EXPORt EntERPRISE DEVELOPMEnt DEPARtMEnt<br />

The <strong>Export</strong> Enterprise <strong>Development</strong> Department is <strong>man</strong>dated mainly with the task of identifying market outlets for <strong>man</strong>ufactured<br />

products, with a major strategic focus on seeking <strong>and</strong> promoting products that are suitable to enter the export market. This is<br />

done through identifying <strong>and</strong> researching new markets to facilitate targeted export promotion aimed at selected buyers. It also<br />

investigates opportunities in markets that have trade agreements with <strong>Botswana</strong>, so as to maximize benefits.<br />

Services of the <strong>Export</strong> Enterprise <strong>Development</strong> Department<br />

• Participating in regional <strong>and</strong> international trade exhibitions.<br />

• Timely <strong>and</strong> efficient services to overseas buyers in vendor identification, drawing itineraries, fixing appointments <strong>and</strong><br />

other support services.<br />

• Assisting <strong>Botswana</strong> companies in product development <strong>and</strong> adaptation to meet buyers’ requirements.<br />

• Organizing Buyer-Seller meetings with a view to bringing buyers <strong>and</strong> sellers together.<br />

• Organizing seminars/conferences/workshops on trade-related subjects.<br />

• Developing local <strong>man</strong>ufacturers reach export readiness st<strong>and</strong>ards.<br />

• Conducting market surveys on regional <strong>and</strong> international markets in collaboration with the Research Department.<br />

• Dissemination of packaged export promotion, information to local <strong>man</strong>ufacturers.<br />

• Organizing <strong>Botswana</strong>’s premiere business to business exhibition trading as Global Expo <strong>Botswana</strong>.<br />

<strong>Export</strong> <strong>Development</strong> Programme (EDP)<br />

The <strong>Export</strong> <strong>Development</strong> Programme (EDP) aims at diversifying <strong>and</strong> growing the country’s exports by training companies to<br />

be export ready. It also targets sectors identified in the National <strong>Export</strong> Strategy. The approach also aims at ensuring that<br />

companies with potential but falling outside the scope of the sectors that have been identified are not overlooked during<br />

selection. The training endeavors to develop selected companies to gain h<strong>and</strong>s-on practical experience in various aspects<br />

of production to help improve product design, quality <strong>and</strong> productivity. Companies are also educated on the techniques of<br />

developing market-driven products whilst incorporating a robust <strong>Export</strong> Marketing Plan within their Business models. All<br />

selected companies are visited to conduct needs analysis or assessment, which aims at identifying each company’s Training<br />

<strong>and</strong> Technical needs requirements (for example, product improvement, production, quality/st<strong>and</strong>ards control, export marketing<br />

<strong>and</strong> market entry.)<br />

The programme assists <strong>and</strong> encourages companies to achieve a widespread underst<strong>and</strong>ing of export marketing plans,<br />

productivity improvement in the factories, product design including product diversity, patenting, br<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>and</strong> business<br />

<strong>man</strong>agement systems.<br />

Three key objectives of this program are:<br />

i. to keep companies that are new exporters active in foreign markets (consolidation of gains <strong>and</strong> growth on one market)<br />

ii. promote market diversification of companies that have gone beyond the stage of new exports on already penetrated<br />

territories <strong>and</strong><br />

iii. Increase the number of new exporting companies <strong>and</strong> new exportable products.<br />

<strong>Export</strong> Promotion Interventions<br />

Missions <strong>and</strong> trade Fairs<br />

• To promote <strong>Botswana</strong> products in foreign markets<br />

• To expose <strong>Botswana</strong> <strong>man</strong>ufacturers in foreign markets<br />

• To penetrate new markets<br />

• To exp<strong>and</strong> market share share regionally <strong>and</strong> internationally<br />

These are practical activities BEDIA carries out in foreign countries alongside <strong>Botswana</strong> <strong>man</strong>ufacturers. Objectively these<br />

foreign promotion interventions are carried out to:<br />

• Increase the number of <strong>Botswana</strong> companies that export by heightening the export awareness of potential exporters, training<br />

<strong>and</strong> guiding them to make their first export sale(s).<br />

• Increase export sales by <strong>Botswana</strong> companies that have the potential to export or are already exporting by intensifying<br />

their awareness, training <strong>and</strong> guiding them to consolidate their presence in foreign markets <strong>and</strong> assisting them to become<br />

diversified exporters.
