UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has announced that it’s going to be mandatory to install
electric vehicle charging stations in the construction of all residential, business, and other
commercial buildings in the country after 2022.
As a result of the decisions taken at the United Nations (UN) Climate Change Conference
(COP26), which ended on October 12, 2021, the London government took a series of
decisions to limit the use of fossil fuel vehicles and accelerate the transition to sustainable
energy sources.
Accordingly, it is aimed to establish 145 thousand new electric vehicle charging stations
every year within the framework of the legislation issued after climate change in the UK.
Johnson gave the signals of this new regulation adopted at the COP26 Summit. In his
speech at the summit, Johnson addressed businesspeople in UK and said that electric
charging stations should be installed in buildings such as new homes, supermarkets and
workplaces.
By 2030, the production of vehicles which uses fossil fuels such as diesel, gasoline and
LPG will cease in the UK. It is noted that the new legislation on electric charging stations
is an important step in achieving this target and achieving "0 emissions" by 2050.
Johnson stated that currently the sales of electric vehicles in the UK have increased by
70 percent annually, saying: "We have taken a very important step. We cannot continue
as we are now. We have to adapt our economy to the green industrial revolution. We
want to stop the production of vehicles that emit carbon dioxide by 2030, much earlier
than other European countries."
