Virtual Private
Networks
the possibilities are endless
Community Telco: Personal service,
powerful solutions, proven community
contributor
When commercial revenue stays in a region, the region grows stronger. Community
Telco, an initiative of Bendigo and Adelaide Bank, was created to capture everyday
telco expenditure that would normally leave our region.
Community Telco provides premium grade business services, delivered with a high
level of personal service from your local account manager. There are no automated
answering systems, you’ll be serviced by dedicated staff always right there when
you need them, and with our Platinum support service you’ll have access to
technical support 24/7.
By aggregating local demand and providing business solutions, your local
Community Telco can offer you a range of national products and services at a
comparable price but with far greater personal service than any other telco.
Virtual Private Networks
Your business is dependent on the performance of its network. So your networking
solutions have a lot riding on them. They must provide increased reach, greater
application awareness, and a higher capacity to improve response times – while
lowering implementation and operating costs.
Just as importantly, they must offer a high level of data security, flexibility and come
with complete backup support.
You gain access to features not usually available to SMEs
A Virtual Private Network provides private data transfer paths for customer traffic
and one of the major benefits of this is better security. Data privacy is a big issue
and serious damage to your brand and reputation could occur should your data
become compromised or competitors gain access. A Virtual Private Network gives
you access to data centres that provide a high level of security while making your
data more accessible for you.
Many businesses must move quickly with changing markets. A Virtual Private
Network allows rapid change in its design, and functionality that gives you
complete flexibility. It’s an effective choice of technologies to serve your growth and
performance requirements.
A Virtual Private Network can also eliminate the frustration of having to manage
several technologies and the supplier relationships that surround them. It creates
a relationship based on a customer solution, rather than a series of connectivity
options. So your business will have a complete managed service, end-to-end,
replacing a collection of supply agreements.
A Virtual Private Network also enables data to be transferred between your separate
sites without impacting on your monthly data usage (excluding peer-to-peer traffic).
With the committed support of your local Community Telco, your Virtual Private
Network will continue to provide your business with the foundation you need to
meet all your future networking requirements.
Accessing a Virtual Private Network can also open future possibilities for your
business. One example is the range of hosted services – such as email, storage,
disaster recovery and backup – which will continue to become increasingly important
for business. A stolen or destroyed physical server would cause enormous problems
for any organisation. Access to hosted services is also important for rapid up scaling
when a business experiences growth or has short term, intense requirements. Talk to
your sales representative about the hosted services we are currently developing.

A Virtual Private Network setup consists of three key components - the core network,
access tails, and the associated hardware. Additional optional components that can
be purchased from Community Telco include internet, firewalls (mandatory for an
internet connection) and ongoing technical support.
Access tails can also be set up with 3G failover, which enables your network to stay
online even in the event of a structural outage.
The advantages for your business
Performance
We deliver high reliability and top performance with access speeds up to 1Gbps
(depending on location). Our fully protected and redundant backbone is engineered
to support your access demands, providing high throughput and efficiency.
Reliable core network
Our network is highly stable with 99.95% targeted uptime; reliable enough to service
a major Australian bank.
Extensive coverage
Our network provides coverage throughout Australia and overseas, providing the
ability to create the ‘best fit’ of access technology for each individual location.
Security
Your data traffic is secure and fully segregated across the Community Telco
backbone. Your network is completely isolated; no component is accessible by or
visible to unauthorised parties or the public internet unlike a public network.
Integrated internet access
Choosing to have a single internet connection at a core point in the network
allows you to protect the entire network from unauthorised access via the internet
using only one firewall. You can use a standard security policy on just one internet
connection, which also helps deliver much better network performance.
* ‘MPLS’ (Multi Protocol Label Switching) is a standard technical term used by most carriers. MPLS provides a method of extracting the
underlying telecommunications network/infrastructure to provide a simplified and secure network for the end customer; i.e. it creates a
completely virtual network inside the carrier’s network.
Quality of Service
As part of our ongoing commitment to develop additional services, Community Telco
offers the capacity for customer specific Quality of Service configuration, so that you
can set levels of importance to prioritise business-critical traffic and better manage
throughput and latency. During the design process our engineers will consult with
you to understand your specific information technology environment.
Flexible local access connectivity options
We support multiple local access connectivity options to connect your site to our
network. By utilising our extensive wholesale carrier relationships we help you
select the local access tail option (i.e. the connection between exchange and your
premises) that meets your budget, speed, reliability and redundancy needs. We are
not solely dependent on our own infrastructure to connect your sites, but choose the
best all round option from multiple sources.
Faster and easier IP VPN communication
We enable any of your sites to connect to another by the shortest possible route.
As with traditional networks, there is no need for your remote sites’ data to travel via
the central site. This allows you to configure your setup to support latency sensitive
applications like IP telephony (dependent on connection type, distance from the
exchange and other infrastructural influences).
High scalability
Add sites and expand your network easily, quickly and without major disruption to
your operations.
Greater value
Avoid making incremental equipment investments that increase your costs and risk
of obsolescence. Improve the effectiveness of your network with a range of solutions
including network-based firewalls, internet access and remote access services.
Management options
Improve productivity by utilising Community Telco’s expertise to design, install,
manage and maintain your network. We offer flexibility in how your network is
managed, from self managed where your own IT staff are in control, to fully managed
where we take care of your network for you.
Standby links and recovery options
Ensure business continuity by designing your network with the provision for
secondary connections to a disaster recovery site in the event of failure at your
primary business site. To allow increased flexibility, secondary access can be via
mobile broadband as well as a standard cable connection.
Simple network management and visibility
Manage your network utilisation and availability with our web-based tools.
Managed services
Community Telco can offer you managed services that simplify the day-to-day
management of your entire Virtual Private Network. The main features of this
service are:
• End-to-end management of your Private IP Network (PIPN), even at the smallest sites.
• Freeing up of IT staff to focus on business applications, rather than running the
Wide Area Network (WAN).
• Availability of a range of routers to suit different situations.
• Direct access to our Technical Assistance Centre (depending on your service
agreement).
• Technical assistance available during business hours or 24/7, depending on your
service agreement.
Technical support
If your IT department is suitably equipped you may choose to self manage your
network, however Community Telco also offers technical support services via our
dedicated Technical Assistance Centre. We offer ‘Premium Support’ during business
hours (9am - 5pm AEST/AEDT, with extended hours also available) and ‘Platinum
Support’ for 24/7 assistance. Our support includes guaranteed response Service
Levels Agreements and progress updates.
Hosting services
As we grow and expand, Community Telco is developing hosting services which
will become a powerful tool for businesses requiring higher levels of flexibility and
reliability for their IT infrastructure while maintaining control and security over their
corporate data. An increasingly wide range of options will become available to
suit different business requirements, including simple, low cost website hosting,
dedicated web and application servers, virtual servers, and co-location services such
as storage, mail filtering, etc.
Access types
Mix and match your connection types to best meet the requirements of each of your
separate sites and increase cost effectiveness across your network. Our suite of
internet services include:
ADSL
ADSL stands for Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line service. It is called asymmetric
because the download and upload speeds are not generally symmetrical (download
is faster than upload). The following speeds are available: 256kbps/64kbps,
512kbps/128kbps, 512kbps/512kbps, 1500kbps/256kbps or 8000kbps/384kbps.
ADSL2+
ADSL2+ adds new features and functionality targeted at improving performance and
interoperability and adds support for new applications and services. ADSL2+ has
only one speed: 24000kbps/1000kbps (24Mbps/1Mbps).
Ethernet over copper
Delivered over standard phone lines, multiple copper pairs are bonded enabling
close to the speeds of fibre without the build costs of fibre, with download and
upload speeds up to 20Mbps/20Mbps.
SHDSL
SHDSL allows symmetrical download and upload speeds and can provide upload
speeds up to seven times faster than ADSL upload speeds. Ideal for offices needing
to send files, host video content, or be accessed via remote desktop sessions from
smaller offices or teleworkers.
BDSL
BDSL is almost identical to SHDSL, but capable of speeds up to 4Mbps/4Mbps
whereas SHDSL is only capable of up to 2Mbps/2Mbps.
Fibre connectivity
Premium performance Ethernet links with interstate and local coverage, suitable for
corporate requirements.
Note: VPN business grade service level agreements are not available on ADSL or
ADSL2+ access tails.
A new focus on business data
Community Telco provides the opportunity to place data rate restrictions of 64kbps
on all peer-to-peer traffic across the network, effectively prioritising business critical
information.
Customers downloading music, videos, etc. on a peer-to-peer platform (i.e. non-business
type activities) will have those downloads slowed so priority can be given to business
data traffic. Note: media content streaming (‘watch as you download’) is not peer-to-peer.
You also have the option of a ‘raw’ connection which places no restrictions on
peer-to-peer traffic.
Peer-to-peer
Business data
Community Telco provides optional peer-to-peer traffic restrictions.
Great additional value
Connecting your internet services through Community Telco will also allow you to
monitor your internet data usage through our online MyServiceCentre portal.
When you go online to MyServiceCentre you’ll find a data usage meter, where you
can view your usage patterns on any of your new services and arrange notifications
to be sent to you when you are approaching your limit.
There are no excess data charges - when you reach your limit your service will be
slowed instead.
And to make things even easier, all your Community Telco services will be on the one bill.
