Welcome
Week 2020
Tembusu Welcome Week
holds a very special place
in the hearts of many. It has
kindled countless friendships
and created many precious memories.
The culture fostered is one which allows
us to bond and learn from each other
as fellow Tembusians. Through the
dedication and boundless creativity
of the seniors, this legacy was carried
forward in Tembusu Welcome Week
2020.
Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet,

Every year brings new ideas, new horizons, and most importantly - new beginnings.
It was a sign of our community’s indomitable spirit, and lit a spark which showed
every single person in our College that it is indeed the Home of Possibilities.

Arts Week: Realm of Our Own
Arts Week: Realm of our Own, was our twist on
the pandemic situation. With everyone socially
distanced and apart from each other, we felt that
we as Tembusians were slowly becoming trapped
in our own bubbles. But we wanted to embrace
Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet,

that, with the idea of these bubbles becoming
our Realms in which we could still explore and
experience the many different exciting forms of
art in Tembusu. As the saying goes, the show must
go on, and this is something we hoped we have
achieved, by hosting interesting workshops and
bringing guests such as Pooja Nansi and Dick Lee
over, and of course ending it off with the first ever
live-streamed finale night in Tembusu history!l

Tembu Takes a Break (TTAB) was a week-long
welfare event that occurs twice during each

WOOHOO
Romance was in the air in Tembusu!
And with romance comes romantic music and lovely poetry~
WOOHOO: Valentine’s Special gave a lovely live stream performance with a
background filled with fluffy pink clouds and little floating cupids to go along with
it. To add on, the Arts Council also did poem dedications dedicated and performed
to your secret admirer. Or a special “friend”. We don’t judge.
TEMBUSU VALENTINE’S
Tembusu Valentine’s was a collaboration between the Communications
Subcommittee and Welfare Subcommittee. In the spirit of love, the two
subcommittees came together to design postcards that Tembusians could order
and dedicate to their friends or significant others. Our ambitious selves came up
with eight variations to cater to both romantic and platonic relationships, alongside
the option to have a short poem printed on the message side of our postcards. Our
personal favourite element of this initiative would be the option for these cards to
be hand delivered to their intended recipients. It was very heart-warming to see
everyone ordering and receiving these cards, cheers to spreading the love!

we bounced back stronger with a

initially conceived as
a top tier April Fools
Prank - On April 1st, we
wanted to announce the
construction of Learn
Lobe 2 (this part was of
course fake) at the green
space between Tembusu
and Cinnamon, right
outside MCL. As part of
celebrations, we would
be giving away free
churros and nachos (this
part was very much real).
Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet,
consectetuer
While the office did not end up approving
the former part of our plan, we still ended
up having the giveaway - which everyone
thought was fake during the first hour…

All Hearts On Deck

245 3005 2021
All Hearts on Deck (AHOD) was founded in AY20/21 with the aim to inspire Tembusians to contribute
actively to the betterment of the Tembusu community. To begin, the project focus in AY20/21 revolved
around the following:
1. Appreciating our Cleaners: A project to encourage the Tembusu student body to show their appreciation
for our cleaners.
2. Our Tembu Community Leaders: A project to showcase Tembusu student leaders and inspire more
students to take on leadership positions.
3. Volunteering Experiences: To expose students to volunteering work.
While it was a daunting task to plan and execute the events due to the COVID-19 restrictions, through
the support of the fellows and students, we managed to execute most of the projects nonetheless.
Moving forward, I am pleased to share that this SLI has been succeeded by 7 executive members.

“What’s happening in Myanmar?” Awareness Campaign
On 1st February 2021, a coup d'état occurred in Myanmar. This forced the Southeast Asian country
into a state of emergency, with more than 700 dead in violent crackdowns nationwide in the first
three months. Some Tembusians took the initiative to do something about it, and convey the coup’s
national, regional and global significance to the community here in Singapore.
What started as small, sporadic awareness and fundraising initiatives by individuals soon developed
into a concerted effort to spread awareness and raise funds due to the overlapping affiliations of
many of these individuals, such as tEnpower (Tembusu’s Burmese Out of classroom clasroom teaching). teaching. For
instance, an easy-to-read infographic providing a quick outline of the situation, and the ways one
can contribute was carefully collaboratively crafted to support the Burmese people in reclaiming
their hard-earned democracy. Hence, despite the practical difficulty in conducting formal fundraisers
and awareness campaigns, we hope to have gotten the message across – that every small bit counts.

Supper bot

245 3005 2021
“I personally believe that technology is a great tool for making our lives easier and more enjoyable.
I practise this by implementing apps when it makes sense to. When I entered Tembusu
College, Shan would often order supper using the original supperBot created by a Senior.
At the end of my first year, as I was looking for a summer project, I identified ways in which the
original supperBot could be improved. Alas, this was how supperBotV2 started out. I teamed up
with James (Tancho) to work on this and we were very fortunate that the original creator spent
time to guide, discuss with and advise us.
We added many improvements to the user interface, such as replacing the spammy "/additem"
command with buttons, and allowing for a custom jio message and order remarks.
While I am proud of the features we completed, there are still many potential improvements to
supperBot which could perhaps be explored in version 3. As part of my 3rd year Senior Project at
the college, I hope to mentor a group of Tembusians in developing software that would benefit
residents at Tembusu College. This could include an upgrade to the current version of the supper-
Bot.”

marginalIties
For those who want to contribute to the community, MarginaliTies is a student-led out of classroom
initiative that aims to raise awareness about different forms of marginalised groups in Singapore and
in the region. With a special focus on refugees, as well as migrant workers and underprivileged
communities in Singapore, you are invited to contribute, even in a small way, to help these individuals
overcome their difficulties.
Over the last two years, MarginaliTies has organised talks, reading groups and learning journeys to
engage and educate Tembusians about the different marginalised groups. We also organise volunteer
programmes and activities in collaboration with local and international organisations from the
humanitarian sector for those interested.

At Urban Farmers, we manage the Misty Garden beside the MCL!
Farmers tend to the beautiful flora and fauna - from watering and
pruning the mulberry tree and fern wall, to feeding the elegant fishes
in our pond. Our interactive visit to the Green Circle Eco Farm allowed
us to gain a deeper understanding of gardening in Singapore. We
also hosted a Kokedama (moss ball) workshop, which gave many
beginners the opportunity to learn to care for their own plants.
Thank you Dr Margaret for your guidance, and all hardworking
farmers who collectively help to keep the garden vibrant and lovely.

Founded in 2019, the Ocean Fest team is rooted in a group of Tembusians passionate about marine
conservation issues. With a focus on the local environment, we explored the overlooked vibrant
marine ecosystems and biodiversity on our local Singapore shores. For a long time, many of the
pollutants in our oceans have wreaked havoc on our marine ecosystems, even as Singapore and the
world came to a standstill. With COVID-19, our plans for a physical fest dwindled but our passion for
the ocean did not waver. Hence, we pushed for a digital Ocean Fest to prompt waves of awareness
and change within our community.

The Alumni Working Group (AWG) is a team of dedicated Tembusians who work closely with the College,
Tembusu Alumni and current Tembusu residents. Founded on the vision that every Tembusian feels at
home beyond their residence in this “Home of Possibilities”, AWG hopes to establish avenues where
Alumni can remain connected to the College and its community.
Many initiatives were implemented in effort to stay in touch with our Alumni. These included more regular
updates on our Alumni Telegram Channel(https://t.me/tembusualumni) about events in the College, our
inaugural Alumni Newsletter and refreshing our Alumni Database. Special projects were also pioneered
this year, with the introduction of the pilot Tembusu AWG Mentorship Programme where current
residents were paired with our alumni mentors, Student Teas with our Alumni, and a graduation pack for
our graduating cohort of Year 2 residents. With a slew of initiatives being implemented, we hope to pave
the way for a stronger engagement with our dear Alumni.

Thriftbusu is an interest group that seeks to pay homage to the environment,
through fashion. In our highly globalised and interconnected world today,
fashion trends dominate our social fabric. This paves the way for the
culmination of the fast fashion industry. Our consumption patterns to date
have generated an abundance of textile waste and environmental pollution,
therefore inundating our already dire climate.
Thriftbusu seeks to confront environmentally unsustainable consumption
patterns through… thrifting! Through our semesterly iteration of our thrift
store where donated, second-hand clothes of Tembusians are sold off to other
fellow Tembusians at discounted prices, we seek to raise awareness about the
dangers of fast fashion as well as to create our very own circular economy
right here in Tembusu. Envisioning the cultivation of a much more
environmentally sustainable lifestyle among Tembusians, we hope that

in taking social issues to the forefront of Tembusians' lives.
While COVID has gotten in the way of our usual activities, our
goal remains the same. Late nights, interviewing, transcribing,
writing, editing, recording... yeah this is a mod with extra
steps!

A band of misfits only passionate about making films on juicy
Tembusu 'tea' and writing emo, heartbreaking scripts,
Reel-T's an IG not to be taken seriously. Don't ever expect a
2-hour weekly session of cReAtiVe wRitiNg or workshops that
discuss Tarantino films cause deep down, we're an IG that's
all about adding a little colour, humour and joy through
filmmaking. In using the daily adventures of what the
average (and not-so-average) Tembusian encounters, we tap
on the community's interest in acting, scriptwriting and
videography to create stories that celebrate our humanity all
found within these 21 floors.
TLDR: we write scripts. we direct those scripts. we go fishing

tCrews is Tembusu’s resident dance interest group.
It adds value to the College by being a platform for
students to express themselves through dance. It
also introduces the art form to students with no
prior experience in dance, providing a safe space
for them to learn and grow. As tCrews does not
focus on a single genre of dance, it aims to expose
participants to multiple genres to fully understand
the versatility of the art form, allowing participants
to explore their interests and find their niche.

Tembolly is a dance platform for anyone looking to
distress and express themselves. We delve into the
different forms of dance while blending in the
Bollywood essence in our choreography, all for a
fun and enjoyable experience! We also engage in
activities like movie and trivia nights to foster a
close-knit relationship with one another.

The Tembusu Treblemakers is a home for all
Tembusians passionate about singing. In the
past year, we've had to put the safety of all
Tembusians first and pause in-person activities
as an IG in light of the COVID-19 outbreak and
restrictions. In Sem 1, we hosted a singing
workshop in conjunction with Arts Week to
introduce Tembusians to different singing
styles and techniques that can be applied to
sound more like their favourite artists. We
believe the passion for acapella burns bright in
the College and hope that Treblemakers will
have the opportunity to make a comeback soon!

about gaja house
Gaja, the proud house of stability that’s located smack dab in the middle of
Tembusu College (in terms of height). We are a house known for its chill culture!
We try to be as open, welcoming and inviting to others as possible to join our
events but without pressure!
Our house managed to bond through the weekly events and regular jios that
we open to everyone! One such event would be Gaja Wednesday where every
Wednesday, everyone is invited to eat dinner together in the common lounge
so they can talk, play pool and just hang out with each other!
Recently, our house culture has started to develop more and become more
vibrant due to the active members of our house! Since the members of the
house have the greatest influence as to what the house culture will be like, I
appreciate those who are active and participate in the house events the most as
they contribute to the evolution of the house culture.

about ponya house
x
If I had to describe Ponya in one word, it would definitely be “easy-going”. The
seniors are all really warm, friendly, and are very open to sharing advice if you
ever need help. Our house committee also played a huge role in engaging all
the Ponyans in spite of all the COVID-19 restrictions. Throughout the semester,
we were able to organise several house bonding activities ranging from house
welfare to group games. Personally, the most memorable event was 'Ponya
Under the Stars', where we simulated a “picnic in the dark” environment for
groups of 5 that could sit together to unwind after working hard all day, and just
enjoy the music and food provided. Activities like these allowed Ponyans to take
time to catch-up with each other. It was moments like these, where we could
take a break from the stress of academics to relax with our friends that I appreciated
most about Ponya House. The House above all .
