you a gift in return for the
generous donations you have made for us. This gift is not
one that can be wrapped or priced. My gift to you is one
of gratitude and promise. I sincerely thank you from the
bottom of my heart for the blessing you have bestowed
upon us. Thank you from my parents, my teachers and
the rest of my peers here at Mercy. My promise to you
-- my promise is a guarantee that I will use the talents and
treasures I have discovered at Mercy to better the world.
I promise my classmates will do the same - wherever
God’s plan may take us - we will be a beacon of light and
hope for this world. The gift you have given our Mercy
community will be multiplied tenfold, I promise. May God
bless you and your families. And thank you, once again,
for the wonderful things you have done for this world.
