Holy of Holies
Hebrew 10:19-22
19 Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the
holy places by the blood of Jesus, 20 by the new and living way
that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his
flesh, 21 and since we have a great priest over the house of
God, 22 let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of
faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and
our bodies washed with pure water.
The Old Testament sacrifices were just a symbol or a shadowy
experience of what was to come. But the reality is what Jesus did
for us on the cross. Worship is just a process of moving from one level to the other. Many a
times we try to worship God in a way we want to. But yet we are unable to connect ourselves
fully with Him. There is a process which when followed can help us prepare ourselves getting
closer to God.
1. Gate: This is the first place through which one can enter the tabernacle. When I pray,
first of all I believe Jesus. I confess and proclaim that I am a child of God. You cannot
enter the presence of God without Jesus. Only through Him you can come into His
presence.
2. Altar: This is the next step. Here we tie ourselves to the horns of the altar. We need to
place ourselves at the altar as a living sacrifice. We need to ask God to send down His
fire which will consume us of all the unwanted things in our life.
3. Basin: This is the next place where we come to. Here we wash our hands and feet. This
is the place where we actually wash ourselves from sin by the blood of Jesus.
4. Holy place: Finally you enter the Holy place. In the holy place there are three things
placed:
Lamp stand: The priest was required to trim the wick of the lamp. This
represents asking God to remove all the bitterness that is present in our lives.
Table of Showbread: This Bread represents the Word of God. We are supposed
to read the Word at all times. We must meditate on the Word of God.
Altar of Incense: The altar of incense reminds us that we need to thank and
praise God at all times. God doesn’t want us to meet ungodly people. David
says, ‘’I will enter His gates with thanksgiving in my heart”.
We then move on the Most Holy place. Here there is a veil. This was the hindrance and it
divided the holy place and the Holy of Holies. But when Jesus was on the cross, the veil was
torn into two. It tore from top to the bottom. If the veil had to be torn from the bottom
upwards, it would mean that man did it. But the very fact that the veil tore from top to the
bottom shows that it was God who removed that hindrance. By offering His body for us on the
cross, He tore the curtain.
Holy of Holies
 Ark of the Covenant
This was a covenant that God made with Abraham. It was a small box and was kept in the
most Holy place. This is the most important thing that we must understand as the children
of God. The Bible is divided into two parts, the Old Testament and the New Testament. The
Old Testament represents the Old Covenant between God and man while the New
Testament represents the New Covenant between God and man. God spoke to Moses to
keep three things in the ark.
Hebrews 9:4
4 having the golden altar of incense and the ark of the covenant covered on all sides with
gold, in which was a golden urn holding the manna, and Aaron’s staff that budded,
and the tablets of the covenant.
The Ten Commandments: This was an agreement between God and man. It was legal. It
had terms and conditions that man had to follow.
Vessel of Manna (Divine Provision): When the Israelites were wandering about in the
desert for forty years, the Lord sustained them with manna i.e. food sent for them from
Heaven. This was kept preserved in a vessel as a remembrance of what the Lord did for
the children of Israel.
Aaron’s rod (Election): Numbers 16: Aaron’s rod had to be kept in the ark. This
represented he had favor from God since his rod was chosen among the others.
In the same way, the New Testament is made between God and man. Through the blood of
Jesus, we have His provision and protection.
Shekinah Glory
In the most Holy Place, there were no windows or doors. This place was always lit by the
Shekinah glory of God. No one could enter this place except for the most High Priests.
Cherubim:
God told Moses to place two angels called the cherubim above the tabernacle. When Adam and
Eve had sinned in the Garden of Eden, God placed the two cherubim at the entrance of the
garden so that they would not enter the place again. They represent the Judgment of God.
When the priest looks at it, he realizes that he is standing in the presence of the Most High God.
The ultimate purpose of our worship is to get real close with God. We must feel His power and
His anointing, or else our worship is useless. In the Holy of Holies, only the priest was allowed to
serve God. The Jews were allowed to enter the gate, the High Priest could enter the Holy Place
but it was only the high Priest who could enter the Most Holy Place. When the High Priest
would enter, he would do so with a lot of fear. If the priest did not live a holy life or if he was
found with sin, he would get punished by God. In some cases, they would even die. For this
reason, they would tie a rope around their waist. The other end of the rope was out. In case the
priest did face death, his body could be pulled out by the other end of the rope. The most high
priest could however enter the most holy place only once a year with the blood of the lamb.
But now because of the death of Jesus on the cross, we are now in the Most Holy Place.
Because Christ is in you, you can begin your spiritual journey right early in the morning.
When you worship God, His light will shine on you. When Moses came down from the
mountain, his face was shining bright so much so that he had to cover his face with a veil. The
people around him were not able to look at his face. But now the veil has been removed and
we can boldly enter into God’s presence without any fear.
He is a loving God. He has made an eternal covenant with us. We are the chosen generation.
When Jesus was arrested, almost all disciples left Him. But Peter followed Him at a distance.
This was more dangerous. We cannot sail in two boats. Peter even denied Jesus thrice. But Paul
challenges everyone to come closer to God. He tells us to walk with Him daily. We shouldn’t be
afraid of Him anymore.
Make Jesus your best friend.
