Newsletter #18 Thursday 18 th October 2012 School Student Roll : 556
WELCOME BACK – Students , Staff and School Families Dates for 2012
Term 4 School Ends 12noon - Thursday 20 th December
Staff – Congratulations New Addition to the Family …..
Mrs Erin Westgate (nee’ Mandeno) had a baby girl over the holidays (Oct. 4 th). They have named her Milla. She weighed just under 7lb. Mother
and baby are both doing well, and Erin reports that she loves being a new mum.
Room 7 – Teacher Change
This week we welcomed established Te Rapa teacher Miss Sarah Ludbrook back into the full-time teaching team, from her part-time role (Mrs
Westgate now on maternity leave). If you haven’t already, Room 7 parents are asked to pop-in and introduce yourself to Miss Ludbrook over
these next few weeks.
Unpaid Accounts 2012
It is really important that these are settled please. If you have not popped-in to speak with administration staff, then please do so. This includes
the $50 school donation we expect for each student … remember that school donations are tax deductible, technicraft fees, Summer / Winter
sports subs, EOTC Camp fees for Yr 5 & 6 (Tui Ridge) or Yr 7 & 8 (Sports Camp or Snow Camp). We simply cannot carry these costs.
Term 4 Long Term Plan – This will come home tomorrow with all students. Note - School Closed : Monday 22 nd Oct. (Labour Day)
REMINDER – Our school needs to update our pre-enrolment database Can you help please ?
Established Te Rapa parents and friends of our school can certainly help us as we try to encourage communication with the parents of
pre-schoolers. This includes all families with pre-schoolers in the school’s immediate Pukete and Pukete North area, and also over the river into
our school’s catchment areas of Flagstaff, the River Road North subdivisions, Rototuna and all other new north city development areas. This is
for in-zone families, as well as out-of-zone families. Our hope is to …
• ensure parents with pre-schoolers ie. 1 – 4 year olds, who are interested in enrolling their child(ren) at Te Rapa Primary School in 2013
– 2015 have contacted our school to register their interest. We need their child’s name, D.O.B and address.
• ensure any parents of children residing ‘out of zone’ have been in and completed an enrolment ballot form so their child(ren) can be
considered for an out of zone place at Te Rapa Primary School for Terms 1 & 2 next year (see Hamilton Press paper)
Please help us by approaching people you know who have pre-schoolers, and ask them to email admin@terapa.school.nz or phone (07)
8492232 to alert Te Rapa that our school is a possible primary school option for their child(ren) in the future.
Having their child’s details logged at Te Rapa does not lock them into this school. They are free to choose another school in the future, but it
ensures we are up-to-date with possible enrolments and this is important when we plan for the future.
Students NOT Returning in 2013
URGENT - If your son / daughter is NOT returning to Te Rapa Primary School next year please contact office staff to confirm this. We need to
know as soon as possible as we calculate our projected roll numbers for 2013. This is especially important with Yr 6 students moving to Yr 7.
Incentive Achievement Awards …. to acknowledge hard-working Te Rapa Primary School Students
So far this year I have completed hundreds of individual “principal” certificates for hard working and well behaved Te Rapa students. I
thoroughly enjoy completing these, and meeting with these students to acknowledge them and their efforts is always a highlight. A lucky draw
was carried out late last term and those children with a set of 6 coupons and who received a Principal’s certificate had a chance to win one of
the fantastic ‘sponsored’ prizes. Saying “Thank You” to their sponsor is part of winning a prize so PARENTS / CARERS are asked to assist
the school by making sure your son / daughter has contacted their sponsor (contact details were in the packs) to express their appreciation.
Every child who receives a sponsored gift pack must say thank you on behalf of Te Rapa Primary School.
Winter Sports Term 2 – 3 2012 “HUGE” Thank you to parents, caregivers and friends of our school ….
If you have taken a Te Rapa team this winter as a coach or a manager please accept this as a personal “thank you” from all of the students you
have been involved with. You are a valued member of our Te Rapa family, and we are grateful for your assistance. We could not enter teams
into regular mid-week and weekend competition without the support and assistance of positive parents / caregivers who generously volunteer
their time to be there for the children first and foremost. It is their sport, and as parents it’s our role to nurture and encourage them.
Summer Sports Term 4 2012 HELP PLEASE ….
A large number of children have indicated that they would like to be involved in summer sports events this term, and we cannot field Te Rapa
Primary School teams in these competitions unless we get enough volunteer parents willing to give their time to coach and / or manage. We
also need supportive (and tolerant) parents to give a hand throughout the season too. As a school we realise that more and more of our parents
are working beyond 5pm mid-week and also on Saturdays, but if we cannot guarantee the parental assistance required then we simply cannot
enter the teams, and the children miss out. Please contact Sports Co-ordinator - Mr Tony Su’a R.21 to express your interest in any summer
sports or ……Email tsua@terapa.school.nz

Literacy Focus Book Week : 29th October to 2nd November
Raising the profile of reading with students and families is our real goal, and I am pleased to report that our book week and the numerous
activities we will hold across the school will be a huge “hit” with the students. Thanks must go to the literacy / library team for their planning and
organisation, in particular Asst. Principal – Mrs Robyn Pilcher and Librarian – Mrs Alison Baucke. It is pleasing to see lots of fun things
happening in our school library and also around the subject of “reading”. I invite parents, grandparents and friends of the school to support book
week and the scheduled events.
Education Outside the Classroom – Term 4 Trips Off-Site
This term there are lots of excursions being organised to provide students with a “hands on” experience that will support what we are doing in
our classrooms. Parents will be asked to contribute towards transporting their child(ren), and this will be in the form of a few dollars to help with a
bus or similar to get the students to the venue(s). Staff have worked hard to keep costs down, and the school is also subsidising costs too.
Student Leadership at Te Rapa Primary School Is you son / daughter a ‘future leader’ ? Are they ready for 2013 ?
As Principal I expect all student leaders / seniors to lead from the front and set an example to others. I make no apologies for placing high
expectations on our senior students and those ready for leadership at other levels. I also expect big things from our younger students too. They
must “buy into” the role of responsibility if they choose to accept an important leadership role / position. It is not appropriate for Te Rapa’s future
leaders to act or behave in an inappropriate way either in school or in the wider community. They must be on their best behaviour consistently,
and make us (school and family) proud of them. It is important that our future leaders use Term 4 this year to start showing us that they are
ready to step up for 2013. Staff are looking now to see which students are worthy of leadership roles for next year.
World Teacher’s Day Next Friday - 26 th October
I would hope Te Rapa students might make a fuss of their teacher on Friday next week with a kind word of ‘genuine thanks’ for the extra effort
teachers go to in ‘making a difference’ for every child. This includes our support staff too because they too are key contributors to making Te
Rapa Primary a popular and sort after school. It is the people at Te Rapa who make the difference. Our staff deserve an extra big ‘thank you”.
Team & Group Photos 2012
Masterpiece Photography plan to have the pre-ordered photos delivered to us early this term. Please anticipate these coming home within the
next week or so.
2012 Special Commemorative Year 8 “Leavers Photo”
Parents of those year 8 students who will be leaving our school at the end of this year are reminded that orders and payment for 2012
commemorative “Leavers photos” will be offered soon. Please anticipate order forms being sent home, and return these to the office.
After School Learn to Swim Classes 2012 – 2013 Summer
If you are interested in these after-school ‘learn to swim’ lessons being organised by swim coach Steve Threadgold, then contact Steve via.
email admin@swimsupport.co.nz or phone (021)0698242. Places will fill quickly, just as they did last year, so it will be first in first served.
Sun Hats - Strongly Recommended
Please remember to send your son / daughter to school with their hat and instruct them to put it on when they go outside during the summer
term. Our school strongly recommends children wear their hats when they’re in the outdoors throughout terms 1 and 4.
Student Annual Art Competition 2012 Is your child thinking about their entry in this year’s competition ?
Our school’s art sponsor – Mr Ron Astrella will once again frame our children’s art work if they are successful in our annual competition. The
school “foots the bill” to have this done by a professional in exchange for the winning art work being loaned to the school for display in the
administration building for 2 years. After which the children will get their professionally framed art work back to keep. Mrs Marian Conder R.14
and Mrs Gloria Coromandel R.20 will send home more information soon.
Would you like some of your children’s art work framed to hang on the wall at home too ?
Ron is willing to negotiate very favourable rates with any Te Rapa Primary School parents / grandparents regarding any art work you
might like framed. Identify yourself as a Te Rapa parent when you contact him and mention that you appreciate his support of your
child’s school. His details are Ron Astrella – Picture Framers, 171 Ohaupo Road, Glenview Ph. 8436672.
PTA “Scrap Metal” Fundraiser
This PTA fundraising opportunity is taking place after Labour Weekend, so please see the flyer later in this newsletter. School families, extended
families and friends of the school are asked to bring scrap metal to the school and put it in the collection bin which will be positioned in the rear
school car-park. The school will be paid for the metal we collect, and the children will benefit.
Cups & Trophies All students with cups and trophies that were awarded at the 2011 end of year prize giving are asked to give their cup /
REMINDER trophy a good clean and return it to Mrs Lawrence in the office sometime in November please.
Lost Property - It is a good idea for parents to check the lost property each time you’re at school. Students are encouraged to also check
regularly too. REQUEST – Please name your child’s clothing inside the waist band or collar so our monitors can return items to their owners.
Thank you for your continued support of Te Rapa Primary School …. Waikato’s 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010 & 2012 “Top School”
Citizenship with Excellence
Whole School Skill Focus at Te Rapa School 2012
Principal: Vaughan Franklin Values Coordinator: Christine Troon
PURPOSE: To highlight school-wide, the importance of being a good
citizen and the skills required for being a good citizen
Responsibility
TERM 4: Beginning- 15 October
Ending- 16 November
Being responsible means that others can depend on
you.
Responsibility means doing what you say you will do and giving
your best to any job. When you are responsible, you get things
done with commitment and pride.
EDUCATIONAL GOALS:
CHILDREN LEARN:
What responsibility is and what a responsible person does
Why it is important to behave responsibly
How irresponsible behaviour can damage their relationships with others
That being a responsible person results in better friendships
How to solve problems by thinking
FOR PARENTS:
Be dependable and show others
that you can be relied upon!
Have a discussion about responsibility in the family. What are your child’s responsibilities and what are your
responsibilities? Perhaps make a chart.
What happens if we behave irresponsibly?
How does taking responsibility make your home a happier place to be?
Catch your child being responsible. Make sure your child knows he or she has just done something good.
Expressing your approval is a powerful way to reinforce good behaviour
Remember, your child is watching what you do. Be sure to model the kind of responsible behaviour you want
your child to adopt.
‘Few things help an individual more than to place responsibility upon him
and to let him know that you trust him.’ ~Booker T. Washington
ICE CREAMS FOR SALE - Wednesday lunchtimes
$1.00
Ice creams will be sold after the second bell, outside the Multi-purpose room.
See you there!!!!

In Term 3, Te Wānanga o Aotearoa ran a national creative competition for all New Zealand Primary and
Intermediate Schools during Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori (Māori Language Week). Some of the students at Te
Rapa School did exceptionally well in the Year 3/4 and Year 7/8 categories. The writing topic for Year
3/4 students was “Nga Mea Pai ki Ahau (My Favourite Thing/s) and the Year 7/8 topic was “He
Maharatanga Pai ki Ahau (My Favourite Memory). The students were required to write their story in
Maori or in English and use some Maori words, phrases or sentences in it and include a picture. I am very
proud to announce that in the Year 3/4 category, Amber (Year 4 in Room 11) was placed 1 st , Megan
(Year 4 in Room 11) was placed 3 rd and Anais (Year 4 in Room 11) story (besides Amber’s and Megan’s)
was chosen to be one of the 16 stories published into a book. In the Year 7/8 category, Bailey (Year 8 in
Room 20) was placed 2 nd and Alicia (Year 8 in Room 20) was placed 3 rd. All these successful writers were
presented with a Warehouse Voucher to the value of $100 dollars at our final Term 3 assembly by Davina
Hughes, the Te Wānanga o Aotearoa representative. Te Rapa School was also awarded $2,000 dollars to
buy books and resources for our School Library. A copy of the Year 1/2 and Year 3/4 books with the stories
that were chosen to be published are on display in our School Library for anyone to read. Unfortunately
the Year 7/8 stories did not get published into a book. Our successful writers are pictured with
Davina below. We would like to thank Davina and Te Wānanga o Aotearoa for presenting our successful
writers with their prizes and for their generous donation of $2,000 dollars to Te Rapa School for Library
books and resources.
