Festival Headliner

Monday 2 May

Imelda May

Millennium Forum 8pm £39.50

Born and raised in the The Liberties

area of Dublin, Imelda May has

become one of Ireland’s most

celebrated female artists. Following

an appearance on ‘Later...with Jools Holland’,

Imelda has since staged her own sold out

tours across the UK, Ireland, Europe, North

America and Australia, performing for royalty,

presidents and at major events around the

world. Imelda has collaborated with legendary

artists such as Lou Reed, Bono, Elvis Costello,

Jeff Beck, Van Morrison, Robert Plant and

has performed on Hollywood actor Jeff

Goldblum’s debut jazz album.

Imelda’s latest album ‘Life Love Flesh Blood’,

produced by the legendary T-Bone Burnett,

was a departure from her rockabilly revival

style with a bold new sound that sits firmly

outside of any sharply defined genre box,

widely spanning blues, rock, soul, gospel

and jazz. The most personal and honest

album she’s ever written is filled with songs

of heartbreak, desire, loss, and liberation

and was the 5th best-selling female album

globally in 2017.

Spotlight on Jazz

Linley Hamilton Quintet

Returning as part of their Irish Tour, the

band has reassembled to record a new

album in early May, a follow-up to their

hugely successful ‘For the Record’, which

spent ten weeks in the US Jazzweek charts

and amassed critical acclaim worldwide.

The band is made up of Adam Nussbaum,

drums, Mark Egan bass, Cian Boylan piano,

Derek ‘DOC’ O’Connor sax and Linley

Hamilton trumpet. As an ensemble, they

combine beautifully and create a musical

narrative that had packed houses in Dublin,

Moscow and Cork rising to their feet in

standing ovation in 2020…Expect more of

the same this time and book early so as not

to be disappointed!

Spotlight on Jazz

Randy Ingram Trio

U.S. pianist and composer hailed as gifted

(Jazz Times) and a formidable composer

(The San Francisco Chronicle). Randy

Ingram was born in Alaska and relocated

with his family to Laguna Beach, California.

A piano student since the age of four,

Ingram’s passion for jazz blossomed in

high school, when he formed his first

trio and then progressed to a Bachelor’s

degree in Jazz Performance and a Masters

in Music. A recipient of the ASCAP Young

Jazz Composer’s Award, Ingram has

established himself as an integral part of

the NYC music community. In the words of

his mentor Fred Hersch, “Randy Ingram is

among the vanguard of young jazz pianists

on the New York scene. He plays with

finesse, thoughtfulness and passion.”

Tom Ollendorff

“Guitarist Tom Ollendorff has been fast

building a reputation as an outstanding

improviser and imaginative composer.

His album ‘A Song For You’ (Fresh Sound

Records) is an elegantly accomplished mix

of gracefully grooving songlike themes,

warmly conversational improvising,

baroque-like unaccompanied etudes, and

headlong fast-bop swing.”

H H H H BBC Music Magazine

“Tom Ollendorff is one of the world’s finest

guitarists. His music is complex yet rooted

in melody and feeling.” Gilad Hekselman

“Traditional, but very classy.” The Guardian

“On ‘A Song For You’, Ollendorff presents

sophisticated, melodic music of seraphic

beauty.” All About Jazz

musicians from Canada, UK, USA, Ireland and other parts of

Europe.

Gay McIntyre was a Derry man at heart, and loved to perform on

his home turf, sharing his knowledge and talent both locally and

Education Programme

Live Music Now

Putting the ‘fun’ into funky for local

school-children. Almost 1500 children

across Derry and Strabane will get a fun

and funky ‘taste of jazz’ with Live Music

Now’s schools programme in the run-up

to the 2022 festival. Between March and

May, pupils at 15 primary schools will

experience jazz taster performances in

their school hall, delivered by pianist

John Leighton and singer / saxophonist

Meilana Gillard.

John and Meilana are familiar faces on the

Northern Irish jazz scene, though Meilana

hails from Ohio originally. Together they

make a big sound, with Meilana’s gutsy,

soulful vocals and John’s funky piano

playing. The short performances will be

interactive and fun, including familiar

jazz standards, and will be a perfect

introduction to jazz for wee ones.

Our Place in Space

Bay Road & River Foyle

Fri 22 April - Sun 22 May

Our Place in Space is an epic scale model

of the solar system designed by the

artist Oliver Jeffers. It combines a threedimensional

sculpture trail, interactive

AR app and exciting learning and events

programmes. Our Place in Space is a

playful experiment that asks: What is the

difference between ‘US’ and ‘THEM’? What

happens to your perspective when you

look back at earth from space? Our Place

in Space is led by Nerve Centre and is

part of UNBOXED: Creativity in the UK, a

ground-breaking UK-wide celebration of

creativity that will bring people together

and reach millions through ten major multisite

and digital creative projects in 2022.

Our Place in Space is one of five projects

that will take place in Northern Ireland.

8th Annual DLD Second Line

Jazz Parade

Meeting Point: Castle Street • Ending Point: Waterloo Place

Sat 30 April 12noon

Route: Castle Street, Waterloo Street, Strand Road,

right on Great James Street - pass the City Hotel

and wave, around the roundabout, swing by the Post

Office on Guildhall Street, make a right and end in

Waterloo Place.

Hello all you second liners! Who feels like funking it

up this year? I know we are! Grab your umbrellas and

your dancing shoes and meet us on Castle Street for

this year’s DLD Second Line jazz parade. This year

is special in so many ways... this year marks the 10th

anniversary of Second Line NI and our musicians

being together for this project. It marks the moment

we are coming back together, after 2 years apart, to

bring our music back to the streets. What better way

to celebrate than to strut our stuff down Waterloo

Place once again. We’re doin’ it proper, so

come on down and join us.
