Glaciers, Mountains and Stunning Lakes
Voted “The World’s Most Spectacular Mountain Drive,” over 100 glaciers line
the Icefields Parkway’s western side—they feed turquoise colored lakes and
thundering waterfalls. The Ice Explorer tour at the Columbia Icefield (with time
to walk on a glacier) is the Canadian Rockies’ most popular attraction.
If you begin in Banff or Lake Louise, drive to the Icefields and return the same
day or continue to Jasper and stay overnight. From Jasper, it’s one hour to the
Columbia Icefields and two hours to the Crowfoot Glacier (without stops)—
return to Jasper, or overnight in Lake Louise or Banff.
suggested sites). Start with a full tank of gas.
211 Beat St or Bear’s Paw Bakery, 610 Connaught Dr or 4 Cedar Ave in
Wildlife: Sometimes grizzly bears, bighorn sheep and caribou graze on
roadsides (best sighting opportunities are early mornings). Elk are often
near Jasper. Watch for mountain goats on cliff faces.
