The 50th Pilipinx Consciousness Night: Sabado

Hello and welcome to the 50th Pilipinx Consciousness Night, "Sabado"!! Cal State East Bay's Pilipinx American Student Association has put on a production of cultural performances and narratives to tell the impact of our Asian-American history and as a celebration of our culture. Synopsis: The story behind the 50th PCN relies on connection. Which person has met which person that led them to which person. When our founder, Randy Sabado, formed our organizayion in 1972, he did so with the help of his friends. In liue of recent events due to the strike in support of ethnic studies in school that was held in San Francisco, to the issue of Martial Law by former president Ferdinand Marcos back home in the Philippines, Randy took the responsibility of creating a space safe for students of all background at CSU: Hayward to feel safe on campus. Creating the connections necessary, Randy had no idea the impact he left on this campus, as 50 years later, PASA (Pilipinx-American Student Association) is still thriving today as the largest non-greek organization on campus. The film follows a young Randy Sabado as he's slowly getting used to classes and understanding what it's like to be a leader. Slowly throughout his first year, he finds friends in unlikely places, and finds love right when he needs it. Our show date is June 2nd @ 9pm. The 50th Pilipinx Consciousness Night

PCN 50:

SABADO

June 2, 2022

NATIONAL ANTHEM OF THE PHILIPPINES

Bayang Magiliw,

Perlas ng silanganan

Alab ng puso

Sa dibdib mo'y buhay

Lupang Hinirang,

Duyan ka ng magiting,

Sa manlulupig

Di ka pasisiil.

Sa dagat at bundok,

Sa simoy at sa langit mong bughaw,

May dilag ang tula

At awit sa paglayang minamahal.

Ang kislap ng watawat mo'y

Tagumpay na nagniningning;

Ang bituin at araw niya

Kailan pa ma'y di

magdidilim.

Lupa ng araw, ng luwalhati't

Pagsinta,

Buhay ay langit sa piling mo;

Aming ligaya na 'pag may

Mang-aapi

Ang mamatay nang dahil sa

'yo.

As many Pilipinx University Organizations began switching

from using the term Pilipina to Pilipinx, the Cultural

Directors of the 44th PCN and PASA's 45th CORE decided to

follow suit as a sign used to show our progress of being

more inclusive and diverse in our communities. Pilipinx is a

new term that was created to represent the

demasculinization and decolonizaion of the word "Pilipino",

supporting our more inclusive and diverse environment to

everyone. It is also a symbol that the college-aged youth

have the power to spread consciousness within our

community, and create positive progress for the pilipinx,

even as students.

How did we try to accomplish all of these tasks and

challenge the narrative of what it is like to be Pilipinx?

During the creation of the first PCN in 1972, it's main

purpose was to give a platform to allow college students to

express Pilipinx identity where the desire to learn about

culture, at that time, reached an all new high. Being

students that have never experienced anything like the

Pilipinx that we pay tribute to today, students only get a

small taste of those experiences. From different dances

coming from tribes like the Ifugao, Maranao, among others;

this is the culture and history we can identify with living in a

country where the Pilipinx are represented only to a small

degree.

4

In past PCN stories, Pilipinx issues have been discussed

from Guerilla movements, Marcos martial law, Pilipinx

racial discrimination, and other issues. PCN has turned

into a platform where we can pay respect, be conscious

toward these issues, tell stories that are not told in

classrooms, and be conscious of our society and world

around us. We don't consider changing the name of PCN

just because e want to do so, but rather to create

something bigger than ourselves, not as individuals or

organizations, but the communities that we are a part of.

And thanks to all of these factors, especially those

mentioned previously, we came to the decision to

change what PCN means to PASA to better align with who

we have become and who we are becoming, as the

Pilipinx American Student Association (PASA) of CSUEB.

Greetings everybody! Thank you all for coming to show your support for PASA’s

50th Pilipinx Consciousness Night, “Sabado”!

A quick introduction to catch you all up on who I am, I joined PASA back in the Fall

semester of 2018 as a Freshman and got picked up into B.A.M. Fam by my Ate Shannen

Cacdac, who was my door into getting more involved with the organization. This is my

fourth year being a part of PASA and currently my third year serving on CORE, now as

your President. It has genuinely been such an amazing experience to witness PASA grow

and evolve through the toughest times in the world and all the way down to the smallest

enjoyments on campus. It’s been an honor serving this community. Thank you all for

allowing me to be your President for PASA’s 50TH year!

There is a strong importance to PCN as this gives us the opportunity to not only

think collectively on the history of our people but to be mindful that there is still work

that we can do to improve our community and for those back in the Philippines.

To Ana, Paolo, and Joanne. You three have shown nothing but resilience and

excellence throughout this year. To garner up a new generation of first time PCN

members, you guys deserve nothing but praise! I have seen you three work tirelessly on

end and late at nights to get this night down perfectly, even when odds are shoved

against you guys, you always put your best effort! Nothing but love for you three!

To COREbigan (my intern class), I hope you all are thriving! To COREisahan for

being my first CORE memories, and I wish we had a proper ending, sending my love to

you all! To CORElakas, nothing but awe for leading PASA through a Pandemic!

To COREbabayan, I am nothing but proud of you all! I have seen each and every

one of you have a shining spotlight throughout our term! You guys have put in so much

work and effort into bringing the community of PASA out of the virtual space and back

into an arms length apart. To see the new face of PASA smile at each event was all thanks

to you all! Thank you for your hard work, truly! It has been an honor working with you all

COREbabayan and I wish you all the best, thank you for this amazing term!

Thank you, B.A.M. Fam for teaching me important lessons and knowing what PASA

has to offer. Shoutout to my sibs of Gen X, you guys have been the blessings of my

college journey and I will alway hold you all dear to my heart! Shout out ‘Confetti Yike

Line’!

To next year's CORE and future generations of PASA, I am wishing you all the best

of luck! I will always be a DM away when needed!

Lastly, Thank you to my family, MAHAL NA MAHAL KITA! You guys are who I

depend on the most, even at times I don’t show it. Thank you to my mom for every single

sacrifice you have done to get me where I am today! Thank you to my family for always

checking up on me, I truly appreciate it. Thank you for your support and every single

detail you guys do for me. I love you. With hard work weeks on end, let’s show our hearts

on this lovely “SABADO” night.

Most important, thank you to Randy Sabado and late Mrs. Gerry Low-Sabado. This

night is to commemorate the 50 years of PASA that started because of you both and

others before us. Thank you for what you both have given us and the community that it

started!

Have a great night, and enjoy the show! This has been your President, Meller Gran

signing off!

There’s always that question - are you doing PCN again this year?

People ask: What is so good about PCN? Why are you asking to be stressed out?

Well, I have an answer to at least one of those questions. PCN has given me more

cultural awareness and helped me get close to some of the most amazing people in

PASA. Not only am I learning about Pilipinx history but I’m becoming part of the

history of PCN.

I’m honored to be Cultural Director of Logistics.

I first want to thank my cuties in my line! The Icy Line. Thanks to my newest adings

and my active members in my family. Spending each day with you because of PCN

and bonding over stress/life over the past few months made me so happy to be an

ate/grand. Y’all really made my last PCN so memorable.

Thank you Darian! (Helping me with this speech and keeping me literally alive with

water etc.) I appreciate you being in my life and you’re always the orange to my white.

Love you uwu

Thank you to my friends from all over (CKI, RHA, OGS) y’all this year was so hard. I’m

president of circle k international and an officer for the resident hall association. This

year was about learning my true abilities and how to be the best I can be. Thank you

to all that supported me this year and being patient with my crazy life.

Thank you to my family back in Vallejo! Love you mom and dad! Sorry I been so busy

with my own life recently, trust me - I promise I’m here to make my mark and

not “galavanting”

To my amazing culturals. We did that. I know we still have so much work for our show

in May (wink wink y’all should go) but I’m happy to have y’all by my side through all of

this. From our synchronous thoughts to our moments when we need each other the

most,

I love Pao and Ana.

Good luck to future culturals, being cultural is not easy but the adventure is very

worth it! And lastly thank you COREBABAYAN

Goodnight and enjoy the show!

Joanne Cabanlit

CULTURAL DIRECTOR OF

ACTING

I want to say, first and foremost, Thank you to Martin Atienza & Brent Balansho for opening up this

opportunity for me. Martin nominated me in 2017 to be the Hxstorian, in which I later found my love

for PASA. Later down the line as years passed, the Cultural Director of Acting piqued my interest and I

looked for support and perspective from Brent. Just getting validation from alumni that I had some

support and was backed by people that see me for my work and passion gave me the proper push to

run again and contribute to our beautiful org.

Thank you to my Co, my co-hxstorian from years before, Ansel Coronel. I remember calling him at the

parking lot of a dimsum restaurant in Sacramento contemplating the idea of whether I should return to

be in this position. I’ve already settled into my life as an alumni, but Co put it into perspective of

whether this would benefit me or not. Considering tonight's events, it’s safe to say our phone call was

great.

Thank you to my best friend, Catherine De Leon, for bringing me with her on this journey through

college. I arguably wouldn’t be in the place that I am without you, and I’m glad that we were both able

to have some of our last runs together in PASA. Similar to Ansel, I shared a phone call with Cat, serving

to be one of the integral moments leading up to my return to fil-am. She provided me with an “If you do

it, I’ll do it” ultimatum and it was difficult to say no, even with the knowledge that she would be there to

help choreograph.

Thank you to my partner, Aerielle Ulip. Thankfully we had each other throughout this term and I don’t

know if I would have committed or stayed this long into my position without you. I’m grateful we stuck

it out for our last runs, and we stayed committed to core.

Thank you to my parents for believing in me to do this. I was pushed by my dad to join this

organization and I always love coming home to tell them stories of the stuff I would do during my old

terms and the same goes during this one. I appreciate you both!

As for my current cos, Joanne and Ana, I truly do not have any idea as to what kind of year this would

have been, had we not been together as a collective. From late nights at the studio, to all the way in

STOCKTON, I'm glad I spent nights with yall to later lead up to this momentous event. I honestly

wouldn’t have it any other way and I’m glad we all get to be together to experience this. Knowing

Joanne for so long, I’m glad we finally had something to share to further solidify our bond because I’ve

always wanted to be friends with you. As for Ana, at this point it feels like I’ve known you my entire life.

It’s been great getting to share all of these experiences with you and getting late night dinners with our

friends and hopefully it doesn’t end after tonight.

Thank you to my actors that trust and believe in my ability to tell a story. I’m so excited for everyone to

see what we have in-store on May 21st!

Lastly, a Big Warm Thank you to Randy and Gerry Sabado. Without the efforts they made 50 years ago,

I wouldn’t have this college experience without PASA, so I’m honored to be able to pay it forward in a

grandiose way.

Extending my last Thanks to our Theater Department, Ann Fajilan and Richard Olmstead for allowing

us to host such a beautiful event here at East Bay!

- pao.

CULTURAL DIRECTOR OF

DANCE

The stage was where I’m most comfortable, most confident, and happiest; so,

inevitably, performing became a passion of mine. But I never thought I’d carry it

through college. Yet, the moment I joined PCN 49, even though it was virtual, I was

hooked. It was more than just dancing and acting. PCN deepens our understanding of

our culture, our identity, and ultimately preserves our history. Indulging in the purpose

and meaning behind the movements/dances is empowering and has made me so

proud to be filipina.

To my predecessors, especially Jasmin, Matt, and Ken, thank you for believing in me

and pushing me to run for Cultural Director of Dance. Most importantly, thank you for

the advice, guidance, and for yelling at me when I doubted myself.

To BAMfam, CORE, my friends inside and outside of PASA, and my family, thank you for

your unwavering support, love and encouragement throughout this season. Thank you

CORE for your presence and energy in rehearsals. Thank you Mom and Dad for allowing

me to stay at school, sometimes until 2 AM, to co-lead this production.

To my dancers and choreographers, I’m speechless at how far each and everyone of

you have come and the art you created in the span of 5 weeks. Proud is an

understatement. Watching you all in your element inspired me everyday we got to work

together. PCN’s magic is rooted in your passion for performing and showcasing the

stories of our culture. Thank you for performing with your hearts, for trusting me, and

for dedicating yourselves – especially when it got hard. Without you guys, there would

be no dance exhibition.

To my incredible co’s, Paolo and Joanne, I love you guys. From our late night meetings

to driving to Stockton to our crackhead moments that no one else would understand, I

deeply appreciate you both and our bond. Everything we’ve been through leading up to

this moment has been worth it. Tonight proved that. Y’all, I had no idea who they were

when we were elected, and now it feels like I’ve known them my whole life. PCN really

brings you closer to your close friends and people you never thought you’d get close

with.

Lastly, to our stage crew and the Theater Department, thank you for helping us make

this happen and for giving us a space to tell our story. Speaking of stories, please come

back mid-May to support our wonderful actors as they tell the story of PCN 50: Sabado.

It’s going to be momentous.

Maraming, maraming salamat. Hindi ko to makakalimutan.

Ana Sambile
