PHILOSOPHY OF EDUCATION
I believe that all people should have the opportunity to attain the highest level of education that
they desire and of which they are capable. Every person who is admitted to a university should
be capable of college level mathematics. It is my duty, as a mathematics faculty member to
present the level of mathematics necessary for the course I am teaching in a way that is
accessible to the students and appropriate for the course. It is the students' duty to work outside

class to comprehend and master the topics discussed in the course. Undergraduate mathematics
is in two levels: computational and theoretic. Both of these levels are best learned by doing
exercises. Hence, I make myself available to the students to assist them in their mastery outside
class times.
CONFERENCES AND PRESENTATIONS
Texas Section of the Mathematical Association of America, annual meeting, Spring, attended
each since 1998. At the 1998 and 1999 meetings, I was a Texas NExT
Fellow. At the 2003 meeting, a student presented a paper that I supervised.
Eighth Annual International Conference on Game Theory, SUNY- Stony Brook, Stony Brook,
New York, July, 1998.
Presented "A generalization of the potential function of the Shapley value for
games in partition function form"
Abstract: The potential function of the Shapley value for games in characteristic function form
was defined by Hart and Mas-Colell (1988) and can be used as a method for
computing the Shapley value for those games. Since games in partition function
form were first introduced by Thrall and Lucas (1963), several generalizations of
the Shapley value have been introduced various authors. One such generalization
is an average value introduced by Potter(1997). This unique Shapley-type value
admits a generalization of the Hart/Mas-Colell potential function. The purpose of
this paper is to define this potential function.

Sixteenth Triennial International Symposium on Mathematical Programming, EPFL,
Lausanne, Switzerland, August, 1997.
Presented "A new value for games in partition function form"
Abstract: Games in partition function form were introduced by Thrall and Lucas
(1963). Values for such games were introduced by Myerson (1979), Bolger
(1989) and Feldman (1994); all of them are in some way extensions of the
Shapley value for cooperative transferrable utility games in characteristic form.
This paper introduces a new Shapley-type value for partition function games. A
formula for the new value is obtained and its uniqueness is proven. Also, the
regular concept of the dummy (or null) player for games in partition function
form was modified and renamed as dummy in the mean to fit into the new
framework.
Assistant Professor of Physics, Department of Chemistry and
Physics, Hardin-Simmons University, Abilene, Texas.
Teach undergraduate physics courses and corresponding laboratories,
including algebra- and calculus-based introductory physics, integrated science
(chemistry, physics and astronomy) for pre-service K-4 teachers, and acoustics.
Responsible for advising physics majors and developing new curricula to meet
physics requirements of other schools and departments.
Developed “Introduction to Acoustics;” a course to provide music and
speech/language pathology majors with a core science class directly related to
their field; it is now a required course for speech/language pathology.
Post-Doctoral Fellow, Scanning-Tunneling Microscopy Laboratory,
University of North Texas, Denton, Texas.
Conducted research into oriented carbon nanotube (CNT) growth using
thermal chemical vapor deposition and their resulting properties using scanning
electron and scanning tunneling microscopy. The growth procedure requires
coating a substrate with a thin (~150 nm) metallic film, which serves as a
catalyst for the CNT growth. The sample is pre-treated with either hydrogen or
ammonia gas as the temperature is increased to approximately 700º C. A
hydrocarbon, e.g., acetylene, is introduced and dehydrogenated, providing the
required agents for carbon nanotube growth.
Research Assistant, University of North Texas, Denton,
Texas.
Studied the kinetics of planar plasma sheaths, extending the theory to include
current-carrying sheaths. Beginning with a qualitative electric potential profile
within the sheath (the transition region between a plasma and a plasma-facing
solid), the distribution functions for plasma ions, plasma electrons and
secondary electrons are determined by kinematic requirements. Applying
boundary conditions to the total charge density and flux, e.g., quasi-neutrality of

the presheath, a system of nonlinear equations is obtained that describes the
electric potential within the sheath. The kinetic properties of the constituent
particles are thus determined.
Developed an approach to approximate the space-charge limited current of
relativistic electron beams in finite-length coaxial drift tubes. Defined as the
maximum steady-state current that can be transmitted through a certain
volume, the limiting current is difficult to determine for a general geometry due
to the inherent non-linearity of Poisson’s equation. Applying Green’s second
theorem to the space-charge limited Poisson equation over the beam’s volume,
a Sturm-Liouville eigenvalue equation can be introduced such that its boundary
conditions ensure Green’s identity. The limiting current is then approximated in
terms of the eigenvalue.
Along with the above research, a two-dimensional particle in cell (PIC) code
was developed to provide numerical comparison with the sheath and limiting
current theories. It was also used to investigate the ability of virtual cathodes to
simulate nested-well plasma traps. Other research interests included quantum
phase space propagators, transmission properties of one-dimensional quantum
structures and the electromagnetic characteristics of helical conductors.
Researcher/Programmer, Air Force Research Laboratory,
Kirtland Air Force Base, Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Modified and tested the Air Force’s 2-½ dimensional radiative magnetohydrodynamic
code, MACH2, and used it to model several devices of interest to
the scientific community: explosively formed fuses and magnetized target
fusion.
An explosively formed fuse is a fast opening switch capable of transferring
mega-joules of electrical energy within a few microseconds. The switch was
simulated by allowing an electrical current to flow through a thin foil,
surrounding a high-explosive. Detonating the explosive causes the foil to
lengthen and thin, thereby increasing its resistance. Using a preliminary current
of 1 kilo-ampere, details necessary for thoroughly modeling the device were
determined.
Magnetized target fusion is an approach to fusion ignition that is intermediate
to inertially-confined and magnetically-confined fusion schemes. Although a
magnetic field is used to inhibit thermal conduction from the plasma to the
confining liner, plasma-wall mixing still poses a problem. When this mixing
occurs, increased impurities in the plasma reduce the plasma temperature and
prevent the plasma from reaching ignition conditions. This mixing, due to the
Rayleigh-Taylor instability, was investigated by considering an imploding
cylindrical liner.
Teaching Assistant, University of North Texas, Denton,
Texas.
Taught the closed lab for calculus-based physics. Instructed students in the
open physics lab for all levels of introductory physics courses. Facilitated the
senior-level experimental physics lab and instructed the musical acoustics lab
for music majors.
