The <strong>Life</strong> Sketch <strong>of</strong> Ma <strong>Kpannah</strong> <strong>Siah</strong> <strong>Joseph</strong> (“Ndebendu)<br />

April 6 th , 1932—May 17 th 2022<br />

Ma <strong>Kpannah</strong> <strong>Siah</strong> <strong>Joseph</strong>, more commonly known as Ndebendu (translated to “big momma”), was<br />

born on April 6, 1932, in Sorlumba, L<strong>of</strong>a County, Liberia. Born to parents, Ma Finda Jengeih and Pa Saah<br />

Bundoo, Ma <strong>Kpannah</strong> was <strong>the</strong> first <strong>of</strong> seven children: Saah Bundoo (bro<strong>the</strong>r, deceased), Tamba Bundoo<br />

(bro<strong>the</strong>r, deceased), Kumba Bundoo (sister, deceased), Fayiah Bundoo (bro<strong>the</strong>r, deceased), Fatu Finda<br />

Tamba (sister) and Fallah Bundoo (bro<strong>the</strong>r, deceased).<br />

Ma <strong>Kpannah</strong> has always been a hard worker. As a child and throughout her teenage years, she<br />

worked as a farmer in Sorlumba. She continued farming and agricultural work throughout her life, even<br />

during her last summer on this side <strong>of</strong> Heaven in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, where she planted and<br />

harvested potatoes greens, chaiyo and paylo. Ma <strong>Kpannah</strong> had an excellent entrepreneurial outlook to life<br />

and maintained several businesses throughout her life. In her young adult years during her time in<br />

Sorlumba, Ma <strong>Kpannah</strong> was a small business owner selling goods and merchandise to provide for and<br />

support her family. She frequently traded between Sorlumba, Guinea and Foya. In 1991, Ma <strong>Kpannah</strong><br />

departed Sorlumba and moved to Monrovia, Liberia to support and care for her children and grandchildren.<br />

During her time in Monrovia, Liberia, Ma <strong>Kpannah</strong> sold canyah, peanuts and kola at home to passerby who<br />

quickly became frequent customers. While in Minnesota, she sold cassava leaves, greens, bitter-balls, palm<br />

oil, torborgee oil and many o<strong>the</strong>r food goods to Liberians all throughout Brooklyn Park and Brooklyn<br />

Center. Not only did Ma <strong>Kpannah</strong> possess excellent business wit, her compassion and care for o<strong>the</strong>rs made<br />

her well known and loved throughout <strong>the</strong> various communities she inhabited and resulted in customers<br />

becoming fast friends and family.<br />

Of <strong>the</strong> several notable characteristics <strong>of</strong> Ma <strong>Kpannah</strong> that remained unchanging was her unwavering<br />

faith in Jesus Christ. Ma <strong>Kpannah</strong> accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior at a young age, during her time<br />

in Sorlumba. She was a member <strong>of</strong> Free Pentecostal Church in Monrovia, Liberia. In Minnesota, Ma<br />

<strong>Kpannah</strong> was a devout member <strong>of</strong> Christ Triumphant Outreach Ministries, where she faithfully attended<br />

church weekly before she became ill. In addition to her church activities and association, Ma <strong>Kpannah</strong> was<br />

a founding member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Minnesota Healing Prayer Temple, a daily Minnesota prayer line that she<br />

participated in with o<strong>the</strong>r members, lovingly known as <strong>the</strong> “Golden Girls”. Ma <strong>Kpannah</strong> was also a member<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Devine Healing National Prayer Line with o<strong>the</strong>r Golden Girls. Ma <strong>Kpannah</strong> was devoted to seeking<br />

God through prayer and dialed in on <strong>the</strong> prayer lines three times a day, daily. She would meet with <strong>the</strong><br />

o<strong>the</strong>r Golden Girls periodically for evening prayer and tarries and could always be counted on to intercede<br />

for those around her. Ma <strong>Kpannah</strong> reverenced <strong>the</strong> Lord and taught those around her to trust in and depend<br />

on <strong>the</strong> Lord.<br />

Ma <strong>Kpannah</strong> was christened Ndebendu at an early age, during her time in Sorlumba because <strong>of</strong> her<br />

natural ability to love and care for those around her. As <strong>the</strong> first <strong>of</strong> seven children, not only was she <strong>the</strong> big<br />

sister, she also took on a mo<strong>the</strong>ring role for her siblings. Ndebendu was blessed with many children,<br />

grandchildren and great grandchildren during her time on earth. Although Ndebendu bir<strong>the</strong>d six children:<br />

<strong>Siah</strong>, Saah, Louise Kumba Tamba, Tamba, and Moses Fayiah Nyumah; countless o<strong>the</strong>rs had <strong>the</strong> honor and<br />

privilege to be mo<strong>the</strong>red by her in Sorlumba, Monrovia and in Minnesota. Ndebendu advocated for every<br />

member <strong>of</strong> her family and cared for all; she never left anyone behind, nor did she forget those she left in<br />

Sorlumba or Monrovia. Ndebendu was selfless and loved her family deeply and fully. Ma <strong>Kpannah</strong> is<br />

survived by her sister, Fatu Finda Tamba, her loving children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, numerous<br />

extended family and caring friends, and <strong>the</strong> Golden Girls. May her soul rest in everlasting peace.

STATEMENT OF ACKNOWLEDGMENT<br />

We sincerely appreciate all <strong>the</strong> overwhelming support, prayer, and<br />

visitation from friends, sympathizers, and well-wishers during this time<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> irreplaceable loss <strong>of</strong> our mo<strong>the</strong>r, grandmo<strong>the</strong>r,<br />

great grandmo<strong>the</strong>r, sister, and aunty.<br />

Kindly continue to keep us in your prayers.<br />
