The Thoughts of the Chairman
Dear Members,
John J Shanahan,
Chairman
The new sporting seasons are nearly upon us
and I can see that there has already been some
serious pre-season training going on in some
of the Sections. I look forward to another successful
sporting year ahead and the addition of some new
silverware for our trophy cabinets.
The public consultation exercise on Private
Recreational Leases (PRL) closes on the 19th
September, and I now make a final plea to you all, and
anybody else who uses our facilities, to write to the
Home Affairs Bureau at prl_consultation@hab.gov.hk
stating how important it is for sports development in
Hong Kong to have the Football Club and objecting
to the imposition of a percentage of the Full Market
Value (FMV) of our site upon lease renewal. The FMV
charge could cost us, and the other PRL holders,
millions of dollars and not only have an adverse effect
on sports development in Hong Kong but also require
us to charge substantially more in entrance fees,
subscriptions and food and beverage, as well as for
the use of our facilities. Please note we currently allow
the National Sports Associations and charities free use
of our facilities, and other Eligible Outside Bodies such
as schools, discounted rates, we would be forced to
charge these bodies a going rate to offset some of
the effects of the FMV charge. In a separate survey, I
once again urge you all to respond to the Task Force
on Land Supply online questionnaire and object to the
Government taking back the PRL sites for housing.
Talking of surveys I know many of you will have
completed the (F&B) Outlet’s Satisfaction Survey forms.
I have heard mention from some Members that they
have had no response from the Club re the points/
comments they have raised. Whilst it is difficult to be
able to reply to the hundreds of forms received, please
be assured they have all been looked at and action
taken where required and, if applicable.
In closing, may I remind you, yet again, about the
use of Electronic Communication Devices, especially
Mobile Phones, within the Clubhouse. I have lost
count of the number of people I have asked to stop
using their phones in the building in the last few weeks.
No more warnings ladies and gentlemen; the minimum
$200 fine will be levied from now on.
From the Desk of Mark Pawley
Mark Pawley,
General Manager
The Chairman has noted in his article that
another sporting season is nearly upon
us. As such, it is therefore timely that I
should remind Members, as I always do
at this time of the year, that you should not leave
valuables or personal belongings lying unattended
around the Club. The Attendants on duty in the
Changing Rooms on the 1/Fl, 2/Fl and in the Infield
are able to secure your valuables and we can provide
Day Lockers, if required. As regards the Infield and,
more specifically, the Main Pitch, parents are again
advised to supervise their children at all times
especially from “playing” on the Pitch on Match
days! Grounds Staff have been told to remove
children from the “dead-ball” areas on the Main
Pitch during matches, in particular on Rugby days, I
would also remind you that parental supervision
of children (especially those under 11 years of
age) also extends to the Sportsman’s Bar and its
environs as it does to all other areas/facilities of
the Club!
And, for those of you who will be playing sports
this season please see the reminder at the
foot of the page notice ensuring that you all
have adequate medical and personal accident
insurance.
On the food and beverage front, we hold the Grace
Vineyard Wine Dinner on Friday 28th September –
this is a first for the Club where wines from the Grace
Vineyard in Shanxi province, China, are paired with
a menu put together by Chef Massimo. As always,
please book early to avoid disappointment.
Last, and by no means least, good luck to all our
teams and players engaged in representative sports
in the forthcoming season. Let’s hope you can bring
home some silverware?
I look forward to seeing you all at the Club!
Mark Pawley,
General Manager
NOTICE TO MEMBERS:
Medical and Personal Accident Insurance
The Club would like to take this opportunity to remind all of
its Members to ensure that they have adequate medical and
personal accident insurance in place when playing any sport.
We would like to remind Members that it is not the Club’s
responsibility to provide its Members or any other persons using
its facilities, or playing on behalf of the Club, with insurance in
respect of personal injuries sustained, or any other damage
caused when playing sport. This applies to all sporting activities,
including matches, practices and social games howsoever
connected with the Club.
Anyone playing sport should consult an insurance broker to
arrange comprehensive personal insurance such as:
• Medical coverage to insure the Member or player in respect of
any medical treatment required; and
• General accident coverage providing payment to the Member
or player for any serious accident or liability insurance for injury
or damage caused to others.
Squash News
Jesters Touring team at HKFC
July 2018
On Sunday 15th and Tuesday 17th July, HKFC played host to a
group of Jesters touring from the North of England with a couple
of Scottish Jesters bolstering their top order. They certainly were no
fools, well accomplished on the squash court, with a great sporting
attitude and a pleasure to spend time with both on and off the court.
The Jesters, founded in England in 1929, now has over 3,000 members,
with branches in the USA, South Africa and Canada. Membership is
by invitation, candidates are selected on the basis of playing ability,
sportsmanship and contribution to their respective game. The Patron of
The Jesters Club is HRH The Duke of Edinburgh.
We were not sure of the level of their team but after a couple of reports
from early matches on their tour we attempted to guess a little and
adjusted our team to try to make it as fair as possible. A strong showing
at the top of the order for the Jesters at 2/3/4 offset Lincoln Chan’s
performance at number one with a 3-0 win over his opponent Ross
who had fallen foul of the temptations of HK’s nightlife getting home at
6am. A solid performance mid order for HKFC and lower down with
the strength beginning to tell resulting in a win for HKFC 9-4 in the first
encounter. A special mention for the brother and sister duo Rupert and
Beatrice, two of HKFC’s younger players, who ensured their opponents
went home smiling despite being on the wrong end of 3-2 results.
After managing to secure almost enough seats in the Sportsman’s Bar,
no easy feat on Wimbledon Men’s and the World Cup Football finals day,
we settled down to several hours of entertaining banter with our visitors
with an exchange of gifts and brief speeches thrown in. All done by 1am,
we sent the Jesters home, or for the younger crowd, onto LKF so they
Message from the
Soccer Captain
Robbie Bacon,
Soccer Section
Captain
Hello everyone,
The close season was not without any
football as those keen-beans stayed up to
watch England’s “love train” take them to the
semi-finals of the World Cup and the French
stodgily capitalise on the fortunes of VAR
to emerge triumphant. Closer to home, the
HKFC Summer 6’s took place every Tuesday
in July, while a selection of Main and Masters
players trudged over to Singapore for a hugely
enjoyable tour and competitive Singapore 7’s
tournament.
This month we have articles from Seb
Page on the HKFC Summer 6’s and Ryan
Woollford’s account of the Section tour to
Singapore, while Nigel Merritt updates us
on the outstanding work that goes on with
the Crusaders.
Pre-season is a time for blood sweat and
tears, and Klopp-esque double sessions,
good luck!
Robbie
HKFC Summer 6s
The annual HKFC Summer 6s took place
back on the Main Pitch across the
month of July, and it was great to see the
tournament so well supported by the Section.
The Club was represented by Wanderers, Albion
Rangers, Lucky Mile, Dynamics and Sons,
Roaches (Rovers and Coaches) and FFSR. As
ever, a few external teams are invited to join this
competition, this year those teams were Bants
Raptors, Wanchai Wolves, the Spartan’s, ANT
FC and PAFC led by Ashley Dyer.
An entertaining initial group stage saw some
close encounters with teams trying to attack as
much as possible to secure the vital bonus point
that comes from scoring 4 or more goals in a
game. When the split between Cup and Plate
groups took place, the Club teams were placed
to do well in the tournament with Lucky Mile and
Albion Rangers topping their respective groups.
In the first cup group, a 4–1 win for Amro’s
FFSR against Albion Rangers followed by a 2-2
draw with Dynamics and Sons secured their
place in the final, while in the other group Lucky
Mile beat PAFC with a bonus point and then
survived a nervy draw with Wanderers to seal
their place in the final.
So, a FFSR vs Lucky Mile final it was – the two
teams having previously met in the initial group
stage with Lucky Mile scoring a last minute
winner to win 3-2. This game turned out to be a
very different contest though, with Lucky Mile’s
young side coming out winners by five goals
to nil.
Singapore Soccer 7’S 2018
In the last weekend of July, Singapore Cricket
Club hosted their annual Soccer tournament,
which has now been revised to a seven player
format from the usual sixes of previous years.
HKFC, a regular attendee of this event, were
represented by two men’s sides for 2018; one
team in the main competition and another in the
35+ masters section of the tournament.
The HKFC main team performed solidly in their
first three games and finished top of the group,
following draws against SCC NFL (1-1) and
Gaelic Lion (1-1), finishing with a well-deserved
win against Gymkhana (3-2), fighting back from
2-nil down at half time to take the result and see
them comfortably into the knock-out part of the
competition.
As the tournament, and the weather, really
started to heat up, it was the turn of the HKFC
Masters to take the field. They proved too
good for all that were put in front of them and
cruised to take the group with three wins out of
22 September 2018

SOCCER
three, beating SCC NFL Masters (2-0), Muddy
Welsh (10-0) and FYS & Friends (6-0). Notable
mentions go to Adrian Worth for a double hattrick
in the 10-0 win against Muddy Welsh and
also to Tony Hamilton-Bram for a hat-trick in
the same game.
As the second day of the competition
commenced, the HKFC main team started with
a close 1-0 win against Casuals FC to see them
into the semi-finals of the cup and continue
their unbeaten run. However, the run came to
an end in the very next game, losing 2-1 to
Yokohama CAC, a tough result to swallow but a
commendable performance for the HKFC main
team.
The HKFC Masters started the knock-out
stages against the hotly tipped home team,
SCC Masters, but again proved too strong and
took the game as comfortable 3-1 winners.
However, the masters were to then follow the
same fate as the main team, losing in the semifinals
against a strong Bangkok Airways team,
who were the eventual winners of the Masters
tournament.
Congratulations to all the players and teams
involved, a very solid showing for HKFC in the
2018 SCC Soccer Sevens and let’s hope for
some silverware next year!
Vandals Tour to Kazakhstan
After touring to Kathmandu in 2016 and
Goa in 2017 the Club Rugby Section’s
touring side, the Vandals, travelled to
Kazakhstan in May 2018 to continue their
support to the growth of rugby in Asia.
The Vandals tour to maintain the memory of
the Club players who didn’t return from Bali in
2002 and combine playing local teams with
supporting younger rugby players, and training
local school children at any level of sports ability.
Arriving in Almaty on a balmy early summer
afternoon the team headed for some
sightseeing above Almaty via the Koktobe
cable car. Dinner was at a traditional Kazakh
restaurant sampling the local delicacies which
included a varied range of horsemeat dishes
plus fermented mare’s milk.
The Vandals were in Almaty via an invitation from
Murat Uanbeyev, the President of Kazakhstan
Rugby. The tour coincided with Asia Rugby’s
Division III Central international tournament
involving Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Kyrgyzstan and
Pakistan with the Vandals set to play a curtain
raiser against a Kazakhstan XV.
Arriving at the ADK Stadium the team was
asked to play against a Mongolia XV as well as
the Kazakhstan XV. Two forty minutes matches
later the Vandals emerged, having played with
great heart and skill, with two close defeats 26
-19 to Mongolia and 26 -17 to Kazakhstan. Try
scorers were Simon Bourke, Ed Botha, Pat
Long, Max Young and Ian “Venus” Morrison.
A magnificent sideline conversion by Matt
Smith kept the Vandals in the hunt against
Mongolia who won with a try in the last play of
the game under the posts. The team enjoyed
the hospitality of the Kazakhstan Rugby Union
while watching the final international match
between Kazakhstan and Pakistan.
A very early start on Sunday morning was
enjoyed by most, and five hours by bus and
a 3 kilometre walk later the Vandals arrived at
the Charyn Canyon campsite, one of the most
scenic sites in Kazakhstan, and their version
of the Grand Canyon. Most players hiked to
the rim of the canyon for some fabulous views,
returning in time for dinner, the tour prize-giving,
which included the award of the Venus Cup to
Rob “BBB” Hartley and a good night’s sleep in
local yurtas.
Another early start for the return trip was
rewarded with a trip to the Almarasan
bathhouse in Almaty, and a tour of the city
followed by a training and coaching session
at the Alasha sports ground with 200 local
school children (thanks to Olga, Yerbol and
Anastassiya for organising), before heading to
the airport and a midnight flight back to Hong
Kong.
great support provided by Gulbarsha and her
team at Sadmol Travel.
Women’s Hockey Section E Team Tour to Vietnam –
Ho Ch”E” Minh Tour
For many this year the weekend of 19-20th May held thoughts of
all things British with Royal Wedding Fever. For the ladies of the
Hockey Section E team it marked the highlight of the season - the
Tour to Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam.
Organised using the “divide and conquer” methodology after an infamous
post training “rosé session” during which it was firmly agreed we would
be touring together, it took 2 weeks to go from hypotheses to fully
booked - a host venue, 13 flights secured, the biggest air b’n’b in HCM
booked and of course a fine restaurant lined up for the Saturday evening.
It then took many more weeks for the team member with the most
passports to her name to realise not one would let her in without a visa.
The only organisational blip was the inability of 13 individuals to read a
sizing chart and this resulted in tour dresses rather than tour shirts which
required quite some alteration!
In terms of securing a host it was an easy choice. Hockey in Vietnam was
established in 2007 and has grown steadily but faced many challenges
since James Chew introduced the sport. One of the many factors which
can help in cementing a sport is for their players to come into contact
with hockey players from other hockey playing communities around the
world. When we made contact through Club connections, they were
immediately delighted to host us at the Vietnam Hockey Centre for an
afternoon of hockey.
It was a relatively quiet first night enjoying the culinary delights of Ho
Chi Minh City and left us well set up for the matches the next day at
the Vietnam Hockey Centre. There was a minor hiccup when we were
introduced to some of their players as the “Hong Kong Hockey team”
rather than a “hockey team from Hong Kong” which left us somewhat
nervous about the opposition we were going to meet. The Hockey
Centre was about an hour’s ride on a bus from the central Penthouse
location and during the trip James told us about the journey of Hockey
in Vietnam since 2007. Since then it has grown steadily but not without
its challenges. Reliance on donation alone was not sustainable and
so efforts were also made to put into place a formal structure to grow
hockey with the setting up of the Vietnam Hockey Federation and getting
membership of the FIH.
The afternoon was fun and started with an 11 a side game. It was well
supported with members of the community both umpiring and acting as
ball patrol. The Club team enjoyed the game and at half time switched
their team’s structure such that the defenders became the attackers to
balance the sides a bit. The sides then mixed up to form 4 x 6-a-side
teams for a few short games where the language barrier was no barrier to
camaraderie and fun matches. After the games we presented them with
the HKFC Pendant and also with some kit which was kindly donated by
the Hockey Section. Seeing the impact on the individuals who received
the “prizes” keenly highlighted how Hockey is almost entirely reliant on
Sponsorship of hockey sticks and equipment from donors.
They gave each of our players a commemorative badge of Vietnam
Hockey and after a few celebratory drinks we stepped onto the bus for
the return journey just as the heaven’s opened - and more conveniently
just as Prince Harry arrived at the Windsor Great Chapel. The return
bus ride coincided perfectly with the Royal Wedding which saw half the
bus sharing headphones and screens (reminiscent of days on school
trips sharing headphones of good old trusty Walkmans - which says
something about the age of the team) and grateful to the BBC for actually
live streaming the wedding worldwide. The other half of the bus were
totally disinterested and enjoyed a phenomenal storm outside of the
windows!
After a slow ride back through the storm the team rapidly transformed
into a glamorous crew who enjoyed a phenomenal royal wedding themed
meal before heading onto sample Ho Chi Minh’s nightlife. Not even our
key Tour Organiser’s evening was dampened by all the teasing (and
complete lack of sympathy) after getting her foot squashed by a taxi
with a less than attentive driver who took his foot off the brake such that
the car slowly rolled forward onto her toes. We were mainly grateful for
the fact that it wasn’t her fingers that were injured as she was a ninja at
keeping our spending spreadsheet up to date!
As for hockey in Vietnam, today sees around 1000 active hockey players,
who are mainly university students, thanks to help from sponsors and a
social enterprise called Vietnam Hockey. They built the hockey centre to
establish a base to organise and grow hockey in Vietnam. Future plans
involve reaching out to the other two big cities where there is a large
student population, Danang and Hanoi, to develop hockey and conduct
courses for local hockey coaches who are instrumental in promoting
hockey. The aim is to focus firstly on university students and eventually
the schools. Getting Funding is always one of the main challenges and
getting human resource to help is also another. The biggest challenge in
retaining the growth of the sport will be economic, and it was humbling
to appreciate that no matter how much a sport is loved, for those living
below the poverty line playing 90% will give up the sport to earn a living.
The E team had a well-balanced weekend between hockey and good
food, spa time and relaxation amongst friends. May has been declared an
optimal touring month for the team and it won’t take many bottles of the
fizzy rosé at the Sportsman’s to see another tour organised next year.
HOCKEY
Summer Hockey Article
Summer hockey never fails in providing
plenty of goals, sweat, and socials –
and this season there has been no
exceptions. This high octane entertainment has
been out of the top draw this year, constantly
delivering to those dedicated on-lookers who
ventured down to watch on a school night.
Congratulations
The team, known as the KimChees after two
long terms members of the Section's playing
community, have always had the highest
expectations placed upon them. They have a
deadly combination of well experienced HKFC
members (and veterans) of the sport coupled
with the emerging youth and offspring of the
Section's members. This balance of having the
youngsters put in the miles on the field and the
more experienced saving themselves to witness
the rolling of the blinds in the Sportman's
makes for the true summer experience. It’s is a
wonderful hockey community, the perfect mix
‘n’ match and what makes this type of hockey
so much fun!
There were a number of maiden outings for the
Kimchees this season: Hudson Loh, Hamish
Leung, Lauren Loh, Kai Potter, Marthe Van
Wilsum and Alex McFarlane it was really great
to get you all involved, and should others look
to play next summer, please don’t hesitate to
reach out to Kim Roberts or Daniel Billig.
Kimchees have had (so far) a very impressive
run of form from the 18 games played, winning
13, drawing 2 and losing 3, it’s safe to say that
this is a social sport, however we always play
to win!
Wedding of Alice Cabrelli
Congratulations to Ladies’ B Team player
Alice Cabrelli and her husband Tom Bury,
who were married in Tuscany over the
summer. The Hockey Section wishes the
newlyweds love and happiness for many years
to come.
Men’s B Team
Ladies’ A+ Team
Over the summer season, the
Ladies’ A+ roster was struck with
departures, injuries and exams. Despite
losing a few matches purely to lack
of players the team pulled together
and we managed to finish in 9th place
out of 12 avoiding relegation. Even in
matches where we could only field 2 of
3 pairs for we still did our very best and
fought them out against tough relentless
opponents.
We were grateful to have Justine Tam
join us from Ladies’ A for the summer
season, and wish her all the best as she
heads off to university - we’ll miss her
on the courts. Also, Stephanie Torville
joined us after the netball season
wrapped up and contributed positively
to each and every game she played. We
wish Tanya Master all the best as she steps away for a short while in
expectation of a lovely baby arriving mid-September, and finally, we look
forward to having Yuliya Ustyuzhanina join us for the upcoming season.
What a season it has been for the Men’s B Team! We ended
bottom of the ladder (our lowest ever position since our
promotion from the C league). Yet, we avoided relegation and look
forward to a more successful winter season. It was an inauspicious
start to the season with the team enduring through a seven game
losing streak. We broke this in our final match of the season securing
our place in the league with a dominant 7-2 win.
A massive thank you to Duncan Spooner, who is leaving Hong
Kong. He has been our star player for nearly a decade. His
contribution to the team has been tremendous and we wish him
all the best in the UK. A special shout-out to Raja Kanthan, who
stepped in to the breach and ably assisted captain David Law
whose business commitments called him away from the courts for
much of the season. Finally, the team moves into the coming season
with new captain Myles Ormerod with David Law staying on as
vice-captain.
Summer Cup – KSC East
Saturday 14th July
Tom McColl with his trophy
2018 Ladies Club Champion Lily Chan
Another successful event in KSC East with
sixteen players registered to compete
for the Summer Cup. Despite terrible
weather, we had a few new members joining the
event, namey Alan Yue , Vivian Poon and Hoi
Leung. Lets give them a warm welcome and
we do hope to see more of them in future GS
events.
As usual, we left at 7.30am and arrived at KSC
at around 9.40am. The rain was falling gently
as we teed off and there was already a strong
wind blowing. The first to tee off were Terry
Wright, Dallas Reid and Tom McColl. With
a long drive and precision iron play, Tom won
the longest drive at hole 17 and claimed first
place in the Summer Cup with 33 stableford
points. Terry loved it when the wind came up
Saturday afternoon. He knows KSC East course
reputation for chewing up players in the wind
and rain especially with the difficult holes such
as 8, 9 and 10. At hole 10, he had to hit a 5 iron,
with only 140 yards to the flag. In such terrible
condition, he still shot an 82 with 32 stableford
points to claim second place. Dallas had another
good round to claim the best gross in the
Summer Cup.
The second group to tee off were Jonathan Li,
Jonny Lam and Alan Yue. Jonathan is a very
experienced golfer and he was able to handle
the golf course relatively easily. With two nearest
the pins at hole 5 and 8, he shot 92 with 30
stableford points to win the third place. Alan also
played a wonderful round with 1 nearest the pin
at hole 15. He told me this is his first time to win
a prize at a golf event!
The third and fourth group were the ladies group.
Some of them couldn’t finish some of the holes
due to the heavy rain so their results couldn’t be
counted. However, Lily and Lana played their
par 3s exceptionally well to win the nearest the
pin at hole 3, hole 12 and hole 13.
To sum up, here is the detailed results
1st place: Tom McColl–33 stableford points
2nd place: Terry Wright–32 stableford points
3rd place: Jonathan Li–30 stableford points
Bess Gross: Dallas Reid (88)
Nearest the pin
Hole 3: Lana Woo
Hole 5: Jonathan Li
Hole 8: Jonathan Li
Hole 13: Lily Chan
Hole 15: Alan Yue
Nearest the Pin in 2 shots: Lana Woo
Men’s Longest Drive: Tom McColl
Ladies Longest Drive: Peggy Chan
That’s it for the Summer Cup and we look
forward seeing you at the next event.
Happy Golfing
BIG Report
Although the Inter-Club bowling season has
come to a halt over the summer holidays,
competitive bowling never stops within
BIG. On the 21st July, BIG held it’s very own
Summer Tournament where a total of eleven
players competed under a three game total Gordon Chow
to take down captain Marian Au. Emy ended up bowling
a 472 series, whilst Marian took home the victory with a
magnificent 501 series. A big thank you to all the players who
participated and congratulations to the winners!
all three, placing 2nd in the 200
Tony Mitchell competed in the
400 Free and set a personal best.
