AmeriCorps

Pledge

I will get things done for America to make our people

safer, smarter, and healthier.

I will bring Americans together to strengthen our

communities.

Faced with apathy, I will take action.

Faced with conflict, I will seek common ground.

Faced with adversity, I will persevere.

I will carry this commitment with me this year and

beyond.

I am an AmeriCorps member, and I will get things done.

Dear AmeriCorps NCCC and FEMA Corps Members:

It is with great pleasure that I congratulate you on successfully completing your

AmeriCorps NCCC term of service. You have made a significant difference for

individuals, communities, and in your own life.

You and your fellow members served with dedication and selflessness. When our

nation faced unprecedented challenges, you rose to the occasion, delivering help

and hope in times of great need. When nature showed its worst, you showed

America’s best – putting compassion into action. When communities imagined a

better life for themselves, you answered the call and helped make their dreams a

reality. Your service lifted spirits, restored hope, and rekindled community where it

was needed most.

Your AmeriCorps service year has exemplified the best of AmeriCorps NCCC and

FEMA Corps. You are now part of a venerable legacy of tens of thousands of

Americans who have served their country in one of the most rigorous national service

programs. You should be proud of this tremendous accomplishment, as am I.

I hope this year has strengthened your commitment to ongoing service and civic

participation. Our nation needs it, and our nation needs you. I encourage you to stay

connected with the NCCC network and join with AmeriCorps Alums at

serviceyear.org/americorpsalums.

Congratulations on a job well done, thank you for choosing NCCC, and best wishes

for future success!

Most sincerely,

Ken Goodson

Dear AmeriCorps Member,

Congratulations on completing your AmeriCorps term of service in the NCCC or

NCCC FEMA Corps program. As an AmeriCorps member, you have made a

significant difference in the lives of your fellow Americans, as have each of the more

than 36,000 members who have served in NCCC.

Whether you engaged children in afterschool programs, provided support for FEMA

projects, or built trails in our national parks, your selfless actions improved lives,

strengthened communities, and demonstrated that service is a solution to some of

our nation's most pressing challenges. You have our special thanks for providing

critical support to survivors of natural disasters at their time of greatest need. And you

accomplished all of this in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In the years to come, I hope you will continue to answer the call of service. As an

AmeriCorps alumnus, you have the skills, knowledge, and experience to be a leader

in your community. Whether you volunteer a few hours a week, work in a nonprofit, or

start your own organization focused on social change, we need your continued

commitment to bring out the best of our nation. Your firsthand experience also

makes you our best advocates for the critical impact of national service on our

democracy, the power national service holds to bridge divides, and the need to

eradicate barriers to service.

AmeriCorps alumni are bound together by a common service experience and a

desire to be active members in their communities. As an AmeriCorps alumnus, we

want you to stay connected to the service community and your AmeriCorps peers.

Join the AmeriCorps Alums network, an official organization for AmeriCorps alumni

created by alumni for alumni, at serviceyear.org/americorpsalums.

All of us at AmeriCorps thank you for your service and send our best wishes for your

future success.

Sincerely,

Michael D. Smith

May 19, 2022

Dear Class 27B Graduates,

Congratulations! Together you prospered through an arduous year, providing demanding and

increasingly important service to this nation. The COVID-19 pandemic continued to push

America to its limits for a second year, Hurricane Ida affected thousands of lives in Louisiana

and the Northeast, and unprecedented wildfires raged. Across the country you showed that

Americans were still willing to show up and get things done.

The year began as most do, with a late-August hurricane upending Round 1 projects, and you

answered the call. Perhaps the greatest compliment of your inspiring service was the continued

call for teams to provide hurricane relief in Louisiana through Round 4. Again you answered the

call. Forest Service teams deployed to California and seven other states to fight wildfires during

another brutally dry year.

Class 27B will also be remembered for the class that led NCCC into a new area of service:

helping distressed hospitals through COVID surges and headline-grabbing staff shortages.

While your daily acts of kindness at six Kentucky hospitals may have seemed small, they kept

life bearable for thousands of patients and hundreds of staff.

This year, you have been the visible definition of flexibility and dedication, from the dozens of

homes you built to the 160 miles of trails you improved. In so many ways, you helped

Americans get back on their feet and begin the long process of recovery. You got things done

for America under circumstances that most of your fellow NCCC alumni could not imagine.

Know that the stage has been readied, and the bar has been set for all the classes that come

after you.

Thank you for your service and continue to Be GREAT.

Sincerely,

The Southern Region Leadership Team

Class 27B, thank you for your hard-work, dedication, and

service. Because of you, communities across the nation

are improved and lives are changed. Thank you for taking

up the mission to give back to your country with

AmeriCorps NCCC. Good luck with your next step in life

and know that you'll forever have a community within

AmeriCorps.

Thank you Team Leaders for your patience and

leadership. You had a tremendous undertaking this year,

and constatly served as role models for your members.

Your job this year was not easy, but you have each

successfully completed your year as leaders.

Congratulations and thank you for making the

experience for your team's memorable.

Thank you to the Southern Region Staff who go above

and beyond each day in supporting the Corps. We have all

relied so heavily on you, thank you for always being there

to answer our silly questions and late night calls.

Portia and Jonathan, thank you both so much for being

such supportive supervisors. You both displayed such

dedication to AmeriCorps and were an inspiration to

work with. Thank you for allowing me the autonomy to

complete my responsibilities.

Delta 5, thank you for being so welcoming,

understanding, and supportive. Without your hard work,

there's no way I would have been able to complete all of

my responsibilities. You each have impacted me in such a

great way. I will always cherish our memories and

friendship.

The yearbook would not be possible without the

contributions of the 27B Community Relations

Representatives who submitted their team photos

weekly and team yearbook pages each round. The CRRs

did an amazing job this year, I'm so proud of what you

each have accomplished. I am very thankful to have

worked with you all, the best part of my job was getting

to know each of you.

ROUND

II: BAYOU 2 BITES THE BIG

APPLE

Around the Globe! The team arrived in New York City

on Halloween. The moon was high and a fog was rolling

across the Queensborough Bridge as the two vans came

to a screeching halt in front of a local hub of

mischievous happenings: Extended Stay America.

Armed with respirators, hazmat suits, and naught but

their wits, their fate was uncertain.

Pizza Time! Life in the cold, mean streets of

northside Queens was only uplifted by the

sweet, savory, salty flavor of your friendly

neighborhood pizza joint. Slices were large, thin,

and frequently inhaled by the team.

When Faced with Adversity.... Corps Member Nickolas

Bellegante was no quitter, and even when faced with

impossible odds, he persevered. He was promoted to Team

Leader at the end of round 2, and Bayou 2 went on to live in

pride of their favorite gentle giant.

ROUND

III: BAYOU 2 GONE FISHIN'

Country Livin' Shannon Porter and Lando Burks

found their country roots on the shores of

Dauphin Island, Alabama. Here, the team was

put to the test against provided meals, beach

walks, and complimentary sponsor barbecues.

Arts and Crafts! Lee Ximines showing off their fingerpaint

work to the camera on a soon to be painted wall.

Finding joy in the day is an activity any corps member

is familiar with, and Ximines prevails.

AmeriCruise "Serving with AmeriCorps, Rose, was the

best thing that ever happened to me... it brought me to

you. And I'm thankful for that, Rose. I'm thankful."

Bayou 2 Round IV

Kings Mountain State Park

Owensboro Health Regional

Hospital

In the first part of their round, Bayou 2

traveled to Kings Mountain State Park to

enhance a park that the Civilian

Conservation Corps helped to establish.

The team had a great time chopping down

trees and making the park more beautiful.

In their time off team members had a great

time attending yoga at the local YMCA,

hiking, kayaking, and enjoying time in

nature. The team was able to see some of

the iconic stone work that the CCC

constructed originally for the park and had

a great time exploring the area.

Gathered in a haste by their fearless team

leader after a hard day at work, the

members of Bayou 2 were informed that

they were being pulled for disaster. The

team packed up very early on a Saturday

morning and drove the 9 hours from South

Carolina to Owensboro Kentucky to work

at Owensboro Health Regional Hospital.

After being pulled for disaster, the team

found themselves thrown into a new

project of the kind they have never

experienced before. Working at OHRH was

new for the team. They were split up and

worked independently in different

departments. From the emergency room,

to the operating room; from pushing

patients to x-ray, to restocking different

departments with materials and linens;

from sterilizing instruments to

landscaping, everyone found a department

that they were compatible with.

Round one

Bayou 3 spent the majority of their first round

in Rhode Island working with Southside

Community Land Trust, an organization that

focuses on providing new American and other

marginalized farmers resources to grow

nutritious, culturally relevant foods, as well as

working to remedy food inequality in the area.

Throughout the term of service, the team

renovated four greenhouses, cleared over

5,000 lbs of weeds and brush, moved over

2,000 lbs of rock and stone, built nine fences,

and built two retaining walls to support a new

pathway. In Rhode Island, members worked

with BillionGraves, cataloguing gravestones to

support a growing database for families of the

deceased, and Rescuing Leftover Cuisine,

picking up food donations from businesses and

delivering them to shelters around Providence.

The team loved getting to know the

Providence area, and enjoyed hiking,

camping, going to the beach, exploring the

city, and eating tons of ice cream.

Bayou 3 was deployed to Port Murray,

New Jersey for the last two weeks of the

round, where they responded to damage

caused by Hurricane Ida. Each day, they

mucked and gutted houses for

homeowners who were impacted by

flooding from the hurricane, clearing out

debris, drywall, and flooring to stop the

spread of black mold. It was hard work,

but the team enjoyed meeting those they

helped as well as working with other

AmeriCorps teams from other regions and

programs.

Bayou 3 spent the first half of the second

round in Danielsville, Georgia working for

the Boys and Girls Club of Metro Atlanta at

Camp Kiwanis. There, the team worked on

general maintenance around the camp

such as: painting the boys and girl?s camp

bathrooms, sealing the cabin?s porches,

and building fences around the camp.

However, the main project that the team

worked on was taking down the old Fort

James and rebuilding the new Fort James.

So the team really got to experience the

construction process from the very

beginning; they worked on chiseling,

hammering, pouring concrete, and

measuring to get everything to line up just

perfect. The new Fort James has two

stories and is nearly double the size of the

old Fort James.

In the second half of the round the team

made their way to Houma-Thibodaux,

Louisiana, to work with Catholic

Charities on disaster relief for Hurricane

Ida. The main focus for the team to work

on was mucking and gutting houses that

were salvageable and had been affected

by the storm. The work was hard, but

the team had a lot of fun along the way.

The team got to experience true

southern hospitality and experienced

many new things such as: crab fishing,

exploring New Orleans, and eating

wonderful Cajun food such as a crab

boil.

For this round Bayou 3 made their way to

the Baptist Hospital in Louisville,

Kentucky. There, they worked with the

Food and Nutrition services, where the

team was separated into different jobs

and some worked at different times.

Ethan, Will, Chloe, and Kelly worked in

patient services, taking food directly to

the patients and giving them their menus.

Gabe worked in Sanitation where he

served food and cleaned and sanitized

the food carts. Michael worked in stock

where he gathered up and stocked the

food shelves to make sure the hospital

never ran out of supplies. Work in the

Hospital was hard but also very fulfilling

because the work was very important,

due to how short staffed the food and

nutrition services were.

Tristan Oyen. At camp, the crew

worked on a variety of projects such

as: burning piles of bamboo, trail

building, cleaning the retreat center,

and building bridges. The team got to

take part in the camp experience by

climbing a rock wall and canoeing.

The best part was being able to be in

campus but commuted to Jackson

everyday for work. With Keep Jackson

Beautiful Bayou Three worked with a

variety of nonprofits around the

community such as Stew Pot, The Good

Samaritan, various community gardens,

and two of the cemeteries. With these

nonprofits they completed a wide variety

of tasks to help beautify the Jackson area.

They also had the opportunity to meet

with some of the city officials including

the mayor of Jackson. Overall it was a

good final project that the team will be

able to leave with a wide variety of new

skills to take with them into the future.

Project 1

Global Game Changers

Louisville, Kentucky

For their first project of the year, Bayou 4 landed in Louisville, Kentucky working

with Global Game Changers. They worked to prep for the nonprofit’s after school

program and 9/11 event. Many capes were folded, stickers cut, beads counted, and

stars tied. The team worked at one school helping with outdoor maintenance,

lunchtime and the start of the after school program. Later, the team went into many

local elementary schools to teach the 9/11 Lesson. This included videos, crafts, and a

stair climb. Their hard work culminated with the 9/11 event, to honor the real life

superheroes of 9/11.

While working with GGC, Bayou 4 was able to experience many of the great things

Louisville has to offer. They visited many ice cream and coffee shops, trying to

decide which ones were best. At a nearby park, the team was able to hear live music

with TWO banjos! Truly a once in a lifetime experience.

Project 2

Baptist Health Hardin

Elizabethtown, Kentucky

Originally, Bayou 4 was supposed to go to Douthat State Park in Virginia for their

second project. Plans changed and the team was diverted to Elizabethtown, KY.

There, they worked at Baptist Health Hardin, a hospital struggling in their fight

against COVID-19. Corps members worked in a variety of non-medical jobs to help

relieve the hospital staff. Some members worked in the environmental services,

biomedical engineering, and food services departments. Others stocked oxygen

tanks and isolation caddies.

On off days, team members participated in a variety of activities. One of these was

axe throwing (pictured below), a new and fun experience for everyone! Some

members also went to Mammoth Caves for an ISP. They trailbuilt and then went on

an intense cave tour that included crawling through mud and bouldering.

Round 2:

Habitat for Humanity

New Orleans, LA

For Round 2, the team was sent down south!

Bayou 4 worked with New Orleans Area Habitat

for Humanity on a wide variety of projects. Most

days were on a construction site, learning and

building. At the beginning of the round, Bayou 4

also did some disaster relief projects. Hurricane

Ida hit Louisiana earlier in the year, and parts of

the state were still recovering. The team mucked

and gutted houses in the Lafitte/Barataria areas.

Throughout the project, Bayou 4 worked hard to

get things done!

During free time Bayou 4 enjoyed all New Orleans

has to offer: the French Quarter and downtown,

coffee, sporting events, ice cream, and of course

beignets! Another highlight was seeing other

teams that were working in the area.

… vs the end!

Bayou 4

Round 3 sent Bayou 4 to southwest Florida

on another construction project. The team

worked with Charlotte County Habitat for

Humanity and was based out of Punta Gorda.

Bayou 4 worked at many different sites raising

walls, hanging trusses, putting up soffit and

siding, painting, and more. The team worked on

7 different houses throughout their time.

On days off, Bayou 4 explored the

surrounding areas’ offerings. There were trips to

Boca Grande, Fort Myers, Venice Beach, Key

West, Fort Lauderdale, and even a rodeo! The

team also enjoyed many different coffee and ice

cream shops in Punta Gorda.

Pasadena, MD

During Round 4 the team worked with

Girl Scouts of Central Maryland! The

majority of the work was done at Camp

Whippoorwill, but the team also worked

at the other 3 camps owned by the Girl

Scouts.

Bayou 4’s job was to fix up the camps

in order for them to be ready for the

summer season. There was a wide variety

of jobs to do all over camp. Clearing brush

and chainsawing were two important jobs

that took up most of the round. Other jobs

included clearing and patching roofs,

building stairs, painting, fixing latrines,

power-washing, and adding a boat launch.

Bayou 4’s hard work paid off, and the

camps look great!

During free time, the team

enjoyed all different kinds of

activities. A major perk was

free YMCA memberships

provided by the sponsor. The

team celebrated three

birthdays this round, and had

lots of fun doing so!

Over weekends Bayou 4 was able to travel to Baltimore,

Annapolis, and Washington DC. Team members saw the cherry

blossoms, a Nationals game, a Capitals game, and many museums

and monuments.

Bayou 5, Round 1: Mass Audubon

What a time!

From our very first moments surviving Super 8, we

have experienced so many highs and lows.

The project itself was all sorts of shenanigans and

fun- we bonded and worked alongside Kara the

tomato-throwing, Tom Brady-loving farm manager,

and went trekking through the woods with Matt and

Owen. We cut a trail! We discovered the joys of

harvesting heirloom tomatoes and wormy corn, and

just how many rocks there are in Mass Audubon soil.

We contributed to the communities of Sharon and

Mattapan, and our impact here will be long-felt.

As a team, we had a pretty interesting start. Eleven

strangers, thrown together to form a motley crew. We

didn’t always like one another. We didn’t always

understand one another. But through the power of

weird humor and shared trauma, we began to

transform into… something semi-functional!

Through Urgent Care and seemingly endless van

troubles, through improv jokes and Star Wars and

Grace’s obsession with Nebraska, we’ve grown. It’s

been a time. Tears were shed, compliments were

written. People saw the ocean for the first time!

Kitchen conversations were the best of conversations.

The view from the Bluff was amazing, and Adam’s

casserole-dish creations were the stuff of Mid-

Western legend.

It’s been a heck of a round. I don’t know what the

future may hold, and it’s probably gonna be gnarly

Wherever we're going, we'll get to it before we get

got! I’m proud of all you weirdos.

Delta 2 spent Round 1 in Marion,

North Carolina working alongside the

US Forest Service in the Grandfather

Ranger District of Pisgah National

Forest. They did a combination of

trails work & fire line construction wile

working with the fire & recreation

crews. Delta 2 reconstructed rolling

grade dip drains on 3 miles of hiking

trails & dug 1 mile of fire line to

prepare the forest for a prescribed

burn later in the year.

Overall, the team really

enjoyed their time in

North Carolina &

California. They are so

thankful for the

opportunities to make

a difference, the

extremly unique

experiences, and for

the knowledge they

have gained.

During the Round, Delta 2 was called out to

South Lake Tahoe, California in response to

the Caldor fire. They worked on a Type 2 Initial

Attack hand crew where their focus was mop

up & the prevention of hotspots from

reigniting. They covered 90 miles of line

within 14 shifts & were successful in

extinguishing close to 25 hotspots in those

shifts. They also used a total of 2,000 gallons

of water from helicopter bucket drops when

extinguishing a hotspot. Upon arrival, the

containment rate of the fire was 76% with

220,548 acres burned. When they left,

containment was up to 91% and a total of

221,795 acres burned.

Delta 2

Round 2

Bienville NF

Delta 2 had a fantastic 2nd round filled with beautiful

experiences. One of the major highlights of the round was the

amount of prescribed burning that we accomplished; over

4,000 acres were burned to help suppress and mitigate the

threat of wildfires. In addition, Delta 2 had many fantastic Isp

opportunities like working with The Salvation Army in their

food pantry and working with Jackson pride for an HIV

awareness dinner. Finally, Delta 2 had so many great sponsors

that taught us so much, like Jason, who taught us about a type

6 engine, working the pump on the machine, and refilling it.

Noah, our POC for the Bienville, was an absolute pleasure to

work with; he showed us the ins and outs of working in USFS

and also allowed us to have the opportunity to spend time

and bond with his wonderful dog Daisy. Overall, the team

learned a lot and gained valuable experience, and they are

super pleased with the work they accomplished.

Round 3

Conecuh National

Delta 2 spent their third round

in southern Alabama working

with the Conecuh National

Forest. Their time in

Andalusia was spent primarily

with fire & recreation crews,

but got the chance to work

with wildlife alongside the

forest's biologists. They burnt

5,989 acres in prescribed

burns, removed 2,033 acres

of brush to prevent wildfires,

worked with 5 endangered

species, built 4 footbridges,

and restored 400 acres of

wildlife habitat.

The team participated in a

variety of ISPs including a

trash pickup with Ocean

Hour Florida, painted picnic

tables and joined an ocean

cleanup with Navarre Beach

Delta 4

ROUND 2

Delta 4 spent their second round in the beautiful city of

Louisville in the Portland Neighborhood. During their time in

Louisville, the team worked with Louisville Grows’ Program

director, Lisa Dettlinger, and Louisville Grows’ Field director,

Mateo Barnett.

For eight weeks, Delta 4 took on the goal of planting

1,000 trees in areas that lacked a tree canopy through learning

how to properly plant a tree, which is actually much harder

than most people realize. The team learned this lesson the hard

way by having to redig holes and twist and rotate sizeable root

balls into proper placement dozens of times. They also

undertook the task of unloading 600 trees and delivery 300 to

homes throughout the 21 neighborhoods Louisville Grows

serves. While the team was working on their tree planting skills,

unloading and delivering trees, they gained new skills

surrounding their specialty roles and learned more about each

other.

Delta 4’s time with Louisville Grows overall taught the team

about tolerance and resilience in tough situations. There were

many days when tree planting and everyday chores grew to be

physically and mentally strenuous. Yet, the team pushed

through the physical and mental fatigue and was able to plant

600 trees and grow together as a team. The team owes much of

their strength to each other, family and friends, and to the

Louisville Grows staff, Lisa Dettlinger, Jacquelyn Ecklund,

Mateo Barnett, Kaleb “Storm” Fraley, Mallory Luckett, Chris

Perry, and Gillian, who welcomed the team with warmth and

kindness. Many of these bonds created with the Louisville

Grows Staff will last past round 2.

house, put up drywall, spackle,

and frame a porch. Fuller

Center’s staff and volunteers

were very helpful and happy to

answer any questions the team

may have had. Throughout their

stay, they were welcomed by the

community through dinners,

parades, and weekly yoga

nights. The kind people of

Hammond were definitely a

treat to get to know and will be

missed as Delta 4 moves onto

their next project.

DELTA 4

Round 4

Delta 4 had a split round where they spent

a month in New Orleans, LA working with

Nechama Jewish Response to Disaster.

During this month, the team learned how to

properly muck and gut while also gaining

skills on how to work with youth volunteer

groups and delegate tasks to them. In

Mississippi, Delta 4 worked in Wall Doxey

State Park, George P. Cossar State Park,

and Hugh White State Park. While working

in these parks, Delta 4 was able to

accomplish repairing a footbridge, weed

and mulch a sitting area, build a trail and a

fence. Delta 4 would like to thank their

sponsors Nechama Jewish Reponse to

Disaster and Mississippi Department of

Wildlife and Fisheries for the kindness and

hospitality they’ve extended to us.

Round 1

Delta 6

Winston-Salem, NC

Habitat for Humanity of Forsyth County

Delta 6 began their split round working

with Habitat for Humanity of Winston-

Salem, NC. They assisted in the

construction of new homes as well as

some renovation work. Each member

gained experience in tasks like roofing,

floor installation, and coping trim.

When off the worksite, they attended

very cool ISPs like Second Harvest Food

Bank where over 300 families were

served during the food drive. In

addition to this, their connection with

Habitat led them to work in the ReStore

helping to assemble furniture and

receive goods to be organized. With all

of this fun packed into just 3 weeks,

everyone was wishing they could stay a

little longer.

Round 1

Delta 6

Rockfall, CT

Connecticut Forest and Park Association

Delta 6 worked the second half of

round 1 for Connecticut Forest and

Park Association, an adventure with

many twists & turns. The team

improved upon each site through the

rehabbing of old trails, picking up

litter, and building various types of

bridges. Each member gained new

experiences with tools they had never

used before such as a hazel hoe, pick,

and table saw. Being outside all day

also gave them the opportunity to

personally reflect and feel more

connected to nature. One reoccurring

ISP was completed at the Hartford

Area Habitat ReStore where lumber

and decorations were sorted.

Round 2

Delta 6

Port Murray, NJ

AmeriCorps Disaster Assistance Response Team

Delta 6 began their split round working

with the AmeriCorps Disaster Assistance

Response Team in Port Murray, NJ. They

helped the community by mucking and

gutting homes that were impacted by

tropical storm Ida. Removing flooring, tile,

and drywall became routine for the team

and were skills that they improved upon

each day at the worksite. One of their ISPs

was spent at a horse therapy ranch where

they replaced old fencing and were lucky

enough to ride horses afterwards. Being on

the east coast also meant a New York day

trip where those who went were able to

experience some of the best pizza around

as well as take in the iconic sites.

Round 2

Delta 6

Washington D.C.

The Salvation Army

Delta 6 ended their split round with

The Salvation Army of Washington

D.C. They assembled gift bags for

over 3,300 kids in the Angel Tree

Program. Organizing became the

new norm and attention to detail

was the key to success. One cool ISP

in the area happened on

Thanksgiving Day with Food and

Friends. Attendees acted as the

"cheer squad" for volunteers who

were delivering meals to those

unable to leave their homes. D.C.

kept the whole team busy every

weekend with museums and

different sight seeing

opportunities.

Round 3

Delta 6

Houma, Lousiana

Catholic Charities of

Houma-Thibodaux

Delta 6 ended up working in disaster

with Catholic Charities of Houma-

Thibodaux. They mucked and gutted

over 10 homes, removing thousands

of pounds of debris during their stay

in Houma. Physical strength and

aptitude was crucial to this projects'

success. One ISP that was a breath

of fresh air was an animal shelter

called Terrebonne Parish Animal

Shelter. Attendees assisted in taking

dogs out to play; as well as helping to

clean kennels, bedding, and pet toys.

New Orleans gave the team a chance

to de-stress from busy work days by

visiting museums and experiencing

Cajun restaurants.

Round 4

Delta 6

Louisville, KY

Baptist Health Louisville

Delta 6 worked the first half of round

four in Louisville, KY with Baptist

Health. The team was split up to

complete many different tasks such

as inventory, cold food prep, and

delivering meal trays to patients.

There was never a dull moment and

staff always kept members on the go.

Delta 6 saw first hand just how

important each department is within

the hospital is and how effective

communication is key in order for

the operation to run smoothly. It was

rewarding for the corps members to

take care of the patients and be a

part of brightening their day. The

team was divided into two different

shifts throughout the day, so only

virtual ISPs were completed for

convenience sake.

Round 4

Delta 6

Corbin and Pineville, KY

Kentucky State Parks

Delta 6 was in Corbin and Pineville,

KY for the remaining half of the

round working with Cumberland

Falls and Pine Mountain State Park.

Members assisted staff with a variety

of tasks like leaf blowing, brush

removal, and organizing historical

artifacts. The team was able to

unwind and feel a sense of zen as the

outdoors became their main working

environment. Even on days where the

unexpected weather would keep them

indoors, the artifacts room and

recreation area were some of the

team's favorite places to spend time

organizing. Being so far out from

town, the team focused mainly on

virtual ISPs and less on in-person

volunteer opportunities.

Delta 7

spent their first round split

between Washington D.C and Sutton,

West Virginia. While in Washington D.C

the team worked with The Salvation

Army on multiple projects taking place

all across the DMV region. The main

project we worked on was called Angel

Tree and Delta 7 did everything from

helping make the packets for Angel Tree

to the administrative side approving

Angel Tree applicants. With weekly

painting and organizing storage projects,

Delta 7 kept busy in Washington D.C for

the first 10 weeks of the AmeriCorps

journey.

Delta 7

was sent to serve in Sutton,

West Virginia for two weeks towards the

completion of our first round. The team

worked with the U.S. Army Corps of

Engineers and were tasked with creating

a one mile trail through the Elk River

woods and refurbishing connecting trails

by collecting garbage and clearing

branches off the trails. The park rangers

were very knowledgeable about the area

and did not hesitate to share interesting

history, food recommendations, and fun

facts about Sutton. Sutton was a

physically challenging project in contrast

to D.C. which employed more office skills.

River 1

Round 1 - Hammond, Louisiana

River 1 was originally placed in Georgetown, DE, to build homes with Habitat for Humanity. Unfortunately,

things didn't go as planned and there was an issue with housing. Despite their rocky start, everyone

stayed optimistic and the situation served as a good bonding experience. The team got a new disaster

relief project in Hammond, LA to help the community respond to and recover from Hurricane Ida. They

stayed at the First Presbyterian Church of Hammond, assisting the Fuller Center Disaster Rebuilders with

mucking/gutting (post-flood), mold suppression, debris management, and long-term recovery

development. They became familiar with Crisis Cleanup, a disaster recovery coordination software, and

contacted homeowners to organize new projects for the group. Additionally, the group's chain sawyers

were deployed to remove trees from the roofs and yards around the community. They forged close

relationships with homeowners and community members; and during their two months in Hammond, the

team worked on over two dozen homes. Amidst the chaos, the team had the opportunity to visit the

Katrina National Memorial Museum in New Orleans, as well as attend a Swamp Tour (Cajun Encounters)

to learn more about the history and culture of the state of Louisiana.

River 1

Round 2 - NYC, New York

Although River one was initially placed in Trenton, New Jersey to work with Homefront, the team

once again faced housing issues and as a result was sent to assist with Hurricane Ida relief in

New York City. They were housed in an Extended Stay Hotel in Whitestone, New York for the

majority of the round, and their projects were scattered throughout four of five different boroughs

of the city: Queens, The Bronx, Brooklyn, and Staten Island. Working a rigorous schedule of

Monday through Saturday, the team spent most of their time refining their previously-learned

mucking and gutting skills, suppressing mold, and completing housing assessments for

homeowners in need of repairs. Over the course of the round, the team was also able to

collaborate with other AmeriCorps teams, which included Americorps St. Louis and Water 3

from Americorps NCCC Southwest Region. Despite the hectic schedule, the team still made

time for both educational and fun activities. They had the opportunity to visit the Statue of

Liberty, The Teardrop Memorial, The National September 11 Memorial Museum, The

Metropolitan Museum of Art, and The Museum of Natural History. Additionally, they were also

able to attend the annual Rockefeller Center Tree Lighting and the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day

Parade.

River 1

Round 3 - Charlotte, North Carolina

For round 3, River one served five weeks with Habitat for Humanity in Charlotte, North Carolina.

(Our first round with consistent housing and a non-disaster project!) Although everything worked

out, two team members tested positive for COVID-19 on the second day of work and were

quarantined for two weeks! The team persevered, however, and the round itself proved to be a

good one. The team spent the work week assisting Habitat with the construction of new homes

and repairs of existing homes, which included: learning how to frame houses, installing siding,

practicing safe operation of power tools, etc. Weekends were mostly spent doing ISPs at Lake

Norman National Park (trail maintenance) and The National Whitewater Center (Dog Days of

Winter event). The team also had the opportunity to explore downtown Charlotte and visit local

museums (Nascar Hall of Fame, Levine Museum of the New South, and The Mint Museum).

Throughout the round, the team also got to interact with Habitat for Humanity Americorps

State/National members, both during and after work hours, by playing “Wordle” together during

lunch breaks, hosting collaborative dinners, and participating in a karaoke outing.

River 1

Round 4 - Cataño, Puerto Rico

River 1 spent their final round serving with Caras Con Causa in Cataño, Puerto Rico, where

they dedicated most of their work hours to environmental and community development. The

team worked at a variety of different planting sites and natural reserves to plant and measure

the growth of trees, in the process learning how to properly use pickaxes, weedwackers,

machetes, calipers, and hypsometers; as well as participated in beach-cleanup and food

deliveries to elderly community members. The team also regularly worked at the community

schools to teach the children how to plant and maintain trees in an effort to integrate more

environmental work into the curriculum. The team did a wide range of different ISPs, which

included working with SBP Puerto Rico to aid with disaster-related home repairs, photographing

and analyzing at-risk sea urchins with Sociedad Ambiente Marino, and handing out food and

personal hygiene goods to the homeless with Iniciativa Comunitaria. In their free time, team

members enjoyed hiking (Charco Prieto and El Yunque National Rainforest), visiting beaches in

the area, trying local foods, and seeking out live music.

Habitat for Humanity of High Point,

Archdale, and Trinity

During Round 3, River 3 served in High Point, North Carolina with Habitat for Humanity of

High Point, Archdale, and Trinity. River 3 did the finishing touches on Connie's house and started

Hopeton and Rosemary’s House. The team learned so much from painting, insulating, landscaping, and

doing the footings of a home. During our time with Habitat for Humanity, River 3 got to be a part of the

dedication ceremony of Connie’s home and some CM’s were able to see the signing of the home.

River 3 got to see the beauty of eensboro as we got to take a tour of the murals. The team

did lots of team bonding activities, going out for smoothies and some even experienced snow for the first

time.

SBP

New Orleans, LA

During Round 4, River 3 was serving with SBP in New Orleans, LA. The

team helped SBP with its mission to decrease the time between the

disaster to recovery. River 3 helped with disaster recovery after hurricane

Ida by doing all forms of construction. Through working with the SBP

project leads and multiple volunteer groups, the team had so much fun

learning the ins and outs of construction from painting and mold

remediation to putting up drywall.

New Orleans was a fun place to be. The team enjoyed all the festivals and

live music, tried alligator for the first time, and went exploring in the

historic city.

River 4

Round 3

Camp Kiwanis

River 4 spent our third spike in Danielsville,

Georgia. We partnered with the Boys and Girls

Club of Metro Atlanta (BGCMA.) Our main

objective for the round was to complete Fort

James, which had been started by a previous

NCCC team, Bayou 3. Finishing it was far from

an easy task. Many of us learned siding,

chinking, and various other construction site

skills that we otherwise wouldn’t have known.

Secondary tasks, such as landscaping and

leveling the basement, provided for a nice

change of rhythm in our day to day operations.

Our supervisors, Daniel and Sam, were

wonderful to have as mentors. They both

brought their own unique touch to the

worksite and always left us with a sense of

accomplishment.

Carly, the camp director, never failed

to enthusiastically tell us what a

wonderful job we were doing.

O’Bryan, the service desk manager,

was a very fun presence and someone

who gave our team many fantastic

recommendations on places to visit

while in Georgia. During our stay we

had the opportunity to work on the

Appalachian Trail for an ISP, as well

as a food bank. These were both

incredibly enjoyable projects for our

team. During our free time we

participated in Gaga Ball, kayaking,

archery, and even took a trip to

Atlanta for an entire day! All in all,

this round was filled with challenges,

excitement, and accomplishments

galore. We were able to complete

eight months worth of work in just

five weeks. Our team agreed that this

was a great round… GROUND!

River 4

Round 4

Beans and Rice

River 4 spent the first half of our 4th spike in

Pulaski, Virginia. We worked for Beans and

Rice; a non profit that focuses on food stability

in low-income familie’s lives. Our site

supervisor, Lee, was a woman of many talents.

She spent countless hours preparing for us,

welcoming us with open and eager arms, and

had an infectious love for the line of work we

were doing. Her training, alongside the help of

other employees, provided us with the vision

she saw for the orginization and the means to

achieve it. Everyone contributed in a

monumental way to the organization. One of

the most notable results of our efforts was a

mural painted our very own Holly Fink!

We were able to support local

businesses, such as Max on Main and

Tuscano’s Pizza. Our team was fortunate

enough to speak at Virginia Tech in

front of a fellow service driven

organization in hopes of inspiring

others to join. Other important figures

in our team with Beans and Rice include

Dianne, Jack, and Phillip. All played a

vital role in Beans and Rice’s success

and were more than enthused to

introduce us to their corner of the nonprofit.

It was the accumulation of

appreciation, behind the scenes of a

non-profit, and the people themselves

that made our team with Beans and Rice

so pleasant. We won’t forget the life

experience we gained while working

alongside such an incredible

organization!

River 4

Round 4

Dubkin, VA

River 4 spent the second have of our 4th spike

in Dublin, Virginia. We were partnered with

the city’s fire management crew. Our day to

day operations consisted of using chainsaws,

felling trees, bucking and limbing, and wood

chipping. Our usual site supervisors, Conner

and Parker, were both valuable and

appreciated presences to our workday. They

both brought experience, plenty of laughs, and

an overall increase in work morale. Brad and

Caleb were additional hands on-site,

time/schedule permitting. Their knowledge

and leadership were needed tools for our team

to develop the skills we did.

Our team spent our free time

exploring Claytor Lake State park,

visiting TJ’s, and watching plenty of

horror/action movies. Our housing

provided great grounds for hide and

seek, tag, and various other fun,

outdoorsy games! In the lines of ISP

we helped our previous sponsor,

Beans and Rice, as well as churches

with meal-packing for families. Our

Easter was spent painting eggs and

followed by a very wonderful Easter

Morning; prepared by our very own

Team Leader, Caleb Rigdon. All in all,

our time spent in Dublin, Virginia left

us with many new skills, fond

memories, and farmer’s tans!

enjoyed being in downtown Hartford visiting museums and murals for DIS and SLI

activities. During this round many new indoor PT ideas were implemented as the

weather did not always permit outdoor PT. These PT activities included Mario Cart PT

and silent library PT. This was also the first round with the teams new TL Adam

Bridges. River 5 enjoyed getting to know their new Team Leader and their new Corps

Member Maya Cecil. During our project we worked at 3 different work sites. The first

being a house that was still in the middle of its construction phase in which we built

and set up interior was for along with doing some duct work. Our second work site

was the Vernon restore in which we moved and assembled merchandise in and then

assisted in the opening day. Our last work site included two houses that we in the

final stages of construction. In these houses we did finish work which includes

painting, flooring, caulking, and spackling.

River Six

River Six was in Punta Gorda, FL working with Charlotte County Habitat

for Humanity. During their time on the worksite the team learned

framing, siding, and interior work. River Six quickly realized their ratio of

hitting the nail versus the wood wasn't much to be proud of, but by the

end of their stay here they were NAILING it ;) The site supervisors made

everyday interesting, exciting, and memorable. Without their unique

personalities, River Six wouldn't have learned and succeeded to the extent

they did. The team volunteered with the Animal Welfare League on the

weekends; walking dogs, cuddling with cats, and playing with pigs

became a highlight of their stay in Charlotte County. In the team's spare

time they went paintballing, rode bikes, went fishing, saw live music, and

ran in a local 5k. PG 4 LIFE.

For Round 2 River Six made our way to Johns Island South Carolina to work

with Sea Island Habitat for Humanity. While there we had the privilege to use

our construction skills in a different way while de and re-shingling, and laying

foundation for pier lifted houses. We enjoyed our quirky supervisors and

stories about them that still leave us baffled to this day, but also were grateful

to gain deep relationships with the Americorps State and National Members

working alongside us. We were settling in nicely, hitting the beaches, going to

Motown Showdown at the Pour House, and taking crazy early morning gym

trips. Just as we were getting comfy and cozy we were abruptly told that we’d

be heading to Boutte, LA for disaster relief. This shocked us, as we were not

expecting to ever be called on disaster, but we took it with a positive attitude

and made the move. While on disaster our spike took a more serious turn,

forcing all of us to come face to face with the devastation of Hurricane Ida that

was tucked away in smaller communities just outside New Orleans. We

observed the patience of the homeowners and the dedication of our supervisors

at a level that made us laugh and cry, along with the fridged cold showers that

made us scream.

supervisors, volunteers, and homeowners. When the work day ended, the team drove

away from the busy urban worksite to a secluded girl scout camp where we enjoyed

bonfires, went for hikes, and took a very cold dip in the Chesapeake Bay! We also had

invasive species removal.

During their time in Florida, the

team removed about 10,000

pounds of underbrush, painted

many structures, and controlled

2 acres of invasive species. On

the weekends, the team

enjoyed exploring St.

Petersburg, going to the beach,

and hiking in Starkey

Wilderness Park.

For the last 3 weeks of the

round, Tide 1 worked at Camp

Lee in Anniston, Alabama doing

camp maintenance and trail

building. The team spent time

swimming in waterfalls, hiking

in the mountains, and hanging

out.

Tide II

Percy Quin and

Natchez State Parks

For round one, Tide II worked with the

Mississippi Department of Wildlife,

Fisheries, and Parks within Percy Quin

and Natchez state parks. On their first

day, however, they assisted the local

sheriff department in disaster

response after Hurricane Ida by

passing out over 600 cases of water

to people in areas whose homes did

not have electricity or running water.

At Percy Quin, the team cleared 12

acres of tree limbs that had fallen

after the storm. They also repaired

three boardwalks and surveyed 4

miles of hiking trails for storm

damage. In Natchez, the team

pressure-washed 7 buildings,

numerous campsite benches, and

repainted 57 grills throughout the

park. Both site supervisors were kind

and understanding, and even taught

the team how to fish!

Tide II completed three ISPs during

this round, one at Wings Domestic

Abuse Shelter Thrift Store, another at

PALs Animal Rescue, and the last at

HoofBeats and Pawprints Rescue. The

team thoroughly enjoyed their time at

these locations. The views of the lakes

outside their cabins were spectacular,

and on their off-time in Natchez, they

were able to enjoy all the perks of

living near a popular filming

destination for Hallmark movies!

Tide II

Disaster Relief in

Louisiana

While working in the Mississippi state

parks, Tide II was called to do disaster

relief in Louisiana. They worked

alongside SBP, a nonprofit that works

to shrink the time between disaster

and recovery. In total, the team

mucked and gutted 11 homes and

mold remediated 10 of those during

the three weeks they worked in the

area. Living in New Orleans, Tide II

made plenty of great memories

outside of work exploring all the city

has to offer: walking through the

French Quarter, watching live music,

and eating great food!

Tide 2

Chincoteague National Wildlife

Refuge, Virginia

At the top of the

lighthouse with Kayla!

For round two, Tide 2 worked in the

Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge

on Assateague Island, Virginia. The

refuge is home to many plant and

animal species, and spans over 14,000

acres of land - of which there are beach,

dune, marsh, and maritime forest

ecosystems.

Tide 2's work was in constructing fences

to protect critical bird habitats from

wild pony overgraze. The new fences

offer a way to rotate pony grazing across

different areas.

In total, the team planted 845

fence posts, braced 79 fencing

brackets, and strung 3 miles of

wire. They completed several

ISPs and were able to really

build lasting relationships within

their community!

Cedar Crest Camp

Lyles, tn

For round 3, Tide 2

worked at Cedar Crest

Camp, where they completed

numerous projects to aid in the

camp's environmental mission.

One of the focuses was creating

terraces on the bank of a lake to

prevent erosion, which the team

constructed 1200 sq. ft. of before

laying jute mats as extra erosion

control, and then seeding the area

with native grasses. Tide 2 was

able to perform controlled burns

around 1 acre of the camp's land to

remove invasive species and allow

native plants to thrive. They also

restored 3.5 miles of hiking trails,

built 2.5 miles of new trail, built

several bridges, and constructed 11

benches!

Tide 2

Catholic Charities of

Acadiana,

Lafayette, LA

For round four, Tide 2

worked alongisde

Catholic Charities of

Acadiana, where they

focused on disaster

rehabilitation in

hurricane-prone

Louisiana. The team was

able to tarp 5 roofs to

protect them from

disaster damage,

renovate two homes,

distribute 150 meals,

and construct 5 disaster

crates to support the

Catholic Charities

warehouse.

On their free time, the

team experienced all the

rich culture Lafayette had

to offer. They attended

Festival Acadiens et

Creole, went to a local Holi

festival, had an authentic

crawfish boil, and saw live

Zydeco music, even

befriending performer

Donna Angelle! Lafayette

was amazing. They spent

their last three weeks

Tide 5

Round 1

For Tide 5’s 1st round, we took our beloved

van, Mountain Mama ,to Norton, Virginia

where we spent our days in the shade of the

Flag Rock mountains beautifying our

communities, shining light upon it’s citizens,

and shaping the path of future generations. In

other words, we made some fall decorations,

painted some lampposts, and formed some

mountain biking trails. Tide 5 had a good time

working in Norton, and an even better time

not working in Norton. To the casual

Nortonite, our team could be seen hitting up

El Dorado or the Woodbooger Grill (outdoor

dining), drowning in a waterfall or the “lake”,

or doing some mountain biking ourselves. But

alas, for every time there is a season, and Tide

5’s season in Norton came to an unexpected

end, for disaster was coming. Tide 5 took our

trusty steeds all the way from Virginia to

Louisiana, where we spent a memorable two

weeks doing some light home makeover work

(aka mucking and gutting). Although we

didn’t quite reach the standard of MTV Cribs,

we were able to help out a lot of people in

need.

TIDE 5

Round 2

Tallahassee

Florida

For the second round Tide 5 served in Tallahassee Florida working with iGrow Garden helping

Miaisha Mitchell and Elder Ivy maintain, harvest, and add to the garden in many different ways.

We were asked not only to do work in the garden but also to work behind the scenes by writing

grants, planning out construction packets for a long term market stand, a walking path through

the garden and other permanent projects. We also completed several projects such as building a

bench, building a fire pit, chainsaw carving seats out of stumps and building and repairing raised

beds. Not only did we add to the garden in that way, we also did gardening tasks like mulching,

weeding, watering and so many other various things! During our time Tallahassee we stayed in

the Florida People’s Advocacy Center where we each got to stay in our our rooms! We’ve learned

so much about the community of Tallahassee, especially the Frenchtown District, and met so

many awesome people while spending time there!

Tide 5

Round 3

Lafayette Louisiana

and Owensboro

Kentucky!

For round three, Tide 5

worked with Habitat for

Humanity in Lafayette

Louisiana for less than

two weeks before being

pulled on disaster to

Owensboro Kentucky.

We were called to help

the highly understaffed

Owensboro Health

Regional Hospital. We

were strictly non-clinical

but were able to offset

some of the daily tasks

of the staff. It was an

interesting time as it was

the first time the hospital

had had an AmeriCorps

team but we did get high

praise from those staff

members who knew why

we were there.

TIDE 5

Round 4 Rutherford NC

with Rutherford Housing

Partnership

For Tide 5’s last round we served in the beautiful

foothills of the Appalachian Mountains! We

worked with the Rutherford Housing

Partnership, a nonprofit dedicated to providing

urgently needed repairs to the homes of

qualified low-income, elderly and disabled

homeowners in Rutherford County, North

Carolina. In our free time we were able to go on

numerous hikes, visit both Charlotte and

Asheville, and engage in local community

activities.

“As the days waned and the home-screen widgets counted

down, Tide 5 heard the accelerating tick tick of our time

together coming to a close, spelling the end of this

adventure and calling us to the next. Emotions spilled out of

us like insulation on disaster. Relief. Excitement. Nostalgia.

Regret. A pressure to seize the day, to suck the marrow out

of this experience. The mantra, ‘it’s fine, soon I’ll never have

to see these people again’. Like the waves of a Tide.”

“After living with someone for 9 months, you pick up on

their quirks and idiosyncrasies. And yeah, they can be

annoying. But knowing they’ll be gone, that their own

special brand of weirdness won’t be in your life anymore,

makes you appreciate what was once barely tolerated.”

Myrtle

Beach

Tide 6 spent two weeks in Myrtle

Beach helping Habitat for

they got to experience many fun

things such as the beach and

got to know each other each

other through time spent in each

others company. Working with

Habitat for Humanity helped Tide

6 learn many new useful skill.

They learned how to put up

sidings and how to put up walls!

Tide 6 Round 2 Project 2

Jackson

Tide 6 spent their last half of round 2 in the capital city of Jackson, Mississippi. They worked

with the city to help clean up roads and parks. The team also helped with cleaning up a

senior center and even got to design a new garden layout for it! They met all kinds of great

people and even got to attend lectures at MSU. During one of the days while working to pick

up trash, they found a stray dog who decided to follow them wherever they went. Delighted

by this, the team decided to name him Oscar. They decided to keep him around for a little

while. Eventually Oscar decided that his stay was over and wandered off on his own again.

Tide 6 Round 3

Big Cypress

Tide 6 spent their last couple of weeks together

as a team in Florida. They were lucky to have

gotten a project working at Big Cypress

National Park which was right next to the

Everglades. With only 5 people left on their

team, their projects while on the worksite took

a bit longer but they made sure to get it done.

At first, they worked on a garden at one of the

visitor centers doing things such as pulling

weeds and laying down new mulch. Even

though it was just a visitors center, it had a lot

to offer. Some days the team would be able to

see manatees swimming around in the canals

and there were almost always alligators there.

Once they finished at the visitors center, Tide 6

helped map hiking trails by hiking them, this

also helped the team refine their GPS skills.

Most of the time the team would have to hike

through knee deep water. No matter how long

the hike or how hard it was to constantly be

walking with wet boots and pants, they never

tired of it. The views on the hikes were

absolutely stunning and the team even got to

see a rare salamander and some panther tracks.

They were lucky enough to not have any close

encounters with gators. Despite not having

much service at housin, they made the most of

their stay by exploring the outside and going to

the beach. As Big Cypress is a dark park, the

team spent a lot of nights outside looking at the

stars. Big Cypress was truly a magical place

filled with beauty in every corner.
