Lymington u3aOne activity ofLymington u3a iscalled Questors. Members visit placeswhich are not usually open to membersof the public, and for their first trip afterCovid, our Questors visited the factorythat makes theatrical costumes as well asall the BBC ‘Strictly Come Dancing’outfits.It’s a small company that has grown fromone woman with a dancing schoolmaking costumes for competitions to thepresent much bigger enterprise. Wetoured the premises, seeing the processof designing, cutting and making thecostumes, and met the people involvedin each stage of the process, many ofwhom have been with the company formore than 20 years. When ‘Strictly’ startsin the autumn they all have to work flatout over the period between Septemberand December each year. The costumesfor the professional dance routines aremade over a 2-week period during thesummer.The trip was called 'Behind the seams'!The dresses are all made with a leotardas the base and can be placed in thewashing machine in a bag to be reused.They have a vast array of fabrics in allcolours of the rainbow, many of whichare especially produced and dyedspecifically for them. This included nets,chiffon, polyester and feathers. Theembellishments are applied with washproofglue which makes the garmentsvery heavy.Why not think about joining Lymingtonu3a?
